This was the season finale of Season 14. At the end of the episode, Briscoe is retiring, and on the way out of the office, he says "It's nice to go out on a win". His retirement was linked to Jerry Orbach succumbing to a decade-long battle with prostate cancer - he passed away in December 2004, the same year as the end of Season 14. He was a trooper and the consummate actor right until the end. RIP Jerry Orbach.

That's what made this episode so bittersweet was Lennie's retirement - behind the scenes Jerry Orbach was going to star in the spinoff L&O Trial by Jury which was supposed to be less taxing to film - an important consideration since he had been battling prostate cancer. They didn't disclose his illness until a few weeks before his passing; sadly, he was only able to tape the 1st two episodes of L&O Trial by Jury before his death. At the end of the second episode of that series, you could barely hear his voice. ;( RIP, Jerry!

@@mr.d.572the head DA mentions Alfred Hitchcock, he directed a movie called Strangers on a Train, two strangers meet on a long train trip, talk, share their problems, and decide to commit murder for each other. Even if somehow caught, there would be no motive for either of them. These women screwed up by becoming good friends, so the one continued to go to the other’s cafe, where she was arrested at. They remade Strangers on a Train many years later as a comedy, Throw Mama From the Train.

This could be based on Alfred Hitchcock’s film, “Strangers on a Train”. A nit job thinks she’s made a deal with a famous tennis player to commit murders for each other. The tennis player thought the other man was just thinking out loud and was joking; turns out he was a sociopath. Good movie.

In the original Strangers on a Train movie, only one party followed through with the murder while the other was never taking it seriously in the first place and then had to deal with being hounded by the psychopath trying to pressure him into "completing his end of the bargain". So inspired by, not ripped off.
