How to Reset Windows 10 or Windows 11 login Password Without using any Software!
IF THIS DOESN'T WORK TRY THIS • Windows Password Reset...
1 Hold the left shift key and restart pc to get to safemode / advanced menu
and click troubleshoot then click on the option for command prompt.
Now you need to find your Windows directory, normally this would be the c drive or sometimes the D drive.
You can type the dir command to see files and folders in that directory.
2 type, cd windows and then type cd system32
3 rename the utilman file by typing
ren utilman.exe utilman1.exe
4 rename the cmd.exe file by typing
ren cmd.exe utilman.exe
close command prompt and click continue
5 type control userpasswords2 to access the password manager reset the password or create a new one, then close cmd and continue to the Windows login
6 repeat to change back
7 type cd windows and then type cd system32
8 rename the cmd.exe file again
ren utilman.exe cmd.exe
9 rename the utilman.exe back to the original name
ren utilman1.exe utilman.exe
You should now be back to a fully working PC and reset your forgotten Windows 10 or Windows 11 login password.

Does not work
This did not work. It took me to the screen to reset password. The reset button was grayed out. The message said that I have an option to delete the account but if I did I would not have access the account would not have access to the computer. And all of my documents are stored on my Microsoft Drive under my email account. I couldn’t change my password and I’m still at the same place I was two hours ago.
All these recovery options now need an account to launch, including the command prompt. I guess Microsoft has finally patched this.

What do you mean by this? I have just used hirern boot cd to access local accounts. But I’m now trying to figure out the Microsoft logins. Any suggestions?
Can't get to command line. It's asking for the system password... So far I have found nothing that works which I find Highly odd... So when I follow your directions and click command prompt, it takes me to a screen where I select the account and enter my password, which I don't have. So ya, this procedure doesnt work on Windows 10 home. Ive tried it multiple times with the same results...

Didn't work - when I got to the user screen and selected my pc user name the msg stated "you cannot change the password for " - but I remembered it on my own so peace out!

Wow, I'm surprised how easy this security loophole is! But, as others have said, you cannot launch CMD Prompt without an admin password so I did have to boot from a Windows Recovery USB, then it works fine. 👍

@@StoneShards Have you ever considered the possibility that you should back up your "system drive" BEFORE losing your password? Or, even better, don't forget your password. 🙂 You can recover your password in a somewhat convoluted but easy process with Linux. Maybe Mike could do a video on that if you ask him nicely.

Thanks, but this doesn't work anymore - they saw the trick and now block it by asking for a Admin pwd instead of bringing up the command prompt. I simply chose to reset Windows because I don't care about the data on the old pc.

Some may ask "Why not use the netuser cmd to reset the password?" The netuser command requires you to have admin privileges and without having admin privileges, using the netuser command won't work. This is the easiest as utilman actually has admin right privileges.

The best option is created bootable usb with windows 10. Then boot it and pick "repair" option. In windows 10 installer command promt work without password

It does not go to choose options in, it goes to a screen with which disappears in 3 seconds, theres no troubleshoot

seems they might have removed this from some versions of windows, so try the other method listed in the video description
This worked great and had no loss of files or apps. I do have a bitlock which I had the recovery key, and needed to enter before I could access the blue screen to troubleshoot, but otherwise this was by far the easiest way to reset my password which I had forgotten.

I followed the instructions and got to fhe part where I pressed "COMMAND, however after HP PLEASE WAIT, kept appearing , a notice appeared asking for my login password and would not go further, except to advise that I click "FORGOT PASSWORD".

Just tried this process on Laptop.. HP Model14 ck0076 TU. I get to the Command Prompt box, hit that.. the little black Command Box 'Flashes up' for half a second then goes to another screen and asks for the Password...NO JOY Here.. tried it a number of times.. Does Not Work !!!! ANY OTHER WAYS TO GET PAST THIS ?

Hmm, on shift key press gets to restart in command prompt mode but, no prompt - instead asks for password for an admin user, so cant get to step 2 on Acer Aspire E1-522 - I get impression there's a bit of extra code there yes its windows 10 for sure but maybe acer added a bit of extra protection on their boot flash. Tried many times but, no way to get to command prompt the way u describe :-( Is there anything I can do to patch the hard drive via a sata to usb eg to mod the boot code etc ?
Edit: Just saw other comments - yeah looks like that vulnerability has been removed,
guess the only other way is patch the on disk binary somewhere, arrgh :-(
Looking forward to some other idea, there is a reset/reload option but, not wishing to lose my files, havent been well - think its long covid neurological re memory, helps being a food chemist to boost minerals etc but its not all clear so far, groan

When i press the accessibility man after doing all the commands, it doesn't open the command prompt but it just does the normal thing of showing me the accessibility options like sticky keys or magnifier and all that. pls help.

Hello Mike, thank you for sharing, you warned that we should be careful for any damage we make could be catastrophic, you also said this on the first attempt could work and not work, when it did not work more like i did get the accessibility sign to click on. i followed the process again but this time i renamed from utilman1 to utilman12. how can i return to the original file name mike? my worries now. PS i still could not reset the password but i want to return the system as it were. Please help out. thank you.
you can still rename the file back to the original just use 12 not 1

When I click on Command Prompt, it takes me to my account and shows “forgot your password or don’t see your account?” So it does not take me to where you’re telling me to go. Very frustrating when everyone says these steps are so easy when they’re not.

it is okay it doesn't matter if the operating system is 32 or 64 bit, follow the instructions as shown it is the same for both
after breaking the password I failed to rename to original names. The system denied my intension to access. The files were in D:\ the situation stopped in c;\windows\system32 how can I proceed and change the files?

Thank you so much for posting this. I have learned a lot from it...just one question...okay so the part where we can change the passwords and stuff well mine is all grayed out and no names listed. It's all blank on every page. Keep in mind I chose to reset and delete everything on my hp stream labtop windows 11. And I got stuck in a loop where it showed windows symbol and after hard reset I was locked out and sign in says default user0 or default user and I don't know why plus the passwords won't work
if you have done a factory reset there won't be any accounts to recover, those would have been removed as part of the reset
Hello I have few questions
1. Can you explain why utilman.exe needs to be renamed to utilman1.exe instead of going straight to ren cmd.exe utilman.exe?
2. when it's time to change everything back, utilman.exe should've been changed to utilman1.exe from previous modification so if you wanted to do reverse, shouldn't it be ren utilman1.exe cmd.exe?
I'm new at this and just wanted to know out of curiosity
