Overthemore it is deadly dangerous to be confronted with the maternal aggression of a donkey! One of my aunts nearly died from the first hoofshot in her fronthead! ... Somehow young girls are not able to keep their hands off newborn hoofwearing animals, unfortunately!
Congrats on the new baby, he's gorgeous! A piece of farm advice that applies to all animals, please be careful at how much you interfere with mum and baby especially just after birth, it's a great way of making them reject their newborn before they can form a strong enough bond, especially if she's never foaled before. I know it's exciting but she was clearly unhappy with you being so close to her baby and was warning you off. Imprinting isn't the be-all end-all and can cause bigger issues. Just an opinion, no disrespect. All the best.
I couldn’t agree more!!! It always bothers me to see humans run in as soon as baby equines are born. She’s TRYING to protect her baby! That’s her job. Sure is cute though!
I SURELY enjoyed this video!!! That baby is so freakin' CUTE!!!! I met my first and only donkey here in NC some years back now. His name was Amos. I was brought on to help with a moving job at this farm. When I saw Amos (because we hadn't started worming yet) I just walked over to the fence and kinda knelt down. Amos just came right over to me. It was such an overwhelming experience for me I just started crying. I didn't want to leave him and don't think he wanted me to leave either. The owner of the property told me Amos doesn't just go up to strangers. He said Amos must feel there's something "special" about me. I don't know all about that. I just LOVE animals since I was a baby. I'm 64 now and this stuff STILL moves me to tears of joy!!!!
I thought the same thing...musta been a helluva birth...poor mama Freedom!!! She earned her badge and every right to protect her baby, right? Can't blame her being feisty!
Yeah, if the newborn donkey is a male they usually come out a lil bigger than their sisters. And they will grow for a longer time and become quite full of muscles... ;-)
I LOVE how Freedom is such a protective momma. Good for her! Not sure if you are going to have a name contest or anything like that but here are some suggestions: Abe (the babe), Señor Jack, Filmor, Mr. D. Mario. Thanks for sharing your life with us!

Some name suggestions: 1) Esteban (Spanish for Steven) 2) Benito (Lil Ben) 3) Stevie Ray (Vaughn) 4) Oakley (all your Oak trees, and Oklahoma) 5) Beau (Bo Bo) .... He's so cute with DJ holding him like a little baby in her arms! Hope he stays so sweet & mellow! Looking forward to seeing him grow, and to Dolly's soon to come baby! How wonderful for the kids to see all these animals being born!
Donkeysmom's need is first of all this: Leave her and her donkeybaby alone and don't do anything that could bring her to the idea, you wanna sell it later on. That idea can cause heavy maternal aggressions against all sorts of farmers, markets and so on!
Congratulations on your new little one ! Have been waiting on pins and needles for this video ever since Kevin from Hidden Heights Farms broke the news in the Live Chat this weekend ! He's just too stink'n adorable ! And yes much bigger than what was expected being a mini. Freedom is such a good protective mommy. Stay happy, healthy, hydrated and safe God bless.
Daniel I used to be a big fan and I know you're into the TH-cam that's how you make your living but this was one of your better videos you put out since you retired no endorsements
Adorable, and now a permanent smile since I first saw the little guy. Living out on the farm the last 26 yrs and still my fav animals was Jack the donkey next door and for 20 yrs we were buddies.
It's really clear that retirement is good for both of you. It's so lovely to see the two of you out in the pasture cuddling on the baby and having such a good time with each other. That baby donkey may very well be the cutest thing I've seen in a long time! xo Heather🇨🇦
Howdy Heather! Ever seen a young kitten trying to impress the guy who bought it in the sense of: "Take care, I'm a predator, I can become really dangerous!" But all they get out of their lil mouth is a high pitched flutesound as a mouse! Instead of meeow they just make mee and their grumbling sounds like a squeaking old coffeemill. LOL! That is really adorable and sooo funny!

It's easy, at least on an island where there are no predators: Just wait for starting sundown and after grazing among the old volcanos, their tits get so loaded, that these goats start going home to their stable on their own cuz they wann get milked... They desserve it and they love to be milked as the longer the goatmilk is acccumulating in their tits, the more it gets quite hard to carry and even painful. When the farmer lets them wait too long, they will knock him with their horns and make "Meeee" to remind him it's their turn to be milked finally... ;-) Some even may get angry and kick the bucket under another goat, just to say: "It's my turn to be sucked free now!" Awesome. He's beautiful. I've had lots of foals over the years as I had a time of raising Arabian horses, and having a good relationship with the dam LONG before foaling is critical to being able to be around during foaling. Even so, some mares are just too nervous/protective/freaked. My best mare, whom I could actually sit under her belly and shave for a show, could trust with green kids who didn't know not to run around behind a horse, was so good, we could have people over when she foaled. There was a trust there. My other mares, never had visitors for their foals until the little bugger was 2-3 days old, or longer. Every mom is different. I had several foalings with no problems. Then one year, I got a barn cam, and also did research on all the things that could go wrong during a foaling. Wouldn't you know. That year, I was staying up late, watching Scarlet on the cam (instead of camping out by the stall), and saw her go into labor. I went out and saw the horrible thing. A red bag. Not the clear yellowish bubble that precedes foal feet. A red bag is when the placenta has shredded and the foal is no longer protected. I immediately called the vet, then soaped up and started working on getting that foal out. This was also my awesome mare, Scarlet. She hadn't laid down yet, but as soon as I started working on her, she went down. We did get the foal out, (huge bay filly- her first girl), but thanks to the red bag issue, she had been without oxygen too long and was brain damaged. This was the first foal Scarlet ever had that she had no interest in. I guess she knew by the smell or something, that this foal wasn't going to make it. It was a horrible night, but after several weeks of having the vet come out to flush out Scarlet's uterus because there were still pieces of rotting placenta in there, I thank God that this happened when I had those cameras up. I would have lost both the filly and the mare that night if I had not been on top of things.

That's all good. But I am puzzled that no one shows such love to another human who is not part of their family. I wonder why?
She is absolutely a good mama she loves her baby she’s guarding her baby what a good mama🥰💕💕💕💕
God bless you for taking such wonderful care of that donkey what a blessed life you have to be able to have one
