Mike, you're like a good wine getting better with age. Just so lovely to watch and good to understand some of the intricate technicalities for me as a non-photographer. Your photos were always great when you gave your talks to our society so its great to see you carrying on the good work. Keep it up.
Absolutely fascinating to watch, and possibly your best video yet, to my mind!! I had no idea a little owl would take a mole. Never too old to learn something new!
Another inspiring video and challenging to start filming slow motion! I am more of a photographer but this afternoon I practiced the slow motion setting on a couple of quarreling coots. Great to see! Mike, thanks for sharing this inspiring video!
Wonderful video Mike 👍 was a pleasure to watch these Woodpeckers in slow motion, and the Little Owl with a Mole, never knew they took em. Thanks for sharing 📸
👍🏼thanks for sharing..i've got owlies & woodies in the woods along my farm track, i know they're there, i hear em, but i never see em, frustrating, but hope springs eternal 🙏
Wonderful footage. I too am fascinated by video and slow motion video. My last trip to Yellowstone was one where I spent several days working on video footage. Very fun stuff.
Mike: How about a video for us non-video shooters about how to set up and video in slo-mo with the OM-1? Focus settings, when to hit the AF on button, metering mode, etc.?
Hi Mike. Would be great if you could share your video settings for the OM-1 Mk II. I’ve struggled a bit finding settings that stay on focus with the subject (used with the 300mm F4 lens and x 1.4 teleconverter). Great video as always!
Hi Mike, great bit of slow motion video! As you say, I could watch slo-mo vid all day as well. Great shots of both the little owl & Gt spotted woodpecker, loved the shots where you can see it’s tongue probing into the cavities it’s just excavated, First class, more of the same!
One of your best Mike lovely video. With regard to the automation I personally don’t think it will ever replace the artistry and enthusiasm that people like yourself bring to Photography and videography.
Exhalant Mike, it makes a great watch while you eat your breakfast on a rainy Saturday morning. No, I haven't tried slow motion, but after seeing that, I will give it a try.
Lovely footage, especially the Woodpeckers marking holes in slo mo. I don’t do much video, but do enjoy the slow-mo on my G9 ii, I got some lovely footage of Gannets landing at Bempton.
Superbe vidéo impressionnant le pic épeiche au ralentie ............................................................................................... Superb video impressing the spotted woodpecker in slow motion
Excellent video. Loved the footage of the GSP Woodpecker. I am just starting my journey into video. There is a lot to learn especially with the editing. Hopefully I will start to get some footage and maybe look at putting it on you tube. Your channel has given me a lot of inspiration. Thanks.
Super film as always Mike , have you considered doing a video specifically around the settings / techniques/ kit etc to capture wildlife video footage as you clearly have it down to a fine art ?
Great footage. Apparently, the woodpecker's skull is specially designed to withstand repeated blows and to protect the bird's brain from concussion. Unlike other birds, the bones between the beak and the skull are joined by a flexible cartilage, which cushions the shock of each blow.
Always a treat starting the weekend with late morning coffee and a new video from you Mike! I was sceptic to the bird-eye detection but now when I have it , I love it. But I recently set it to of on my OM-1 when I use pro-capture. If there's more than one bird on a treestub and want to nail a bird-fight the focus tend to catch both birds better somehow. One thing I will try out is to follow the bird a little bit when it take of and then press the shutter fully down in pro-capture.Maybee I get more keepers then. But all my braincells are on the shutter so I usualy press right after the bird take of and end up with the one shot with fully wingspread.. Has anybody else thought about trying that?
I have a lot of YT films on settings for Om cameras. See this Playlist. th-cam.com/play/PLXAW-oUs6ItHbeTbVNnrHO-zn7yRyGiPN.html Most are on the Mk1, but there are few differences to the Mk2.
Great video mike enjoyed the slow motion and pro capture. I have just invested in the Sony A9iii for pre capture 120fps and better video auto focus. I couldn’t wait any longer for the features of the OM 1/2. Amazing tech these days. I thought I had better join the party 🎉
Superb footage and stills of both the Great Spotted Woodpeckers and Little Owl. Having been raised on a farm, I am well acquainted with owls, however, I was surprised to see the Little Owl with the mole. I was unaware that Little Owls could tackle a mole. Did the Owl actually catch and kill the mole or did it pick it up as carrion?
Little Owl is not native to the UK, as you probably know. But now I hear for the first time that it is declining in your country. It is my favourite Owl species and few weeks ago I took some photographs of it for the first time in my life. I fed the birds with mealworms ;-)
Very enjoyable Mike. I’ve been there a couple of times but never seen the woodpeckers from the hide. Nor the mole capture. I’m hoping to return when I’m able to. Would the 150-600 be a good choice to replace my Canon prime, now sold to reduce the weight I carry?
Two years ago I visited Park Lime Pits, Walsall and found a pair of breeding Little Owls in the big oak tree close to Riddian bridge, I'm sure you know of them but are they still there Mike?
Thank you very much for a great video. As always, it is a pleasure to see your photos and videos. I really like that you talk about how you work. What video setting on the OM-1 mkII did you use for slow motion on the woodpecker?
@@MikeLaneFRPS He told me that ProCapture was only suitable for `very old photographers` like you and me ! 😕 He says that `real men` do not use it ! 😂😂😂

