A wonderful period in my life; I was 17yrs old when this came out. the arrangement, lyrics, vocals, instruments, are beautiful. the 70's jazz-fusion period will never be repeated. Now in my 50's I think about when I was 17 and with everything ahead of me. Love-it! Love-it!
I was 14. Sergio,Astrud Gilberto, Stan Getz! All of it in my home! My father a Guitar musician, sessions musician, family entertainer... My world expansion of music and then some!
There are 5 dislikes of this tune? How is that possible? How could anyone not love everything about this song, the concept, the melody, the chord progression, the singers, the arrangement, the lyrics....? I'm blown away that anyone could dislike almost anything bossa nova, but this tune? It's a classic. It will be around forever -- fortunately, long after the 5 individuals who actually gave it a thumbs down.
Fersomling The melody and the chord progression stand on their own, aside from whether the message is romantic or otherwise. And you could just easily say the message was about biology. I stand by my charge. Anyone who doesn't get this song needs to expand his mind -- and in a lot of directions.
J Lacey I know absolutely nothing about the mathematics of music, nor can I read it, but I know what I like, and I dig this song. I've been listening to Sergio Mendes&Brasil '66 since I was 12 years old in 1968. Lani Hall's voice always gave me aural pleasure, as well as her harmonies with, was it Janice Hansen?
The melody, the harmony, the subtle sweetness of Sergio and his band's almost timeless Bossa Nova style have made this a go to feel good song for years.
Saw this performed by presumably these same singers on record at Cleveland's Front Row Theatre fall of '74. It was the showstopper, unspeakably beautiful, even more so than their hits. The way the two vocalists played off each other was mesmerizing. It's the mud, it's the mud!
I agree! I saw them around the same time at the Oglebay Outdoor Amphitheatre on a beautiful summer night. This song blew me away. I loved the interplay with the vocalists too.
I was eleven years old when I heard this album for the first time and ever since, I been in love with Brazilian music and the sound of Sergio, great vocals and great percussionists always.
Soy guatemalteca, pero al escuchar a Sergio Mendes, siento que su música me dice lo que me encantaría ser brasileña...! Tal vez es una manera de expresar lo que me encanta su música. Gracias por compartir estos videos.
It's the promise of life, it's the joy in your heart - such true words! This song always makes me feel good. First heard it way back in '75 and still hooked on it!
Something amazing about this song is that it is basically about nothing, but it sounds so meaningful. Between the delivery and arrangement, it perfectly captures a feeling of joy that most other songs could only dream of fixing up.
Grew up with this version of this song, then one I got into jazz, found out all these other versions. It's a great song, beautiful and catchy, thoughtful and fun. No wonder people have covered it to death, lol.
This song was always on the periphery for me (neither great nor terrible). Then I heard this version and I was entranced. I found the lyrics online and the song came fully alive for me. A light came on. Now I love this song. Yes, it's love. Coincidentally I am reading "House and the Universe" from Gaston Bachelard.
A stick, a stone, It's the end of the road, It's the rest of a stump, It's a little alone It's a sliver of glass, It is life, it's the sun, It is night, it is death, It's a trap, it's a gun The oak when it blooms, A fox in the brush, A knot in the wood, The song of a thrush The wood of the wind, A cliff, a fall, A scratch, a lump, It is nothing at all It's the wind blowing free, It's the end of the slope, It's a beam, it's a void, It's a hunch, it's a hope And the river bank talks of the waters of March, It's the end of the strain, The joy in your heart The foot, the ground, The flesh and the bone, The beat of the road, A slingshot's stone A fish, a flash, A silvery glow, A fight, a bet, The range of a bow The bed of the well, The end of the line, The dismay in the face, It's a loss, it's a find A spear, a spike, A point, a nail, A drip, a drop, The end of the tale A truckload of bricks in the soft morning light, The shot of a gun in the dead of the night A mile, a must, A thrust, a bump, It's a girl, it's a rhyme, It's a cold, it's the mumps The plan of the house, The body in bed, And the car that got stuck, It's the mud, it's the mud Afloat, adrift, A flight, a wing, A hawk, a quail, The promise of spring And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the promise of life It's the joy in your heart A stick, a stone, It's the end of the road It's the rest of a stump, It's a little alone A snake, a stick, It is John, it is Joe, It's a thorn in your hand and a cut in your toe A point, a grain, A bee, a bite, A blink, a buzzard, A sudden stroke of night A pin, a needle, A sting, a pain, A snail, a riddle, A wasp, a stain A pass in the mountains, A horse and a mule, In the distance the shelves rode three shadows of blue And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the promise of life in your heart, in your heart A stick, a stone, The end of the road, The rest of a stump, A lonesome road A sliver of glass, A life, the sun, A knife, a death, The end of the run And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the end of all strain, It's the joy in your heart
Jason, you answered the hearts of so many posting that. But then you obviously knew and deeply felt what you were doing. There's only one way to say "Thanks," no matter how deeply heartfelt. But here it is. =)
I think there might be a correction to the lyrics due, not sure, because at 74 my hearing isn't the best anymore. Toward the end I believe the line should be "A horse in the moon." If that's right, it's one of the more incredible lines. I was blown away to learn Jobim wrote both the the Brazilian and English lyric. That's really special.
+Brian -- Yes, I agree. The song moves propulsively through those gorgeous lyrics. The whole universe coming to life at all possible scales. Look for Gaston Bachelard's book "The Poetics of Space" -- the chapter titled "House and Universe."
+iliveibreathe Elis Regina would always be the best. I just came across with Aguas De Marcos- Cover song sang by Larissa Viana and worth listening too. I'm not soliciting here but merely but plainly sharing good music. Please check it out. :-)

