"New fear unlocked", well it is a Moffat episode and he seems to delight in making everything possible scary ;) You can thank him for the empty child, the clockwork droids and the weeping angels so far.
Moffat had a habit of making little things terrifying
I love how he has tormented viewers for years 🤣
@@Venemofthe888 Notably the use of scary repeated phrases - "Are you my mummy?", "Don't even blink, blink and you're dead", "Hey! Who turned out the lights?", "Donna Noble has left the library, Donna Noble has been saved". There are other repeated tricks he does, but probably best to save mentioning them until a later date...
Doctor who is best when it's making the mundane, everyday world scary.
@@Venemofthe888 He also has a habit of ruining them. lol.
"You've only just met him!" - "No, he only just met me."
One of the most Doctor Who lines ever!
You're gonna have: "Donna Noble has left the library." "Hey, who turned out the lights?" " Donna Noble has been saved." in your head for the rest of your life.
Alex Kingston, who plays River Song was born in 1963, which was the same year Doctor Who first started on BBC television.
So was Russell T. Davies, funnily enough.
@@Creek932 Indeed
She looks amazing for 60! You could have told me she was 35 and I would believe you.
Wow. I thought she was like 45 or something.❤
You can tell that Stephen Moffat was the father of young children when he wrote this: he takes a classic childhood fear - the fear of the dark - and weaponises it by turning it into a Doctor Who monster. A classic episode of nu-Who - and one that emphasises Donna's compassion so beautifully.
I find this approach better of this era of even many S5+ episodes, than S14 or new S1 of a childhood understanding but they make it still great with all these details, many the current lacks and also for a teen/adult audience these older stories present so much besides the childhood fear.
Most Moffat monsters are based on primal fears. It's brilliant to anthropomorphize fear like this. And most of the time, we won't even see the thing we fear at all, just know that it is there.
"I never land on Sundays" Is a bit of an injoke as Doctor Who at the time of this episode being aired was only ever broadcast on Saturdays. What makes this funny in hindsight however is years later the broadcast date for Doctor Who would infact be changed to Sundays!
Happy sunday
And in one of the upcoming episodes he does in fact land on a Sunday.
That is so funny! I didn't realise the inside joke haha
Well, not 'only ever' - During the 80s there were periods where it was on various weekdays. But never Sundays. Until 2017. (Discounting Christmas Specials because Christmas isn't really a day of the week. The days of the week lose all meaning during that period of the year)
Imagine having to wait a week to find out what happened. This is peak Dr Who, the most popular the show has ever been and one of the best two parters you will ever see
She didn't say "a few days early", she said "in the days before he knew me".
The squareness gun is what Captain Jack had back when we first meet him in series one. The Doctor substitutes it for a banana from the banana groves that replaced the weapons factory that made it. No idea how the gun came to be in the possession of River, I don't think it's ever stated in the series, not sure about other Who media.
There's no reason River can't have acquired a different one from some other source at some point. Jack's wasn't the only one ever manufactured.
Moffat said Jack left it in the TARDIS and that’s how River came across it. He wanted it to be another indicator of how well she must know the Doctor but didn’t have the time to fully flesh out all the little hints etc he put in
@@murdomaclachlan Absolutely, the second and the third sentence of my post weren't necessarily supposed to be causally linked - though Doctor Who does have a tendency to deliberately call back to certain items and individuals. Perhaps I should have said "No idea how this particular gun came to be in the possession of River..." as
we never see her use such a gun in future episodes.
@@robertwareham8466 Ah, gotcha, misunderstood what you meant. Thanks for the clarification!
@@murdomaclachlan No probs, and looks like it was intended to be the same gun after all, so there's that xD
Donna: "So why don't you know me. Where am I in the future?"
Jules: "Oh no.. I am terrified"
😭 Every single Doctor Who fan who loves this series and Donna especially feels this. They have such good comradary and friendship together, its hard to imagine that it might not last or what could end up happening...
