I have a Concept 2 Indoor Rower, 13 million metres onwards and still going strong. Not worried about aesthetics. This machine is durable and easy to maintain - takes up less space when split in half. I leave mine in place in the garage. Paid for it with interest free payments - best piece of exercise equipment I have ever purchased.
Concept 2 is the "gold standard" because it feels more like rowing a real shell than any other machine. The air resistance flywheel (while noisy) provides a far more realistic simulation of real rowing shell dynamics than water-wheel or magnetic resistance.
I've used shovels less rugged than a Concept2 rower. It is the only way to go!
July 14 2016 I weighed 325, I joined a gym in a little over 2 years got down to 126.
70% of my time was on their only rower, a concept 2.
Over 7 years later I finally bought my own Concept 2 a few weeks ago, I wanted to make sure it would work for me. LOL
By the way I'm now 72 and work full-time climbing towers and delivering and operating heavy equipment.
My blood work is amazing, and I feel good.
My gym is Owasso 180, thanks to them and Concept 2.
For what it's worth, Ergatta has just released a Concept2 Connection Kit, so you can have the polished interface of Ergatta with the bomb-proof C2 equipment. The Ergatta touchscreen mounts directly on the C2 frame and plugs into the PM5 - however, a subscription is still required to access all their content.
One other note for people looking at the various rowers: cost of ownership. I've had my Concept2 Model D for 10 years, stored in a garage through cold winters and humid summers, and closing in on 6 million meters. I've only replaced the rail and seat rollers (in May of 2024) for a total cost of $40. AND, Concept2 provides diagrams and instructions so you can replace parts and do maintenance yourself.
As a final plug for Concept2, they'll send you achievement swag (t-shirts, pins) for things like your first million meters, marathon, etc., totally free.
The Concept2 is for athletes, the rest are for athleisure.
Here's one to consider: long term value. I've had my Concept2 for 15 years. It's held up extremely well with a minimum of service. I've upgraded the monitor and you can add 3rd party apps that can give you competition visually. You can also attach a Garmin watch so you can keep your various workouts in a single data repository. After NordicTrack just recently ended support of my elliptical after just under 8 years, I'm now sitting on what's essentially a brick. I've not heard anything on how long companies like Peleton will support their products, but it's certainly something to consider.
I would never pay for a membership just to do cardio. I'm good with my music, youtube etc. I already pay for a gym membership as it is. Paying for an additional membership in addition to the rower means you never pay for it outright. That's how they get you. It's the Concept 2 for the win for me.
Thank you for your review. I originally wanted the Concept 2 and then saw and ad for the Aviron and really wanted the Aviron. However, after looking at your video I'm confident about purchasing the Concept 2.
As a another coach, I want to give you huge props on a very thorough and effective analysis of this space. Those in search of a rower can become fairly comfortable with a decision after this one video - a great use of time and a great benefit to the community. I would also recommend this to long time C2 users who have now heard about all of the recent advancements but still may be wondering, might I want to make a switch to a more connected and innovative model? I'm betting you do a deeper dice on C2 and the available 3rd party content that it can connect to, but you've done a really solid job that will and should help anyone in the market to make a decision. Nice job, and thank you!
For me, Concept2, no question. Is certainly the “Gold Standard”. No memberships, easy maintenance, decades of experience/design behind the product, designed by rowers for rowers.
Without a doubt, and they’ll last forever with the simplest of maintenance. Peloton always makes me chuckle, some folks just need the most expensive thing utility be damned.
I have to admit that I was a little bit afraid to watch this video since I had just bought a rower and did not want to discover that I had made a mistake. I was pleased to have my decision confirmed. I bought a Concept 2 rower, primarily because I did not want to have to pay for a subscription because I already have Apple Fitness because I am an Apple Watch user. It seems as if I made the right choice for me based on your video. Thanks.
yep, and you can continue to use Concept 2 for at least 20 years. I am in my 17th year and do about 10 - 12k 3 times/week.
Concept 2 is the cadillac. Best value for your money. Will last forever. No electricity or internet is required. The WOD emailed to you every morning keeping it interesting, challenges and teams, logbook and app all free! Online community and forums are a wealth of information and help. It's a no-brainer!
Olympic rowers do dry land training on the C2-that really says it all.
Not really. Most people who row on indoor rowers will never row on water. The main reason the C2 is used by water rowers is that the monitor is the gold standard used to measure ability.

