@@chaist94 As the word is now used, a patriot does what's right, without fanfare. A nationalist does everything they can to tell everyone how proud they are, and look at me while i do this. Actions, rather than show.
@@chaist94 You are correct: Per Webster: Patriotism: love for or devotion to one's country Nationalism: loyalty and devotion to a nation (this includes an attitude of superiority over other nations) Nationalism has a number of NEAR-synonyms, each of which carries its own distinct meaning: Patriotism is similar insofar as it emphasizes strong feelings for one’s country, but it does NOT necessarily imply an attitude of superiority. Sectionalism resembles nationalism in its suggestion of a geopolitical group pursuing its self-interest, but the group in question is usually smaller than an entire nation. Jingoism closely resembles nationalism in suggesting feelings of cultural superiority, but unlike nationalism, it always implies military aggressiveness. However, Professor Reich is also correct with his explanations as well. He explains the meanings as they pertain specifically to the United States. He delves deeper into those definitions by providing details and examples of the effects caused by the behaviors as they pertain to these concepts. Our Country and Government is a collection of ideas. The basic founding PRINCIPLES of the U.S. is ALL men ('Man') are created equal and there should be Liberty and Justice for ALL. Mind you, in the era of its inception, the cultural idea of 'Man' was referring to the specific male gender with a status of being what was then deemed as 'civilized' - (Unfortunately, in that ignorant day and age, women, Native Americans, and peoples originating from dark skinned nations were deemed as lesser beings) Our Founding Fathers ingeniously created the LIVING document known as our Constitution. Utilizing their wisdom, they had the knowledge of realizing the collective perceptions and ideas of a populous progressively changes over time. They instilled the necessity of leaving it open ended. Which in turn, led to the justly redefinition of 'Man' to include the ENTIRETY of the human race. In other words: "Patriots" LOVE the PRINCIPLES of which is our country was founded on and are DEVOTED to them. "Nationalists" are DEVOTED to their nation and feel SUPERIOR to others (which includes those other countries' peoples) Conservatives: Keep the Status Quo, Fear of Loss, Resist Change, Hoard Resources, Individualism, Selfishness - Primary emotion: FEAR Progressives: Pursue New Ideas, Advocates Change, Assert Advancement, Evolve, Social Improvement - Primary emotion: COURAGE I find the majority of Conservatives tend to follow the initial literal meaning of the definition of ‘Equality of ALL Men’ Which excludes those originally perceived as ‘lesser’ beings. (women, Native Americans, and peoples originating from dark skinned nations) Therefore, would most likely follow the ideology of Nationalism. Whereas, the majority of Progressives tend follow the advanced definition of ‘Equality of ALL Men’ (Which includes the ENTIRETY of the human race) Therefore, would most likely follow the ideology of Patriotism. That’s my take anyway. Everyone is free to think differently. :)

A part of the problem is the way we approach national problems as though they were sports events being played by opposing teams. Sports metaphors and similes are threaded throughout our politics. Nationalists see immigrants as being supported by the opposing team. They see climate change as a political competition instead of an existential scientific dilemma, as something to be "won." A true patriot understands that our country is made up of concentric circles of interlocking, interdependent communities and not simply a land mass surrounded by a border that has to be defended like a goal line.

