Sibelius’s music is so haunting and so northern sounding

This suite really holds your attention with innumerable touches / variations of color, compelling our continued interest and attention. He builds a painting one brush stroke at a time .

Wonderful interpretation even if it sometimes is a little bit fast. But not too fast. In the first movement for example, the tempo sometimes is accelerated more than usual, but I think this gives a new approach to this music! Lemminkäinen in Tuonela is played with the right imposing force, and The Swan in Tuonela is of course beautiful with this English Horn. Lemminkäinens return home goes like a fast horserace! Thank you Sinfonia Lahti and Dima Slobodeniouk for making this so enjoyable!

I agree. This is a very connected four-movement symphonic poem of unparalleled merit. Each movement is related and leads to the next in the musical telling of the great Legend. This is very serious music which requires the listener to participate attentively to fully share in its emotional impact. It's for grown-ups but I fell in love with it when I was 17.

A wonderful piece! Yes, a symphony, as Sibelius acknowledged in the 1950’s. A great performance, but the listed movements and timings are wrong. They are:
    I. Lemminkäinen and the Island Maidens-0:02
    II. Lemminkäinen in Tuonela-16:05
    III. The Swan of Tuonela-31:05
    IV. Lemminkäinen’s Return-39:25

The Movs II and III can be played in either order, Sibelius only changed them for the last time in the 1947 publication, but the timings were wrong.

@@Itapirkanmaa2 As with Mahler 6, the composer had doubts about the narrative and key sequence issues. Only the length of LP sides favoured The Swan coming second !
I prefer it in this order. And so does Esa-Pekka, and the incomparable Leif Segerstam..

"Suite" is somewhat of a misnomer. A suite implies a collection of lighter, shorter pieces often based on dance forms, none of which these 4 pieces are. It's really a symphony, the famous Swan of Tuonela being the slow movement.

Symphonies were based on dance pieces too, at least in the 18th century, which invented them. Think of the minuets in Haydn's and Mozart's symphonies!
