    Fun fact: When TMS was working on Lupin The Third Part Three, they were also working on cartoons that were aired in the United States like Inspector Gadget and Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats. But only their first seasons though.

      Inspector Gadget I knew was originally going to be a Lupin series, "Lupin the 8th", but there a copyright dispute erupted out of Leblanc's estate in France, which ultimately resulted in the show changing all the characters. Inspector Gadget was born out of that mess haha

    I got into Lupin after watching the Lupin vs Conan TV Special back in 2009 and I have been a Lupin fan ever since. I was originally into Detective Conan at the time and got attached to Lupin once those two had a crossover

    One thing about accessibility: The entirety of Lupin III is only available in Netflix Japan. For Asians outside of Japan, a bit of the series is somewhat accessible through Bilibili. Or, well, yeah, then you have the… unsaid alternatives. :D

    • @UToobUsername01
      @UToobUsername01 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The last alternative is what most anime fans are used to. Honestly nobody buys anime unless its cheap. Japan has overpriced it for a long time. The good news is most of japan doesn't care what goes on outside its border due to being isolationist but in an age of broadband internet speed what did you expect to happen? Broke american teenagers and colege student are used to being broke and not paying for anything so why stop at anime? I am just saying what most don't want to say because they fear the thought police. Majority of anime fans got into it from pirated stuff they got from clubs in the old days and this tradition of not paying for it will continue long after we are dead.

      @@UToobUsername01 Also blame U.S. companies that put three or four eps on a disc when 8 could fit and then charge $30 for it, making a complete series cost hundreds of dollar. I used to wait for the $19.99 complete series box sets to come out a year after the final disc of a show was released. I remember buying Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny that way.

    This video is fantastic!! I love the Lupin III series and I am LIVING for all these videos on youtube about him! From the funny "out of context" clips from the shows, to the history behind the series and the creative minds behind the scenes, to the media analysis of the shows/movies and what they mean thematically and character-wise, and now these kinds of videos explaining how to navigate the series for newcomers. You did a fantastic job explaining the history of the series, explaining who the characters are, and explaining how each series has its own tone and target audience. I really appreciate that you covered the nuance behind the jacket colors and how the colors are meant to represent a different type of Lupin character instead of a defined point in time on a timeline. Sometimes the colors are used to portray a younger or older Lupin, but not always and I like that you explained that. Also the editing in this video was top notch! I imagine it took a great deal of time to put this together. Thank you for making this video and spreading the love of this series to people who might be interested ❤

    I love Fujiko so much. After all these years, she's still portrayed as the sexy, seductive femme fatale style character who isn't afraid to use her sexuality and feminine wiles to get what she wants. Or she'll blast her way through the scene before one upping Lupin and getting away with the treasure once again. Her character, like much of the rest of the cast has retained her nature and essence since pretty much the first series. It's a breath of fresh air to have a character still portrayed as sexy and feminine as opposed to trying to QUOTE UNQUOTE modernize and empower her by basically turning her into a man.
    The same can be said about the rest of the cast as well. Lupin's interpretations can shift slightly between the different shows, but you always get a sense that he's loving what he's doing and he's 4 steps ahead. Jigen is still the same rough and tumble reliable best friend, and Goemon is still the old fashioned Samurai. The shows are just so good no matter if you're getting the goofier stories or the deadly serious Lupin the IIIrd iterations. Which by the way are some of the best version of those characters. If you want some really badass version of these characters make sure to watch the Lupin the IIIrd movies.

    My auntie always comes back from Japan with weird cartoons recorded in VHS tapes.

    There were Voltes V, Dragonball, etc and the best of them all was Lupin the 3rd.

    A rather interesting viewing order for beginners here.
    I, personally would want to show people a balanced take on Lupin first. I only watched a handful of TV specials but I think Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid is up there, and maybe Episode 0: First Contact. They both have this nice blend of coolness and goofiness.
    I think what the two also have in common is how they show the character dynamics and their skill sets really well. And I think all the characters have something to do.
    And then (pretty controversial choice, I guess), jump into Part 5. Most of the main story arcs are good and the standalone episodes could give new viewers an idea what to expect from other Lupin media.
    Also welcome back, Jay. Glad you're posting videos again 👍