Great comparison! I take in person rowing classes on the Concept 2 and it’s the best workout ever. I got the Hydrow for my sister’s family and really enjoy the intensity of their workouts when they have their Olympic medal winning cox pushing the coaches to row harder. Unfortunately those workouts are rare, but it’s fine if you stick with the coaches you like. Can’t afford to travel the world but Hydrow gives a fun virtual simulation.
I am considering getting the Aviron Strong rower for my sister’s family and moving the Hydrow to my house. I learned that while I am best motivated by coaches, her kids and husband especially would appreciate the Aviron’s content to get them moving more. So great that there’s such a wide variety of rowers that can meet people wherever they are on their fitness journey.
The reason I got the concept2 was the lack of subscription and 3rd party support. Not only do I not want to pay a membership fee, but what happens if the company of one of those rowers goes out of business. No thanks. My concept2 should last until I’m retired.
And if you want to “upgrade” to a smart Concept2 you can sell your rower for close to what you paid for it.
Except concept 2 rowers and very ugly and look outdated 😂😂😂 thanks but no thanks! At least the peloton rower looks sleek and much more high end!

I love that you considered fitment for women. As a gym rat, I’m very particular about equipment ergonomics. Many things are made for a man’s frame and are not easily adjusted to allow proper movement mechanics for women. Thanks so much for your thorough video!
I'm eyeing the Aviron because me and my family have a really tough time staying engaged as all these working videos have always been extremely boring. The gamification and actual games on Aviron's membership is actually very attractive.
Fantastic review! While Concept 2 is by far the best option for me personally (as an athlete and coach) for the reasons you gave, I loved the breakdown across the board. Especially adaptability - that’s a category that I think is overlooked a lot by equipment reviewers who assume everyone is as fully capable as themselves!
I do think a couple sections were left out though, where Concept 2 would have come out ahead: longevity/serviceability and user community.
Admittedly we don’t know for certain how long most of these will last since they’re new, but with all the tech involved I think it’s safe to say they won’t be nearly as bulletproof as the Concept 2. Plus you can order literally every part of the rower from Concept 2 and replace it yourself if something fails.
On the community front, with all the high level rowers, crossfitters, collegiate athletes, etc that are committed to Concept 2, you won’t be able to find a more expansive and knowledgeable community. There’s Facebook groups, Reddit groups, the Concept 2 forums, and others which are all responsive and supportive to anyone with questions and sharing their experiences.
I’m not certain which category it would fall under but the Concept2 online logbook should also be mentioned. Another free piece of support from the company that not only lets you track workouts and progress, but connect and compare results with others, offers a large number of annual challenges, and gives physical rewards for long term victories - I recently received my free 10 million meter sweatshirt!
Thanks and yes proven longevity is definitely a big benefit for the concept 2… I’m still using c2 rowers (not shown in this video) that are well over 20 years old back when they had a metal fan cover!
On the community front, honestly all these rowers have a pretty sizable and helpful membership base, each with very active facebook groups and/or Reddits, which is great since whereas in the past most people were introduced to rowing in a CrossFit class (and so received at least some hands on instruction) whereas now the majority of rowers are being sold to people who never rowed before and will definitely need help.
And thanks for letting me know about the concept 2 app, I knew you could use it to track and log workouts, but wasn’t aware they gave rewards which is pretty nice. Congrats on 10 million meters!
I'm looking at buying a rower because of arthritis in my lower 3 vertebrae. I've used rowers in fitness centers and they seem to offer the lowest impact on my lower back, while helping strengthen my core, which ultimately takes more pressure off those pesky vertebrae during normal activity. Outstanding reviews of all these, but for me it sounds like the C2 is the way to go. Before we know it, our entire life will be a freaking subscription! I'm just not ready to shell out $2 or $3 grand and then pay a subscription on top of that. Besides, the C2 is getting props in the comments from serious rowers and, ultimately, that's what I'm looking for - a machine to help me be fitter. And with 3rd party integration, it sounds like I can use my wife's iPad if I want the bells and whistles. Otherwise, I'll stick a TV in front of me and just row... I mean, that's the point, right? 🤔

