The film is problematic in this day in age. A better film with a similar plot would be The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, that would be great reaction video.
I don’t blame her, I always forgive her, and I truly feel for her… Everything that she does “to” Forrest is as a result of her childhood trauma… she doesn’t know that she deserves love and happiness, she doesn’t believe that she’s worth anything until after everything Forrest goes through and she’s had time to sober up and go through therapy, which didn’t happen for her until Forrest Jr was born…

I think she always loves Forest she probably just never felt worthy of real love and was always trying to run from her past and Forest likely reminds her of the past.
I always felt sympathy for her and I think it was made clear that she felt protective toward Forrest but felt so shitty about herself that she didn't deserve his love (or any true love) and importantly, still addicted to drugs so that she didn't want to burden him.
Also her conditioned response to problems was to escape, a strategy she learned as a helpless child. That's also why her advice to Forrest was always to run away.
During his speech he said, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. Thats all I have to say about that."

Really what else is there to say. You either come home from war missing something you can never get back, or you just never come home at all. Not much to add, being realistic about it.

The “Is he smart?” part always brings me to tears. That moment you realize Forrest was aware of his own condition and didn’t want his son to face the same problems he did 😢
I always loved how the people sitting on the bench represent the phases of life. The young nurse, the mother, the middle-aged business man, and finally the grandmother. Took me a while to catch that.

That moment makes me cry EVERY time, for me it's one of the great all time acting moments.
I was sooooo waiting for it and then.............what!! , skip to the next scene! Nooooooo! I think it's my favourite line of the whole movie and it destroys me every time.

As intelligent as the reactor might be, I don't think he truly grasped some of the key points in this movie . . . like early on, he seemed to completely miss the child sexual abuse impact on Jenny's psyche. The reactor also made the false presumption that Jenny was at all interested in Forrest's money . . . and then there was the whole "is he smart, or is he ... " deletion.
His brother did a lot of the running scenes that don't show Tom's face so tom could stay & shoot shots elsewhere.

I'm so glad to see you empathizing with Jenny instead of judging her. She made some bad decisions, but she was in pain.
@@Gnossiene369 it is a dangerous mindset, but when you're told you're a piece of shit, or meant to feel like a piece of shit, all the time by the people who are supposed to protect you , you act like a piece of shit because it's what's expected of you You're told your worthless, your told you're only good for being abused, whether sexual or other ways, so you believe it. You believe that that is life you are going to lead. Some of us fell for it. It took a very long to for me to come around to become a good person, because my mother raised me to believe that I was awful, a liar, a thief, a slob, a stupid, worthless person. I didn't believe that I was meant to be anything else, until I met my husband, and found that I did deserve to be loved by a wonderful person and that I didn't have to be who my mother told me I was.
I agree with you - people hate Jenny for not having the feelings they want her to have. And her whole life has been an exercise in trauma.
Jenny might have married Billy and lived happily ever after if Forrest didn't disrupt their date and open the car door and start punching him.
@@Gnossiene369 It's ironic that Jenny always gets the attention for her actions, while I believe the script is meant to point to Forrest, to show what 'unconditional love' looks like in someone other than your immediate family. And not just towards Jenny, but also Capt. Dan. In _both_ instances, it paid off as they both grew past their demons with a ton of help from Forrest.
The key question moving beyond your points is, 'how much grace do you extend in the hope that Jenny overcomes her past'? I mean, you do _love_ her truly. It's a lot easier to simply diagnose the situation, but it's a lot harder to determine in your heart what is best for Jenny (or Dan) in the midst of their rebellion, and then carry it out week after week and year after year. Forrest always did the selfless thing, and that's the moral of the story. Jenny and Dan were just instruments to tell that story.

I like that Forrest is so sweet and simple, he really doesn't know how to hate. He can get mad, as we see with Jenny's boyfriend who hit her. But he doesn't hate people that the world around him tells to hate.

