    Like a classic commercial states, "Go Greyhound, and leave the driving to us! America is discovering the comfort and convenience of G R E Y H O U N D"...reality is often disappointing. I'm quite impressed with Jackson's highway engineering knowledge on top of all his quality diner knowledge! Blue Mountain is a ridge that runs for 150 miles or 240 km from the Delaware Water Gap to Franklin County! It reaches an elevation of 2,270 ft above sea level just north of the PA Turnpike! Regarding South Midway, at one point, if westbound travelers wanted to visit the lunchroom in the South Midway rest stop from North Midway, they were able to gain access to the plaza via a now-closed pedestrian tunnel. North Midway used to be even SMALLER!
    Here are some elk facts: The word "elk" originally referred to the European variety of the moose, Alces alces, but was transferred to Cervus canadensis by North American colonists. It is also known as the wapiti, a Shawnee and Cree word meaning "white rump", referring to its lighter fur in the rear. Weighing in at up to 700 pounds, the North American elk stands as one of the biggest deer species on earth. A mature bull can run as fast as 40 miles per hour, they’ve even been able to outrun horses in short races. And elk can jump eight feet vertically.

    Dayton was founded on April 1, 1796, by 12 settlers known as the Thompson Party. They traveled in March from Cincinnati up the Great Miami River by pirogue and landed there. The city was named after Jonathan Dayton, a captain in the American Revolution who signed the U.S. Constitution and owned a significant amount of land in the area. Dayton was originally born in Elizabethtown, or now just Elizabeth in NJ. Dayton was arrested in 1807 for alleged treason in connection with Aaron Burr's conspiracy to establish an independent country in the Southwestern US and parts of Mexico. He was exonerated by a grand jury and never tried.
    White Castle was founded in September 1921, in Wichita, Kansas, and was the world's first fast-food hamburger chain. The burgers were initially priced at five cents in 1921 (76 cents in 2023 money) until 1929 and remained at 10 cents until 1949. Before White Castle, cofounder Walter Anderson opened his first diner in a converted streetcar in 1916. He teamed up with Billy Ingram, a real-estate and insurance man, in order to create a chain. And since Mount Laurel was briefly mentioned, Mount Laurel was incorporated as a township by an act of the NJ Legislature in March 1872, from portions of Evesham Township. The township was named for a hill covered with laurel trees...very straight to the point

    Theres something so greyhound about closing a bus station in the middle of a large city in the NEC where bus travel is a big factor in transportation. Really drills it in making people feel shittier for deciding to take a bus for them to wait on the sidewalk in the hot sun, rain or freezing cold without any bathrooms.

      I think the issue is that they’re broke because their business gets taken by everyone else in the northeast. Amtrak is good enough that it takes the business away from the high quality bus companies, so they take Greyhound’s business. But the Chinatown bus is cheaper than Greyhound, so they just get squeezed out.

    Ah yes, my favorite current country...V E R M O N T. Vermont was actually its own country once though! It started in January 1777 when delegates from 28 towns met and declared independence from the colonies of Quebec, NY, and NH. However, they weren't recognized by any foreign power. Many Vermonters took part in the revolution, but the Continental Congress did not recognize the NH Grants (Vermont also called that) because of objections from NY. Vermont then attempted to join the Province of Quebec which was accepted by the British, offering generous terms. But when the British surrendered in Yorktown, it became clear Vermont needed to consider joining the United States. Which they joined in 1791.
    Ethan Allen was one of the founders of Vermont and helped capture Fort Ticonderoga early in the Revolutionary War. He led the Green Mountain Boys in a campaign of intimidation and property destruction to drive New York settlers from the region, and he declared independence for the Vermont Republic after being released in a prisoner exchange from the British because he attempted to capture Montreal. Allen and his brothers purchased tracts of land that became Burlington. Thus, for being a Vermont hero, Amtrak named the Ethan Allen Express after him

    Aww dude… damned. I’ve got stories to tell about Greyhound and Continental Trailways bus journeys.
    I was a young kid in the 70’s and my mom dragged me and my sister not once, but twice from Los Angeles, CA to Orlando, FL to visit my grandparents.
    1977 and 1980.
    On the 1977 return trip my dad joined us and we went from Florida to New Orleans, spent a few days there, and then rode the Amtrak Sunset Limited back to L.A. in flippin’ COACH omg. Strangely enough, that experience made me a lifelong Amtrak fan.
    Anyhow, from watching this video, all I can say is the Greyhound experience is not much different than it was 40+ years ago. Those middle of the night / early morning “wake up and get off the bus!” moments were always surreal and kind of fun from a lunatic’s perspective.
    I am seriously impressed with you and your friends’ journeys. Keep this shit up.