Thank you Mr. Reich for the eloquent, easy to understand explanation of the difference between Patriot and Nationalist. I consider myself a "quiet patriot"...I don't wear an American flag patch embroidered onto my clothes, I don't need to fly the flag in my front yard or wear a stars and stripes T-shirt or hat. My patriotism resides strong, safe and secure on the inside and is ready to be put into action when the need arises. You have all the qualities to be a great leader...but I know the majority would never allow you to achieve that. They never intended for the nation to become what it has. You are blatantly misrepresenting the facts.
Well said. On this Day of Independence, look inside and find your true inner patriot, then welcome the outsider and the greater good in “WE the people.”
Overpopulation concerns are real. Too many people can overun the nation and trash it. Housing, energy, jobs, traffic and all sorts of problems arise from over population.
Nationalism means to be proud of your history and culture, and not to let it being destroyed, what you have portrayed here as nationalism is chauvinism.
I disagree. Patriotism is pride in the nation for what it is and what it does. Nationalism is pride in the nation regardless of what it is or what it does. A patriot stands by his nation in good times, shows pride when his country achieves something, but hides when the nation goes through bad times. On the other hand, the nationalist shows pride and supports his nation in good times and bad. The nationalist puts his nation first, not because he wants to destroy or humiliate others, but because he wants the best for himself and his people.
Thanks Robert. Excellent description of the differences. I must admit I have said that patriotism equals racism while hiding behind a flag. I guess there is an angle where one can celebrate ones country of residence but I really feel patriotism is a slippery slope. So, perhaps patriotism isn't 'the last refuge of the scoundrel', but instead that nationalism is the last 'refuge of the scoundrel.' I'm glad a difference was made between the two. I guess time will tell which it turns out to be.
Patriotism is obviously about exclusion. It excludes every country other than your own. All these definitions boil down to "Patriotism is Nationalism I approve of, Nationalism is Patriotism I dissaprove of". To avoid the idea that both are dumb.
Jill Lepore, in her latest book (This America: The Case for the Nation*), draws a helpful distinction between patriotism and nationalism: "Sometimes people confuse nationalism with patriotism. There's nothing wrong and all kinds of things right with loving the place where you live and the people you live with and wanting that place and those people to thrive, so it's easy to confuse nationalism with patriotism, especially because they once meant more or less the same thing. But by the early decades of the 20th century, with the rise of fascism in Europe, nationalism had come to mean something different from patriotism, something fierce, something violent: less a love for your own country than a hatred of other countries and their people and a hatred of people within your country who don't belong to an ethnic, racial, or religious majority...hating immigrants, as if they were lesser humans, is a form of nationalism that has nothing to do with patriotism...hating globalists, as if they were fiends, is a form of nationalism that has nothing to do with patriotism. Because it's difficult to convince people to pursue a course of aggression, violence, and domination, requiring sacrifices made in the name of the nation, nationalists pretend their aims are instead protection and unity and that their motivation is patriotism. This is a lie. Patriotism is animated by love, nationalism by hatred. To confuse the one for the other is to pretend that hate is love and fear is courage." *A #resistance "must read" imo.
Nationalism is the step between democracy and fascism. Watch videos of Benito Mussolini the Italian fascist who rose to become an axis power. The similarity between the way Benito and Trump behave is frightening.
Patriotism is a right-wing, authoritarian, manipulative, idealistic, and irrational ideology (morality, attitude, value system) that consists of: - Subordinating an individual's (man's) entire existence to the interests of the state, unconditional loyalty to "their" state, a sense of duty and gratitude to it, and love for it more than any other state and often more than anything else. - A tendency to prioritize "their" state by designating it and its existence as the highest value, and the interests of "their" state as more important than anything else, including men's rights and human rights in general. - Bias, a sense of pride and exclusivity based on belonging to "their" state, identifying oneself primarily through "their" state and "their" nation, exalting and idealizing their "special features" (quotes emphasize that these "features" may not be unique, inherent only to this state and nation) and their "historical mission." - Willingness to endure suffering, death, murder, cruelty, deceit, betrayal, etc., for the interests of "their" state, in short, any deprivation, violence, and injustice within the permitted or beyond. This definition does not contradict common dictionary definitions of patriotism. Historical Context: Patriotism spread in modern times with the development of capitalism and the "promotion" of stationary bandits to so-called national states. National states imposed conscription on the male population, an early version of modern conscription slavery, thereby building their sovereignty on the expendability of men. Accompanying patriotism served and continues to serve as a means of instilling beneficial sentiments (delusions) in men to ensure the number and motivation of state armed formations. Ideological processing proved effective and deeply rooted in public consciousness: many men still see no other life and death than under and for the state. Patriotism has always been primarily aimed at men, with some components directed exclusively at men. Patriotism is cultivated everywhere, promoting division among groups such as men, workers, racial-ethnic minorities, the opposition, etc. As a result, exploited men subjected to patriotic manipulations gain false confidence that they have more in common with "their" women and exploiters than with "foreign" men, workers, and other oppressed groups. The state benefits and even needs the oppressed (primarily men) to see "foreigners" (primarily men) as enemies, competitors, or simply frighteningly incomprehensible, rather than as similarly oppressed individuals - friends and brothers. Thus, patriotism is a means of stirring up discord and hostility, brainwashing working men by breaking down and replacing their identity and diverting their attention from real problems. Goals of Patriotism: The goals of patriotism are: 1. Uniting men, workers, etc., around the elites, the state, and fears of threats to the state, often fictional. 2. Dividing men along national lines and destroying international solidarity among oppressed workers. Women often trust authorities more and therefore more actively propagate state narratives, and they are the most active in shaming men trying to avoid conscription slavery, leaving the country, and not wanting to support the war. In military propaganda, "foreign" men are portrayed as threats primarily to "their" women, whom "their" men must protect at the cost of their own lives if they are not cowards, traitors, etc. Women patriots willingly embrace the role of helpless innocents in distress, while remaining safe and indirectly sending thousands of men to death. Patriotism is categorically incompatible with the ideas of liberating groups like men and workers, and with humanistic values as such. In countries like Russia, China, the USA, and other colonial artificial formations, patriotism extends beyond gender and class issues, becoming synonymous with full acceptance of the oppressed status of previously captured racial and ethnic groups, denying them the right to self-determination and escape from the prison of nations. In these countries, patriotism is inseparable from aggressive imperialism and racial-ethnic intolerance, directed both outwardly and inwardly. Much of the above also applies to nationalism, a variation of patriotism that values the nation (instead of the state) as the highest value. Distinguishing patriotism and nationalism should be done in the context of more detailed studies; otherwise, it makes little sense. Exceptions: National liberation struggles - conflicts of state-oppressed ethnic groups seeking independence and the states seeking to keep subjugated peoples in submission - can be considered exceptions to the general rule. In such cases, attacks on patriotism (nationalism) become problematic due to possible accusations of sympathizing with colonialism and statism and various forms of intolerance and bias, as the object of adoration - the oppressor (state) - is replaced by the oppressed masses (people). Nonetheless, even in these seemingly noble examples of patriotism (nationalism), the presence of gender-biased manipulators (e.g., leaders of national-oriented parties and armed formations) pushing or openly forcing only the male population to self-sacrifice is always evident. A consistent advocate for men's rights cannot be a patriot because he places men's interests and benefits above those of social constructs like the state and nation, rejects the value (in meanings close to "high morality," "sacredness," "holiness") of these constructs, and sees their debunking and complete overcoming as a necessary step towards his goal.

