      Not sure if you are a Google home owner, but they have a big set of "family bells" around this that we have been loving. We also use routines for the all lights off thing he did by saying goodnight, and it only works with our voice.

    Hi Reid, I’m also a HA user, and I have Light Switches that I flashed with ESPHome, on the light switches I set it up so that the light only toggles when the the switch if pressed for less then 1 second (locally controlled on the Sonoff) I then have a separate automation in HA that checks if the button is pressed for longer. In the master bedroom this “long press” is used for switching off all the lights in the house. We haven’t switched off the lights manually or with a app for more than a year!
    I also use this function in other rooms to open blinds, acknowledge a “status light” etc..
    Thanks for the great videos! I have been watching them for a while now and I love you ideas for all kinds of automations!

    Solution 1: I would have considered a pressure sensor in the piano stool as well. Not playing for 5 minutes is quite common when studying music or talking whilst at the piano.
    Detecting if someone is sat at the piano is what you need.

    • @Geoff_W
      @Geoff_W 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Reed hates visable wires though. I'm not sure he would be down for a solution like that, and I'm not aware of any battery powered pressure sensors...could maybe run a Arduino with a rechargeable battery pack or something from inside the bench, but to hide the wires would be a lot of DIY and again...not something we have seen much from Reed on (which is good, I value the fact that he is lazy so he finds clever solutions for lazy people 🤣👍)

    • @mackelajt
      @mackelajt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Geoff_W I made my own pressure sensor for our bed that runs on battery, I had a water leak sensor to spare, which has the the electronics seperated from the water detecting part, meaning there is two wires coming out. Cut the wires off and purchased a pressure pad. Hooked it all up, when pressure is Put on the pad the circuit closes and "detects water". Some templating in HA and I have a bed occupancy sensor instead.

    I found your channel last Fall when I started on the smart home journey. Your videos have helped me so so much, but thats not the reason I’ve finally decided to comment. This comment is because tonight after almost a full year of smart home and home automation iterations, my wife asked me to set up an automation and Google routine for her! 🙌 Im sure you can relate. After all the mishaps and wrong verbal queues, lights automatically turning on at 6am on a Saturday morning, this feels like she is finally 100% on board with the smart home transition. Live the ideas you have here! I'll be attempting to migrate to Home Assistant, hopefully sooner than later.
    As for your "it's nicer outside than inside", I've got something setup that will text me when the temp has dropped enough outside to open the windows. Couple that with the automatic sliding door opener I bought to let the dogs out when no one is home, and a whole house fan system it almost achieves what you're looking for. Granted if I want windows open we have to do that manually, but with the sliding door opening, and the whole house fan kicking on when it's nice out, we manage to stay pretty comfortable.

    Lol, one of my main automations is for the piano lights too. I love your vibration sensor idea. What I ended up using was a radar presence sensor pointed at the bench, which turns on the lights as you sit at the bench.
    The problem with turning off the lights when done, is that sometimes someone will wander into the room while the piano is being played and sit on the couch and start reading, and it's no bueno to turn the lights out of them as soon as the first person is done playing. Still working through the best way to do that....

    This is a great video - very informative. I really like the personal touch of including family members and shots of your house.
    Regarding "NFC tag: lights off," it seems to me you already had the solution available without having to add additional hardware: "Alexa, turn off all lights." This way, you don't have to be standing in the vicinity of the NFC tag; it will work from wherever Alexa can hear you. You could go even one step further by creating an Alexa routine to trigger the event with something like, "Alexa, bedtime."

I am using the brilliant system from brilliant Tech for my switches and I have 2 control pads. They work awesome and control my sonos and integrate with ring video cams. The switches can do motion sensing and you can also assign a scene to any switch using a double tap created in the brilliant environment. Well I created a scene this morning that turns off all the light in the bedroom, bathroom and close and stops the music by double tapping one of the switches. This is a routine when leaving the upstairs for work. My wife already left for work at the time so I can't wait to show her to see what she says! I know we all have to remember the wife factor

    We set up a "School Day Routine" in HA using Time triggers and Trigger ID's.
    At 6:30am, the LED strips around our kids' beds turn from 1% Red to 5% Green. They know it's okay for them to get up and take a shower.
    At 7:00, the lights in their bedroom turn Soft White at 20%.
    At 7:10, their lights turn to 50%, and their Echo says, "It's time to start the day". I'm using TTS in HA to broadcast.
    The morning goes on with some other reminders (medicine, tea, etc.), and at 7:40 all the light in the house turn on and the Echos broadcast a "5 minute warning." At 7:45 the "Get to the Car" message is given. At 7:50 all thd lights turn off.
    In addition to the Time Trigger and Weekday Condition, I added a Helper called "School Routine" and use that as an additional Condition. If the kids are on Spring Break or have a day off, I can paused/cancel the Automation at any point.