Glad you're still enjoying these episodes, your reactions are a highlight of my Wednesdays coming home to see your videos!
well a human does not go over about 90 years and the doctor will take propably a few thousend years... so it´s actually not that special, that someone from the doctors future does not know donna....
and yet, river song, has heard of donna, which could actually mean the future doctor talked about donna... and knowing, he seldom talks about former companions, that must mean how big her impact was on the doctor...
This episode scared me so much as a kid that I couldn't go upstairs to bed after it aired
This episode gave me a terrible fear of the dark that I still have to this day. :(
Still, an amazing episode that's almost impossible to forget (for better or for worse)
This library (the main circle room) was Swansea’s real library. It closed down however and moved locations. This episode was filmed during the moving process but all the books had been removed. So all the books on the shelves are just files with fancy covers on them. The building is now an art school. I remember being 5 years old and in awe of the grandeur of the library on my very first visit. I adored it there. Also the steps with the balcony where the doctor and donna first end up is the Brangwyn Hall which is a big music venue in Swansea. It has been the venue for MANY episodes of doctor who ❤
Spot the famous person. This week the award goes to …
*Alex Kingston* who played River Song. Alex is also known for playing Elizabeth Corday in ER and Moll Flanders in The Fortunes and Misfortunes of Moll Flanders. She has also been in CSI , Law and Order and Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
Honourable mentions go to …
*Josh Dallas* who played Node 2 and was in Once Upon a Time and Manifest
*Colin Salmon* who played Dr Moon and was in Eastenders and the Lazarus Project
*O-T Fagbenle* who played Other Dave but is better known for playing Luke in the Handmaid's Tale
Dont forget Talulah Riley (who played Miss Evangelista) who was in the two st. trinians movies one of which with David Tennant. She was also in Westworld too
And Steve Pemberton, of the League of Gentlemen as Strackman.
Colin Salmon and Alex Kingston were both in early seasons of Arrow, too.
Proper Dave ("who turned out the lights?") is Harry Peacock, of Toast of London fame - Ray Purchase.
@@Venemofthe888 Also Mrs Elon Musk
Both Colin Salmon and Alex Kingston have also appeared in "Arrow" with John Barrowman.
EDIT: Beaten to it, cause I got distracted. 😁
I do like how this loosely ties in to the previous episode with a famous author and her books still being read very far in the future just like the doctor pointed out. They never stop reading them even in the far future. Im not sure how intentional it is but its cool
This was RTD. The likelihood that it was purely coincidental, even though it was a tiny link, is minimal.
This is one of the best two-parters the show has ever done. I even became somewhat friendly with Talulah Riley (Miss Evangelista) a bit on Twitter, after her appearance on the show.
Cool. She was awesome!
Ironic!
@@leighbomaya Haha, yes.
She didn't say she was a "couple of days too early," she said it was "early days," as in, this must be one of the earliest points where their timelines intersect. She subsequently said the message she sent to the Doctor reached him too soon or essentially was received by the Doctor at a point in his past further back than she had intended.
@@tomswift3482 No, not even sort of. "A couple of days too early" would be applicable if she was trying to reach him on Friday and contacted him the previous Monday instead. The fact that he has no idea who she is makes her _ages_ too early; at least months, but more likely _years._ Especially when you take into account the things she says in this episode when she's asking him, "Have we done thi yet? Did we do that?" For him to know her to even the slightest degree that she was expecting would take more than "a couple of days"...
The fact the Doctor travels in time means he meets people who know him that he has never met before.
This Library (part 1) is a... whole thing and it needs the next piece to pull the threads of the story together.
Welcome to the confusion that can be Dr. Who.
Your last line: I can't wait to see the next part. - Lucky for you, you don't have to wait... unlike us.
😉
Yes!! We no longer have to wait, but I still do as I don't have the time to watch more haha and also, I feel that waiting really builds that anticipation!!
@@julesreacts You really held yourself back an entire week for this one? This is easily my number one favourite double episode. It's the one most people revisit with so much more context after many many series.
