- This video will show you how to disassemble & reassemble a Lumix camera. Including CCD senors, LCD displays, lens units, motors and circuit boards on ZS6, ZS7, TZ9, TZ10 and possibly other models. This video does not show you how to determine what may be wrong with your camera.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this great instructional video! I had a bad scratch on the lens of my Lumix ZS7, but all else was in excellent shape. But it also was a nice blue color and I wanted to save that. I found a used ZS7 (black) that had a good lens but a bit of a smudge that showed only on the display panel, for just $20 on Amazon. So I followed your video and swapped the whole lens unit. Now my blue ZS7 is working great--no scratch, no smudge, just as I got it new several years ago. You were so easy to follow--every move well shown and explained. At first I used a small flat screwdriver as you suggested but I also have a tiny Phillips head screwdriver that worked better, once I magnetized it by rubbing it on a magnet. Thank you very much.

First off, thank you for being so good at describing in detail about your procedure. I was able to completely disassemble and clean my lenses in my Panasonic DMC-ZS5. I use this camera in a underwater housing for trips to USVI and I was glad to come across Roberts video. This saved me from buying a older used camera that I may not have any confidence in its function. Cheers Robert where ever you may be.

Wow,,,thanks so much for this. You saved me having to buy a new camera. My ZS7 had a tiny amount of dirt on one of the internal lens, which was showing up big right in the center of photos, and after following these instructions, and then the one for cleaning the lens, it is back to taking exquisite pictures. I've been happy with this camera for so many years, and didn't really want to buy another one or pay panasonic $$$ to clean it. Although, I was a bit nervous, looking at all the parts and screws when it was taken apart, I wondered how hard it would be to put it all back together, but your instructions were clear and accurate. Thank you.

I ran across this video just after my zs19 tripped out on me (two months after warranty) and decided to tear apart my zs7 following your well made, easy to follow video. Never thought about tearing it apart, I was just mad I lost another lumix. Now I have a perfect working zs7, thinking about tearing apart the zs19 now. $180 to fix my camera!!! To hell with that I will fix my own!!! Thank you for making my day!!
This helped me so much in repairing my trusty TZ7 (ZS3). The zoom control had become erratic, it would zoom in but trying to zoom out sometimes it would hang, sometimes zoom in again, very frustrating.
Using this video as a guide (the cameras are slightly different in build) I stripped it down and cleaned the zoom control using switch cleaner, put it back together and it works seamlessly. As it happens I didn't have to strip it completely down to get access to the area that needed the spray, but if it needs doing again I'll know to only take off the front cover.

Thanks Robert! My TZ10 had one of the small spring that close the lens shutter broken. Had to buy a new main lens body on eBay, but thanks to this video I was able to replace it myself (and costed me probably a tenth of a repair service)!!! All the best!

Between this video and the video on the lens video we did it! The lens is a bit different but we got through it and now it is so clean! My camera is back in business and I dont have to buy a new one. Thank you Robert, just dropped my DMC-ZS10 breaking the rear panel, I was about to buy another from Amazon and saw your fix, so living in Cyprus these parts are just not available but saw the replacement panel (LCD touch screen) on EBbay and sent for the replacement part from the US, I will attempt to fix the problem when it arrives, apart from a seriously cracked screen, the camera still working just fine, great little camera..again thanks for the video!! Thank you so, so much!!! Hadn't used the camera in a couple of years and when I took it out today, all pictures would come out with black dots just like on the screen. Scary procedure later, it is back to perfect. I really appreciate you taking the time to post this. Turns out there was dust on the CCD. And the screws were much much smaller in real life than in the video.

