Sadly its only the EP801 that gets the update (not the older EP8 / E8000). Not sure if there's technical limitations to the EP8 (the new EP801 has some hardware changes that allow 100 extra watts, and Autoshift with their new Di2 electronic shifting). Still its a solid update and good to see Shimano progress their current EP801 motor.
That's a disappointment, new to the ebikes. Just got a new Orbea Rise H10 6 months ago and it's a bit frustrating to see an update like this not available for my 6 month old bike but that's the way it goes I guess. I won't be running out to upgrade anytime soon unless the Pinion bikes come to Canada soon.
My first e-bike was a Commencal Meta Power SX Race. I did about 3,000km on it and then sold it for 2 main reasons. 1) I decided I don’t like ultra long/low/slack bikes. They handle like a bus. 2) The Shimano EP8 was a frustrating motor. It cuts out so easily if you pedal too fast e.g. imagine you are going down a hill and you know that the trail is about to start going up so you shift down a few gears in preparation for the climb. You pedal hard and fast, maybe 120+ rpm to try to maintain you speed but the motor just cuts out because it’s above the cutoff rpm for the motor so you quickly slow down and then when your cadence is below the cutoff rpm, the motor cuts back in but far too slowly so you have lost all of your momentum. It was a huge pain in the butt and when I demoed a Bosch Gen 4 I was blown away at how powerful and unrestrictive it felt. I sold the Commencal and bought a Mondraker Crafty R with Bosch Gen 4 and 2 years later I still absolutely love it. Fantastic all mountain/enduro bike that still handles like a trail bike when you’re on the twisties. Love it. It would take A LOT of convincing to get me to buy another Shimano motor. Also an aside, the Shimano motor stopped working one day. No obvious reason and the shop couldn’t work out why it stopped working so they replaced it. It was fine the day before and then just wouldn’t turn on the next day so reliability is questionable.
@@gazbuck73 I believe it can but you have to replace everything including the cables, connectors and battery. So I've been lead to believe. Quite expensive probably. I have the same heckler btw.
Nothing for the EP8? That's just great Shimano...really NOT GREAT. Only sold hundreds of thousands of these motors and I have 3. This is why this spring I bought a Trek Rail with the Bosch motor. Do the fix for the EP8.
Rob, the expectations are very low if you think that they could have released this as a new engine, just because of this update. These bikes are big investments, how can we normalize them coming up with a new engine every year or two, just because of some updates? What they did to the EP8, and how fast they abandoned it, should not be accepted as the norm.

Unfortunately we that have the Old "new" EP800 (8 months in my new bike) don't have access to s simple function as "assist carry over function", that would improve a lot the way to handle the EP800 in hard conditions terrain, but I'm the guilty one by trusting in Shimano and by a bicycle with EP800.
👍YES, interesting info, thanks Rob😊👏👏👏 Now Shimano is back in Race, when they have the Over Run/Extended Assist and of course more peek power. Slowly reducing the power after you stop pedaling is very nice. The only thing The havevto take care of is the display and put it in the frame like every other bike brands😂. Is this latest EP801 engine anything you can by and put in your for example Orber Rise RS🤔, it would be nice to get my hand on one motor like this😂
Me personally I wouldn’t touch a bike with a shamino motor in it, I know riders with numerous motors replaced over 1/2 year period. The plus side is their customer service is good at replacing
Shimano dont even has ep801 motor in stock nor di2 to Supply on their bikes. I own a ep800 and now i see the new bikes with shimano ep801 carrying sram t type transmision instead of their own di2
Unfortunately it still doesn’t show power as bosch motors do. I’m pretty sure the motors have the sensors, therefore it’s just a matter of software. Big missed opportunity in my opinion.
I made this update to 4.3 in the EP6 of my e-bike OGGI Potenza Sport. I had hope the limit was update to 45km/h (27.9 MPH). But no success. Some new OGGI Forza model are coming with a EP6 with this new velocity to 45. I do not know why my Potenza do not has this update.
Cool now give me a longer warranty. My ep801 motor broke at 1000 miles and tbh it scares me once my motor is out of warranty next year. Imo these motors should have a guarantee of say 5000 miles. Basically 3/5 years of coverage. My shimano v2 battery has a guarantee of 1000 hours before it starts to lose power. Meaning that my battery should last 10k miles why can’t this be the same for the motor.
I had my local shop instal this new update on my Canyon Spectral CF8 with the 801 motor. Today and I went for a ride and my motor skips every 3/4 pedal rotations. Feels like a chain skipping over and over. I bought my bike brand new from Canyon on July 9th. Today is July 13th. I have gone on 3 short rides and motor is already not working properly.
I have the Giant Reign E+ 2023 and you can adjust the "Assit" , "Torque" and "Launch" at every level. (Yamaha has 5). It gives me 400% assist and does have overrun. (If the front sprocket keeps going for a second after you stop pedalling is overrun). I think it is already updated as far as those issues. The only update for the sychdrive pro I would like is the automatic mode which lags a bit.
How does the battery efficiency compare to the Bosch system? I have two e-bikes, one with a Bosch GEN 4 motor and one with a Shimano EP8 motor, and I consistently get more kilometers per watt with the Bosch system. I hope this update can somehow make the Shimano EP801 more efficient in terms of energy use. I have hesitated to buy a bike with an EP801 because of this.
Hopefully all the other brands can up the game with software updates to the actual motors. Unlike Giant who just keep uodating bluetooth and nothing else, then brick the bikes.

