And then I've read advertisements saying the stock iron block was 250+ and you save near 120 lbs by going to alum block. Nope, only 60ish again. Even though 124 lbs is a lot, it's not the near 200 lbs that a lot would hope for. Thanks for showing the truth.

Hey Mike! You should be able to lift the arm on the hoist by hand (5:48) to get it to where you want it or take the slack out of the straps instead of standing there and pumping 40 times (Where the video cut lol)..... At least that has worked on all the pickers Ive used over the years.....
I have the inside mic’s and outside micrometers along with dial indicators, or let’s just say I’ve blueprinted a number of motors. Dial calipers can flex if you aren’t careful. 😀

You input crank shaft length (center of main journal to center of crankpin journal), connecting rod length (center of rod bearing bore to center of wrist pin bore), and engine rpm of interest. The output is max piston speed and a graph of piston speed vs crank shaft position in degrees. I really hope you read this because I'd love to pass it along to you!
I can certainly vouch for how difficult it is to find big blocks in junkyards nowadays. Even the Vortec 8100s are impossible to find. I was looking for a big block Chevy and ended up calling 30 junkyards before finding one with a 1990 4 bolt 454 that ran for $750. Seemingly, this junkyard incedentaly had every old engine ever too, from Chrysler Industrial Hemis, to Ford Flatheads, to Chrysler Poly 318's, to a 426 Hemi, to an LS7 (!) 454, that the owner was keeping for his own project.
I hope I at least get a chance to see you work on the truck a little after New Year's this year if I might add. anyways I'm a big fan of Finnegan's garage you're so years before so happy holidays. and cheers !!!

The word virgin means pure and free from any other metals like fillers when recycled so pretty much it's never been stamped or pressed.. had a lot of time in my hands 🤓
Aluminum is obviously lighter, but you need a LOT of it to match the strength of steel - hence why the block is only 65lbs lighter. Same for suspension parts and anything else that has to be strong on a car.
Gotta also take into account the design of the block.The new aluminum block may be of a better design than a 40 year old cast iron block,and so they don't need as much material as you'd think.
Lee L Aluminium's thermal properties are much better than cast iron. It conducts heat much better. Heat kills power. They even sometimes fill parts of the aluminium block with strengthening material and the weight isn't much less than cast iron. Aluminium by conducting heat better moves the heat from the engine faster.

Those CAS crane scales are from Korea, they are pretty good. A 2 piece setup (separate loadcell & indicator) with Chinese parts would be about $60 + eye bolts & calibration, that can be done with any known weight even water.

Aluminum is great until you have a cooling issue and it melts 😁 My old man bought me a 1962 Buick Special project car back when I was getting ready to start driving. It had a 215 aluminum V8 in it. Pretty wild how light the block was.
That's a sweet engine. I always thought you ordered your pistons first, then the machine shop measures them and fits the bore size to them. I mean, why would you need custom sized pistons to match a bore you can make any size you want?

Hydro Auto Salvage in Hydro, OK has a lot of the 4 bolt main engines. He even has some Cadillac 500s. It's off of I-40. You will have to stop by sometime on your way through!
I've always heard that all things being equal (flow and such) you'll make more power with iron because it holds the heat in better, but the trade off is more weight compared to an all aluminum block/heads/intake.
yeah most of the any size v-8s are tough to find in any brand lol 598 is a lot of displacement the ls is all aluminum except for some early truck motors and they hold up fairly well
Great show !....I know that the iron BB is around 770lbs ....My small block is around 550lbs ....I had things front end springs and such setup for a BB,(Crank and heads = HEAVY , in an extreme way !) ,so and but after working with someone on their BB I went big small block !

I liked your discussion of what the difference in power would be between identical cast iron and aluminum engines. I've been wondering about that for years. I think the cast iron engine would make slightly more power, but not enough to overcome the weight penalty to actually make a car faster.
Take two engine blocks of the same external dimensions, but different displacement. The block with the greater displacement will weigh less simply because more material has been removed from the bores etc...
Virgin means it's cast from foundry ingots, does not contain any recycled aluminum in it. If the foundry knows what it is doing, it should matter if it's Virgin or not.

If I have an iron block i want iron heads . I won't mismatch iron and aluminum because I feel Thermo expansion at the diff temps causes strain on the hg over time.
I've got a 598 BBC sitting in my garage, cast GM performance 10.2 block with brodix heads and intake if you need to compare one to and all aluminum one.
I was just googled it and can't find an article about it either so I propose that you ask fryburger and dulchech do that on a future episode of engine masters
Inch for inch an iron engine will make more power, as will an iron head. Though you seldom find an iron head that flows as well as an alloy. Iron holds the heat better and an engine is a heat pump. Plus an alloy engine flexes more. An alloy head though will soak up some detonation so when you push the limits you can give 1-2 deg timing more. Not recomended for endurance engines! And then ofcourse many motorsport categories stipulate OEM blocks which are iron. Usually heads are free.

that is a solid way to do it. but, if you have a really good machinist working on the block and the pistons then you can do it the other way.

Why wouldn't calipers be accurate enough for a rough measurement? That's what a machinist uses before he pulls out the big guns.
