Man, your idea works wonders. I've got a 2003 Focus and just like everybody else, my trunk release wouldn't work and I had to take it down and clean it and it's working like a top.
To begin with, the trunk had been closed and it was difficult to open it once open, I dismantled the lock and I did not find anything abnormal. When I checked the fuses, the one in the trunk was blown but when I watched this video it gave me certainty. I opened the cover where the cables are and yes. They were short, thanks for the contribution it helped me
Great video. My latch hadn't worked for years!! I figured it might be the contact. I was just waiting for someone to make a TH-cam video explaining how to fix it. Didn't even have to touch up with a soldering iron. You're the man!

So, I started recording myself fixing everything and put it on TH-cam. The car had a lot of unseen problems that arose, but some good came from it.

I looked at the guy and with a serious face he said, "I never noticed it didn't work, I always used the key." Then after driving it a week I discovered many other problems he didn't tell me about.

I am happy I saw this video mine has not worked in so many years now that im just used to using the key or remote i changed the switch and it still did not fix the problem you would think the new switch would have clean contacts or maybe my problem cause is not the switch
I hear electrical clicking coming from behind glove box and grey metal box next to plugs very rarely it will make the actual unlock latch noise but still nothing my multi meter is telling me everything is running correct numbers
2002 Mercury cougar. Trunk release button works but key does not open trunk. The key fits in and turns but nothing happens. I believe the trunk key switch electrically opens the trunk so not sure if it's a wire.
My trunk opens with the key. However when I use the trunk release button on the dash, I hear it click 3 times and the trunk won't release. Also when I'm driving and go over a bump or something, my door open light turns on followed my a loud noise letting me know that I'm driving with the door open. The trunk/doors are all physically closed though. So I'm wondering if it's a trunk button issue, trunk latch assembly or something else. I do not see any damaged/exposed wires. So I don't feel it can be that. Any tips on what it could be? Should I go the cheapest route first and clean this trunk release button on the dash?
Sounds like a bad latch but it wouldn't hurt to clean the button. It was fast and easy to clean the button. Even though mine would unlatch, I would have to pull on the cord inside of the trunk after opening the trunk to get it fully unlatched before closing the trunk because the latch would re-latch itself.

Tried this but didn't fix it. Looked like the cause as the key remote opens the trunk ok. checked by shorting out the switch wires too. When should the button work? door open/closed. ignition key position, engine running or not?
My trunk won’t open in my 03. But I don’t thinkn it’s electrical. I think the mechanism is faulty. I can’t get into trunk thru backseats either. Any suggestions?
So before i watched your video everytime i clicked on the button nothing happened the remote didnt either although when i hit the remote to open the trunk a click noise came from the glove box , i removed the button and cleaned it and put it back together and now it makes the click noise aswell but does not open the trunk, it cant be a fuse either since the door locks work and everything what do you think it could be?
In my video I show where I also found broke wires at the bend point of the wire bundle between the trunk lid and car. Let me know if that is your problem also.
I haven't had that problem yet, so I don't know how to fix it, but I'm sure it will fail on me at some point. As soon as it breaks and I fix it, I'll let you know.
Hello and thank you for the video. I think the trunk lid in my mark 1 2004 ford focus is opening itself. I have noticed this when the car is stationary and locked. Can the trunk still open itself even when the car is locked? I believe the wiring harness going into the trunk lid can cause the trunk to open intermittently as a result of the wire insulation eventually breaking because of opening and closing the trunk lid?

Justin you are a legend I checked the wiring harness going through the trunk lid and I discovered part of the insulation was broken away on one of the wires. so I put some electrical tape on the damaged wire.
What do you think it could be if the light is always on?i tried pushing the button on the dash, it wont unlock, i tried the key fob trunk release and have tried the key in the trunk door and it wont unlock?
Probably broken wires where the wiring bends at the trunk. I show where the wiring breaks in the video and you'll see it wrapped in blue tape. Let me know if that fixes your problem.