This is one of my favorite movies. But I think the best thing about it is what Gary Sinise did in the aftermath. First, he formed the Lt. Dan Band and they play shows for the troops. (He plays bass, FYI.) Second, he started the Gary Sinise Foundation. They help out veterans, mostly those who have lost limbs on the battlefield, even building smart homes for a lot of them to make their lives a little easier. Yes, Gary Sinise is my favorite actor, but he's also an amazing person! And P.S. If you want a film recommendation from the same year, may I suggested Quiz Show. Another one from my Top Ten List.

@@Stephie_L Ransom is a great one. And of course, there's Apollo 13, if you wanna see him and Tom Hanks together again. He also starred in and directed an Of Mice and Men adaptation. Although, if you watch Reindeer Games, get the director's cut. It's far better than the theatrical. Hope that helps! 👍

I've never seen anyone leave out their reaction to forrest asking if his son would be smart of "stupid" - like him. Also, the part where he is crying and leaves the note from his son on his wifes grave. Those were very emotional scenes.
Tom Hanks is an AMAZING actor. He is definitely in my top 5. I love this movie.

Forrest: Moma always said "life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get." Jenny had a messed up life and several of the things she did was because of that. I can't be mad at her but she's not completely blameless either.

Finally! someone who understands Jenny. Trauma cam destroy you. LT Dan suffered but as an adult and it almost broke him. A child who suffers internalizes it more and has less coping skills. She repeated the same pattern over and over since childhood.
The abuse she suffered isn't an excuse for how she lived her life and how she treated Forrest. There are many people who suffer abuse like that and don't make the choices she did. Her only redeeming part is that she eventually got herself out of it and improved her life.
A million-dollar wound is an injury that gets you out of the war arena but doesn't leave you disabled. It's rare and lucky, like winning the lottery.
The feather/bird/flying motif recurs numerous times in this film, relating to Jenny mostly, but also relates to the destiny vs random dichotomy that Forrest brings up in his last soliloquy over Jenny's grave.
Jenny was jettisoned into an aimless, lost life by her father's abuse and the collapse of her family, but the fact she kept crossing paths with Forrest suggests she and he were destined to be together.
Jenny thought she was trying to be free (in her final flirtation with suicide, the music behind her was Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird"), but she was actually trying to escape. By the time she finally figured things out, she was a new mother with a fatal illness (HepC).
Jenny really believed she was no good for anyone, that she was worthless, because that is what her daddy taught her. She gravitated to every man that was horrible to her, because they reminded her of her father and she hoped to get their approval, but never did. Jenny had gone to Forrest for sanctuary, while she started sorting things out (she slept a lot, was quiet, was in her own thoughts a lot). When Forrest proposed, she couldn't stay; she wasn't ready to trust and still didn't believe she had anything to contribute. She left partly just to protect Forrest, because she was aware she was still a mess psychologically.
Jenny's child was a result of their last night together. By the time she found out she was pregnant, he had just started his 3yr run crisscrossing the nation; he had no address to send word to. How could she contact him to let him know she'd had his child? And she didn't want to tell him in a letter, especially when she also needed to tell him she was dying and had no one to take their child.
Just to add, if something is described as a "million dollar" whatever, it generally just means it was a 1 in a million type of whatever happened. Basically incredibly lucky, and usually it's meant in a positive way

The screenwriter has said that she died from late-stage HIV (which actually should be AIDS) and that he was writing a sequel where Forrest Jr had acquired AIDS from his birth.

14:22 they had actual footage of JFK shaking someone else's hand, then digitally replaced that person with Hanks who was staying in front of a blue screen then hired someone else dub over JFK but would replace his lips with the different line of dialogue.
From what I've heard, most of the running scenes was Tom Hanks' brother.
Lt Dan was a good man, he looked after his soldiers in the field and when he met up with Forrest for new years he knew not call him stupid. When the girls made fun of Forrest he stuck up for him because Forrest is his soldier, he can poke fun of Forrest but God help anyone else who does. Lt. Dan also looked after the shrimp business and invested the money making them both very rich, when Forrest was running Lt. Dan paid the staff to take care of his house.
I think this movie is very spiritual, like it's that movie that when you finish it you get into an existential crisis. Every time I see this I wonder if I'm living my life the best I can, because Forrest's way of living is so unique and interesting. Many people dream and work to achieve the things that he didn't even thought he would do