Thanks for this. It could just save my bacon. A glass of beer was spilled when camera was almost new. (By a sober diner at a wonderful Paraguayan Restaurant). Some controls now stick. I'll bet cleaning them up will make a difference. Worth a try. Repair shop won't open the camera for less than $150.
Robert - fantastic video. I was going to send mine to Panasonic if the cost was under $100. as it turns out they want $189. I'll buy a new camera for that price - and undoubtedly not a Panasonic. You gave me the confidence to change the LCD out myself - thanks!
Excellent tutorial mate! 👏 After a long time not using my TZ10 I discovered that there are many droplets stains over the first internal lens, the one just behind the external one. This and the next related one vidros will be of huge help for me in order to clean the lens. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge! 🙏

Your video made it simple to remove and fix the SD card reader in my new , secondhand ZS7. BTW, the screwdriver I used was a Philips #000 bit from the iFixit driver set. Perfect fit. I have decided to buy up broken cameras, and to fix them for fun ( profit, perhaps unlikely).

my camera won't recognize any sd cards - how did you fix your sd card reader? did you just replace that part? if so where did you get the part?
I like these strip down videos! I have had the zs3, zs7 and the zs30. I'll watch the rest and am ready to change the LC display which I have cracked.

thanks..I only had to do an LCD replacement, on a ZS20, which is similar, and I wouldn't have had the nerve to try it without seeing your video. I was surprised it worked, as those tiny flat cables don't seem to go into the female parts very far and I was afraid to push them with anything that could cut the delicate little things. But, it worked putting them in what didn't seem enough. Thanks again.

Thanks much for the excellent video. I dropped my ZS7 face-down in the sand and want to attempt cleaning it, as it takes much better quality photos than my ZS19, and allows more user control over the results. Your video will help a lot.
Brilliant. I thought it might have been a crack in the AA filter but it was not straight like a typical glass crack would be. The wife wanted to go out ASAP and buy a new one. I figured it was fuzz. I used your video and found out - it was fuzz. A quick swipe with a lens brush. Done. Thank you.

Great video.I love my ZS7 but it got wet scuba diving on vacation.Everything worked except the lcd. I ordered one from hong kong and swapped it out but it didnt come with the backlight.The display still didn't work so it was probably the backlight or possibly the main board. Instead of buying another backlight I got a used for parts complete camera with some dust on the inner lens. I just swapped backs and my original is like new again. I also have a spare for any other parts in the future.

Robert You ar my hero! Thanks to you and "RSelectro" i dared to fix my DMC FX55 it was similar from outside to he DMC ZX! but unfortunetely other inside. I could not get into lans... (I was afraid to unplug tape because she wos in hart to access spot for me) ...but i played screwdriver and finger with gears i wos fortunatle enought to repair lans problem.
I thank you for what you ara doing share experiances i was very sad when my old camera has stopped working. In my tawn nobody fixes old things :( They said better to buy a new Camera (I have no money for this) i wos looking for healp and i found your videos I am naw happy with my fix camera THX agan

Thank you for the video. I fixed my dust problem on my DMC-ZS7 with no difficulty. I used a brand new phillips #000 screwdriver ($5,95 + tax) and it worked great. Not sure Panasonic does the job for that price.

Hi Rosemarie. I've had the same thing happen. If the black bar didn't break and it just came off you can put it back on. I used a lighted magnifier to see it better and a small screwdriver to slide it back over the tiny little pins that it rests on. The side of the black bar that is flat goes on first. The other side has a little bump and it faces away from the white socket that the flat ribbon goes in. If you have problems I can make a video that shows how. It would take a few days to make it

Great need more Panasonic work
Cross head screws on Japanese cameras and electronics (and motorbikes) are very often JIS format rather than Philips. I recently bought a set from Amazon and they made a world of a difference. Vessel TD-56 kit is the one I got.
Yes, Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) screw heads do look a lot like a Phillips. They generally have a small raised dot on the on the top to identify them. I haven't run into any on the cameras that I have worked on. But since a JIS will work on a Phillips head screw (but not visa-versa) it would be good to have a set of JIS tips handy just in case. That could be the ticket to getting that suborn Phillips head screw out. I had no clue they used them on motorbikes at all. That's interesting. It must be for a higher torque on them or something, since a Phillips head is designed to cam out before it can over tighten the screw. Thanks for the info Empty One! I'll check out that kit too.
The 00 size JIS seems a lot better fit on my TZ65 than a Philips, so I'm convinced that's what the little screws are ;) I also forgot to thank you for giving me the courage to open mine up to have a successful attempt to fix the zoom switch as it was intermittently zooming out instead of in.