If you are amazed about the English lyrics, you would be crazy about the original Portuguese lyrics of Águas de Março. I do not want to be rude or unpolite, but English language never could have verses such as "É peroba do campo. É o nó da madeira. Caingá, candeia, é a Matinta Pereira". In my humble opinion, these last verses are the cup of tea of the whole lyrics and are completely untranslated from Brazilian Portuguese into English. Or even particles such as "tombo da ribanceira", "caco de vidro", "resto de toco", "festa da cumeeira", "madeira de vento", "conversa à ribeira das Águas de Março", "pedra de atiradeira", "é o fim da picada", "estilhaço na estrada". All these are typical Brazilian scenes and imagery which only Brazilian Portuguese can express in its full meaning and beauty.
Lovely, dazzling. I always especially look forward to about 2:48… “A pass in the MOUNTAINS A horse and a mule In the distance the shelves Rode three shadows of blue”
My Mother is Cuban American and loved Cuban and Bazilian artist... As child, my Mother would play Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66. Also, Carlos Jobim, Willy Chirino, Ibrahim Ferrer, Vinicius de Moraes, Joao Gilberto, Celia Cruz; to name a few. Some were censored and some where not... Sweet, Wonderful, Gorgeous Music... Yes, I like old, corney stuff... Love it!!!!
Elis' version is stunning as well. 'Has a different vibe in this Mendes version which I attribute a lot to Lani Hall's vocals. Both have a different purity, for lack of a better expression, but maybe it's the mud, it's the mud... lol
I like of that song and that composed by the Brazilian Bossa Nova Legend Writers Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes & Norman Gimbel! 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️🎙️🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👍👍👍👍👍👍

It was by chance I clicked on this, having found the non remixed version to my liking. It seems every version I find is better than the last.
What a brilliant piece of music and song! And so easily likeable too.... This is definitely my favourite version. Though I love the one by Elis Regina as well :)
I could'nt just listen to this beautiful music and I had to let out on how I remember this song, it was my brother's favorite band Brasil 77, when there's a new album out in the market, he would surely buy it, in my chidhood days we would cover our ears so that won't hear the music blaring in our house, God, how I wish I go back in time listening to it together with my brother, he's gone now and reminiscing is the only thing keeps his memories alive in me.
Does anyone feel like.. he or she needs to dance when listening to this song?,... Everybody says it is lovely or gorgeous,.. why not you folks say that you cannot refrain dancing with it?,. ...........or maybe it`s only me ?