@@julesreactsI'm honestly surprised at your restraint with some of these two parters! But at the same time, it's rare in this age of on demand that people get to experience how we all watched it the first time around, so that's great too.
Idk if anyone’s said but at 13:15 you can see a picture of rose and a wolf
The Vashta Nerada are definitely one of my favourite Dr Who enemies, along with the Weeping Angels.
If you weren't afraid of the dark before watching this episode/s (it's a 2 parter), then you certainly will be afterwards.
Too many episodes in this season make me laugh, happy, excited and/or sad at the same time. This one does all in the same one.
Yes, Donna's compassion is a thing to behold. Love her.
This is one of three stories that truly terrified me as a kid (and still probably slightly raise my bpm) with the others not surprisingly being The Empty Child and Blink. "Hey who turned out the lights" will live in your head rent free.
I remember watching this for the first time and River Song quickly became my favourite character. I also got really scared to go into shadows or the dark. Well more so than usually.
the two most bone-chilling statements in all of Doc Who for me :
"Are you my mommmy ? "
and
"Hey who turned out the lights"
Even the angels don't spook me like that
"You know the Doctor but you don't know me", well The Doctor lives for hundreds of years, and humans for less than 100, so it is normal for him outlive his companions. Just not common to meet one after they already met and know him.
He was officially around 903 years old when he met Donna, if you don't count time he spent in some form of stasis.
Since River also travels in time, we could imagine that Donna could conceivably travel with the Doctor until she dies of old age or retires to take a rest. This is what Rose wanted to do. Whether that is the story of any of the companions, we shall see.
@@HuntingViolets Um, spoilers...
This one is great. One of my favourite episodes and monsters. They hooked me hard with this one. I love him running down all these nasty aliens that Dr Who has fought and defeated and their weaknesses until he gets to the vashta nerada. With the Vashta Nerada, you run. Great tension build in this episode.
I love Donna Noble and her Grandpa. She may be my favourite companion.
Can't wait for the next one.
not every shadow, but ANY shadow!
I made the mistake of watching this late at night with the lights off the first time around... didn't get to sleep until about 3 am. This is probably Steven Moffat's scariest episode. But so, so good. Can't wait to see what you think of part 2!
Watching this before bed is a huge mistake haha! They always give us new things to fear 😱
By the way, distant episode titles can sometimes be spoilers so try to avoid reading episode titles too far in advance. Plus, if you buy DVD box sets, cover artwork can SOMETIMES be a little spoilery, such as showing upcoming monsters or possibly even guest appearances, or even if there's going to be a new Doctor which you may not know about. When you get to season 5, the back/inside of the DVD box set may be a little spoilery, so maybe get hubby to handle this 'dangerous material' for you! LOL 😀
The fact that you REALLY go out of your way to avoid spoilers to such a high degree, is so great and something definitely to mention at the start of your videos as, honestly, it makes the video more appealing knowing you're viewing completely cold and uninformed.
Thanks again for the AWESOME vids! I don't watch a lot of reaction videos but yours have really captivated me, I just think you're the perfect viewer, so full of emotion, empathy, it's just beautiful.
The times when Doctor Who was well written, funny, exciting and suspenseful.
The "gun" that river song used is the same that captain jack used in the empty child 2 parter.
I forgot this was a 2-parter! This is a truly scary episode, with the data "echoes" truly sad. I also loved Donna's empathy in this episode. I'm so excited to watch you watch the conclusion. Thanks Jules! ❤
I think what makes Doctor Who so good at being scary when it wants to be, even though it's absurd and silly and a bit camp most of the time, is that the writers understand the roots of a fear. Like how people who are "scared of the dark" (which included me when I first watched this episode as a kid) aren't scared of the dark. We're scared of what could be *in* the dark. This show *gets* that.
And that's why the Vashta Nerada are one of my favourite aliens created for the modern era of the show (alongside the Ood, though those are a lot less threatening, at least when they're not possessed).