Concept 2 is the way to go. Less technology means less headaches.
They last a long time, broken parts are easily sourced, community is huge, and you can one that's used at a fair price.
Some cry about the noise but, if you live in an area where noise is an issue then you probably shouldn't get a row machine.
I bought my Concept 2 second hand.. in 2005 !! I'm more than 20 million metres in now and, although I've tried some other machines you've reviewed at gyms and friends, I'd never change. One extra thing you didn't cover regarding the Concept 2. User Serviceability. I have upgraded the monitor, swapped the bungie return chord and replaced the chain all myself. The schematics are all on the concept 2 web site and every part of the rower can be bought individually. Lastly, should you wish to attend an indoor rowing competition ... in the USA, UK, EUROPE, what are you going to be sat on ? Concept 2 pretty much all the way :-)
I’m really enjoying my Hydro Wave and all the great content. I love the classes and instructors (though they could use a fun Cody Rigsby personality). Mine makes an annoying whining sound, but their support is great and they arranged to have a local fitness equipment repair company to out next week to fix it.

Wow, this is a great comparison of rowers on the high end of the spectrum, most of which require some form of monthly membership. I unfortunately am cheap ... but indoor rowing is my main workout. I would really love to see a similar comparison only for mid-tier rowers which do not require a membership, but still offer some tech abilities, such as connecting to a smart phone or pad. Rowers similar to the Concept 2, but include water and magnetic resistance models. Additionally, I would be interested in having their draw resistance "adjustability", both how easy it can be changed and easy-difficult range be included in the comparisons. Last item might be the height differences between the seat the foot pedestals. It seems like there is quite a range looking at these rowers (maybe it's my eyes) ... I would thing the concept 2 is the gold standard.
Former college rower. I consider the c2 the best of the bunch. I bought my first and only c2 rower used from my college team over a decade ago with 10 million meters on it. I've added another 10 million meters using it off and on over the years with minimal upkeep. The thing will last you forever.
One point in favor of the water rower that I didn't hear mentioned, perhaps because it's no longer an option, but you can rent them on a monthly basis. Something to consider if you don't want to make the financial commitment.

I tried the peloton and went with concept 2 because of multiple reasons but man the price difference is nuts.
I don't know how any justifies the Peloton unless they are planning to keep a membership to the day they die. The machine loses almost all functionality without it.
I recently subscribed to Apple Fitness+, and thought getting a rower for my bedroom might be nice. I've enjoyed rowers at the gym, and figure I can start with Apple Fitness and try other videos through my 55" TV with Apple TV. So I've just ordered the Concept 2 for its no frills durability (and I can fold it to a relatively small area in my bedroom).
I don't quite get why you have not considered the Waterrower and their fantastic rowing machines. I personally own an A1, the most basic and affordable one, and still pretty happy with it. It gets the job done and overall a great rowing machine, sure it has no connectivity and flashy tech, but that's definitely not why I bought it for in the first place.

Great review/comparison of the different rowers and features. We already have the Peloton bike and Tread so it would make sense to stick to the brand. HOWEVER $3,100 before taxes is a bitter pill to swallow.
I am an on water rower. So when it comes to being competitive you are right that concept2 is the only option. When people refer to it as the gold standard they are referring to the results that you get from a concept two. If you are looking to race in something like the crash b’s in Boston or other recognized erg races. The concept two is the only machine you can use. Any other machine will give skewed results and won’t be considered legitimate in the eyes of the rowing community. So if you are looking to compare your splits the concept two is really the only way to go.
I have never ever considered rowing until some of the commercials appeared on my FB page….so i did my research. I watched plenty of videos….i recently came back from a great cruise and i was able to try the concept 2 every day! It was a great experience ! i will be buying the CITYROW classic rower by waterrower…. I like the style and the compactness…..and of course the soothing sounds. I don’t need a big monitor…as I already have a nice iPod pro that can be adapted to the rower. I also have a peloton bike….i already have a subscription so i can stream their programming to the rower. To be honest, i didn’t know there was so much content on peloton that i am able to use…. I can use it for my treadmill that i bought a few years ago…. Your review was very revealing and i learned a lot……perhaps i will try the hydro ap later on….its always an option!!! Keep seeing rower reviews. Some of the newer models have a
more interactive experience but at significant cost and often an additional subscription. Unless noise is an issue just buy the best which is a concept 2. It has erg data, used by professionals, bullet proof, spares galore, proven track record. Have been using them for over 20 years. Not only the best rower but the best aerobic pie e of exercise you can buy. All this at a reasonable price.

