  • A mini-tutorial on how to farm Encoded Materials in the sci-fi space flight sim game, Elite:Dangerous.
Officially called "Encoded Materials" in the game, these are downloadable data packets primarily used in engineering one's ship.
Famous Commander Jameson's Cobra MK III crash landed on Planet HIP 12099 1 B. Scattered around the wreckage site are 3 Comms Control Beacons. Scanning them will download Commander Jameson's final logs.
You will also gain a variety of Encoded Materials, some of which are very rare Grade 5 varieties. These can be used in engineering your ship as well as traded at a Material Trader for other Encoded Materials. Refer to this page for more details on materials and their exchange tables when trading:

This farming spot is repeatable; simply log off to the Main Menu and back in again to reset the Comms Control Beacons. Happy farming!

    Oh dear... this is sad.
Especially since you already showed how to scan data links directly from your ship, without an SRV.
You don't need to use an SRV to farm the Jameson Crash Site. Just hover your ship about 10-15 metres above the spot you parked the SRV, and use the ship's data link scanner to scan the comms controls, rotating/pivoting the ship as needed. A small ship makes this easier. I keep a custom-built stripped-down and engineered Sidewinder permanently garaged at Ray Gateway in the Diaguandri system (which is home to the nearest encoded mats trader), so it's always ready to go if I need to farm some more.
(Also, there are FOUR comms controls at the site.. not three. You panned right past the fourth one in the mid-distance at the 3:13 mark!)
