    Would like to see more comprehensive video on tasker sequencing in integration with smartthings and home assistant. I think nfc tags are underrated for routines and automation. A blackout (turn Everything off) routine for the spouse that doesn't like talking to a voice assistant is convenient. Near the garage and front door.
    I know these videos probably take longer than people realize because of how intricate the information is. I love your work.

    We’re on tank water being rural and I’ve an nfc next to the tank opening. I measure water levels a couple of time a week in summer with a tape measure and so I’ve set up an iOS shortcut that takes the tape measure distance from rim of tank to top of water, takes it away from the total depth of the tank then calculates the current capacity along with a menu note and date time stamp in a “drafts” file and also txts the result to a list of adults in the household to notify them of current levels which acts as a reminder if we need to conserve water / get a water delivery (if rain isn’t forecast in the near future). The drafts file allows me to graph water usage against another shortcut added via “charty” to display water utilisation over time. Works well 🎉👍. Btw keep up the great work Reid, love the videos. ✅

    I just bought a bunch of tags due to Home Assistant integration so your video was right on time. Also it's a good excuse to start playing with Tasker again.
    Ps. Since you mentioned outdoor buttons, I am really impressed with the Xiaomi Aqara button. They are not supposed to be waterproof or anything but I use one as a wireless doorbell in Home Assistant. The button is exposed outside the British weather. Six months now and still going strong!

    @Smart Home Solver - there is actual a way to play spotify using NFC tags and the shortcuts app on an iPhone.
    It is a bit of a workaround but it works though:
    How am I gonna do it?
    - copy e.g. the URL of a certain playlist or song
    - go to your shortcuts app
    - add action: Open URL (paste your Spotify Link into it)
    - ad action: play/pause on iPhone
    more advanced:
    (add more actions to the steps above)
    - add action: set volume 0
    - add action: set playback destination to: Living Room (or any other airplay devices)
    - add action: set volume 30
    The reason why I first change the volume to 0 and then back up to 30 is that while running the automation, your iPhone plays spotify for a second or two till it changes its playback destination. In order to simply avoid that, I first "mute" the sound on my iphone to then bring it back up again, but then in the living room.

    • @unclekevo3864
      @unclekevo3864 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only issue with your method is the play/pause command doesn't work for the playlist URL, but only plays/pauses the last played song/playlist. It's an issue with iOS though, not your fault. Thanks for the tips!

    • @sjacobsen
      @sjacobsen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Other advanced work around would be to expose your own personal API endpoint that scrapes an authenticated spotify session and performs actions for you. I have a few automations setup myself already and it works great!

    Greta video! I love NFC tags, and you provided some great automation ideas. I didn't know they made ones that work outside and are waterproof, that is awesome. I use the date/time conditional automation a lot so if the time is before 8pm it runs certain actions and anytime after 8pm it runs my goodnight scene. Nfc tags are super powerful and affordable!

    Reed, this is great, thank you! I have a SmartThings home setup with all rooms having smart lights/motion sensors triggered through WebCore and Alexa routines. But there are times that the motion sensor isn't the ideal trigger and I do not want to talk to Alexa.. or Alexa is not in that particular spot in my home. These NFC tags will solve that - Thank you for the WebCore & IOS Shortcuts walk through. I can likely eliminate the Zigbee buttons I have as well! Looking for more automations with these NGC tags, but my favorite is probably Smarttings Virtual Switches to play Alexa Music throughout the house.

    Great video! For iOS users that prefer Home Assistant over shortcuts, do you know if there is a way to tap a programmed NFC tag and not have to then tap the “open NFC tag with Home Assistant” notification? Looks like Android will let you tap a tag without having to confirm a message on-screen. Thanks!

  • @DIYtechie
    @DIYtechie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great video 👍🏻 I’m also a massive fan of iOS Shortcuts.
    Bought a bunch of NFC stickers when support for these were announced last year, but found that it’s just as easy for me to use the shortcuts from the lock screen widgets. Made some pretty advanced ones that I also show on my channel with menus and stuff.
    While it’s a shame that the phone has to he activated (screen turned on) for the NFC automations to trigger, it’s still a little better than the bluetooth, location and SSID activated ones that cannot run without needing confirmation each time. I wish Shortcuts were available from CarPlay (they were for a short while when they were just introduced). It’s one of those places where they would really be helpful.
    I agree with your philosophy of “the less I have to open an app, the better” 😊

  • @cjramseyer
    @cjramseyer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The problem with setting up via your phone, is that you have to setup each and every device. This is VERY time consuming, and when you get a new phone, you have to do this all over again. The better way is to keep the tags and automations centrally located on a smart home hub. Sure it's cool that certain versions of phones can store these, but by using one of the various hubs that are out there, one tag can be setup one time along with the automations. Then the user can give access to the people or devices that they want to.