Great video, I was looking for a fix for a TZ2 with purple sensor bleeding. With your video I'll be up to taking it apart. Its seems to be a time dependent fault (temperature or charge leakage of the photo sensors) in that you get about 3 sec to take your picture before the images "bleeds" away and is also recorded that way. Thanks for sharing the instructions. I have fixed a Canon EFS 17-85mm IS lens with cracked flex cable before and provided pics of that but I should do a you tube video too! regards Barry

Hi, my camera suddenly started giving me huge areas of purple underneath anywhere where the sky is over a certain brightness. I guess it's a photo sensor problem. Now do I replace the whole lens unit or which part is best to try? I've done some googling around trying to find a fix for this and so far - no dice!

Hi tpaulino. Boy that's a tough one. There is most likely something down inside that is preventing the SD card from being pushed in far enough to release the lock. I've had SD cards that have had the small plastic pieces which separate the electrical connections break off and then get jammed in down there. But, it never prevented me from removing the card. Trying to pull out the card without first releasing the lock could cause a lot of damage to the camera. I would suggest disassembling the camera and removing the SD card holder from it. Then you might be able to see what the problem is a little easier. You can see where the SD card being removed in the video at 10minutes 20seconds. I'm sorry I can't be more help to you on this. Hello Robert :) That is quite alright... my cam is about 6 years old...soooo I am not really surprised...lol I still havent decided if I want to tackle it or live with it for now.. I cant complain .. The cam has taken thousands of pics...and it still works... so I might leave be for now.. I have a Nikon on my list that I would like to buy on my bucket list...sooo maybe then I will tackle it... If I blow this one up trying to fix it... then I will be jonesing lol to take pics with no cam... maybe like you I can come across a model on e-bay to experiment with first :) Thank you again for such a speedy reply

Hello Robert, I have a Lumix ZS 30 on which the display has abruptly stopped working. Do you know if a replacement display for the Zs 20 would work in this camera has not been able to find one identified for the Zs 30? also is it possible that one of the two flat cables that connect this display to the circuitboard have simply come loose and caused this problem? So if I were brave enough to open up the case, simply resetting the cables would resolve the problem? Thanks for your time.

I recorded the video with a Lumix ZS7. Then I put it together with a program called Power Director. It's a great little program for stuff like this.

The black tab that you have to push down onto the ribbon broke off! Now I can't get any pressure onto the ribbon. Any suggestions????

Hi. I'm unable to find a replacement LCD screen for the Leica V-Lux 20 either. I really doubt that the LCD screen from a TZ10 will work on it.

Seems like I destroyed mine. I was able to clean something out of the back of the lens just great. Now the lens extends, but the screen is black and my computer doesn't recognize it. Bent the two screen connections a little trying to plug them in...don't know if that is enough to ruin them or not. But in that case, why would plugging in the usb get me nothing?
Check the smaller of the two flat ribbon cables. I've had the black screen problem before, and it was always that the small cable was at just a slight angle in the connector and not straight. That cable is for the back light circuit of the LCD screen. Not sure why that would effect the communication with your computer via the USB cable though..

However I may have damaged the little black circuit board connectors - don't suppose those can be bought ? Or will I have to try and buy another camera for spare parts ? Hi Rab. I really doubt that you will find just the connectors to replace. Plus, it might be pretty tough replacing them even if you did. You will most likely need to replace the main circuit board. I did look on ebay, but couldn't find anyone currently selling a main board for a TZ10 though. But, that can change daily. When looking for parts for you camera you can also use parts from a TZ9, which is exactly the same as your TZ10, but without the GPS. Another one that you can use for some parts is a ZS7, which is just the North American version of your TZ10. The difference between the two is the video output, which is NTSC for the ZS7 and PAL for your TZ10. So because of that, a main circuit board from a ZS7 won't work for you. But all of the other parts like the LCD, back light, lens, etc., will work on your TZ10. Sorry I can't be more help Rab. Good luck with it!