I chose the concept 2. I've been using it for five months and have already rowed a million meters. What I really like: the Concept 2 is easy to maintain and clean. And thanks to Bluetooth and a tablet holder (now included with the purchase!) I can train with programs such as EXR, COZWEAT or Kinomap. Or easily design my own training with the ERG-DATA App from Concept 2. The tablet holder is also great for watching films or series on the tablet. The Concept 2 Row ERG isn't too loud either. It is well thought out and made robust and solid. And above all a good investment: very stable in value.
for ease of use, the C2 can't be beat. I'm currently traveling cross country in a travel trailer and the fact that the C2 is SIMPLE, breaks in 2, and doesn't need any electricity or wifi to use, and is a lighter option means I'm easily able to travel with it and store it relatively out of the way in our small trailer. I also know that i can quickly and easily do repairs on my C2 while on the road.
Also, as an on-water rower, the C2 has the best design for body mechanics. What I mean by this is the foot stretcher height, angle, seat height, etc. I don't think that any of the other machines except maybe the Aviron (which I haven't used) have a good layout for rowing mechanics.
I will also add, rowing workouts (like workouts on-water rowers and competitive rowers use to improve specific times/races) are not what are offered in the membership rowers' workout options. My biggest issue with the fancier rowers is that the classes, which is really all you can do, are for general fitness. They are not actually rowing specific. My coach designs my workouts and pushes them to me via ErgZone, which then syncs to my PM5 AND my coach can see all my results right away. Easy peasey.
Concept 2 can't be beaten. You haven't really mentioned the C2 community. Thousands of people across the world competing and sharing rows/encouragement. Plus actual and virtual events to put your skills against others. Don't forget the online clubs and monthly/regular competitions to maintain your involvement. The C2 may not be pretty or the quietest, but it's almost bombproof! I train primary school children on 8 machines ranging in age from 2006 to 2021 and all work perfectly. Maintenance is simple, they are tough and if a repair is needed, C2 can always supply the part cheaply with advice so that anyone can do the repair themselves.
These new machines look lovely, but they don't compare for a serious rower. The only change I would make to a concept 2 would be to make it slightly quieter (but this isn't a deal breaker - you're exercising not bird watching!), The screen could also be a little more modern - however, I wouldn't want to trade the PM5 for something less robust or more costly to replace (only £145 at the moment!). I'm sure C2 will come up with a PM6 at some stage and as these machines are so good you'll simply be able to bolt it to your old rower for an upgrade!
Other rowers just don't have these advantages, so don't waste your money!
@@johnpritchard7404 the C2 community is amazing but i actually don’t take too much of a part in it because i prefer on water activities, which is why I forgot to mention it. I think the physical attributes of the machine farrrr outweigh the community benefits (for me at least!)
I found a floor model NordicTrack RW600 for $270 and snatched it up. I had never tried any rower before. I wanted to see if I even liked rowing before going nuts, and I wasn’t sure how rowing should feel - it was much harder than I expected, and based on your review, I thought I might have made a mistake getting a NordicTrack. However, I went to the Peleton store and tried out a Row yesterday for a 30 minute workout, and the difference is not much in terms of its feel to my inexperienced body. I use a Quest 3 VR program for immersive gamified rowing by Holodia which I am really liking, especially because the cost is negligible compared to $40/mo subscriptions (I purchased the VR subscription for $80ish for 2 years) and I can also use Holofit with my elliptical (which I liked so much that I bought a rower to use with it).

