    and yet people still tell lies about how a VPN can make you "anonymous" and "disappear" on the internet
    and people still get confused as to "why am i seeing these weirdly specific ads after I've logged in to this website? I'm using a VPN!"

      NordVPN uses AES 256-bit encryption algorithm to hide your data, which is the most secure encryption available. It's so secure that it's even used by some government agencies to hide top-secret files.

    • @LeetKrew090

      @@youtubeking2686 You can't really 'hide' files with a VPN, it's just to send data back and forth.
      If you wanna keep your Files hidden outside of a Govs reach, search for VeraCrypt or Tresorit, which is cloud based.

      I'd like to share my own review (don't take it seriously tho, I'm not a pro/reviewer. I'm just a regular user)
      I've compared it with LastPass and I find Bitwarden is way better as:
      1. the Free is indeed totally free, just as they mentioned on their website.
      2. the Free is not intrusive like LastPass's free does.
      3. open source and cross-platform
      4. the Free does sync to all of your devices
      5. the mobile app does able to do auto-fill
      I tried LastPass but their free is so intrusive and it's like they really want me to upgrade to their Pro subscription and so I ended up just get away from it (oh and also, LastPass can't import from Firefox CSV format. I tried to import from Firefox to LastPass but LastPass failed to read all the urls. the passwords are definitely there but I can't use it on any sites)
      with Bitwarden, I think they need to do better with their auto-fill function as sometimes, I need to manually copy my credentials into the forms (but it's not that time consuming. I can just right click and there's an option to open the Vault)

    • @jonumand
      @jonumand 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shiro3940 I also find Bitwarden way better, easier to use (except when Bitwarden decides not to auto-fill :D)
      Another positive for Bitwarden, is, it's possible to self-host if you want to.

      Definitely not worth it. Take it from someone who’s lived in a third world country. Connection speed and latency will be the major problems.
      GC says “depends on what you do online” but if you’re doing something that really makes you worried about your safety, commercial VPNs shouldn’t even be on the list of your options, read this gist.github.com/joepie91/5a9909939e6ce7d09e29
      No one gives a f**k about what you do online in a third world country, or at least up to the point where the police doesn’t get involved. In my case, torrenting was what I did most of the times. In my 10+ years of torrenting, through a public tracker mind you, never had any problems.

    I have a couple of questions:
    1. Despite NordVPN being registered in Panama, they obviously have servers in many countries, surely they have to abide by the individual countries rules regarding logging etc. If they didn't then there is a big hole in government IT security policies, so do NordVPN have to log traffic as per the particular country their server(s) are located in??
    2. When you did the Wireshark testing/demo did you happen to notice what the increase in the total amount of traffic generated by your browsing using VPN was as oppposed to browsing without VPN running. Just interested in just how much of an increase it made as more traffic means more latency, though I doubt if you would notice it to much given your 500mbs connection.
    Thanks for a excellent video.

  • @theirisheditor
    @theirisheditor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In my case I use a VPN to get around severe traffic shaping with my ISP, i.e. 2-10Mbps at times vs 50+Mbps typical with the VPN. The difference doesn't show up on Ookla speed tests (which I suspect the ISP fiddles with), but certainly makes a massive difference with file downloads, FTP transfers, etc.

    How secure is Nordlynx protocol compared to OpenVpn?

    • @christophertstone
      @christophertstone 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NordLynx is actually using the WireGuard Protocol, it's documented here: www.wireguard.com/papers/wireguard.pdf
      I haven't reviewed it, so I can't really comment on it's security. But it definitely suffers from "standards proliferation"...
      The author seems to think that IPSec was too complicated, so WireGuard is theoretically a simpler version.
      There's very few cryptanalysis papers on it. I wouldn't use or recommend it for anything that needs to stay private yet.

      It's just a phrase.

      I was using Express VPN as well, until I discovered that on Mac they auto run a background daemon that restarts when terminated and when asked the company would not give any specific answers on what it does, it just says it helps the software to run. And if you delete that daemon Express VPN will not start up. I tried many other VPNs and Express VPN is the only one that does it on Mac. I wouldn't trust them anymore TBH.

    Their KillSwitch feature can be a bit of a hassle if you don't always want to stay connected to the VPN. Especially if you'd prefer to boot without the VPN active, as you would have to enter the NordVPN interface and turn off the KillSwitch. If you just boot without automatically loggin into the VPN, you'll end up without any internet connection at all until you fiddle with it.

    "If there's a website that transfers login data that is not using SSL, stop using that site"
    Well, that site is my university's site, so... How does one protect it's data if in this situation?

    Even if NordVPN had the best encryption out of all existing VPN providers I wouldn't pay them a dime, and the reason for this is their disgusting marketing that uses fake discounts to bait people into thinking that if they don't purchase right now or within the next 9 hours, they'll miss on the "limited time 70% off discount".
    Yes, it's so "limited-time" that it never ends and uses a countdown that works with cookies stored on your device that resets itself after 9 hours have passed.
    Beyond that, they aren't even secure, and it's likely that you'll find your own NordVPN account besides millions of other accounts compromised sooner or later and used by multiple people that got their hands on your login credentials at once as NordVPN doesn't seem to offer any sort of protection against that.

    As someone who has been using vpns ever since the first ones came out, I can say that NordVPN was probably the best performing one so far.

    A little confused at the point? You just told the audience to use secure sites and not to worry. Then tell us don't use them because they are open to anyone to look at? Pretty sure that is contradictory and incorrect. The entire point of a secure page is that nobody has the ability to look at what you are doing unless they hack your line and that is illegal anyway in most countries.