This cover of 'Waters of March', is the the first that I've listened to. So, that all the wonderfully gifted musicians who followed to cover this song; I was obligated to listen. Because, Sergio Mendes...
This is the first version that I'd ever heard of this song and even through the years I have heard so many of them this is my favorite, thanks for posting!!
When was 17 Sergio Mendes was among my favorites along with Eddie Harris , John Coltrane , Grant Green and many blue note artist. A wide variety of jazz musicians mixed with the Latin beat of Brazil.
In the southern hemisphere March is the beginning of Fall. The intense sunlight, the brutal heat and humidity of summer is ending. It's a celebration just to be walking outside and enjoying the the things around you!
Thank you for this very beautiful communication. For some reason your wanting to share this with us Northerners moved me greatly. I may perform this sometime and I am going to introduce it with your comment and credit you for it.
Extremely happy that he played this at his concert at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 5 May - I was in my element - my favourite and the "joy in my heart".

This bring back memories of my youth; while others was listening to pop, I was searching for this song on WJZZ in Detroit. It was good then and still refreshing now. Sincerely, Alice the Rose

My High School HAPPY SONG!🌞💐📚🤸🏾🛼🚴🏾♀️🎼🧩👩🏾🏫🛹☎️ c/o 1979
Just great art those were the days
The greatest masterpiece of Jobim.

A light came on. Now I love this song. Yes, it's love. Coincidentally I am reading "House and the Universe" from Gaston Bachelard.
i remember my mum playing this and me reading the lyrics at the back of the album . beautiful poetry
One ofnmy fav song of sergio mendes ..i also sing this song on my gigs every night ...timeless peace of sergio mendes
A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road,
It's the rest of a stump,
It's a little alone
It's a sliver of glass,
It is life, it's the sun,
It is night, it is death,
It's a trap, it's a gun
The oak when it blooms,
A fox in the brush,
A knot in the wood,
The song of a thrush
The wood of the wind,
A cliff, a fall,
A scratch, a lump,
It is nothing at all
It's the wind blowing free,
It's the end of the slope,
It's a beam, it's a void,
It's a hunch, it's a hope
And the river bank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the end of the strain,
The joy in your heart
The foot, the ground,
The flesh and the bone,
The beat of the road,
A slingshot's stone
A fish, a flash,
A silvery glow,
A fight, a bet,
The range of a bow
The bed of the well,
The end of the line,
The dismay in the face,
It's a loss, it's a find
A spear, a spike,
A point, a nail,
A drip, a drop,
The end of the tale
A truckload of bricks
in the soft morning light,
The shot of a gun
in the dead of the night
A mile, a must,
A thrust, a bump,
It's a girl, it's a rhyme,
It's a cold, it's the mumps
The plan of the house,
The body in bed,
And the car that got stuck,
It's the mud, it's the mud
Afloat, adrift,
A flight, a wing,
A hawk, a quail,
The promise of spring
And the riverbank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the promise of life
It's the joy in your heart
A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump,
It's a little alone
A snake, a stick,
It is John, it is Joe,
It's a thorn in your hand
and a cut in your toe
A point, a grain,
A bee, a bite,
A blink, a buzzard,
A sudden stroke of night
A pin, a needle,
A sting, a pain,
A snail, a riddle,
A wasp, a stain
A pass in the mountains,
A horse and a mule,
In the distance the shelves
rode three shadows of blue
And the riverbank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the promise of life
in your heart, in your heart
A stick, a stone,
The end of the road,
The rest of a stump,
A lonesome road
A sliver of glass,
A life, the sun,
A knife, a death,
The end of the run
And the riverbank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the end of all strain,
It's the joy in your heart
Jason, you answered the hearts of so many posting that. But then you obviously knew and deeply felt what you were doing. There's only one way to say "Thanks," no matter how deeply heartfelt. But here it is. =)
James Lacey It's a beautiful song....