Terence, I would guess that it's probably the focus motor, which is on the lens unit, and it's either bad or stuck. The focus motor is the small motor inside the lens unit that has a long threaded shaft with a white plastic tab on it and also a small plastic unit that holds a lens. Both of these run up and down the threads on the shaft as the motor turns. A lot of times the motor itself is fine, but the white plastic tab gets stuck. I don't show removing the focus motor in the video, but it's easy to do. There is one screw on the motor to remove and the entire unit will come out. The plastic unit that holds the lens is spring loaded, so remove it slowly. Check to see if the white plastic tab is stuck. If you can loosen it and it seems fine then you may want to add a very small amount of lubrication to it before you put it back in, to help it operate properly. I have been getting a lot of inquiries regarding this problem so I will be making a video on how to remove and repair the focus motor in the near future. Hi Jim. Sorry about that. I know that I kind of went over that part pretty fast in the video and I didn't really explain it at all. The part of the video that shows reconnecting the two flat ribbon cables, which you've probably already seen, is 15 minutes and 56 seconds in. To reattach the two flat ribbon cables you will need to lay them flat in front of the connector and then slide them in. I found that I can slide them in easier when I have latex gloves on. But you could also use the eraser on a pencil if you you are unable to do it with your finger. You will need to make sure that the black tab is up before trying to slide the ribbon in though. Once the ribbon is in all the way then flip the black tab back down. I have had problems with the smaller flat ribbon cable when I don't have it completely straight in the connector. When that happens the LCD display will not come on. All you will have to do is to put a little pressure on it to straighten it out in the connector while the black tab is still down. Let me know if this helps you out Jim or if you run into any problems. -Bob

since you say you've owned many Lumex Cameras perhaps you can help me troubleshoot an issue I have with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR3. The zoom toggle and the mode dial are very hard to move. Niether move smoothly. What can be the cause and is it repairable? Thanks Kathy
Hi Kathy.
I haven't worked on a ZR3 before, but it doesn't look too much different from some of the other models I have worked on. My guess would be that sand or something gritty got under the controls. Or, something sugary was spilled on the two controls (and I have first hand experience of doing that!). I would probable tear it down far enough to remove the top control piece and then remove the two control knobs and clean under them. I haven't actually done that before, where I've removed the control knobs, but I can sure check it out to see what it will take. It might be a day or so before I will be able to do that though. I'll let you know what I find when I do.

I followed your repair I had to clean out the lens and it was a success but it didn't last that long... So recently I was about to record a TH-cam video with the Lumix but when I set the on it a tripod and started recording the video I noticed the video was giving this weird shaking effect in the video while the camera was focusing. Normally it would stop doing that for 4 seconds when the camera has it in focus but when zooming in while focusing it was doing it again it was even worse I could even hear the camera focusing quite loudly..
It sounds as if there is something out of align, or something broken if it is shaking that badly and also causing the motor to be that loud. Normally I would suspect that there is sand or dirt inside the small channels that are inside the plastic tube sections, but since you just tore it apart and cleaned it, that wouldn't be the case. Tearing it apart and cleaning everything again, in hopes that something was missed, is about the only suggestion that I have. Unfortunately, as you and I both know, that's a big job. Sorry I can't be more help.

Dear Rober, I have a Panasonic dmc-zs8 and when i inserted the sd card apparently it has stocked into the camera. I pressed in the midle of the card, but it does not want to go out. Will u pls help to to take out? ...thanks i am tpaulino

I wrote a month ago and am now trying (again). The lens is operational -- but there is no view in the viewfinder. I wasn't able to put the black bar back onto the little pins, but the ribbon seems to be tight anyway. Is this the missing link to no view in the viewfinder?? The black bar that I am talking about is the very last one you'd have to do before screwing the cover on again. Perhaps this isn't even the problem????? No view in the view finder.....

Rosemarie, I don't believe the ribbon will connect properly if the bar isn't on there. But, if we're lucky and it is making a good connection, there is one other thing that you could check. The small ribbon that goes to the LCD display sometimes appears to be connected properly even with the small bar is in the locked position, but the display still doesn't work. This happened to me many times. What I found that happens is that the ribbon is just slightly at an angle in the connector. All I've had to do is to unlock the bar, then straighten the ribbon just a little bit, and then re-lock the bar again. There have been times when the ribbon looks straight but it still wasn't making a good connection. I've never had that problem with the bigger ribbons, just the small one. Let me know if that helps at all.

