    Biff's messed up sayings were the brainchild of his actor, Tom Wilson, who based Biff's personality on the bullies he had to deal with growing up. The actual saying is "Make like a tree and LEAVE", punning on the fact that trees have leaves. The idea is that Biff is too stupid to get the point of the saying, and clumsily messes it up by saying it as "Make like a tree and get out of here", which lacks the point of the original.

      @DamonNomad82 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@jb888888888 I see how one could come to that conclusion, but in Part 2, Old Biff actually rabbit punches his younger self for saying it wrong and tells him he "sounds like a damn fool" for saying it that way. While it's possible that Old Biff may just not think it's funny anymore, it implies to me that it was due to Young Biff not getting the point of the original saying, finding out later in life what the point was, and feeling really stupid about it afterwards!

    This movie is taught in screenwriting classes as the perfect script. Every line is there for a reason, every plot point has a set up and a payoff. Themes are introduced (like all the clocks at the beginning with how important time is) and repeated for a paid off as well. Just perfection.
    Deloreans were cool in the 80's but as time went on they were shown to be notoriously unreliable.
    The "too darn loud" guy at the audition was the singer Huey Lewis.
    The Twin Pine Mall at the beginning became the Lone Pine Mall when Marty returned to 1985.
    Oh and they put real alcohol in the flask when Marty takes it from Lorraine to prank Michael j Fox. in the car scene.

      DeLoreans are widely considered to be unique and stylish, but a product that under-performed relative to its cost.
      The DeLorean came out in early 1981... and DMC (The DeLorean Motor Company) declared bankruptcy in late 1982... so the DeLorean automobile was not a success. It would likely be forgotten by the general public if it were not for its use in Back to the Future.
      I didn't know all these details off the top of my head, but I looked them up and they confirmed my beliefs about DMC and the DeLorean.

    • @PorterJustPorter
      @PorterJustPorter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@UTU49 The 3rd film came out 6mo after the 2nd -- the two sequels were filmed concurrently and the general reception at the time was that the final installment was a bit underwhelming.
      Westerns weren't especially popular in 1990 and the summer before was infamously dubbed the "Summer of Sequels"... so Hollywood was in a bit in a transition period (new decade, new possibilities, Pulp Fiction etc.). And we just saw Back to The Future 2!
      Interestingly, over the years BTTF3 has aged better than the zany second movie... it has more heart and is closer to the spirit of the original. As a trilogy it's pretty seamless (especially seen from today) and the franchise's only true deficiency is the absence of George McFly from the sequels.

    The attention for the details in this movie is phenomenal. Example : The parking lot where Doc & Marty meet up is called the Twin Pine Mall. Then Marty gets to 1955 and, as he is leaving the barn, he smashing into some little tree and you can hear the owner yelling "My Pine !" then when Marty gets back to 1985, the parking lot is now called "Lone Pine Mall". Genius !
    Also, not exactly a detail but, The song Marty plays is Johnny B. Good,e by Chuck Berry and it's funny 'cause you can see the guy with his broken hand calling a friend of his and talking to him about a certain "Chuck" who's looking fro a new sound. Chuck Berry got the inspiration for Johnny B. Goode from Marty Mc Fly (aka Calvin Klein)

    As someone who grew up in the '50's and watching the movie when it first came out, they really REALLY nailed all the nuances of the differences between 1955 and '85. History buffs (like me) could watch and rewatch this for all the things they got right.
    In 1955, an average tv cost $250 which would be 11 times that in today's dollars (roughly $2,750). A tv was the same price approx. of a new car back then. Yes, certainly if you rich, you could have a second tv but at the time, it was just unthinkable. (When I've made this comment before, others have questioned this, but hearing the conversation made me think back and it was just unconceivable. Also not a lot of programming so why would you want a second one.)
    Yes, I would love to visit the past but no, wouldn't want to live there. So many things about society back then that would I would find suffocating.

It would be like having two copies of the same book. No one in the 50's would've thought of having a TV in each room. Everyone knew that you kept your TV in the living room where the whole family could watch it. No one had a TV in their bedroom.

(Luckily, the Nicholas Brothers performing duos was okay to preserve their talent on film.) Shirley Temple dancing on the stairs with Bill Bo Jangles in The Little Rebel seeming so innocent today, but breaking the taboo of a black man dancing with a white women (and the scene had to be cut from the movie for theaters in the South).