@@MikeLaneFRPS I want to shoot slow motion wildlife videos, but I only have the OM-1. The G9ii autofocus is not great, so it can't completely replace my OM-1. I would rather not carry around two bodies and change lenses whenever I want to switch between video and photos. I wish M43 had a camera body that had OM-1 AF performance and G9ii video performance.
@5:30 this woodpecker could really use some nicer looking slowmotion. G9II 120/25p nearly 5x slow motion would be really great. OM-1 unfortunately doesn't do this scene justice. I must say as a G9II and OM-1 owner it is hard for me to find usecase where the use of OM-1 would be advantageous to me.
To each their own. Mike has shown in earlier video he also uses G9ii for video. Mike has stated he prefers G9ii for video of Birds. On this occasion, seems all he had in hand was OM1-mkii. This footage is brilliant, I believe. A feller uses the tools he has at hand. Really enjoy how Mike swaps back and forth, one camera to the other. The woodpecker flight shots were wonderful and in slow mo video you could really see the force it was putting in to start the hole off 👍
Thanks.
Fabulous Mike, as always a real pleasure to watch. Slow motion footage absolutely mesmerising. Top work indeed 👍
Many thanks!
Slow motion woodpeckers are fascinating to watch!

I loved those slo mo woodpeckers, Mike.

Looks like a very successful day's filming, Mike. In some countries eg Indonesia, they keep owls as pets, much like we do with parrots.

Super film as always Mike , have you considered doing a video specifically around the settings / techniques/ kit etc to capture wildlife video footage as you clearly have it down to a fine art ?
Apart from the settings I talk about such things a lot. I am reluctant to go into video settings as too many I do not understand. Still new to me.

Hard to follow small birds. Larger species a bit easier
I gues your right on the small ones. Will try it out on some blackbirds or larger.🙂@@MikeLaneFRPS
I can't figure this camera out (OM-1 MK II). Hoping you could show your basic settings in a video. Great work! Kevin
My apologies, not for video but for continuous non- silent photography... Thx.

None silent continous shooting is just a matter of selecting "Seqential" in the fps menu. I have never used it, but if that is what you mean.
👌.

Optically the 150-600 is very good, but it is heavy for a MFT lens.
Thanks Mike, if I decide to get it, I would probably just use for hide work.

Thank you very much for a great video. As always, it is a pleasure to see your photos and videos. I really like that you talk about how you work. What video setting on the OM-1 mkII did you use for slow motion on the woodpecker?
I do not remember and there is no Exit data unlike stills photography. It was either 120 fos 4K or 240 fps HD.
Great as usual. What is the deal with the owl's left eye?
I could not give it a name, but a flaw in the eye.
@@MikeLaneFRPS It's a coloboma. I should have known better, I had the ophthalmology exam way too long ago...
@@arpadszabo6170thanks for this information. I photographed a Short eared owl this year with the same condition, and was wondering what it was.

Awesome video, what time of year did you go? I'm booked into the hide on 31st and hoping for similar conditions and activity!
Great video again, do you need a new camera for slow motion or can you slow it down in editing on a computer?
Best to do slow motion in the camera and most cameras allow this.
Beautiful From 5:10-5:15 I see a bit of choppiness. I have seen this in other om1 videos. Is this a setting, a shortcoming or youtube compression?