Dont understand why we still have a mandated 20mph limit in our EMTBs... to run them in the MOUNTAIN. For me is one of the most obstrusive and awkward feelings of running a (restricted) EMTB. Riders in ACOUSTIC bikes can easily pedal upwards towards 30mph in fireroads or speed sections in the trails. Why bother restricting our EMTBs? If they are going to be used in the MOUNTAIN, let US run without restriction.

Doesn't make much difference if it's in the bike shop broken down again. Should put a bit more effort in making them more reliable IMO. Yet another tuber not calling them out on it.
Thanks for the update Rob. But it’s a hard no from me for any bike that uses a shinano motor. For a Japanese company they have a terrible practice of not selling any spare parts and you can’t get them repaired from anywhere. You can get spare parts for Yamaha, Bosch, brose so no excuse.

@@clintharper5509 Sadly this is a common occurrence with shamans motors. They are treating them as disposable which is terrible for the environment and the end user who gets left with a large bill. I hope bike builders / frame manufacturers stop using them until they sort out this bad practice.
Having had my EP8 RS motor replaced in my Rise once, 7 weeks out of warranty (luckily my LBS complained to supplier so it was replaced FOC as they initially wanted to charge me 100% replacement cost!), I doubt my next bike will have a Shimano motor. The motors that have failed the most often with all my riding buddies were all made by Shimano. Some have had 4+ motors replaced. Bosch and Brose (Specialized) not so much, by a long way! It's reliability and serviceability/repairability that will influence my next purchase when the time comes, and it won't be Shimano unless they really up their game in both aspects.
Wow! I’m surprised at the overwhelmingly negative response in the comments on this video. I for one am super stoked for this update. A lot of people weren’t even considering bikes unless they had the Bosch motor now there’s a much more level playing field when it comes to motor response. It’s probably easier for me to be positive as this directly improves the Ari Timp Peak that I ordered on Monday and anxiously await receiving.
There's a lot of bitterness from the EP8 as people who bought it really got screwed as they bought the worst motor with least power and range. And the problem with this update is they've blundered the overrun. Backpedaling canceling the overrun means it's still inferior to what Bosch motor's have been for the past 3 years.
@@stuka78 How does Yamaha compare? I've only ridden it indoors so can't really tell. But Yamaha had a slow start and then a strong pull in the middle from my experiment.
One thing which means I will never buy another Shimano motor: E10 … every single person I know eventually gets this error code and it’s basically a death sentence for the motor.

in your slo-mo vids you can see the chainsuck at the chainring from the huge wear of a derailleur system. This wear (shimano itself in his dealer seminars claims a lifetime of 300km for a 12g chain) is the biggest reason to never buy a derailleur-driven ebike. Pinion goes the right way with its MGU.
With a ep801 motor you need the electric di2 shifter, di2 Derailleur, and linkglide 11 speed to get auto shifting. I have it on my Ari Temp Peak. It took some time to dial in the settings with all the options, but it now works incredibly well. Excited to see how this update improves things further. I still manually shift about 1/5 of the time while in auto shift mode, but autoshift with an occasional manual shift to finetune the ride experience works out well for me.
Shimano dragging their heals once again, they're almost providing everything Bosch already does. They're only doing this because their competitors are bulling them into it, if they had they're way it would be a new model, with a slightly different mounting and it wouldn't be out for another 18 months.
As an owner of two emtb's, Bosch CX , and fazua ride 60, would be nice if Bosch hadn't just forgotten about the CX performance motor, there hasn't been any updates on the non smart system for a while, I guess all they care about is you upgrading to newer tech every 6 months, very disappointing Bosch.

