This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) is easily my favorite song of theirs, and they did do it in this concert. It was never a big hit, but over the years has been recorded by many different artists and groups. It's a slower song, and it has a much deeper meaning.
They were all in art school together and played in NY on the weekends...This concert movie is their best... start from the beginning because each song builds on the one before. Psycho Killer is first, Heaven is second, etc. Worth it to watch in order. And I have seen them in concert - in 1979 they came to Atlanta to the Agora Ballroom... held about 300 people and the stage was only 4' high. They played for 3 hours, and their warmup band was Kid Creole & the Coconuts. About 1/2 way through everybody cleared out the folding chairs and we all just danced. Biggest party I've ever been to!
This was a massive hit for them and really the whole album is great, but I do generally like their earlier stuff, including Life During Wartime, which you reacted to, but the studio cuts for the Talking Heads are just mind-blowing. Check out the studio cut and music video to their groundbreaking hit Once in a Lifetime, from their incredible album Remain In Light.
From Google - Talking Heads is known for their avant-garde style and for pioneering new wave music by combining elements of punk, art rock, funk, and world music. Their music is often described as artsy, experimental, and funky, with a blend of minimalism and polyrhythmic world beats that convey the anxiety and strangeness of modern times. Byrne's anxious lyrics, twitchy stage persona, and squawky singing also contributed to the band's sound.
Music is totally subjective. If it's not your thing then it's just not your thing. I was lucky enough to catch this tour in 1983, and as often happens after seeing a band live, I had a deeper appreciation and became a total fan. To me they're absolutely one of the top bands operating in the 1980's, live and on their studio albums. For this Live tour, from which the concert film "Stop Making Sense" was from, the 4 core members were joined by the two singers, Ednah Holt and Lynn Mabry, a percussionist, Steve Scales, Alex Weir from The Brothers Johnson on guitar, and the legend, Bernie Worrell, RIP, a major force in Parliament-Funkadelic, on keyboards.
The lead singer went to a hip-hop concert and kept on hearing "burning down the house" and the rest is history..I got out of the Navy in 1988 and drove from San Diego to Seattle with two cassettes and one was the talking heads..what a trip it was.
studio version is somewhat different in vocal presentations, giving it a more structured rhythm. but remember- it's the talking heads! they're, how can I say this, a little.....off? like a clock with the big hand ticking sideways!
Happy to hear some Heads. They're a fun band, upbeat, even if they're burning down the house or talking about a psycho killer. This was a huge hit. Strange that it's not hitting for you. No idea why not. Maybe it will grow on you. Also, cool that you're doing another performance from the "Stop Making Sense" concert film. Go ahead and hit up everything from that concert. "Slippery People," etc.
You’re not the first reactor I’ve seen that doesn’t vibe to this track (live or original album version). I’ve always liked the song, I think it was one of their bigger charting hits, it came out when I was really little. That’s why I like reaction channels and appreciate your honesty, it’s fascinating and fun to think about what clicks and what doesn’t for everyone out there. 🍻 Keep up the great job!
Definitely the best concert movie ever filmed! Seeing "Stop Making Sense," on the big screen, at concert level volume, was just like being there. And cmon Ace, you appeared to be having fun reacting to the performance, but you're being overly critical afterward. I'll admit most people need to hear their songs over and over to get used to the overall quirkiness of it all. But that's a performance art experience. Have fun!❤
The unusual electronic sounds are the work of Bernie Worrell (The Wizard of Woo) who was also responsible for much of Parliament/Funkadelic’s sound. R.I.P. Bernie 😔🙏🏾 ( He’s the one in the white sleeveless shirt up on the platform 😇)
Watch Stop Making Sense in chronological order so you see the buildup. David Byrne starts alone with his acoustic guitar and a boombox, and then another musician joins him on each subsequent song, and instruments get moved in. It is all high energy. I was so-so on the Talking Heads but this concert made me a fan.
The “dub step” sound is just a synthesizer. It’s a pretty easy sound to create. I have several synthesizers and can recreate every sound you’re hearing that isn’t a natural instrument.
Honestly, i like the studio version, but i don't care for this live version. The beat is completely different. Doesn't even seem like the same song to me. Give the studio version a try.
David Byrne's every cell is annoying as hell. And I hated the way they appropriated African/black music without any acknowledgement.Same as Anus Presley ripping off Little Richard and Big Mamma Thornton.Love your reviews though,Mr Heart.
Watch the whole movie, 'Stop Making Sense.' Arguably the best concert movie ever.
Talking Heads made the '80s worth living.
YES!
This song filled the dance floors back in the day, LoL!
Every Talking Heads concert or video is as much a visual experience as a sonic one.

Total banger ❤ we didn’t burn it down but sure brought it down 🎉

Love this group… 💯👍
This was the encore song - I was there. What a great concert! The energy lasted the entire show.
It’s fusion, many layers and polyrhythms
CLASSIC DANCE MUSIC!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
awesome!
You should check out the studio version. Perhaps a lyric video😊
You should listen to (The Moody blues) wildest dreams as well as( Chicago i)nspiration & hard habit to break. (The romantics t)alking in your sleep
Yep. It's just a party on stage. They seek to entertain and they succeed.