Speaking from my own experience and opinion. Abuse, especially sexual abuse, doesn't ever go away. Growing up you have an underlying issue that you can never understand and never NOT feel. Jenny is a lost soul, her soul was twisted up as a child...She loves Forrest, but she is lost..she doesn't love herself that's why she went with that abuser instead of Forrest. She is searching, but even she doesn't know what for..
Dunno if someone answered but my father exaplained the "Million Dollar Wound". Basically his wound was enough to get him off the front lines but not debilitating or cause too much harm. People used to say those kinds of injuries people would pay a million Dollars to get in order to get out of being in Vietnam. Also Bubba had to serve cause I believe he said hew was Drafted.
I don't recall the drafing part but I do recall the scene after graduation wih the recruiter try to get him to join up.

It stuns me how nearly all reactors don’t pick up on the fact that Jenny has AIDS in the early 80’s at the start of the pandemic when they had no idea what the virus was. It also shocks me every time that SO MANY male reactors have zero idea why Jenny is the way she is, like she should have just moved on and healed herself on her own. They are genuinely perplexed at her character and her flaws. Usually, they don’t have malice towards her, just ignorance, and instead feel she’s being nonsensical or stupid. I hope they learn more about the world and the other people in it before they become fathers themselves one day; especially if they end up having to raise a daughter.
She didn't have aids, she had hepatitis.
She had hepatitis in the book, but the movie didn't always match the book. When I first saw this movie as a teenager I admit not getting Jenny at all. Her story definitely hits me a lot different as an adult.

@nealblue6413 hep C was a new virus at the time, similar to how HIV was new then. It always made sense to everyone that she had HIV. I was pretty disappointed when I found out it was hep C in the book. What a let down.
For me..i felt Jenny was scared of real love and being treated right, also back then it was hard to get help, I feel she felt Forrest was too good for her. I felt bad for her, I also felt bad for Forrest, he deserved a life with the woman he loved.
If I was Jenny I would be a little scared if Forrest too, not because I think he could hurt me but if he would deffend me as violently as he dose it would scare me nevertheless also because it makes him a little unpredictable since he is so introvered most of the time.
Million dollar wound means a serious enough wound to go home without being permanently disabled or killed.

17:20 - the irony here is that Jenny's the one who doesn't know what love is, at least at that point. She's used to being the "smart" one next to Forrest, and she's not even stopping to consider he may know much better than her in this.
Forrest didn't understand the feelings of love but Jenny didn't understand how love is supposed to feel if that makes any sense.
I already shared my thoughts on patreon but this is probably my favourite reaction of yours as far as the classics go. Watching you get so invested in Forrest and his journey reminded me how special this film really is. This is definitely Tom Hank’s best performance and I LOVE him as an actor. I think I’ve loved him in every role….”Big”, “Sleepless in Seattle” and “Splash” come to mind. Funnily enough I didn’t like “Cast Away” so I’m excited to revisit that with you. I was super young when I saw that film and all I remember was how slow it was. I literally felt like I was stranded myself...it was torture! haha.
Anyway, the bus scene when the kids were being mean to Forrest and you said “Yeah no sh*t, loser.” I swear I about choked from laughing when you said that. I was like, “Yikes, they’re just kids Thor!” haha. I replayed that part like 3 times on patreon 😂 You seem like such a kind soul, but every once and a while the claws come out and it always catches me off guard hahaha
Wow thank you! More and more I'm becoming a fan of Tom Hanks, and I think I might actually like Cast Away even more than Forrest (even though this film is great!), and I definitely think it's a movie that a child wouldn't get much out of, as I think most of the themes are nuanced and mature, so you might like it more now

Let's see if you can make a believer out of me :) But to be fair, I definitely preferred Jenny watching this film through your eyes so we shall see. And Tom Hanks...yeah he has done so many great films. I honestly wish you'd do a Tom Hanks marathon like you did for Burton. He's got a really great filmography. I even loved Tom Hanks in Apollo 13 (1995) and I'd consider that a slow film for a kid too.