I bet the wire bundle is has cracked, broken, and shorted wires right where the bundle goes into the trunk lid. I believe I who where that is in this video.

well I have completed everything you did to your car as the same as I did to mine and n nothing works still I tried pulling on the key lock cable with vise grips did nothing but break it away from the latch mechanism itself now the button still makes this iratating half clicking sound there is not a short that I can see I've even taking out my whole head liner everything seems good on the wiring though behind my glove box right above fuel safety shut off switch there is a grey metallic box the clicking is coming from when I depress the hatch button still nothing I've thumped the mechanism latch release with a rubber mallet still nothing over even tried putting the latch it self with A PRY BAR!! +Cody Killian wow. At this point you're latch/latch solenoid could be the problem. Did you make sure 12v was getting to the latch when the button is pushed. If it's not, it could be a bad relay to the latch. Do you hear a click at the latch? If so, then it's probably the latch.
Justin Peters ok i have the same issue as Mr. Cody. i cleaned my button and checked wires, and replaced my whole electronic trunk latch. Still nothing other than the relay behind my glove box???? Help please, getting very frustrated!!
Did you try cleaning the contract on the new one? It's possible the new one has been sitting on a shelf for a decade and has a dirty contact. It could also be the relay to the trunk latch, fuse, wiring, or just a bad trunk latch. You could unplug the latch and put a meter to the plug and see if you get voltage when the button is pressed.
The power locks and trunk latch motor probably share the same fuse. Your problem is probably from cracked wire insulation in the trunk lid wiring bundle. I show in the video where I found cracked wiring insulation on my trunk lid wiring bundle. I would suggest cutting open the plastic boot where you see I have the blue tape in the video and see if there’s any cracked wiring insulation. GOOD LUCK!
Justin Peters yeah i knew that. once i pulled the fuse box off to replace the lock fuse, i put one of those fuses that lights up when it's blown. i left the box on the ground and pushed power locks and the trunk button. the trunk button blew the fuse instantly.. i disconnected the plug from the actuator, and it still blew the fuse. i put a bigger fuse in. hit the button. it not only didn't blow the bigger fuse but, the trunk didn't respond at all. i then found forums and your video pointing out the exact spot of broken wiring. so that will be where i start tomorrow when i tear into it. thank you for this video.
Justin Peters i went to that exact spot you showed in the video. i cut the rubber open and the wires were all broke. i even had to use my box cutter to seperate some wires that melted together. i patched them up with electrical tape and then repaired the rubber covering with lots of electrical tape. pressed the button and it works! thank you for this video. it helped me isolate and fix the problem.

so u only clean with alcohol and a q tip and put it back together and it worked ?

+Julio Uribarri will it still release? Sounds like the latch assembly solenoid is bad or there's a high resistance shorted wire. That's my guess.

+Paul Hetherton it doesn't matter if you're doors are locked. Sounds like you have a wire shorting and causing it to pop. Let me know if you find it.

Probably broken wires where the wiring bends at the trunk. I show where the wiring breaks in the video and you'll see it wrapped in blue tape. Let me know if that fixes your problem.

Is there an access from the back seat? If you can get in, there's a cable you can pull to release the trunk latch since your key isn't working

yes sir. Switched it out and tested both ways in and out before and after switch. guess ill track wires all the way from relay to trunk.

mine not only doesn't work but also blows the power lock fuse..

The power locks and trunk latch motor probably share the
same fuse. Your problem is probably from cracked wire insulation in the trunk
lid wiring bundle. I show in the video where I found cracked wiring insulation
on my trunk lid wiring bundle. I would suggest cutting open the plastic boot
where you see I have the blue tape in the video and see if there’s any cracked
wiring insulation. GOOD LUCK!
Justin Peters yeah i knew that. once i pulled the fuse box off to replace the lock fuse, i put one of those fuses that lights up when it's blown. i left the box on the ground and pushed power locks and the trunk button. the trunk button blew the fuse instantly.. i disconnected the plug from the actuator, and it still blew the fuse. i put a bigger fuse in. hit the button. it not only didn't blow the bigger fuse but, the trunk didn't respond at all. i then found forums and your video pointing out the exact spot of broken wiring. so that will be where i start tomorrow when i tear into it. thank you for this video.

Justin Peters i went to that exact spot you showed in the video. i cut the rubber open and the wires were all broke. i even had to use my box cutter to seperate some wires that melted together. i patched them up with electrical tape and then repaired the rubber covering with lots of electrical tape. pressed the button and it works! thank you for this video. it helped me isolate and fix the problem.