    I really enjoy your videos. Always informative and presented at a level that's comprehensive yet understandable.
    I'm all in on Google and want to control some of my Google Home routines using NFC tags. Ideally, I'd like to be able to tap an NFC tag and have it run a Google home routine. If this isn't possible, I'd like to be able to issue a series of commands in a linear fashion that Google would be able to interpret, ie. "Turn off kitchen", "Set dining room main light to 30%", "Set living room lights to blue", etc.
    I tried Home Assistant, but the idea of always having a VM running is annoying. Is there anything you can suggest?

    • @LadyRenira
      @LadyRenira 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can set up a virtual switch (usually it's a combo motion or contact sensor + switch in various hubs) that ports into Alexa, which you can then use as a trigger for an Alexa routine. Essentially, the NFC would trigger the virtual device, which would show as active or connected, etc. in Alexa, then prompt the routine. Make sure to have it auto-off either within Alexa or in the hub in the device settings so that it "resets" (best for a motion sensor + switch) unless you're looking for something to be triggered 2-directional (better for a contact sensor + switch).

    This is going to be so awesome for my smart lock!!! My smart lock automatic lock has not worked out for me at all. It takes to long to lock and I'm not leaving my door until I hear it lock. I have it set to auto unlock with the app when I get home. And then the auto lock locks the door before I can get to the door. So ultimately I've had to wait until it locks before I leave and upon returning home have had to unlock my phone then open my smart lock app which then finally unlocks the door. I've been thinking it's just faster to use my keys. Until I saw this video. I do hope this will work with my smart lock. I have the WiFi August smart lock. If so, you just made my day. 😁

    Great video, but how do you share the automations? If I set them up on my iPhone, how do I share the with another device or do you have to go through and create them all again on the other device?

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the iOS shortcuts app you can share shortcuts that aren’t in a personal automation. So what you could do is crest the shortcuts and share those with the other phone. Then in the personal automation use the shortcut as an action. I plan on showing this in a future video.

    Great Video and very informative.! I had a query with using IFTTT. Correct me if I am wrong, after I use Webhooks Trigger command on IFTTT and paste the link on Tasker, do i need to go back to IFTTT app and select then "THEN" command to trigger my SmartHome devices? Where do I select which smart device to run? once I tap the NFC tag

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes in IFTTT you add the THEN to control the smart device. IFTTT works as the middle man between the nfc tag and the smart device. Sorry that wasn’t more clear in the video.

    Thank you very much for your great videos. I'm fan of them and applying some of them at my home. I couldn't find how to integrate Alexa with nfc. I'd like her "welcomes" me when I enter my office with NFC tag like you. What should I do with home assistant and IOS? :)

    • @SmartHomeSolver

      I’m using the tag to turn on a “simulated Alexa switch” in SmartThings. That triggers an Alexa routine to run. I’m not well versed in home assistant so I don’t know how to trigger an Alexa routine from it.

    Would it be possible to trigger reminders with these NFC tags? For example, if I put one on the furnace, that I scan when changing the filter, could that trigger a reminder 3 months after scanning the tag to remind me to change the furnace filter again?

  • @PPursley
    @PPursley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you have to have your phone unlocked or be on an app or anything to scan the tag? (iPhone)

    Hey Reed, after your last video, I invested in some NFC tags, and tore through the internet on how to set it up, after combining 3-6 videos, I figured it out for Android. This is a great summary of them, that it easy to understand. However, I'm wondering if it is possible to do the door opening thing for Android with IFTTT or some other work around? Keep in mind I'm from Canada so SmartThings is not supported.

    • @SmartHomeSolver
      @SmartHomeSolver  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Brendan. If the lock is compatible with IFTTT then it might work. I just looked and the Schlage Encode wasn’t available on IFTTT but the Connect could be unlocked with SmartThings using IFTTT . I know you don’t have SmartThings but I think it will depend on the lock.

    Hey Reed I have been trying to figure out how to create a log to keep track of if I took my medicine or not. I found a cool app called MacroDroid that is pretty sweet. It is a lot more intuitive than Tasker for Android. You should try doing a video on that app if you ever do a part 2 for NFC tags.

    Great video. I have watched it several times. Can you help us find a way to bridge iOS to NFC tags and run Alexa routines? Please? Maybe put this on your to-do lists? I think there once was an iOS app called Automator, but it appears to no longer be in the app store. Surely would like to use NFC tags with some of my 100+ routines. And thanks for great advice and videos, Reed.

    • @GreeniusGenius
      @GreeniusGenius 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Automator is / was a macOS app, which was superseded by Shortcuts anyways with macOS Monterey.
      You could try IFTTT, or you could use a Raspberry Pi and Homebridge to link your non-HomeKit smart home devices to HomeKit.