Weird how you disliked Cast Away as a kid. I personally loved it so much, but much of that enjoyment must've been just because of the concept. Always loved the Robinson Crusoe style things!

About them seeing Elvis on the TV. Back then his movements on stage were thought to be "too sexual". When Elvis appeared on the Ed Sullivan show they only filmed him from the waist up.

It doesn't actually exist irl. It was built for the film and then torn down when they finished. You can visit the land it was on and see the entrance that was depicted in the movie.
Didn't read all the comments, but if they haven't, After finishing this movie Gary formed the Lt Dan Band and has been helping Veterans ever since. I got to meet him while deployed. Great man.

My dad had a picture of Abbie Hoffman (the guy at the protest on the Mall in the flag shirt) up on his office door for the longest time.
In regards to Jenny deciding to go with that man when we all knew it wasn't a good idea . . . we tend to stick with what we know because even if it's negative, we know what to expect (domestic violence, addiction, . . .), but to pick something that might be good for us . . . well, that's new and scary and unknown and we don't know what to expect.
I've always loved Gary Sinise but I love love love his acting in this movie. Also, after doing this role, he became an advocate and supporter of Wounded Warrior and similar organizations.
Tom Hanks came up with his speech pattern after listening to the young man who plays the Young Forrest Gump who spoke that way naturally.
I don't know if you realized that Forrest's mom is played by Sally Fields.

Thank you for being understanding of Jenny. I think she’s a very complicated character but complicated is realistic, too. I’ve never experienced abuse from a father figure growing up so I can’t even begin to understand that specific trauma, but I did have trauma that started at the age Jenny was when we meet her in the film.
Throughout my life I found myself returning over and over again to situations that were similar to the one that had caused my trauma, just to find something that was familiar. Jenny does that too, and she does it for a long time until she has a child.
Luckily in the 2000s we have better mental health care; albiet not amazing, but I imagine Jenny was never able to get professional help before she became a fully fledged adult and had a child.
As far as Bubba goes, he was drafted into the army and that’s why he couldn’t buy his boat. He mentions on the bus that he was about to but got drafted before he could which adds another layer of sadness. He didn’t intend to show up for the army.
My own pet theory on Forrest running for 3 years - dealing with the emotions he has. I mean, he had been through alot by that point, especially with his mama dying and then Jenny leaving him after that one night. The only thing he knew how to do, to get it out of his system, was run. He says it was for no "particular reason." I think it was maybe for a bunch of different reasons.
I know sometimes that we all do this, we throw ourselves into our work, or exercise, anything to keep our minds off what is bothering us until we can assimilate it.
He was running from the pain like he ran from the bullies.
A million dollar wound is like “wining the lottery”: you get hurt enough to get out of combat but not enough to have long term consequences.
Also the kid that played young forest Michael Conner Humphreys grew up and joined the military he ended up with the nickname Gump

Oh, Hanks was famous already, but known more as a comedic actor. He did some dramatic stuff but nothing that really gave him the "serious actor" cred until the run that started with Philadelphia and included this.
Love this film. It’s one of my desert island choices. You’re a good man, Thor. The way you empathized with each character, especially Jenny, was a breath of fresh air. One of the best Forrest Gump reactions I’ve seen.

This was an amazing movie. I always loved it. I have to admit I had to pause just watching your reaction to it when his ma passed. It always hit but since she actually passed on me just a few months ago I'm having trouble. But anyways, Gump is someone we all need in our lives. A beautiful soul and a wonderful person. Really awesome movie, love how they have these historic moments and include Forest. I felt bad That Bubba, Mrs. Gump and Jenny all died really sad scenes. But yeah The scene in Vietnam I read was actually filmed in South Carolina.
michael Connor Humphreys (young forest) had such a pronounced accent that rather than getting him to speak differently Tom Hanks studied the boy’s verbal idiosyncrasies and he emulated them to play adult forest