Do you have any ideas or advise for excess camera noise during video? I use my zs30 in a marine case and recently hear an intermittent "grinding" sound besides my regulator bubbles. I love what this camera does and posted a few to TH-cam also. Thanks
Hi David. I just checked out your "Diving The Wrecks In The Keys" video. Holy smokes very impressive. A great video in both what you do as a scuba diver, and also in recording the video itself. In regards to the noise you are hearing, I did hear something "different" right at the 6:00 minute mark. Is that the noise that you are talking about? There are only a few things inside the camera lens that could make an audible sound. One being the main zoom motor, the focus motor, the shutter control and the image stabilization. I'm not familiar with working on the ZS30, but I"m guessing that it may something to do with the image stabilization. If it's similar to earlier models, the image stabilization is just a set of coils that magnetically float and maneuver a small lens. I don't know of any way to turn it off though, or why it would make noise only part of the time. Sorry I can't be of more help. I will do a little research on it. If I come up with anything I'll let you know. -Bob
Hi Robert, I have a TZ3 which I love but it has stopped working, dead as a do-do. I've tried a new battery and a new charger but no joy. I have read that this is a problem with the TZ3 and that there is a tiny lithium battery internally on the "top operation pcb" that sometimes dies and needs to be replaced. Is this difficult to access and do you have any videos on this? I'm desperate to fix this camera as I love it! Thanks, JT
halfpint2312 I have never repaired a TZ3, and I currently don't have one that I can check out.
But, after looking around I did find a repair manual for it on-line that does show how to tear it down and it also shows the location of the small battery. The manual also states that the battery "is a critical component". But I'm pretty sure you already knew that after two cameras!! :-)

Hi Robert, was cleaning my TZ10, and the two little flexible ribbons came adrift, the black connectors came off. I see that screen displays can be bought with the wider flexible connector attached. Hi Rab. For Lumix camera parts, many times I will buy broken cameras, or cameras listed as "not working, for parts only", on eBay. I have also purchased parts from vendors on eBay that sell new and used Lumix parts. Just curious though; are the black connectors that you're talking about the connectors on the circuit board that the flat ribbons go into? If it is, and the little black tab that flips up and down to lock the ribbon in place came off, then you can put it back on. I have had to do that a few times. It just takes a magnifying lens to see all of the little pins that the black tab goes over. And, in regard the LCD display screen, there are two parts to it that have flat ribbons connected to them. The larger flat ribbon controls the display unit itself, and the smaller ribbon is connected to the back light for illuminating the LCD display. The back light is a separate piece that is just snapped onto the back of LDC display unit. So, if the LCD display that you are looking at purchasing only has a large flat ribbon, then it doesn't have the back light connected to it. But, you can certainly use the back light from your original LCD display on the new one if you want. It's easy to take off and put back on. Hi Shaz. I don't see anything that shows that a ZS20 display will work in your ZS30. But a display for a TZ40, which is the European version of the ZS30, will work. I can only find one location that sells a replacement display that will work in your camera, and it's in China.

I would most definitely remove the back cover and check out the flat ribbon cables first before ordering a display. I have had cases where the display will not work when I didn't get the flat ribbon cables back into the sockets perfectly straight. Generally it would be the smaller cable that runs the back light. It's worth a shot!