In my company I have like 5 C2. Difrent distances done and all of them and they are used ones. All of them ar stil in perfect shape. Indestructible machine. I recommend c2.

My heart transplant hospital suggested a rowing machine to help my recovery! They're all so expensive and there's so many options. I'm actually thinking for me the Aviron may be the best as it seems to be the best entry-level one. But, the Peloton Row's form training feature is pretty cool.

C2 are the best rowings.
Earlier this year I finally was able to afford really any of these options. I do have peloton bike, and decided to wait and see what they released. Prior to their release I was either gonna get a concept 2 or a aviron. Here I continue to wait bc I simply just so t know which to buy 😩
Go fore C2 if you dont like them you will easy sell them. Believe me.
This is an excellent review - thanks! I hate the subscription model, but want something much quieter than a C2. I think I'd look at the entry-level Waterrower oak with the S4 module that lets you create workouts like the C2. Then I'd add the optional arm holder and put my ipad on it for netflix/streaming/whatever. Should be all-in for under $1500 and have a quiet water rower
Thank you for this presentation. I recently bought a rower to be placed in my smallish home office. After a fair amount of research, I chose a $500 wooden water rower. I wanted to pay more but not as much as what you presented. It came down to air v water. I like the feel of a water rower. After the fact I found a Concept 2 rower at a local gym and I tried it out. The C2 is OK, but now, I like my little water rower even more. Thanks Again. 🌻

@@SherinMakhyoun At the time I was shopping for a rowing machines I did not see the Merach. In response to your question I took a look at the $600 wood modal. I bought a Topiom, which at the time was two hundred dollars less. I will say that having the seat at ground level is difficult for an older person. Also, the Merach seat looks to be more comfortable. Regardless, I love rowing MacInnes.

I have to disagree on the non membership part. Waterrower Which makes the Ergatta can connect to SmartRow app, Zwift and many other third parties apps can be used without subscription and will store metrics and your custom workouts
Great review...Been looking at the C2 or the Echelon row...not interested in apps...I have my iPad for that...prob gonna go with a new C2...wish they had sales!:)
Not mentioned is the ability to do repairs/maintenance yourself on the Concept2. Parts are priced very reasonably as well. This and the PM5 being open to 3rd party developers made it my #1 choice and I have been super pleased with it.
My plan was Concept 2 (even here cost around 1300 euro) so thank You for confirming my choice :)
Awesome review - You can further pair off these rowers into 3 dueling categories:
(1) Hydrow vs Peloton (high/luxury priced, video-coached)
(2) Ergatta vs Aviron, (medium priced, gamified)
(3) Concept2 vs WaterRower (accessibly priced, functional rowing only)
With (1) & (2) being closed systems - you go all in on their offering only, while (3) are open systems supporting 3rd party apps that offer complimentary coaching & gamification similar to (1) & (2).
Would love to see some of the higher priced luxury rowers offer 3rd party support for other apps/programs. I think it'll happen at some point (as it has for all other forms of the media devices, like Smart TVs and Video Game Consoles), but it may take a while...

I’ve been a Peloton member since March of 2021 and own the bike and tread. Love the equipment and content. I bought the row the other day and will have it delivered tomorrow. Looking forward to it being a part of my home gym.
I do agree that the price is a bit high in comparison, but for the quality and content, you’re paying for luxury… that’s not a bad thing. Can’t wait to try out my row and incorporate it into my daily routine!
Just wasted your money. The Concept 2 is simply the best and definitely the best value. It's used by serious rowers Olympic teams for good reason.
@@johngoodchild6949 How do you know that I wasted my money? My brother has the Concept 2, I wasn't interested in it. Getting something I am not interested in would be a waste of money. Maybe to you, the Peloton Row is a waste, good on you for that.

@MrKHafid one machine is a true rower the other is a multimedia gimmick. You obviously have too much money. Concept 2 is run by true rowing enthusiasts with honest pricing and the absolute best aerobic machine. Peleton £3000 plus and £50 per month subscription is run by people just after your money. I'd be interested to know how reliable it is long term and its cost to maintain. Its your choice I prefer good honest companies that do things not purely for money.