Can I just say, that kid actor who played Forrest, did SUCH a good job!
The producer and Director heavily implied that her illness was aids. Which was probably a side effect of her lifestyle that she was living. What’s tragic is, psychologically, the physical and sexual abuse that she experienced as a child Lead her into destructive behavior. The reason why she keeps pushing Forrest away, is because she doesn’t feel like she deserves that type of affection. She doesn’t feel like she deserves to be loved. That forest is good, and doesn’t deserve someone that’s broken like her. This spirals into how she lives, which tragically, ends up killing her at the end, when she contracts aids, most likely through needle usage.
The story is excellent. I like the way that Forrest is a constant throughout the film and It is the people around him that change. It is also a clever idea that Forrest has this mental limitation but is turns out that it makes him mentally and morally the strongest character.

Hey Ded2thaworld! Forrest Gump never gets old for me either! Whenever I watch this movie, I just find that it is SO engaging and well-acted that it feels like it is a quick watch even though the movie is almost 2 1/2 hours long! And despite it being a fictional story, I still find it to be very inspirational, and it has moments that I think most people can relate to on an emotional level. Personally, I often connect with this movie because my brother actually has Autism (I know Forrest Gump did not have Autism, but him and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled).
I also just wanted to mention that Last Year, I actually posted a video on my TH-cam channel that was almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to try and create something unique.

After this role , Gary Sinise created a foundation to help wounded veterans.
And not just for publicity and then forget it. He has done A LOT and has helped a lot of people.

They filmed the Vietnam scenes in South Carolina. A million dollar wound referred to a wound that didn't do too much damage but was bad enough to get you out of the front lines. Most of the running scenes that are shot from a distance are Tom Hanks brother.

My Grandma went to high school with Elvis in Memphis TN. He wasn't famous then and she said he was a shy loner. Apparently, he did a pretty epic talent show performance one time. She became a pin-up model after high school, which was pretty controversial back then. Then she met Grandpa ,who was an army mechanic, during the Korean War.

I like that Tom Hanks met the boy who played young Forrest (who was a kid from Mississippi and had a natural Southern accent) and studied him. Tom made his speech, his body language, and his mannerisms be exactly like this kid’s was since the kid was the real deal. 😎
According to Top Hanks what Forrest actually said during the speech you couldn't hear was: "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."
Jenny was always the one telling Forrest to just run…..that’s what she did herself her whole life ….she couldn’t face situations so she just kept running
I am so glad that you got Jenny, when she tells him you don't know what love is, she's the one who doesn't because of the abuse from her father and that's why she chose men like him and you are the only one that I heard say of course she didn't get his letters because she wasn't sitting home in that trailer waiting for them, she was out living her life

I always saw Jenny as a bit of an example of "go mad from revelation". Not that she was crazy, but she was aware of the events around her much more than Forrest could be. Forrest kept going where normal people broke down, and in many ways because he kept going, they were able to get up again.
When we're saying that Forrest succeded in something, we're saying that this is the level of superhuman tenacity and unflinchability that was needed to succeed. And Jenny didn't have that. This film is a story about what the times did to ordinary people, and Forrest is our guide in it all, who almost magically gives some of them a happy or a happier ending.
During his speech he said something along the lines of, “in Vietnam, sometimes you come back with no legs. And sometimes you don’t come back at all.” It’s something like that, you can google it for the exact quote

I watch this movie in the theater. I wasn't expecting the movie to be so good. I went in the theater blind not knowing what the movie was about.

Hey Nick, I just got a chance to watch and really liked your reactions. Firstly, I happen to be from Savannah GA. and remember when they were making this around various areas here and a few just over in SC. I had wanted to be an Extra but wasn't able to at the time. I've been a long time Tom Hanks and Sally Field fan. I would've so loved to have met them both! Anyways, the Vietnam scenes were done 45 mins from here in SC. And Gump house was also over in SC, I think 55% was filmed here though. The bench where FG is telling his tales is downtown at one of the squares. Though the prop dept. made the bench area just for the movie, once they were done it was taken out. Off and on for a few years ppl wanted a FG bench with I think a bronze FG sitting on it but...sigh, it never happened.😟 On another note, the Bubba Gump eatery came from the movie. I can't remember if we have one around here, lol. Coastal Georgia and SC are big into their shrinking and fishin lol. (I don't eat Seaford, and locals are shocked when I've ever mentioned it lol. It's pratically blasphemy around here lol.) Onward, TH is just of course wonderful in his role and like many of them totally infuses into them. They did have CGI back then so the tons of ppl ( most of them) you see at the Washington Mall are done with it. The intro of the movie with the feather showing the downtown of Savannah, the gold dome and etc. was done so nicely.😊