    • @SNKJay
      @SNKJay  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ooh, Blood Seal is wonderful! I totally forgot about that when making this video, haha my bad XD Episode 0 I'm a little iffy on, although it does have some nice goofiness. I was more concerned with how someone would approach the shows. Jumping to Part 5 would be doable tbh, there aren't many things that carry from Part 4, and if they do they're hardly necessary to understand. I always found Part 2 to be a great place to attract the most people, it's what got me into the shows at least. Yeah, thanks! I intend to make more stuff, got the time now so I'm good :D

    A few months ago I wanted to start this anime, and your video helped me to get interested in the show, first of all this is an older show that has a lot of parts, but your video and analysis helped me how to start, and since this show has a lot of fan service it affected my viewing a bit in the end.
    And since I like to watch Eng DUB, and only if it's satisfactory, which means that if the characters are still the same as in the original, and if the voice actor performances are good enough, that's why I didn't watch a couple of movies because they didn't seem interesting to me and they weren't dubbed, so this is my order of how I watched this anime:
    Lupine III THE GREEN SUIT (first 23 episodes and two movies).
    Lupine III THE RED SUIT (I was a little disappointed that this season wasn't fully dubbed, but I still watched everything in order, all 155 episodes and 13 movies with the red suit, and I watch the movies in the order of the year they came out, and in the order of the color of the suit, which means I don't watch other movies who do not have the same suit color as the season I finished).
    Lupine III THE PINK SUIT (This series is not dubbed, but I decided to watch all 50 episodes, and that's only because of the 2 movies in which have a pink suit and were dubbed, otherwise I would have skipped the pink suit).
    Lupine III THE BLUE SUIT (I watched this in the order that the seasons came out, two seasons with the blue suit, and the last one with the green one, which still follows the story of the last two, so I decided to combine them, and I think there is a special when Lupin travels through time with a car, and that happen during these seasons, so I also included it in this calculation, that would be 74 episodes and the movies, which are more like 2 part episodes, the storys that focus on Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko, I called them movies, but they are still 6 episodes that together make 3 movies).
    Lupine III THE CGI MOVIE (I separated this LUPIN THE FIRST 2019 movie from everyone, because it's the only time these characters have been shown in this kind of animation, so I didn't think I should put it with for example the red suit movies, but here near the end of this journey).
    MINE FUJIKO TO IU ONNA (I saved this for last, because of your good description, and I respect a good fan service, so I left this for last, and it turns out that the events of this take place before the main characters met, and that it can be watched before all the shows almost perfectly and easily to continue with Lupine III THE GREEN SUIT his 23 episodes onwards).
    In conclusion, I realized that the stories from all these series and movies can be CANON, with minor problems in the details, but that all the things happened, just maybe not in all the details, but that the characters stick to their behavior and events in different seasons and movies, depending on what suit Lupin wears, since in the seasons we have mentions and appearances of characters from the movies, and places from the movies that did not appear in the shows, and because of the special where Lupin travels through time and almost loses his friends, but in the end manages to restore everything.
    I watched this like a marathon, and I took a break when I finished with the red suit, and then I continued and I didn't skip anything, because I'm like that, if I tell someone that I've watched an anime, it means that I've watched everything that anime has to offer, and that I can talk about it comfortably, but it was not easy to browse all episodes and movies from this anime giant, but thanks to your video I was able to watch the series properly, by making my own way of watching.
    Thank you very much for everything, you prepared me for this anime show properly.

    I'll sum it up way easier since it can be done in like 1 minute.
    If you want to get into lupin you can consider this: The 1st three parts are completely episodic, and there's not much tonal difference outside of Part 1 being a little grittier.
    If you want to watch beyond part 3 you're getting parts that have no continuity to anything except themselves while trying to somewhat establish continuity..
    If you think of everything having no continuity to a point it's very easy to not overthink it. Part 4,5,6 can have a story of their own, but they can jump back and forth to red jacket, green jacket and pink jacket without much of a thought.
    As for the movies? they have no relation to the series outside of being influenced on what was being made at the time(Mamo coming out early in Part 2's run, and Cagliostro coming out towards the end when Lupin was established the way he was by Miyazaki).
    And the specials? They're all one offs, entirely their own thing.
    The Fujiko series and it's sequel films? all self contained in it's own continuity and being way grittier as it's closer to the manga?
    And the Manga? gritty, full of death and craziness, and not reflective of the modern anime characterization of Lupin.
    Long story short you can start anywhere really for part 1-3, the specials, and mamo and calgiostro. But if you want a basic idea of who these characters are it's best to watch a few episodes of part 1, part 2 or part 3.

