Huge KISS and Marshall freak myself, and been following your videos for a long time. Always a pleasure. Thank you for making such great videos and validating my otherwise useless but most important interests!
EDDIE KRAMER will always be the Old School Studio recording GENIUS 😁 Let's face it, technology is great, but this was all accomplished without ridiculous over production studio productions of today Thank you as always JOHAN.. Amazing Production and keeping it Real🤩🤟
Very impressive! Love your enthusiasm on the subject and it sounded just great. Amazing that we can now recreate classic tones for our own music. Cheers!
love Rock n Roll Over, I waited at the record store for delivery when it so I would have it the day it came out! You do a great job capturing those tones, thanks Johan for all you do!
Let's Go! Yes, I was pretty lucky to have attended the Kiss Alive concert at Cobo Arena mid 70's Detroit Michigan Rory Gallegher open the show against the grain tour glad you have the fire for Ace's tone and gear! Keep chasing that tone brother!
@@JohanSegeborn yea, it was pretty exciting, the girl I was with decided to go down to the stage and try to catch Paul Stanley's guitar when he breaks it and throws it in the audience, he actually through it to her and she said everyone pulled out of her hands she was so excited, later in life she became a school teacher and one of her students brought a "Kiss Doll" to school in class and they asked the teacher if they ever heard of this band, guess we didn't know at the time how many lives this band would reach, the teacher by the way acknowledged saying " Yes, I think I've heard of them" love seeing the videos of these historic shows and watching your videos, keep the dream alive my brother!
Sounds killer Johan!! I’m a fan of the tones on those classic Kiss records, and you’ve successfully reproduced them!! Next time breath fire and spit blood!! Cheers
Hejsan Johan. My initial answer got lost, seemingly and Yes, they used the old theatre, 20 mins drive from Ace's house. A "Record Plant" truck was parked outside. My only correction is Peters drums were in the Barth room, probably because of ambience. Even though Ace did retire his tobacco burst Les Paul with the shaved heal and it was used as "the smoker"; it still had the hand wound Dimarzio in the bridge. He haven't purchased the cherry sunburst '74 custom yet. It was done prior to touring. There is a gab in the information regarding this and we're close to the purchase of his 1959, though I don't think he had it yet. But a that time he had juniors and Specials. I remember a picture of Ace from "Ace in the Hole studio" with his old tobacco burst as double cut and black finish. I tried to play some licks with a setup of: Les Paul Special with P90, Boss GT-8 processor (with compression, cutting the mid @ 850 Hz and +3 db @ 1150 Hz; a Marshall Haze head with 6V6 tubes and a 4X12" with G12H R/C cone in the top and G12H '71 greenbacks in the bottom. Amazing option you get to actually "read" frequencies. I believe I can get pretty close with the Boss GT-8 guitar processor, but not as close as you, off cause (I am using my ears
That's really cool! I'm gonna see if I can find a function/plugin that does that on my DAW. It starts with the drums on a hard rock mix with a lot of middy guitars and bass. Those scooped sounds make room for the guitars and bass. I read an interview with Butch Vig where he was talking about how he mixed his drums before he was famous, when he was recording demos and punk rock bands and such. He said he had his own kit set up in the studio, and he scooped 7db at around 350hz and then he always had room for bass and thick guitars. This is a more subtle version of the same thing. The bass is also scooped slightly around the guitar mids, with some upper mids added for attack, which I've been trying to do as a bass player with varying degrees of success. Switching from guitar to bass is pretty humbling when it comes to live sound.
Hi Johan Great watching any ace vids you do ,best around Ace also used some of his Gibson loaded pickup lesters and teles on a lot of the record as he still does. I Heared years ago in an interview or somewhere that Ace would sometimes replace his g string with a really thick one nearly as thick as his d string for better sound . I recently saw a picture of ace in tuning room with what looked like a thicker string maybe he did this for King of the night time world big bend who knows .Paul would also do this for bottom strings before we had hybrd sets.
Great video! RnRO is my fav Kiss album! I also think Ace's DiMarzio Super Distortion bridge pickup played a role in how they got those fat and creamy tones. Very interesting how they EQd the guitars. Could you share the EQ setup? Which frequeincies were boosted or cut? Thanks!
YOUR recording sounds BETTER! Digital is always more transparent than magnetic tape! GOOD call putting the sidewinder/mudbucker at the bridge! That is WHERE it should have been put in the 1st place! I thought Gene's bass tone was terrible on this album, all middy and grungy! I remixed those tracks, to make them sound more modern! I think I succeeded! I made Gene's bass sound more punchy by adding in more sub 100hz eq back into it! GOOD recreation of that era KISS! You WANT a challenge? TRY the KISS ALIVE! sound! Match THAT!! Kramer worked on THAT too! \m/
Hi Johan. Man, I've been watching u for years now and I been dying to know.... How do u have access to so much vintage equipment? Do u own most of it? If so, I'm guessing u have a really great day job that has supported ur vintage gear addiction? I hope it isn't too personal to ask but again, I been dying to know for years. Cheers my friend 🍻

Har faktiskt tagit bort alla rumsmickar eftersom rumsljudet krockar med andra instrument. Eddie har packat mixen perfekt. Körde snabbt delay istället. Tror Ace brukade köra snabbt Roland tape echo en del.

I read on the book BLACK DIAMOND, Peter says that some tracks were recorded inside a bathroom to get a natural reverb.

Is that the super distortion pickup? That's part of the magic
The SG currently has a BB3 in the bridge. Super Distortion is indeed the way to go

Thanks man! Have a nice weekend you too!
EQ matched tones sound great. Very interesting principle. Do Kemper amps implement a similar approach?
Thanks! I think Kemper is baser on modeling and impulse responses
With the half stacks, an SG and the EB-3, you could likely do some rather convincing Cream material as well!
My first kiss album. When Dr. Love was on KC Casem top 40? It turned me onto electric.

@@JohanSegeborn Yep!
Maybe the 10ft distance bass mic is how they achieved the delay you’re hearing. Assuming they also went direct
Good point, but the left and right hard panned bass channels are identical but for the delay
All your song needs is lead vocals by Johan! Nice work.

the best g12m greenback riff is blitzkrieg bob from the ramones
i like for Kiss the tone the g12h 75hz more than the g12m 75hz because the g12h had more cuting edge for heavy rock
Those sound great too, but Marshall actually never had the H75 in their cabs