"It's what's in the dark. It's what's always in the dark." Never fails to send a little chill up my spine, as does "You can see them sometimes... the dust in sunbeams..."
And now you've met the most enigmatic River Song! Who could she be and how does she know The Doctor? Potent questions indeed!
This two parter is amazing. The fact that it stands out even in the middle of Series 4, where literally every episode is great, really says a lot. It's definitely one of the writer Steven Moffat's best stories in my opinion.
Donna Noble has been saved. Donna Noble has left The Library. Donna Noble has been saved. Donna Noble has left The Library. Donna Noble has been saved. Donna Noble has left The Library...
Edit: Also, you've actually seen that "squareness gun" that River Song used to open a hole in the wall for them to escape the swarm-in-a-suit - It's a Sonic Blaster, Captain Jack Harkness had one back when Rose and the 9th Doctor first met him in "The Empty Child."
I wouldn't say the Ood are monsters.
@@HuntingViolets Good point, bad choice of words on my part as I was trying to concisely refer to those two designs as favourites of mine under one umbrella.
I'll edit my comment to use a different word. I don't normally think of the Ood as monsters though, just to be clear. If you look at my comments on Jules' reactions to The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, or to Planet of the Ood that should be evidence enough.
@@gazzamanazza4pm ❤
Never in my life have I clicked on a video so fast 😂
SAME!!!!
"Is that Rose's writing?"
The story arc right now is working on two MASSIVE plot lines. This is peak Who. I mean really peak. Echoes of the past and hints of the future.
This was a good intro to a an actual scary baddie. The Angles, the gas mask kid and this shows how good Stevie Moffat can be, it’ll be interesting to see how you react to a lot of his later work.
"Do you know him or don't you" ... "Donn-AHHHHH!"
i saw all these back in the day, but it's great to be able to watch them again through your eyes! it adds a freshness to the experience
Ahh thank you!! I'm glad you enjoyed this one!
I love Alex Kingston. I first watched her on "ER" back when she joined the cast in '97. She was amazing on it too!
This story is goated, like seriously this is peak doctor who
This two part episode is in my top 5 favorite episodes of Doctor Who ever... and it even gets better on rewatch
Oh Squareness Gun - Captain Jack had one in his first episode remember? :D
Your anxiety at the end of this episode is real. I appreciate you reminding us what it felt like the first time we were there. The peril and uncertainty were awful and we had to wait.
Now, This two-parter is the best on rewatch. You’ll go back to this after future episodes and spot the threads. 💙💙
The same writer wrote "Blink", but as justly famous as that episode is, I don't think it has anything like the rewatchability that this story has. In years to come, you'll find yourself rewatching this story and loving it (and being moved by it) much more, for reasons that I won't even hint at.
The end of this season is the best season finale still to this day in my mind.
Man this episode is so awesome, it sets us up with quite a lot of things that you have to wait for in the future
“Who” is all about turning regular things into things to fear objects. From day 1 plastics to Bluetooth earpieces and GPS in our cars. Of course the dark, which we already fear, can now be explained and emphatically grasped.
this is a very important episode as it introduces River Song, someone I think you'll like since her motto is " No Spoilers" , your on a good track with your thinking, the diary is thick, and old, as to Donna, wellllllllll, it's no secret that traveling with the Doctor isn't exactly safe, sooooo........ love your reaction, can't wait for next week and part two!
You totally did the "Welllllll" on purpose, didn't you 🤣 now I will forever read your comments in the Doctor's voice hahaha 💜
@@julesreacts lol, mayyyyybe!I'd be honored to be thought of in the same vein as the Doctor.
GREAT episodes! i always felt sorry for River and Donna's guy friend at the end.
Hello, Jules💜
As eerie as The Empty Child, creepier actually, and like it, a Top Tier episode.
You've no idea how I have been anticipating this moment! Enjoy.😊
Tom 💜 I can see why it was so loved! Indeed, a wonderful episode and I have my fear of the dark firmly reinforced 🤣
"Miss Evangelista is the girl" Ok, that's a new one.