    Heh. That FF IX mention was my achievement! lol
    Glad to see you're back with a new Lupin video. How are you doing?
    It's a great time to be a Lupin fan actually. They recently released the Fujiko Mine miniseries in German and got the old voice cast from the 90's. And just yesterday they released first half of series 6. It's the first time an entire Lupin series is getting translated into German. Only thing bugging me is the price. Like honestly the Fujiko DVD/Blu ray was like 90$ same for the first half of Series 6. 90$ for 12is episodes is insane ...

    • @Drachenhannes
      @Drachenhannes ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After watching the video:
      I am still 50 episodes shy of finishing Part 2 and haven't seen anything from part 3 yet. But i have seen most of the movies and every other show.
      In my opinion the first half of the first series is just one detail away from being perfect. They are to happy. It would greatly benefit from a touch of misery. It's to romantic. Lupin has the most loyal friends who'd go to any lengths to help him. He's on top of the world. If he wants to have sex with a girl who's to stop him? definitely not her objections. A touch of "Once upon a Time in America" would be great. Trading the romantics of the heist movies from the 30's with the pitiful men of the 70's and 80's. He kills he rapes. That's the making of a pitiful man. Show him riding the highs but also suffering the deepest lows. In short: Crush the image when it seems that his lifestyle is something to be admired.
      Part 2 is okay but sometimes even weirder than part 1 with it's magicians and time travelers. I really enjoyed a handful of em but most are just okay-ish.
      Part 4 is a great start as well as endpoint to a Lupin Journey. To me Zenigata makes or breaks a Lupin show. Every hero benefits from a formidable adversary. Star Wars wouldn't be as great if Darth Vader was a bumbling moron. They enter the scene and you know shit just got real. And Zenigata is on top of his game here. Honestly i think he's even better than Lupin. Lupin has months to plan every move and counter every measure taken to arrest him. Zenigata has to think on his feet to outwit Lupin in the moment. He comes close to and even manages to capture him. In part 4 he isn't just competent. He's the very best chance they have in getting Lupin. Also i just love the end. This is how Lupin should end.
      SPOILERS:
      The gang just waiting at a trainstation and with every passing train someone else is just gone. No good bye no see you next time. They just go their seperate ways and might never see each other again. If anyone ever watches just one single selfcontained and concluded show this should be it.
      Part 5 is a great continuation and should not be watched without part 4. If you liked part 4, you are most likely going to enjoy 5 as well.
      6 is another okay show for me. The Sherlok premise could be better integrated and more meaningful. also the Character himself is not living up to his potential. This should historically be his greatest foil.
      Now here's a weird take: I love the Fujiko Mine series, but hate it's tie-in movies.
      Koike really did not understand what made the show so amazing. It's dark, adult, noir, violent, but never going to explicit. The movies have a very comon problem. Blood=cool. Blood makes something adult. It does not. If anything it makes something childish. Remember the scene from Jurassic Park where the Rex is eating another Dinosaur? The adult wasn't the one going "WHOA! Look at all the blood!" It was the 12 year old boy. Kids and edgy teenagers think blood is cool and adult. I don't like the Goemon movie and don't even get me started on the giant dildo drill robot. What movie was that in again? Fujiko Mine feels adult without being chep. The nudity isn't as fetishized as in the aforementioned drildo scene. the violence is often more aluded to than celebrated. I really love it. It's also contained and also a great way to start.
      I think the best entry point is the movie Voyage to Danger. Might be a bit biased because that's how i got introduced to Lupin but try and hear me out: If you start with the very best (As in Castle of Cagliostro) whatever you watch next will be a step down. Also that movie shows a bit of a settled Lupin. He seems more at the end of his personal journey than at the beginning. He doesn't have any ulterior motives for helping the princess. He's just trying to help.
      Voyage to Danger shows Lupin at the top of his game. He invades an armsdealer on a private island and it has a very bond-esque feeling. Shotshell is a great evil organization and Klotz is a dispicable person. A great spy Thriller. Not the very best but a really good movie and if that is your one and only venture into Lupin fair enough. If not there are some movies a step up. Some a step down and you can go in any direction with quality and character.
      Whew that was a lot. But hey i just watched a 50 minute video. Of course i had a lot to say ^^