    I just noticed the “new” Greyhound stop at Dayton in this video.
    When I traveled Cincinnati to Toledo via Greyhound in 2019, they stopped at a shared terminal with the Transit Busses (including one of the trolley us routes)
    It seems in this video, they took an old Tax Office strip mall building and renovated it into a stand-alone greyhound stop. Whats bad is now there’s no easy connections to the Dayton transit system.

I just don’t understand why these major bus companies would do this to customers like this. I have never written on a Flixbus, however, heard many terrible stories about their service.

    One thing I've noticed about Greyhound Stations.....I've been in quite a few when I was young and broke but wanted to travel as much as I can....With a few exceptions, if you been to one, you've been to them all.....Rock hard seating, maybe a vending machine or 2 that actually works.....If you're lucky you'll get some random 30 year old arcade game that's blaring music as loud as it can and a cafeteria selling dollar store frozen food for $15, but you can't leave the station to find food because it's in the worst possible spot in the city with the highest crime and you hope the 2 rent a cops can somewhat keep things in order....Although you know darn good and well the likelihood of that actually happening are slim to none, so you keep entertained by watching the homeless beg for money.....
    That's about 90-95% of all Greyhound Stations in major cities

    I purchased a round trip ticket to México City and back to Orlando.
    Upon arriving in Houston our bus arrived 4 hours late. Upon leaving and arriving in San Antonio there was no apparent desire to board/disboard with any urgency to try and arrived in Monterrey within any semblence of the hours scheduled. In San Antonio it took a whole hour to board the passengers before heading to Laredo and finally Monterrey.
    All of this was after stopping at múltiple stations that were dirty and with barely functioning bathrooms.
    Upon arriving in Laredo the individual attending was at least the first person who tried helping but unfortunately misdirected me. Because the bus arrived late and the misinformation I Lost 12 hours without being able to sleep in Laredo. Luckily in Monterrey they have proper understanding of how to manage transport and I was able to arrive in México City without more complications.
    I have used buses and public transport in EVERY part of the world from Thailand to Europe and have never had such a terrible experience.

    @5:17 the south midway plaza also features a "museum" of turnpike memorabilia. It's really just one display wall behind glass but interesting to look at while waiting for coffee.

    @4:42 one of these abandoned tunnels and its section of turnpike is accessible if you get off at Breezewood and go a short distance east on US 30. Years ago I rode my bike through the abandoned tunnel but ran over some broken glass and popped a tire. If you ever visit be careful!

    If you want a really really long direct bus you should head down to South America where they have one from Lima, Peru to Buenos Aires, Argentina crossing Tropic of Capricorn ♑!It takes 3 days! Australia must have some long ones too assuming that they do something direct from Sydney to Perth?

    • @MilesinTransit
      @MilesinTransit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is there actually a way to book the South American one, though? I've looked into this and not found anything yet! The longest in Australia would be Adelaide to Darwin, which would be awesome to do!

    • @MilesinTransit
      @MilesinTransit  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's for the stops when they kick everyone off (in itself quite a Greyhound phenomenon) - you use it to get priority boarding when you get back on the bus.

    • @nickhiscock8948
      @nickhiscock8948 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @MilesinTransit doesn't the original ticket have seat numbers on it? Hence no need to be on 1st as your seat is allocated for whole trip?

      @MilesinTransit  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nickhiscock8948 I haven't done a long enough trip since they started assigning seats to know for sure, but I know they still do reboarding passes. I guess just for the illusion of priority?

    Have you seen a picture of the "new" station in Columbus? It is an old gas station about five miles west of downtown. Greyhound(FLIX) did not receive a legal occupancy permit. The city is trying to close it.

    • @MilesinTransit
      @MilesinTransit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't seen any pictures, just looked on Google Maps, but it looks so awful! Where would they go if the station got closed? I'm not sure what the status is on this, but I read that they just stopped serving Huntsville, AL because they couldn't agree on a station location with the city...

      @BoratWanksta 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MilesinTransitSo I'm not 100% sure how true this claim I once read online from someone else is, but when Greyhound was sold to a new company, someone else claimed they sold the ownership rights for their bus stations to some private equity company. Not sure why they did that, since to me I am thinking WHY would you want riders to wait in the cold and other inclement weather? I know in Milwaukee, Greyhound/Flixbus uses the Milwaukee Intermodial Station(along with Amtrak), which has a good indoor waitong room for passengers to wait for the bus. In Chicago they still have their traditional bus station building in use for now, but there are a lot of current rumors that this station building may be redeveloped. To me(if i were Flix/Greyhound) I'd move the bus station boarding/dropoff area over to Chicago Union Station(as it has a designated bus boarding/dropoff area on Canal St), but that is just me.
      A few years ago, I rememher noticing the long time Greyhound bus maintenance building in Chicago got demolished, when doing a bike ride myself on Halsted. Supposedly new apartments will eventually be built on this site, but for now no new construction has started on this site.
