    I have a 1990 Honda Civic DX Hatchback, original tires were 175x70x13, new rim and tires are 195x50x15. My mechanic kept telling me my speed was off, but thanks to you and Sharing this tool, I can now prove that my cars tire revolutions are just off by 1/10. Thanks again for this calculator, I have been looking for something like this for a while.

    You got me in trouble, my fiancé used the calculator and figured out I've probably been going 10 over everywhere with my jeep. I think rough country makes a Speedometer gear that you can swap out if you know your gear ratio.

    Let's of free time size calculator apps you can download. Also many wheel offset calculators available of you want to change wheel sizes and offsets.
    On most vehicles it's suggested you stay within a 3% window when changing tire size. Anything more can foul the ABS systems and antilock brakes and vehicle stability control a d traction control. All of those features use wheel speed and detect slipping.
    Also in your case an almost 10% larger tires effectively results in a 10% higher gear ratio. It would be equivalent as going from a 3.55 axle ratio down to a 3.27 ratio.

    I changed out the little plastic speedometer gear in the transfer case. Look up Novak's color coded jeep speedometer gear chart. All you need to know is your differential gear ratio and tire size. My 5.9 ZJ has a 3.73 differential. It's got 265X75R16 tires; which calculates into 32 inch tires. So, I got a Black 32 tooth gear. There is a minor trick to knowing how to reinstall it and there are videos that show that. My speedometer now reads about 2.5 mph higher than I'm actually going; and, as my tires wear down, it should go to 3 or even 3.5 mph higher or more. Hindsight, I would recommend the next size smaller; because, apparently, this chart assumes you want to read a number higher than you're actually going and it doesn't factor in tire wear.

    • @JeepSolid
      @JeepSolid  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep! You're foreshadowing my future video ;) haha... How to fix speedometer.... 👍 Thanks for feedback on how yours went. Good info!

    • @301steady
      @301steady 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I wish I had known this stuff before I did mine. I was thinking of making a video on it; because, I have yet to see a video that takes you thru the entire process, from the chart, to the purchase, to removing the old one, reinstalling the new one; where, you have to rotate the locking bracket; and, then what actually happens out on the road. I've used my Garmin GPS and city mph signs that tell me how fast I'm going and that's how I know, I'm not going as fast as my speedometer says. I have a few videos you can see, all posted in the last 4 months. I've learned a lot, a lot, a lot. Way more than half I had to learn the hard way. Still learning.

  • @dystopian_20
    @dystopian_20 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Ok so if I take a truck with a 30” tire already on it and that tire rotates 622 times in a mile.
    That same truck I put on 50” tire that rotates 404 times a mile.
    But of course because the bigger tire has a bigger diameter, the engine struggles and the Speedo is wrong.
    What if I put on portal axles with a low gear ratio to counteract this?
    Then my speedo is correct and my engine has the same mechanical advantage with the 50” as it did with the 30”.
    Yes I know the 05” will be heavier and cause the engine to struggle more, but I’m ignoring that for the time being.
    What do y’all think?

  • @DivergentDroid

  • @Sulimankhayyat
    @Sulimankhayyat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Doesn't that depend on where your speed sensor is located ?

    • @jacoblami1731
      @jacoblami1731 ปีที่แล้ว

      Assuming your gearing is still stock and your wheel speed sensor isn't located on the inside of your tires toward the middle I don't see how that would work. If you change the tire it's the final moving component of your driveline.
      Just think:
      engine - torque converter - transmission - driveshaft - transfer case (may vary depending on vehicle) - differential - axel - hub - rim - tire
      If the speed sensor is anywhere left in this chain to the tire there's just no way for it to take into account the modification that's been made without being modified or recalibrated to compensate.

      It’s the way the speedometer reads. All your car knows is the tire made 1 rotation. 1 tire rotation travels further with a larger tire. If you put tiny tiny Oreo tires on your car, you car would think it was flying down the road because the tires turning like mad! But you’d be covering very little ground.

      It gives you a false reading when you put a big tire on it's gonna say your going faster but you're not so you have to correct it by putting the speed senser in it