    I don't know why I'm seeing a whole bunch of movie reactions to this trilogy in my recommended lately, but I'm very much here for it.
    One thing to keep in mind moving forward is that these movies do not operate strictly on the butterfly effect (where the tiniest of changes have a massive impact) but rather the ripple effect (where significant timeline disturbances change the future). Also, the changes they make to the timeline are not predetermined, but they do occur in the order we see them on screen (which is why we see events from earlier in the movie/series play out later, but not the other way around). Goldie Wilson was always going to be mayor, and having the idea earlier did not change when he was actually voted into office. As Doc will come to say: "The future isn't written. It can be changed."

    Since you asked, a 20" color TV in 1985 was about $500, that's about $1,376 in today's money. In 1955 about $250 or $2,762.

    • @NZBigfoot
      @NZBigfoot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Given you could buy a house in the 50's for around 7k... yes, TVs were bloody expensive and the idea even in the early 80's of owning two TV's was rare for most people (my own family had the one color TV and an old black and white we still used in the early 80's and sometimes visitors would go 'you have 2 TVs!?', granted this was in NZ).
      Hell I remember when the first LCD TVs came out, they were in the 2-3k$ range while the good old CRT TV's were 200-400 or so lol. The price values of an old 21inch TV (the standard) vs a 30inch or larger back in the late 90's was almost 3-4 times in difference also, was always envious of one of my friends with his 32inch TV lol... but with all tech, the more its adopted the cheaper it quickly becomes.
      Unfortunately house prices do the opposite...

    • @gabytheonedd2695
      @gabytheonedd2695 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was born in 1971 and as a young kid we had a black and white tv - a 13 inch if I recall correctly. It was the early 80s before we could afford a color tv and one slightly bigger. So yeah having even one tv in 1955 would probably have been a big treat. I remember when I was growing up and VCRs first came out they were so expensive that "normal" folks couldn't afford to buy them so video stores came about where you actually could rent a VCR for a night or two and rent a movie to watch. They gave you a bag with the VCR in it and the cables you needed to hook it up. And when you returned it you got charged a fee if you didn't rewind the tape before bringing it back. When the prices finally came down and we bought one it was very cool.
      So in the 50s, 60s, and 70s if there was a tv show you wanted to see you had to be home at that day and time to watch it as George stated in the movie that if he went to the dance he would miss his favorite show - there was no way to watch it at a later time. If you missed it you were SOL. Growing up in the 70s and 80s the tv season for new episodes was strictly September through April/May. Over the summer they would re-air episodes from the prior season sometimes but there wasn't new content much during the summer months. Didn't matter anyway, at least to us kids, because as kids of that time we spent all day out of the house exploring/playing during the summer.
      So glad you watched Back To The Future and found it enjoyable and refreshing. I saw it in the theater when it first came out and many many times since and haven't ever gotten bored of seeing it. Doc Brown is one of my favorite movie characters.
      Oh and, yes, the DeLorean was real. My neighbor (who was a psychiatrist but dressed more like a lumberjack) had one and it looked hysterically funny sitting in the driveway on his farm next to his red Toyota pickup truck in front of his classic red with white trim painted barn and his chickens running around everywhere. Interestingly enough, he destroyed the car by running it into a tree when he lost control while speeding. I don't know what kind of tree it was but there's a fair chance it was a pine tree because we live in Maine and we have lots of those here. If he had managed not to destroy it then it would have been worth a fair penny later on.
      There is an episode of the show Expedition Unknown (Discover Channel) with Josh Gates where the host, Josh, and Christopher Lloyd team up in search of a Delorean and it's a fun little episode and it gives a little bit on what happened to the DeLorean car company. Worth a watch it you can find it online. I can't recall but there might be spoilers for the next two movies so might want to wait to watch until you are done with those.

They still show reruns of that show (and you can probably find episodes on TH-cam). The Flintstones was inspired by the Honeymooners (the 4 lead characters of both shows were very similar; the main difference being the time period the shows were set in).
    I think the expression Biff flubbed should have been "Make like a tree and leave".
    I work for a satellite TV company, and I was processing some paperwork dealing with repairs one of our technicians did at a customer's house, but it had a typo; it said the equipment was originally installed in 1907! Way before satellite TV, way before satellites, and way before TV!! So I emailed corporate and asked them if the technician drove a Delorean to that job!

    In the beginning of the movie, it was Twin Pine Mall, and at the end its Lone Pine Mall because marty ran over one of the pine trees from Mr. Peabody's land when he was driving away.

    17:37 Saying "He disappears like Batman." followed by him on a bike with the bell is funny, and makes me picture Batman on a bike like that.

    Might have already been mentioned, but at 14:55, the one on the left is the clutch for a manual transmission, when hard braking like that you would do the clutch pedal also so the tranny goes into neutral. Good driving skills from A "17" year old..