    Ha! I actually have a 'brush your teeth' reminder already 🤣. I also have a button I made out of an M5 Atom Matrix (5x5 pixel screen built into a button, with wifi) and it shows a countdown timer while I brush my teeth. Pressing the button also flips a switch in home assistant, and if that switch isn't flipped before I turn off the lights while in bed (pressure sensor for bed) my Google assistant tells me I forgot to brush my teeth. It's been a great reminder since it's a habit I just struggle to keep up with otherwise. I could see myself doing something similar when I have kids.

    I love your idea on the Piano practice reminder. Do you need to have the Home Assistant program to create the automations?

    I love your channel and really likes how you do it and laughs a lot with your sketchs family. You give me a idea, but is complex about how can i open my outside automatic gate for car and my dogs doesn't escape 😮‍💨. I'm thinking of produce a sound that they have previously associated with a prize they go to the inside, the detector sensor works, free a snacks and some (i'm thinking yet) close the dog door and later open the outside gate (this is easy with a broadlink) to get car inside my property.
    I need this, because i can't use my automatic door because i must first lock them and later back to the car and open the gate (and automatic door practically hasn't sense if i must go down).
    Anyway thanks a lo for you channel.

    Thanks, great video. Seeking approval of the spouse or family is a must indeed.
    I've taken the idea of NFC tags, and already implemented a couple Automation around the house based on tag, but you mentioned in the video you restricted some automation to only allow your wife to scan the tag (to avoid kids abusing it). How do you recognize gnose who scanned the tag in an automation? Or how do you limit it to only one user/phone? I can't find any such trivial condition. Thanks in advance.

    Great vid (like all your vids). I alway find new ideas or helps to spark other ideas. Question - The new Smartthings contact sensor....where are you still finding them? Are you using the new Aeotec version?

    Could you use temperature sensors to help you to decide whether to open the door? If so, which ones would you recommend?

    Love the channel. Can you offer some suggestions for how to make the smart home “wife friendly” regarding interaction with the home? We struggle from our setup not recognizing us as individuals. Her voice/my voice. Geofence conflicts. Maybe a great video idea to present her side of the experience.

    For light switching off at night I use my ring alarm sensor. We always arm the house right before we go to sleep and that turns off all the lights

    Loving the home automations, my partner is too paranoid for us to have very many but oh well. I am trying to set up on for my workshop so when I arrive the door unlocks, I have a TTLock door handle that works via bluetooth and with rfid cards, and google home via a extra piece,do you happen to know if there is a way to automate that so It can just unlock when I arrive.

    I looked at your website for your different automations…was trying to setup the Robovac one. Wasn’t sure where i should setup the YAML file you mention after creating the helper. Would you have a more step by step instructions? Thanks!

    The button for kids on the toilet was good. Sadly we dont have Alexa here in Norway. Meaning that automation would require a little more setting up at my house, running HA, hue, smartthings and google home so got a couple of options going but not been able to set it all up yet as I`m very new to HA.

    Read your blog on how to get Luna's timestamp working, I got it time stamping, great! just can't get it to show me the "time" ago...
    Kinda changed it up a little bit and using this to show me when the main doors to the house were opened as opposed to having to click through for "more info" for more of a quick glance.

    This is a bit older video, but you having the Broadlink Wi-Fi smart button in it reminded me to ask. I have one, but I can't get it to stay connected. My router, an Asus RT-AX86U, the remote button, and the S3 hub are all within 10 feet of each other even. I tried new batteries, moving the hub closer to where the button mainly gets used, and closer to the router. If you see this comment, does anyone have any suggestions? I really like the thing. When it works, it's awesome. Unfortunately, I spend more time reconnecting it than using it.

    The open window automation could also have a condition so it does not run if it is below a certain temperature outside too .
    Some great automation ideas here though. I should ask my partner too. Sometimes I am too geeky to think of normal things :)

    Hey Reed, thanks for all the videos. One questions: rarely I go to bed early, but when I do I want all the routines to stop when I run the Good night routine. Is there a way for a routine to overrule the rest of the routines? Kind of like: If routine A is running> then do not run routine B and C. Thanks!

    • @DumbMuscle
      @DumbMuscle 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You've probably solved this by now, but for anyone else that comes across this:
      Make a toggle helper, e.g. "Good Night Activated".
      In your Good Night routine, set that toggle helper to "on"
      In your other automations you want to prevent after you've gone to bed, add a condition of "state" "Good Night Activated" "off"
      Add another automation to turn the toggle off at an appropriate time (or add it to your "getting up" automation, if you have one)