    • @SNKJay
      @SNKJay  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Drachenhannes "Crush the image when it seems that his lifestyle is something to be admired." Love that quote, I'll steal that if you don't mind XD. I liked the Woman Called Fujiko tie-in movies, although they are definitely TOO explicit. I see them more as one-offs, taking the characters in different directions we haven't seen before. The giant robot in the Daisuke Jigen movie.... I would never show a clip of that on a youtube video of mine, not without intense censorship haha. Voyage to Danger is a VERY Lupin/80s movie, I love it a lot. The story is well-written, I may make a video JUST on Voyage to Danger in the near future, it's enjoyable. As a kid, I didn't understand it, only now can I say it's well-made.

      I'm from Germany as well and while it's getting better, the state of Lupin III in Germany is still pretty sad. Not a lot of films are legally available to watch (as most of them never made it to Germany to begin with) and the tv series' are virtually unknown here. But at least it is slowly getting better. Crunchyroll released part six and the spin-off and got the license for part one (which apparently will be available to stream/ buy on DVD and Blu-ray this fall). I hope they are successful enough to warrant bringing more Lupin to Germany, especially Part Two and some of the older tv specials or films.

It was strange to think anime could be on Netflix streaming, and yet here we are with Naruto, One Piece, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, etc. I'm sure we'll get an access to the Lupin vault someday. For now, physical media is the only option for tracking these things down (especially "Plot of the Fuma Clan", sheesh so rare)

    Tbf, the core reason Lupin isn't up there with the other big Shonen anime, is mainly down to the fact that the show is designed purely with adults in mind and has a realistic setting (besides some of the goofy traps in the franchise that don't make sense).
    The shonen anime for as long as I can remember, has been largely dominated by shows aimed at both kids/teens, and feature characters with wholesome journeys or journeys that involve massive fantasy/sci fi battles with power levels that scale each week.
    With a show like Lupin, you don't get power levels or trips to other worlds or dimensions, you just get people with guns and sharp wits about them in tough situations, and that's what I feel works best for Lupin, just not for Shonen anime aimed at teens/kids, who naturally expect bombastic shows and themes (it's also why Golgo 13 never took to the mainstream audience, because it had far more nudity and adult themes going on than even Lupin had).
    personally, I grew up with Lupin starting with it's chronological order, then watching the movies that released during the each part's respective release years, and so far I've not been overwhelmed by following the anime in it's chronological release order.
    I wouldn't exactly suggest anyone new follow that route though, since some folks may be put off by the early Lupin 3rd styles of Pt 1-3, compared to pt 4-6 (which is more modern and less goofy looking than the older parts).
    That being said, I'm glad there are still younger folks trying to get into an anime as old as this and greatly appreciate spending your time in making a guide for future fans to dip their toes into, because this franchise really deserves all it's success and appreciation.

Lupin killed a bunch of people along with Goemon and Jigen especially in Part 5. The Black Notebook Arc especially was bloody as hell. I'd enjoy your takes like I'd agree that this franchise is the Scooby Doo in Japan, which is ironically true. Look at the parallels! Lupin Zero = A Pup Named Scooby Doo. I think that part that especially did it in, was after watching it, watching twilight Gemini, which had a very similar setting and even similar story beats, but the characters were just so much better (imo) to the ones in dead or alive.
    That being said, I also highly recommend Episode 0: First Encounter, and also Operation Return the Treasure, both were really good, with the former being a more serious movie in tone compared to most movies, and the latter having a good story, and also genuinely having some of my favorite jokes from some of the movies…

    The main character of Lupin the Third is Lupin himself, Mine Fujiko, Jigen Daisuke and Ishikawa Goemon, so if you are looking for a chronological order then you should start with obviously Lupin Zero which is Lupin as a kid and you'll see his first interaction with Jigen. Then, you can watch Mine Fujiko to Iu Onna which will show you how Mine got to know Lupin, Jigen and Goemon. Then after that watch the three sequels which are three movies, Jigen Daisuke no Bohyou, Chikemuri no Ishikawa Goemon and Mine Fujiko no Uso. The rest you can watch it however you like.

    If you can afford to spend a lot on multiple streaming sevices even though you dont own the product or spend even more on physical copies that you DO own then more power too you, but know that no one is stopping you from pirating the show.

    Mamo is a very horny and morally grey lupin