Incase no-one else has said it though, the squareness gun was the same type and probably from the same Villengard factory as the one that Captain jack used in s1 'The Doctor Dances'. Villengard has just had a call-back in the latest episode, last Saturday.
Love, love, love Colin Salmon as The Doctor Moon, & don’t even get me started on Alex Kingston 😍🔥
I have a great photo with Alex from a Con where she looks lovely, & I have the BIGGEST, stupidest grin on my face! They offered to take another photo, but I told them that it wouldn’t get any better. Ms. Kingston was very kind about my sheer dorkiness.😅
*LOVE* the character of River Song
Wonderful reaction, as always 💜💜➕🌈🟦
It took until this episode for me to finally start to see Catherine as possibly 'not just a loudmouth comedienne' after all, and it's all down to one line: "That was the most horrible thing I've ever seen!"
Needles to say, she was echoing my own sentiment there as I still think this monster is absolutely terrifying! 😱
This two parter is one of the best episodes of doctor who, and pretty much collectively loved. Season 4 is full of bangers after bangers, its so wonderful
I've finally caught up with all your Doctor Who reviews and ended up on one of my favourite monsters of the week. Can't wait for your next one.
Ahh yay! I've just uploaded the next episode as well 💜
Long time watcher, first time commenter. And here we are! My absolute favourite story in all of NuWho. Everything from writing to acting to musical score hits so perfectly and it's the first time we get some big questions asked that carry on into later series. Super glad to share your first experience with this truly 10/10 story.
Ahh thank you!! So glad you enjoyed this one 💜
Series 4 hast so many good episodes
I still to this day have trauma from hearing, "Donna Noble has left the library, Donna Noble has been saved" over and over XD Also Alex Kingston was my First Doctor who crush as a kid because of this episode. Something about curly hair just gets me XD This Episode is Golden Moffat Writting tho. The Science behind the scifi concept are so on point in this 2 parter and the best part is that most viewers will accept the sci-fi elements because well its sci-fi and that's just how sci-fi is. But Moffat has done his research and the concepts and Sci Fi elements used are all grounded in real scientific findings. Take for example the Data ghost, which isn't just a sci-fi idea that's real.
if you're interested here are some more interesting details on that. Back in the early 2000s researchers were looking over brain activity recorded during operations. if you have ever gone into surgery that requires anaesthesia they will monitor your brain activity to make sure you don't wake up etc. The researchers were looking over these recordings in patients who had died during operations etc and they found recordings that lingered on for up to an hour after their recorded death. These signals were first thought of as just background noise by doctors but when the researchers looked into the recordings they discovered that the recorded "noise" was in fact remnants of the brain's electrical activity looping around and around growing weaker and weaker as if a turbine was spooling down until it ultimately stops. The researchers were able to take this data and extract remnants of memories from the deceased patients in the operating room. They did this by comparing the recorded data of the dead patients with the patients that didn't die as well as new patients whom they questioned and surveyed after surgery. What they found was that the brain patterns recorded by patients recalling the operating room matched closely the brain patterns recorded in the people who died up to 20 minutes after death. This research along with many others has aided in doctors having a better understanding of what officially classes a dead person so they can know when to stop trying to revive and more importantly when not to give up. These findings and research were being talked about at the time on the news and stuff so I have a feeling Moffat might have been inspired by it to write it into this episode. This is the reason I love Moffat's writing and am inspired all the time to be as good a writer as he is. Because like him, I am fascinated but science and knowledge in all kinds of areas that I like to use to inspire my stories and writing. His writing is brilliant and I'm excited for you to see his time as show runner :D

"Where am I in the future?"
This moment used to make me sad and winsome, which was the original intent of the scene. With current Dr. Who, now it just makes me sneer in derision.