That’s so cool how a large part of this classic was filmed close to where you’re from! They really did some great work location scouting, although I really wish they had made a Forrest Gump bench for people to visit today. The use of CG was also blended together really well, very impressed! But yeah, this movie was just awesome, glad you had fun watching the reaction!
Tom Hank movies are the best! A couple months ago I went through a phase where I just kept looking for any movie Tom hanks was in and watching that and honestly, all the ones I watched were very enjoyable!
Hey Misty Mane! Tom Hanks is certainly one of the best actors of all time. Very talented! I think in the Mid-Late 1990s was really Hank's peak, with films like Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away, Green Mile (and even his vocal performance in Toy Story). As far as Forrest Gump goes, I just find this movie to be very inspirational overall, and I quote it more than most movies I have ever seen! I love this movie so much. It’s such a great story because of his unchanging character throughout the film. Everyone who meets him changes because of him.
My single FAVORITE moment in all of film history (as far as how the actor played a character) is when Forrest finds out the child is his. He steps back; collects for a second, and his FIRST thought/question is "Is he smart or is he-..." That moment breaks me. Tom hanks sells it SO well. Forrest steps back and realizes if his son is SEEN as "stupid" or "different" he will likely have a poor time growing up and Adulthood like Forrest did. So the fact that that is his first thought/question really makes you feel for Forrest. I say adulthood as well because just like you pointed out, they talk about Forrest on the news labeling him "A Gardener from Alabama" but he is so much more.

The scenes in the swamps were shot in Beaufort County, South Carolina and the scenes where Forrest is sitting and talking to people while waiting for his bus is in Savannah, Georgia which is under an hour south of Beaufort County.
I used to HATE Jenny, but now I understand her better-she was just doing the only thing her father ever taught her how to do, which is run away. She told Forrest to do the same thing multiple times, but Forrest doesn’t run towards or away from anything-he just wholeheartedly DOES.

This is a must see movie for every decade of life.

I think one of the many lessons we can get from this is: You don’t have to be smart, popular, good looking or really exceptional in any way, you just have to be kind, willing to learn, trust and put the past behind you and miraculous things can happen.

First time watching here. I normally would scroll past this content but for some reason I gave it a chance!! You're prospective of this movie us just as beautiful as the movie itself. It's soo cool watching your first reaction it was like watching your friends reaction watching all your favorite parts ❤️ I love sharing things I love with others and sharing movies and shows are so fun sharing emotions and moments ❤️

Children who are severely abused take it to heart and feel bad about themselves, they are very broken and it's hard for them to think they deserve better when they feel that they are damaged goods. Jenny loved Forest but not herself, she thought he deserved better than her and so she ran away many times thinking she didn't deserve him and that she was doing him a favour.
Tom Hanks is always wonderful to watch, I think another roll that shows how excellent an actor he can be is 'big' (1988). I also especially enjoyed his movies Splash (1983), Dragnet (1987), The Burbs (1989), Joe Versus the Volcano (1990), Philadelphia (1993), Apollo 13 (1995), That Thing You Do (1996), Road to Perdition (2002), Catch Me If You Can (2002), The Terminal (2004), Saving Mr. Banks (2013), a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019).
Tom hanks's brother was his running double for the movie. At the time they looked so much alike they were nearly twins so he was the perfect double
One thing people don't get to appreciate if they are seeing Forrest Gump for the first time nowadays is the wow factor of so skillfully inserting Tom Hanks into all the old historical footage. Today, this happens all the time and no one really blinks but it was brand new technology at the time and everyone was completely amazed by it.