What about the EP800 or EP8? Does it get the update as well?
Did you watch the video?
Unfortunately we that have the Old "new" EP800 (8 months in my new bike) don't have access to s simple function as "assist carry over function", that would improve a lot the way to handle the EP800 in hard conditions terrain, but I'm the guilty one by trusting in Shimano and by a bicycle with EP800.
👍YES, interesting info, thanks Rob😊👏👏👏
Now Shimano is back in Race, when they have the Over Run/Extended Assist and of course more peek power.
Slowly reducing the power after you stop pedaling is very nice. The only thing The havevto take care of is the display and put it in the frame like every other bike brands😂.
Is this latest EP801 engine anything you can by and put in your for example Orber Rise RS🤔, it would be nice to get my hand on one motor like this😂
This is huge, the EP801 felt so bad in comparison to my Brose. Mostly due to the overrun
Does this apply to the EP6
Me personally I wouldn’t touch a bike with a shamino motor in it, I know riders with numerous motors replaced over 1/2 year period. The plus side is their customer service is good at replacing
So sounds like a software update, do they use torque sensors or cadence sensors???
Shimano dont even has ep801 motor in stock nor di2 to
Supply on their bikes. I own a ep800 and now i see the new bikes with shimano ep801 carrying sram t type transmision instead of their own di2
Unfortunately it still doesn’t show power as bosch motors do. I’m pretty sure the motors have the sensors, therefore it’s just a matter of software. Big missed opportunity in my opinion.
any update maybe not this but another arrived for EP8000 as well?
I made this update to 4.3 in the EP6 of my e-bike OGGI Potenza Sport. I had hope the limit was update to 45km/h (27.9 MPH). But no success. Some new OGGI Forza model are coming with a EP6 with this new velocity to 45. I do not know why my Potenza do not has this update.
I'm from Brazil. We have different speed limits for e-bikes here. It is allowed 45km/h.
Can you imagine a motorcycle with a 1000 mile motor warranty?
My Bosch CX ran 3000 km before it started a sanding noise, the TQ 120 has now the third motor with 6000 km.

So annoying. I updated my 2024 Spectral:On CF8 with the e-tube app then took it out for a ride only for it to be completely bricked. Nothing worked.
I wonder if Yamaha will do this for Giant bikes?
I have the Giant Reign E+ 2023 and you can adjust the "Assit" , "Torque" and "Launch" at every level. (Yamaha has 5). It gives me 400% assist and does have overrun. (If the front sprocket keeps going for a second after you stop pedalling is overrun). I think it is already updated as far as those issues. The only update for the sychdrive pro I would like is the automatic mode which lags a bit.
+ more Power would be nice
How does the battery efficiency compare to the Bosch system? I have two e-bikes, one with a Bosch GEN 4 motor and one with a Shimano EP8 motor, and I consistently get more kilometers per watt with the Bosch system. I hope this update can somehow make the Shimano EP801 more efficient in terms of energy use. I have hesitated to buy a bike with an EP801 because of this.
@@emilysona the most efficient motor? Yamaha
Hopefully all the other brands can up the game with software updates to the actual motors. Unlike Giant who just keep uodating bluetooth and nothing else, then brick the bikes.
What version is the update? I just updated to version and it updated the speed controller and motor.
Is this update for all EP8 motors?
Nope 😢. Disappointing.
Ep801
@@mq1506 😢 shame on Shimano for not supporting owners with previous gen EP8. So happy with my Levo Carbon Comp Brose motor. I’m so happy with Specialized support. I have an EP8 bike and don’t ser myself purchasing another bike with Shimano motors.

