- Chowder is a cartoon that premiered on Cartoon Network in 2007 and ran new episodes until the cancellation of the series in 2010. The show follows Chowder, who the show is named after. He is many things: a chef's apprentice, a scatterbrain, a “cat, bear, rabbit” mix (according to the series), but more than anything, he is the king of breaking the 4th wall in animated shows. Chowder, the show, is amazing and unique to a lot of other animated shows for several things from its animation style and voice cast to its writing, but more than anything, its unique for the number of times and numerous crafty ways it pulls off breaking the 4th wall. The show has received recognition for its quality in the form of several Emmy nominations and an actual win during its run and is still beloved by many to this day. Chowder even makes an appearance in a Lil Nas X Video that has garnered several tens of millions of views since its upload. This just goes to show Chowder holds its place firmly among the cartoon greats of its era of animation! This video explores why.

@@jess4you13 That was Tara Strong in case anyone was wondering. She's also known for voicing Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls and Raven in Teen Titans. She was also friends with Mary Kay Bergman, which kind of helps to explain how she can do so many different voices at once.
My favorite is when Chowder draws on the screen and Gazpacho has to clean it up. Chowder points at the cartoon networks logo.
"Gazpacho....what about that one?"
"That one doesn't come off....I've tried."
That scene had to be seen back in 2000's with the old CN logo to live the real thing, it was like magic XD
@@TheAutobotPower The guys from south park kept a little piece of carboard on the lower right of the screen so the logo would not interfere with the show.
I'd love if they brought Chowder back, but this time to streaming with NO logo. At the start of the episode they start off by, you guessed it, breaking the Fourth Wall. Mung brings notice to the fact that they got canceled but they are back, chowder replying "Yeah, but something feels different", unable to explain what is different at first the episode focuses around it, at the end chowder points out that there no longer is a logo where the CN one used to be.

I was so confused about the thumbnail for a sec lol
One thing I always loved about Chowder was the clothing, the patterns that move as the characters move. They arent stationary print on the clothes but print on the background that can only be revealed by the characters clothing and depending on the character the print is different (don't know how else to describe the way they've done it)
They put a layer whit a pattern in the background, only visible behind the clothes, so if the character moves, we can see different parts of that layer.
It’s like the clothes are moving holes revealing a pattern behind the background
Imagine a UV light, shining on an area, that ray of light is the character and the hidden revealing images is the texture of the clothes. Wherever the light points is where that texture is shown, it's basically a small alpha channel layer being moved around a set layer behind it.
I think Chowder took cues from Sheep In The Big City. A self-aware show with print graphics textures for clothes
its basically a greenscreen that only applies on the clothes and then theres a pattern that stays stationary

Maybe not better than Chowder but, I would like to remind everyone that there was an episode of The grim adventures of Billy and Mandy where an Alien was speaking a weird language and Grim understood him and the reasoning for this was the fact that he knew how to read subtitles backwards. Never understood as a child but my head exploded when I saw it again as an adult
There’s also Ed, Edd ‘n’ Eddy, they mention the 4th wall many times, one clever example is Ed saying “prepare to meet your maker” and before Jimmy is trampled on he references the creator Danny Antonucci, or how reminding Eddy how he mentored Jimmy about scams when he couldn’t think of one, Eddy responds, “Didn’t we win an Emmy for that episode?”.
This was so fun watching . It brought laughs and smiles to me . The show was fun and I appreciate it more because of the way you explained the way it’s was done . Shame they ran out of the money to continue the show.
If only they renew the show. Basically add more season before chowder grows up or keep adding new episodes for each season so it'll last longer🤷🏾♂️

lol money wasn't an issue to continue the show. CN management decided to end the show saying "audience grew up for this show". Money never was an issue.

Chowder is literally my favorite cartoon of all time because it made me laugh in ways other cartoons couldn't. I never even heard of 4th wall jokes until I started watching Chowder and I thought being self aware was pure genius. I love all the literal humor and how the most random and out of nowhere stuff would happen for no reason. Like in the episode Bigfood Chowder uses Mr. Giant realistic human nose to find Bigfood and they just randomly shoot across the sky that scene still cracks me up to this day
Chowder was the only TV show that I was there for the series premire to the series final, And that's because the show never failed to lose my interest.

Man Chowder truly was way ahead of it's time, especially with the "We're in a cartoon" moment which actually blew my mind when I was as I never seen a 4th wall break before until that. Sure there were educational programs and video game tutorials but that kind of stuff are for teaching you about what's going and doesn't really effect the world and characters. But with Chowder, the fact that a piece of fictional media achowledges it's own non-existence really made my suspension of disbelief freak out when I was like 6-7.

I really like the 4th wall breaks, but my favorite thing about the show was the character design. Mostly the clothes, I really like how if the clothes had a pattern, it looked like the pattern doesn't move when the characters do. I really like that
I was a creative choice and it still boggles my mind.
This show was so much fun when i was younger. I haven't seen it in a while but i remember everybody HATED it, and i never understood why. Great seeing it get more love.

I never got to fully enjoy Chowder because my parents walked in during a scene where Chowder is naked infront of a group of old ladies, and then told me to never watch it again because it was "inappropriate." Although, in the times that I did manage to watch it, I always liked looking at the art styles of the show. My favorite 4th-wall break is where Mung essentially breaks down the plot of about half to a third of the episodes (they use a weird ingredient, Mung tells Chowder not to eat it, he turns away, Chowder eats it, hijinks ensue).
That would be like if you were watching Rugrats and your parents forbade you from watching it because Tommy tends to get naked in the show.
Deadpool has been real quiet since this video got released.

I swear chowder was very underrated alongside flapjack and both should have more seasons.

KND - Kid's Next Door. A show about kids next door. A large tree house with secret agent vibes for kids.
SU - Steven Universe. A show about a human-alien rock gem hybrid kid and his alien rock moms. He deals with puberty and how to grow up.
RS - (I honestly don't know..? Probably Ren and Stimpy?) Edit: Regular Show. A blue jay and a raccoon are besties and working together with a gumball machine... and that's all I know.
6teen - Another show I don't know.
MLP - My Little Pony. It's a show about cute little ponies! And Friendship is Magic!

Honestly you can make a case that Ed Edd n Eddy did also do the 4th wall thing just as well over the course of the series. 1+1=Ed is probably the biggest example as it just deconstructs the entire 4th Wall and throws it out the window.
I agree since Ed, Edd n Eddy is the 2nd most 4th wall breaking next to Chowder.

Personally I think Gumball has the best 4th wall break. like the universe is literally the static of the universe and some characters are aware that the universe resets after every 30 minutes (every episode lasts 25 minutes so it makes sense)
