For those wondering about how this can break canon - the Ninth Doctor is the last of the pre-Silence of the Library Doctors to meet River on Big Finish. They have always managed to come up with an excuse for it.

I genuinely believe he’s leaving because his story arc is going nowhere. I reckon if they bought Billie in to do some stories set during Series 1 he’d have stayed a bit longer.

⁠​⁠​⁠​⁠@@joefreeman3087actually it’s Eccleston. He’s the one who’s been adamant about having no pre-Rose companions, or tackling the time war. The writers somewhat have their hands tied by those restrictions. ‘The Green Gift’ even felt like Big Finish doing a test run to try and ease Eccleston into the idea of having new companions.