Robert - great video, thank you for posting it. My ZS model powers on, but only wants to display what's on the SD card and won't switch to other modes of operation. Would this likely be a ribbon connection issue, or possibly require a new top control board? When I get a chance, I'll take it apart and see what I find. Thanks again.
Hi Edward. If I understand you correctly, then you cannot get the camera into the mode for taking pictures and it will only display the pictures you've already taken? If that's right, then my first thought would simply be the slide switch itself is defective or out of place. That's the small plastic switch that changes from viewing pictures on the card to actually taking pictures. I show removing that specific switch at time index 4:27 in this video. Robert Hosea Thanks Robert. I did a more thorough examination and here's what's happening: When the power is turned on and in camera mode (not picture viewing mode), then the lens opens and the camera then begins to stutter. It's like it is trying to focus, but never does. It keeps doing this until I power off, then the lens stays in the extended position when off. If I turn it on and off with the right timing, I can get the camera to retract the lens before shutting down. Does this sound like the main computer board is bad? Or could it likely be a poor ribbon connection somewhere inside? Again, thank you for posting the helpful video and your interest in helping others.
Edward L Hakala Edward, I would bet that it's the focus motor assembly. That seems to be pretty common with this lens. I have another video called "How To Repair & Clean A Panasonic Lumix ZS & TZ Model Leica Lens Units" that shows how to disassemble this lens, It doesn't actually show how to remove the focus motor, but it's pretty easy to do. At time index 13:29 of that video (not this one) you can see the motor near my left thumb. There is only one screw holding the motor in. Remove the motor slowly because the focus lens assembly that the motor controls is spring loaded. What you will need to check for is to see that the small plastic tab that runs up and down on the threaded motor shaft is free. If it's stuck, or it turns hard, then you may need to put a small amount of lubrication on the shaft and turn it a little until it frees up and moves easily.When you put the motor back in be sure that the edge of the white tab is put in the grove of the plastic housing that it rides next to. Thanks for the video. It gave me hints to change the LCD display of TZ40 (Model DMC-TZ40EP9K). LCD model DC2302. That needs a PH000 start screw driver to open.
I bought a display form Ebay $55 while Panasonic (Poland) claimed $120 and said this is not under warranty. Ebay display claimed touch sensitive, but did not work.
From Norway, it took about 6 months to send the camera and get a reply. Perhaps I'll never buy anything Panasonic.
Hi Robert me again..part arrived but it does not have the rear black screen, just the LCD that is in working order on my zs10, I did not know they came seperatly, is this normal do you know and if available are they also easy to fit? again I can only thank you for your time and efforts..

Hi Jim. I was just looking at a ZS10's LCD screen that I have here, and I don't see a rear black screen. I think possibly we're talking about two different parts. The back of the actual LCD screen (on mine at least) is covered by a silver metal panel. Is this the part you are referring to? Or possibly the plastic frame around the entire LCD assembly?

Hi Robert. Really good video. I have a DMC-TZ10. I had some sand and dust in my lens and I used your video to take it apart and clean the lenses and remove the dust. However when I put it all together I find that I have no display on the LCD screen. The lens works perfectly and I can take pictures. I saw your response to Rosemarie O'Neill who said she had the same problem. I have tried re-seating both the small and larger ribbon cable from the LCD many times but without success. My black locking bar works well, the cables are secure and everything looks good. I wonder if you have any other ideas about where the problem might lie?

The only other possibility that comes to mind is if the small flat ribbon cable, which supplies power to the back light, is upside down. On the small flat cable, the shiny gold colored contacts should be facing down when it's in the connector. This is just the opposite of the large cable where the shiny contacts will be facing up in the connector. Double check that Robin and then let me know what you find.

Thanks for your advice. I have double checked that and the shiny contacts are facing down. I have had them in and out many times now. I have tried scouring the surface of the contacts to improve the connectivity, but no joy. I have also taken the lens out and put it together to reconnect the ribbon connections behind the metal shield. Any other ideas will be welcomed.

Hello Robert... I agree with the other's your Vids are excellent.. and thank you very much... my DMC-FZ28 went for a short swim a month or so ago... I am not sure if the faint spot that shows up in my long distance shots is on the Lens or on the sensor.. I feel like it is on the lens since it isnt there on my close up shots.. guessing this though. I took the cam partially apart to see if I could get at the water film that seems to be in the eye peice section.. grrrrr lol.. but it seems like it is a sealed unit? I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me :)
Hi stinger1956! I did a search to see if I could find any videos or information regarding repairing a DMC-FZ28, but I was only able to find one video that shows replacing the LDC screen. I couldn't find anything regarding the CCD or lens unit. Unfortunately I'm unfamiliar with that camera and I don't think I can help you at all. My "guess" about the spots is the same as yours, and I believe it is something on the lens and not the CCD. I'm sorry I can't help you out on this. -Bob