But in short, neither word has anything to do with ethnicity at all. Nationalism and patriotism are synonyms. You could argue that in literature nationalism is usually the love of a nation government and patriotism the love of a land. But I think this discussion would be too nuanced and not contain enough ad hominem attacks for Robert.
@@chaist94 As the word is now used, a patriot does what's right, without fanfare.
A nationalist does everything they can to tell everyone how proud they are, and look at me while i do this.
Actions, rather than show.
There seem to be many sado-masochists out there
@@chaist94 You are correct: Per Webster:
Patriotism: love for or devotion to one's country
Nationalism: loyalty and devotion to a nation (this includes an attitude of superiority over other nations)
Nationalism has a number of NEAR-synonyms, each of which carries its own distinct meaning:
Patriotism is similar insofar as it emphasizes strong feelings for one’s country, but it does NOT necessarily imply an attitude of superiority.
Mind you, in the era of its inception, the cultural idea of 'Man' was referring to the specific male gender with a status of being what was then deemed as 'civilized' - (Unfortunately, in that ignorant day and age, women, Native Americans, and peoples originating from dark skinned nations were deemed as lesser beings)
Our Founding Fathers ingeniously created the LIVING document known as our Constitution.
Utilizing their wisdom, they had the knowledge of realizing the collective perceptions and ideas of a populous progressively changes over time. They instilled the necessity of leaving it open ended. Which in turn, led to the justly redefinition of 'Man' to include the ENTIRETY of the human race.
In other words:
"Patriots" LOVE the PRINCIPLES of which is our country was founded on and are DEVOTED to them.
"Nationalists" are DEVOTED to their nation and feel SUPERIOR to others (which includes those other countries' peoples)
Conservatives: Keep the Status Quo, Fear of Loss, Resist Change, Hoard Resources, Individualism, Selfishness - Primary emotion: FEAR
Progressives: Pursue New Ideas, Advocates Change, Assert Advancement, Evolve, Social Improvement - Primary emotion: COURAGE
I find the majority of Conservatives tend to follow the initial literal meaning of the definition of ‘Equality of ALL Men’ Which excludes those originally perceived as ‘lesser’ beings.

A part of the problem is the way we approach national problems as though they were sports events being played by opposing teams. Sports metaphors and similes are threaded throughout our politics. Patriotism is pride in the nation for what it is and what it does.
Nationalism is pride in the nation regardless of what it is or what it does.

Exactly, it's the same damn thing.
Jill Lepore, in her latest book (This America: The Case for the Nation*), draws a helpful distinction between patriotism and nationalism:
"Sometimes people confuse nationalism with patriotism.
To confuse the one for the other is to pretend that hate is love and fear is courage."
*A #resistance "must read" imo.
Nationalism is the step between democracy and fascism. Watch videos of Benito Mussolini the Italian fascist who rose to become an axis power. The similarity between the way Benito and Trump behave is frightening.
Patriotism is a right-wing, authoritarian, manipulative, idealistic, and irrational ideology (morality, attitude, value system) that consists of:
- Subordinating an individual's (man's) entire existence to the interests of the state, unconditional loyalty to "their" state, a sense of duty and gratitude to it, and love for it more than any other state and often more than anything else.
- A tendency to prioritize "their" state by designating it and its existence as the highest value, and the interests of "their" state as more important than anything else, including men's rights and human rights in general.
- Bias, a sense of pride and exclusivity based on belonging to "their" state, identifying oneself primarily through "their" state and "their" nation, exalting and idealizing their "special features" (quotes emphasize that these "features" may not be unique, inherent only to this state and nation) and their "historical mission."
- Willingness to endure suffering, death, murder, cruelty, deceit, betrayal, etc., for the interests of "their" state, in short, any deprivation, violence, and injustice within the permitted or beyond.
This definition does not contradict common dictionary definitions of patriotism.
Historical Context:
Patriotism spread in modern times with the development of capitalism and the "promotion" of stationary bandits to so-called national states.
Goals of Patriotism:
The goals of patriotism are:
Exceptions:
National liberation struggles - conflicts of state-oppressed ethnic groups seeking independence and the states seeking to keep subjugated peoples in submission - can be considered exceptions to the general rule.