I’m not a rowing enthusiast by any means, but I certainly enjoy my rower by Peloton. Good on those who buy the Concept 2, I would not consider it, but you will also not see me telling Concept 2 owners that they wasted money or should spend more money to get something else.
Lol serious Olympic teams also have coaches... Considering the price of a coach, and the convenience it is not such a terrible deal. Concept 2 plus personal trainers will cost more.
It is expensive, and I hope Peloton lowers the price but I have been using the bike for 3 years and I am about to pull the trigger myself. I got half an hour in the morning sometimes, and I want an effective workout.
I LOVE MY C2! Even though it's made in the USA I would compare it to a reliable high end Toyota or low end Lexus. I currently live in an apt. I can move my C2 very easily from my balcony to my living room.
Also, all rowing teams included the US Olympics train on the C2!

You don't have to pay an additional member membership cost to the Peloton but they also did increase the membership 5 dollars a month to everyone so I wouldn't call that a plus. You said that they will offer a limited number of classes to offer rowing workouts and my guess is that it will cost extra to peloton digital users or revamp the digital app so it's more than 13 a month, which imo is a great value. I would've never given Peloton a chance when it was 20 and I'll probably never go back to them again if/when it does go up with apple fitness plus at i believe 80 dollars a year.
How about the resistance factor. Didn’t hear you mention it at all
This was extremely helpful. I’m an older, female user so I don’t necessarily need to worry about big goals and competitiveness. I just want a good comfortable rower. For the money you pay on a monthly subscription, I can buy a cheap, smart TV stream shows, while I which is perfectly fine with me.

The Xebex Air Rower 4.0 looks like a a really high quality FTMS bluetooth rower ...but surprisingly few reviews of it...and none with EXR or Kinomap etc
It would have been nice to see warranty info and cost of parts included in the comparison. If the screen breaks on one of these expensive rowers, is it replaceable, and how much will it cost... can you even get replacement parts? The PM5 on the Concept 2 costs only $160 and if they release an upgraded PM6, I would expect it to work on their existing "old" rowers. Having to pay for a subscription to use all of the high tech rowers functionality is a big no-go for me. What happens to your rower if Peloton decides to kill their support for your hardware or if they go bankrupt?
I’m attracted to the Ergatta for both the style of the machine as a whole as well as the programs it offers. But I also would like more of the gaming apps that the Aviron rowers offer. Plus I really like the adjustability of the Aviron Strong has to offer. 😭 why can’t I just mix and match?!😭

not 100% sure as I don't like to adjust the damper much outside of initial testing... they all (besides NordicTrack) can be adjusted to provide a heavy damper for those that prefer it. Aviron might be the strongest of the bunch though, as I do remember doing programs that use the handle for strength work.
all these rowers are great but where will they be in 10 years from now? Every part in the C2 can be replaced by the owner and so it can last for as long as they make parts for it. Not sure i would place any trust in the others still being around based on how Peloton seem to be going down the tube

Although you do not like the NordicTrack rowers one thing I like is the digital resistance which allows trainers to program in changes it during workouts. This might not be the same as real rowing(although current and wind changes do change resistance). I find these changes make a workout more interesting and valuable just like incline adjustments on a treadmill. Your review should note which rowers have this ability. Appreciate the review.

no Peloton has made it pretty clear that they intend to keep Rowing content locked to only the Peloton Row. They said they will open up a handful of trial classes on the Peloton app at some point in the future.
Can you at least use the screen to view movies on the Aviron if you don't have a membership? I like the Ergatta the most but really don't need to membership either so how stripped down is the screen without the membership on that one?
sorry for the necro comment, but I have narrowed my choice down to the Ergatta. My only concern was the one you mentioned, the low seat. They have a kit to raise the seat now. Any chance you have tried that kit so I know how well it corrects the issues? either way I am going with the Ergatta, and will likely order the high seat. Too many other factors just make it the right machine for me.
P.S. They also have upgraded foot bands. I wonder if those would correct your complaints there.

