At first I wasn't sure about the new rule change using health but after watching the first 5 min I actually agree with the change. From what I observed the ball does more damage based off of ball speed. You lose a chunk of health whenever you get hit. Your health begins to flash to indicate to the player that if the ball hits them at that current speed that they will lose a stock/life. It's a surprisingly simple and elegant solution that allows the game to be a bit more forgiving when compared to lethal league 1. Great job @Team Reptile Edit: Also Woolie is wrong. Throwing the ball is a new feature in Blaze, it was not present at all in Lethal League 1
It's a "what killed me" rage counter and I think it works ok. It kinda takes away the divekick suspense, but I think it's a good choice for match flow.
In the original it just felt lame when you had a couple bursts where the ball never got to get to a decent speed. The faster the ball the more fun I tended to be having so I'm happy bursts can't end suddenly when the ball is still slow.
there was no HP in the first one, everything was insta death. the environments used to be 2d with 2d character sprites, now everything is 3d models and 3d stages. Grabbing the ball is also new, the first one only had hits and bunts and the Y button was used for taunting.
I agree, having health was a good change. There were way too many times where I got killed going for the ball at the same instant as my opponent. I like the catching mechanic as a way to fake out your opponent.
The more I looked at it the more I thought the throwing was new. Throwing and health do introduce new strategies though as throwing is like a shotgun, while health allows for you to chip at your opponents health and gives a reason to also charge up for a better reason than just style points.
The Switch is a VERY solid system. Not the most powerful graphically but it has plenty of power in system handling. I have yet to see the system struggle to keep up when a lot is happening on screen.

The game is pretty intuitive and the controls are responsive. It’s no surprise how quickly they got a handle on the basics. I wish they had the “how to play 2” unlocked so they could learn tech like parrying and parry countering.

For anyone wondering, a full powered ground attack or a forward air are both smash attacks. A smash doubles the speed of the ball, while a regular hit only increases it by 1. The ball takes longer to launch depending on how much speed it has and how much you are adding, so when the ball is flying at around super fast you can either try and take control and double the speed making even harder to hit or go for a rapid-fire launch.

Little do they know bunt makes the ball slower, but if you bunt a ball thats already pausing everything or screen turns black, there won't be a pause if you hit the ball after the bunt and the ball will just go fast while staying deadly.

This might get buried in the comments but there a few systems not touched in here that add some depth to the game: - To avoid Pat's technique of point-blank shots on fast balls, you can spend a bit of meter to parry, by pressing Bunt during Hitlag. This shields the ball from a hit and you can hold it to delay the Hitlag. -To counter THAT, the new Grab mechanic beats parrying, so you can fake out your opponent. -No need to predict the ball launch, the Boombox at the bottom charges the volume after an attack. When the bar is full, the ball will fly - Every character has a movement quirk plus a double jump that they barely used. Switch rides walls and the ceiling, Raptor has a walljump, Candyman jumps high, Jet hovers, etc. - The ball only doubles speed by Aerial Attacks with a direction, Charged Attacks and after a bunt. The game is pretty Amazing and feels much more balanced than the last one, please give this one a try!
Some food for thought, you can continue your special for every time you hit the ball after the special was activated. This was in the previous game as well, this is especially effective with candymains

the pauseless hit in your first match was cause of the power attack, Charging until it released by itself. when you power attack it cancels a lot of the hitlag, just like when you bunt and then hit.
For heads up, the new mechanics are the grabs, the health, and the fact that all characters have a straight down angle they can hit. Also there's a way to parry that the tutorial still doesn't teach you for some goddamn reason (was hoping they'd throw that in since the last game didnt teach it either). Hit bunt while in the hitstun and you'll parry anyone swinging at you and fill your special meter when successful. If you wanna see what high tier gameplay looks like, there's a 150 person tournament tomorrow and top 8's getting streamed on twitch
This convinced me that I want this game. I was disappointed when I saw the trailer because I was unaware of the original and was expecting it to be a Jet Set Radio type game based on by characters and style

You can still play with no hp, 1 hit kill. They just didn't turn off hp.
There also seems to be some wakeup mechanic that recovers the ball to you like at 36:54