Jason Ford Thanks for your post! It's my favorite thing to do, read the lyrics as I listen to music on TH-cam.
+Brian -- Yes, I agree. The song moves propulsively through those gorgeous lyrics. The whole universe coming to life at all possible scales. Look for Gaston Bachelard's book "The Poetics of Space" -- the chapter titled "House and Universe."
Wonderful!!! I can sing this all day. This is such a great stimulant for any gloomy day! Such a treat!!! thanks...
STILL the jam after all of these years.
Absolutely gorgeous! One of my favourite versions of this (number one is Elis Regina's, of course!)
+iliveibreathe Elis Regina would always be the best.
I just came across with Aguas De Marcos- Cover song sang by Larissa Viana and worth listening too. I'm not soliciting here but merely but plainly sharing good music. Please check it out.
:-)
I heard that version. It's....okay. Hahaha! Sorry. I'm terribly picky.
+iliveibreathe I would highly stand with your choice.
No need for apology. I understand.
Peace.
:-)
+iliveibreathe hahah sorry picky is like angry?
+Felix A. Vargas A. Hahaha! No, picky means I am very selective with the music I like, sometimes too selective.
My favorite version. Makes me feel like I'm walking down a beautiful villa.
Listening to this reminds of Ayala Malls, offering the best things in life. Oh damn you pandemic!
Jobim was a master in writing simple lyrics to his songs. This song is very visual.
My favorite stanza is near the end.
"A pass in the mountains, a horse and a mule,

Gotta hear that TY!
excellent sinatra jobim album. one of sinatra's best work.
All these are typical Brazilian scenes and imagery which only Brazilian Portuguese can express in its full meaning and beauty.

A very unbiased explanation of life on earth
Makes me cry every time hahahah
When was 17 Sergio Mendes was among my favorites along with Eddie Harris , John Coltrane , Grant Green and many blue note artist.
A wide variety of jazz musicians mixed with the Latin beat of Brazil.
Great Jobim song 👏👏👏
In the southern hemisphere March is the beginning of Fall. The intense sunlight, the brutal heat and humidity of summer is ending. It's a celebration just to be walking outside and enjoying the the things around you!
Thank you for this very beautiful communication. For some reason your wanting to share this with us Northerners
moved me greatly. I may perform this sometime and I am going to introduce it with your comment and credit you for it.
Eternally exquisite in every possible way❤
musica maravillosa,por siempre.
I suddenly remembered the Ayala Center Makati TVC.
You want this song to never end.
Sergio whistling while playing. One of the greatest sounds in music.

music from my childhood. Love it!
Extremely happy that he played this at his concert at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 5 May - I was in my element - my favourite and the "joy in my heart".
Wish I could sing it without looking at the lyrics...lol...one of my favorite songs...thanks to Antonio Carlos Jobim!
Amazing
A stick, a stone
It's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump
It's a little alone
It's a sliver of glass
It is life, it's the sun
It is night, it is death
It's a trap, it's a gun
The oak when it blooms
A fox in the brush
The knot in the wood
The song of a thrush
The wood of the wind
A cliff, a fall
A scratch, a lump
It is nothing at all
It's the wind blowing free
It's the end of the slope
It's a beam it's a void
It's a hunch, it's a hope
And the river bank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the end of the strain
The joy in your heart
The foot, the ground
The flesh and the bone
The beat of the road
A slingshot stone
A fish, a flash
A silvery glow
A fight, a bet
The range of a bow
The bed of the well
The end of the line
The dismay in the face
It's a loss, it's a find
A spear, a spike
A point, a nail
A drip, a drop
The end of the tale
A truckload of bricks
In the soft morning light
The sound of a shot
In the dead of the night
A mile, a must
a thrust, a bump
It's a girl, it's a rhyme
It's a cold, it's the mumps
The plan of the house
The body in bed
And the car that got stuck
It's the mud, it's the mud
A float, a drift
A flight, a wing
A hawk, a quail
The promise of spring
And the river bank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the promise of life
It's the joy in your heart
A snake, a stick
It is John, it is Joe
It's a thorn in your hand
And a cut in your toe
A point, a grain
A bee, a bite
A blink, a buzzard,
A sudden stroke of night
A pass in the mountains
A horse and a mule
In the distance the shelves
Rode three shadows of blue
And the river talks
Of the waters of March
It's the promise of life
In your heart, in your heart
A stick, a stone
The end of the load
The rest of a stump
A lonesome road
A sliver of glass
A life, the sun
A knight, a death,
The end of the run
And the river bank talks
Of the waters of March
It's the end of all strain
It's the joy in your heart
This bring back memories of my youth; while others was listening to pop, I was searching for this song on WJZZ in Detroit. It was good then and still refreshing now. Sincerely, Alice the Rose
