At 3:37 it says that interchange (known locally as malfunction junction) could benefit from a major makeover. Well it had one. It was closed all of 2019 and reopened around the time the covid pandemic began.
In Sept. of '15 and Oct. of '16 this proud Jersey boy flew down from EWR to ATL, rented a car and drove to Tuscaloosa to see my beloved Crimson Tide play football...a bucket list item for sure. As a bonus, in '16 also had a once in a lifetime weekend double play with a big win over A&M and a visit to Talladega Speedway.(That was crazy...good thing I didn't wear my Hillary shirt...LOL!!!) Nice ride from the airport along mostly I-20 to I-59 to T-Town...ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!
Thanks, I would guess either that or I-65 through the city is the busiest freeway in the state. The stack at I-65/459 (coming in a future video) is more impressive, a little more spread out. As for the skyline, there is a better view from the flyover ramp leaving US-31/280 to I-20/59 West that you'll see in a future video.
There are some rural three lane (six lane) highways in the east, I-75 in Georgia for example is 6 lanes or more for the entire 355 miles as well as in Florida to where the Turnpike branches off at Wildwood.
During my travels,it depends on the pacticular State for 3 Lanes, espically for truck traffic. i-65 in Kentucky is 6 lanes from Louisville to Elizabethtown and i-75 in Michigan 6 lanes from Detroit to Toledo With so much truck travel on our interstates(Fed-Ex,Ups,Walmarts(past 40 of them in a hour)etc need more lanes to not cause backups on our interstates.
At about 1:43 to 1:47, you're passing the old Century Plaza shopping mall. It was once full of retail, with JCPenney, Sears, Rich's and one other anchor store, everything in that building is closed down now and it's a dead mall.
Before even watching the first second of the video footage itself, I took note of the skyline in your picture. That's literally the best picture I've ever seen of the Birmingham skyline. First time I've ever heard that song; catchy tune I've always liked that I-20/I-459 stack; I've seen it in numerous pictures. Looks like a pretty neat and mostly well-designed 8 lane freeway (the I-20/I-59 duplex). Isn't this also the busiest freeway in the State of Alabama??
Wow 8 years ago. It's all changed now . The I-20/59 Bridges that you crossed next to the civic center is gonna be closed starting next month . It's all coming down . Where I-65 and I- 20 cross all new bridges now . If your back this way I'll show where to get some good bbq . Bob Sykes in Bessemer and Arichbalds in Tuscaloosa .
Actually, believe it or not, but in many states, it *is* the law. In Oklahoma, for example, the state patrol is fairly stringent on drivers keeping right, except to pass, and I personally saw 1 driver get pulled over, 'cause he was by himself in the left lane for a good 5 miles. I know Illinois enforces KRETP as well, but not as stringent as Oklahoma. Oregon and Washington State do so on a sporadic basis. Out here in California, it's not a law, but rather an advistory. ::sigh::
Can anybody tell me wny in the Southeast their is no truck restrictions on speed limits? If you do 70mph,a truck should be doing 60-65mph on interstates and Why no signs for trucks Right 2 Lanes Only in Metro Areas? Its amazing that you are doing 70mph and a semi truck is doing 75-80mph down the interstate
Most drivers do use the right lane and then the left to pass but it only takes one to hold up the freeway but ofcourse it isn't a law to keep right it is just common sense.
Yeah, it's definitely one of the most annoying "traits" of some American drivers...although many are good at utilizing the passing lane for passing only, and moving back over to let faster traffic move by.

I like the interchange with i-65, lots of speed changes 60,50 and 70mph SWof the city back to a 2 lane interstate to i-459,Great Job buy Freeway Jim

I like how the Corolla for the first half wants to play 'follow the leader with you' haha.
Thanks,

Yeah I agree, it's actually *the first* time I've ever heard of this song...just downloaded it on iTunes. :-)

I'll be honest, I only used the song because it fit from a tempo standpoint and it was the right length :)
All green . thanks for the video

I like that stretch in Kentucky you mentioned.
Some places do have left lane restrictions.
In the Atlanta area all through trucks are banned inside I-285.
That's the same way it is in Florida along I-75, only in this case, trucks are banned from the left most lane.

DId you film this on a Sunday or something - the road is almost deserted at the beginning? Thanks for the ride, Jim and as always, 5 Stars...
Thanks, It's a nice city for it's size.
Thanks, we filmed it last Saturday 2/27.
"The Road to Hell" by Chris Rea, it's posted in the closing credits.
The I-20/I-65 interchange is one of the weirdest I've seen (that is not some kind of spaghetti interchange).

I didn't know it was a law in any state lol, thanks for the information.
I'll never get used to the American idea of using any old lane!
...ha, don't say that; I have a Toyota Corolla as well. ::gulp:: 69,000 miles and no issues, thus far, but you just never quite know...
I live near Birmingham. Birmingham, UK anyway!
@CptSchmidt I was watching them as well, LOL.

What song is this?
@Freewayjim Good tune.
If some drivers would adhere to simple lane discipline the rest of us would not use "any old lane"
Yeah I-65 and I-459 carry less traffic.
When's I-22 going to be finished?
Yeah, it's definitely one of the most annoying "traits" of some American drivers...although many are good at utilizing the passing lane for passing only, and moving back over to let faster traffic move by.