Nope. So far the only open system like that is on the Concept 2. Although… you can buy the water erg that ergatta works with and hook that up to your own tablet, but not sure it would be worth the effort over just choosing the rower that best fits what you’d like most
Reliability and spare parts at reasonable prices should really have been a category and the Concept 2 is likely to win that hands down. It's renowned for surviving decades even in a gym where users might abuse it and no one services it.
So my vote too goes to the Concept 2 although of course I doubt any of us have tried out all the rowers in this video.
I have a Coffey SimulatOar. I bought it with a Concept2 PM5. I'm addicted to the feel of on-the-water rowing, and the two independent handles provide a great feeling in the back when connecting at the catch. Also the wrist angle at the release is a lot more comfortable than a rower with a single handle. When used as a dynamic rower with rollers, it's easy to increase the stroke rate to get more breaths per minute. The springs on the roller are really nice too, since they provide nice cushioning for the back at the release. But it would do pretty poorly on the rating system of this video, since it is ugly, big, and loud. For beautiful, sleek and quiet I have my boat.
I have never tried a Coffey Machine and would like to try one but I have had others try out the Biorower and said it was the most realistic to rowing on the water with sculling or sweep options, feathering the oars and an instability mechanism on the high end S1 Pro model. If your interested in demoing a model let me know I am in Northern Va. I think the Biorower would rate the highest in most categories except the price
@@richdigiovanna4127 I'm in California unfortunately. I haven't rowd a Biorower yet. Besides the price, another concern I had is the weight. The Coffey is much heavier than other rowers, but it is still manageable. The shipping weight on the S1Pro is 440 lbs! That would be a big hassle if I start traveling. You can also see in the videos that the person's body goes back and forth like a static rower because of the inertia. One downside of the Coffey is the pull feels a bit rough, because of the chains or something.
Will there be a 2024 update? I keep seeing adds for an echelon? Is that worth considering?
There’s two new rowers out/coming out early this year that are really great and reviews are on their way hopefully in January. Not sure about Echelon but I haven’t heard great things

The C2 is cheap, durable, performance focused and non-subscription based so that you can buy dozens of them for your college rowing team and use them twice a day every day in training and competitions for 15 years without a replacement. You can also buy one for yourself and not have to worry about the company going out of business and switching off your rowing machine.
I feel like many people already have a tablet and some wireless headphones. You can buy a tablet holder for your concept2 for a few bucks and suddenly it matches or beats most of these rower's digital offerings for free or a much smaller membership (for some of the third party apps). Given the much higher up-front and ongoing costs (and the rower being mostly useless when the manufacturer ends support), I can't really see any reason to buy something other than Concept2 unless you absolutely need a quiet machine.

Separating out the specific parts and tools for each of the seven step assembly process steps was brilliant on the part of the manufacturer. Well, I was puzzled at first at Step 5 and maybe the instructions should mention that rail #62 needs to be tilted upwards a little to get the rail to fit into the main part #44. I like it that the rower can be stored vertically in a really small amount of space, but be forewarned that this rower is top heavy and for safety you'll need at least two bungee cords to keep the unit upright, attaching them to something; in my case to a third garage door. I have had this unit only a short time, and I will post an update once I've had it for a year. As for working your legs, I have to admit that I'm mainly rowing for upper body strength and I use other forms of exercise for leg strength (like walking fast, biking, or using a trampoline. But if you pull as far forward as possible, then you can give preference to your legs for the first 4 feet or so of travel. I also admit to not taking the two electronic connectors apart at Step 7. I simply inserted the two batteries while the other parts remained connected. By the way, there is plenty of resistance here, even in the lowest resistance settings. Kudos to Sunny Health & Fitness !