Hi, my etube app is saying that there is a drive unit update available for my Orbea Rise M10. is this the one do you think?
Is this available for EP801 RS on Orbea Rise? Did i understand correctly, that this update cannot be performed via the app??
I guess no updates for the E7000 motor?
Are they finally going to make spare parts available? Or when things go wrong you're in deep £££?
How do we get the update on Canyon On bikes?
Is this update planed for old 2023 Rise Hydro too?
Just did the firmware update for my 801. Now both firmware and phone app are up to date. How come I can't find the carry over and cut-off functions anywhere?
Because you never took it to your dealer
Hmm firmware so I guess it doesn't fix the rattle on descents?
And my EP801 can’t switch automatically from range extender to internal battery when the RE turns less than 10% of charge 😢
No OTA updates in 2024? Rly?
can i buy it by itself or do i have to buy a bike with it?
Dont understand why we still have a mandated 20mph limit in our EMTBs... to run them in the MOUNTAIN.
For me is one of the most obstrusive and awkward feelings of running a (restricted) EMTB.
Riders in ACOUSTIC bikes can easily pedal upwards towards 30mph in fireroads or speed sections in the trails. Why bother restricting our EMTBs?
If they are going to be used in the MOUNTAIN, let US run without restriction.
If you're in the UK it's a 15.5mph limit!
Does this work for the EP6? 2024
Has the shimano Ep6 got any new updates 😊
Bringing bike to a dealer for an update is like so 2000s for cars.
The bloody things have bluetooth. Why not update over bluetooth?
No kidding, especially since there are a lot of direct to consumer brands. There is no such thing as a YT dealer outside of CA.
More money 💰
Who cares, we all want the Pinion.
Ha ha so right 😂
can the 2022 EP8 motor receive the race firmware?
how it fare vs my bafang bbshd for climbing reparability ,overal ease of maintaince?
Have they got rid of the rattle?😁
Does it apply to the Ep8 or 801 only?
801 only
Top Bad, I would like that feature set for my EP8
Hi! I was wondering if you have ever been able to unlock a Shimano EP801 motor with an E299 error code? I am having such a hard time to find someone who can fix it from being on a safe mode. Can you or anyone help?
Maybe I am the only one who loved the natural feeling of no „overrun“ because it felt more like a non electric bike 🤷♂️

Meanwhile my old Shimano still does great..and the new DJI system is even better
Doesn't make much difference if it's in the bike shop broken down again. Should put a bit more effort in making them more reliable IMO. Yet another tuber not calling them out on it.
That's what I am wondering. When are they going to make motors more reliable?
What are the reliability issues with Shimano motors and being in the shop a lot?
@zacbaca6127 in general emtb motors are unreliable because they are made out of plastic and melt easily.
@kevinburke1325 absolutely, Madison refused my last warranty claim as I'd "had enough replacement motors" laughable.
@@rockmount181and i bet you never got more than 4000 miles out any of the motors, e010 issues?
They need to do it for the EP8 as well, otherwise they are idiots. Plain and simple.
Does anyone know if you can replace Ep8 with the EP801?
you can yes but you also need to replace screen controller, wiring etc so quite expensive
Battery and battery connector wiring is different so you have to change that
No, the mounts are different.
@@cleggycyclistNo you cant, the motor mounting is different
Interesting that you get rid of the motor and you get rid of the problem where there was none to begin with....
This firmware update bricked my 2024 Canyon Spectral:On after installing over the air via e-tube. No solutions. Anybody else?
Thanks for the update Rob. But it’s a hard no from me for any bike that uses a shinano motor.
For a Japanese company they have a terrible practice of not selling any spare parts and you can’t get them repaired from anywhere. You can get spare parts for Yamaha, Bosch, brose so no excuse.
They are ruining their reputation by not doing this, I got the code come up e010 & the shop can't fix it & if I want it fixed I have to buy a new motor for £920 fitted, it disgust me that there's a fault that if found would probably cost less than a hundred pounds to fix but it's far more profitable for shimano to sell you a new motor, which makes the customer feel like there being coned, so for that reason I am now moving over to a bosch cx.
Wait - EP owners have to pay a dealer to do updates? That's insane.
More broken chains are part of the update too
None of these at the same level as Yamaha, in terms of motor response

Rob wtf are you refering to regarding "auto shift" ? You talking about a motor feature or a derailer?
Both. Shimano have a new electronic mech that pairs with this EP801 motor that enables automatic shifting.
How does someone obtain the update and upload it onto their bike?
Listen to the video
@@TAZMON20 yea I did. Not all brands have dealers. Might have to find a brand that runs the same motor and see if they will help out

I went with Bosch because of reliability and service support. So even though this is nice, it's not solving my real issues with Shimano motor

Not a lot of love for Shimano in the comments. 🤔