The library right at the beginning was Swansea library in South Wales. Sadly it doesn't exist as a library anymore it's been turned into student accommodation, it was lovely inside. This two-parter is one of my favourites.
Donna really is the best companion.
This two-parter is my second favorite story in the whole series. Such a great two episodes.
A new fear unlocked - what a lovely phrase. I was so excited when I saw what episode you were watching and I'm as excited as you are Jules to see you watch the next episode.
🥰🥰 thank you!! I hope you have a lovely day!
_Maybe_ my favourite two-parter. It's got a great monster, a really fun sci-fi premise and of course, River Song. There's also that frisson of melancholy under all the funny and flirty and running that marks the best 'Doctor Who' episodes IMO. Plus, it's a story about stories and i'm a sucker for those.
I love this episode! It has some great syfy concepts. I remember when I first say this episode. I was so confused.
There is a making of for this episode that shows how the actors in suits had to learn to walk as though they were overtaken

@@julesreacts Gotcha!
An absolutely fantastic setup for one of my favourite Moffat two parters.
That I'm reluctant to say more about because the things that I love about this one come in the second part.
Oh River Song just you wait
David Tennet and Catherine Tate did a live play of much ado about nothing in 2011 that had a scene similar to 6:50. their charaters Benedick and Beatrice were reading letters they send to each other only to crumble the paper and toss it behind them. Both scene were hilarious.
Can you imagine the massacre when the Vashta woke up? Suddenly people are evaporating as the shadows engulf millions of people across the planet? And only 4022 people were saved.
OMG. Here we go Jules. Such a brilliant episode. I seem to be saying that a lot this series.

@@julesreacts yh the weeping angels are in the same league
I’m not afraid of the dark, I’m afraid of things in the dark. Or so I once was. One of the negative/positive aspects of an over active imagination. My brain would fathom all the foulest things in the dark, but then I learned or trained myself to think that I could be completely wrong and there could be awesome things in the dark too. Much like life in the deepest depths of the ocean, there are what could be classically called monsters, but there is also such fantastic amazing examples of life, and the kicker is they are often the same creature or plant. Thinking on that was something that really took away my apprehension over what may lurk in the shadows.
In any case yeah, the fear of the dark is primal. Probably why fire was such a big deal. Two of the greatest and earliest inventions by man, fire and comedy and I’m fairly certain that comedy must have had come first. I am getting off on a tangent, but you know me Jules, I do that.
Anyway, love this two parter, it’s got just the right amount of fear and pathos, and a tiny bit of humour. the first part of it sent me on a quest to find a journal not unlike River’s TARDIS themed one, I am sad to say while have seen many that are close, I have never found any that are perfect, at least, not within my price range.
A TARDIS journal would be amazing. It was so perfect looking, too. I admire the people who have the talent to make those sorts of props, and make them just so PERFECTLY worn that it's delightful to behold. It really is an art!
I actually love the thought of there being awesome things in the dark, too. I don't know if it will work to make me feel better, but let's hope 🤣
Prop recreation artists are insanely talented, especially those who also employ their talents to cosplay. I’ve seen some cosplays based on a single episode of a show where the character wore an outfit only once, and from freeze framing the pictures of it seen on tv, fully recreated it down to the smallest details with their own improv on details not seen, but fitting them together beautifully.
One of my favourite stories, absolutely stellar writing and suspense in this one and the next part is no different! This episode until the end of series 4 is my favourite run of television ever!!!
THANKS for this!!! Really enjoying your S4 reviews!!!!
oh dear! now you have to get (next part) 4x09 "forest of the dead" to continue..

“Whatever happened to her has aged her” oh no dear
Also did you notice: The Doctor programmed the TARDIS to send Donna home after five hours, a call back to Rose having to wait five hours for the doctor to return from France.
Oh wow, I didn't notice that connection!
Silence in the library and Forest of the Dead are some of Moffats best episodes, and River is such a genius character who always seems three steps ahead of the doctor and the audience.
First timing watching it thought river's eyes that first met had me in tears