The best ....
Note that there’s two ways to get Ergatta. One is to buy the full Ergatta. The other is to buy a normal WaterRower and get the Ergatta upgrade. This allows a few things. One, a WaterRower can get the HiRise adapter to make the unit higher, addressing one of the concerns you mention. Second, this configuration gives you the S4 monitor, with a wired connection to the Ergatta display. If you unsubscribe to Ergatta, you could remove the Ergatta display and still have a normal WaterRower. You could add on the SmartRow upgrade to record sessions with no subscription costs.
If you know how to DIY, the Ergatta or any cheap wooden rower is a no brainer. The modifications and reinforcements I made on mine has made me not want to use the rowers at my gym.
While Hydrow has the most classes, it doesn't have the range of classes as Aviron. As a couple, Aviron works best for us since my husband and I like different styles of workouts.
Just buy a concept 2 attach an ipad and use a 3rd party app

Thanks for the indepth and detailed review. I have both Peloton units and wanted to order this to just in the family with no other membership ... but their price point is so high. I doubt they will drop the price before next summer as not to upset the early adopters so I guess I'll be waiting 'patiently'

I agree… we have both bike and tread and use both daily. I was so excited for the rower release, but the price point and no financing are a huge deterrent for us. Hoping the pricing cools off in the new year, fingers crossed!
On the Nordic Trac rower- RUN AWAY!!! We have a RW900 and it’s junk, has never worked from day 1. I thought it was just me not being strong enough, but then we realized that there is no tension adjustment- it’s on all the time. No way to lesson the tension. Despite Nordic Trac sending out 4 repair visits, and those repairman saying it’s wrong and not fixable, they say it’s fine. They’ve been told to say, “nothing is un fixable”… or they get fired. They lie, and say we still haven’t gotten the notes from the repairman… our engineers are looking into it… No they’re not. After a year now they say, “it’s fine, everything is working as it should”… Meaning we have your money, we don’t stand behind the things we sell, we already know it’s not working right, but we’re not going to lose money on it….

Some good alternative options if you don't need the large screen and apps are First Degree Fitness and Pro 6 Rowers. The Pro 6 Rower is the exact same as Aviron and the FDF Rowers have adjustable resistance, which the Water Rowers don't offer.

As mentioned in the review, WaterRower, Concept2, Hydrow, and Peloton all naturally create more resistance by pulling harder. Changing the water level only affects the initial drag factor, i.e. the type of boat you’re simulating. Neither water level nor damper setting on a C2 is meant as adjustable resistance. It is not like a spin cycle.
Concept 2 for durability and lack of a subscription.
Nicely done! To improve the comparison, I would suggest you split this between native, non-connected rowing machines (e.g. Concept 2, WaterRower, Technogym) and fully connected models (Hydrow, Aviron, Ergatta, Echelon) otherwise it’s apples to oranges. Why? Because some are built for mechanics only and some for digital motivation while borrowing original mechanical designs from other brands. For example, Ergatta & CityRow use WaterRower machines and benefit from their aesthetics and mechanics, and Aviron’s base unit is very similar to Bodycraft’s VR500 series (common manufacturer) while Hydrow, Peloton & Nordictrack are original machine designs. Small things matter, though, so those who have innovated on top of original mechanical designs (e.g. Aviron adjustable footpads) are critically important for healthy use of these machines because most of these have fixed ergonomic features. Since entertainment and motivation is a personal preference, judging one’s video content vs games is again apples to oranges. What’s also missed here are the numerous 3rd party apps that offer similar entertainment and connected experiences for non-connected rowers to elevate them into the same category yet offer more flexibility (use your own device) and competitive or even lower monthly subscriptions fees.
So funny how much taste can differ… the Ergatta for me is by far the most unattractive looking rower. 😂 Peloton and Hydrow look just absolutely stunning, but since Hydrow is not available where I live and I already have a Peloton membership, it’s the Peloton Row for me. I really hope that when the time comes and Peloton releases the Row in Germany, that the price will go down. In fact it has been the exact opposite for the Tread. The price has gone up from 2.495€ to 3.795€ since it has been released in september 21. So glad I bought it right on release date.
The Concept 2 fanboys are strong on these reviews. Not knocking the C2 but let people decide for themselves which brand they want to purchase.
Others' reviews is the first thing I look at when buying a product, rather than the bumph. The fact that the Concept 2 is preferred by so many rowers surely says it all. I've had access to three rowers myself, the Concept 2, Matrix and the Technogym rower, which was surprisingly good. But I'd only ever buy the Concept 2. Half the others in the review will be out of business in a few years and you won't even be able to get spare parts for them.
