    • @gabbi111969

@@chaist94 You are correct: Per Webster:
Patriotism: love for or devotion to one's country
Nationalism: loyalty and devotion to a nation (this includes an attitude of superiority over other nations)
Nationalism has a number of NEAR-synonyms, each of which carries its own distinct meaning:
Patriotism is similar insofar as it emphasizes strong feelings for one’s country, but it does NOT necessarily imply an attitude of superiority.
Sectionalism resembles nationalism in its suggestion of a geopolitical group pursuing its self-interest, but the group in question is usually smaller than an entire nation.
Jingoism closely resembles nationalism in suggesting feelings of cultural superiority, but unlike nationalism, it always implies military aggressiveness.
However, Professor Reich is also correct with his explanations as well. He explains the meanings as they pertain specifically to the United States. He delves deeper into those definitions by providing details and examples of the effects caused by the behaviors as they pertain to these concepts.
Our Country and Government is a collection of ideas. The basic founding PRINCIPLES of the U.S. is ALL men ('Man') are created equal and there should be Liberty and Justice for ALL.
Mind you, in the era of its inception, the cultural idea of 'Man' was referring to the specific male gender with a status of being what was then deemed as 'civilized' - (Unfortunately, in that ignorant day and age, women, Native Americans, and peoples originating from dark skinned nations were deemed as lesser beings)
Our Founding Fathers ingeniously created the LIVING document known as our Constitution.
Utilizing their wisdom, they had the knowledge of realizing the collective perceptions and ideas of a populous progressively changes over time. They instilled the necessity of leaving it open ended. Which in turn, led to the justly redefinition of 'Man' to include the ENTIRETY of the human race.
      In other words:
"Patriots" LOVE the PRINCIPLES of which is our country was founded on and are DEVOTED to them.
"Nationalists" are DEVOTED to their nation and feel SUPERIOR to others (which includes those other countries' peoples)
Conservatives: Keep the Status Quo, Fear of Loss, Resist Change, Hoard Resources, Individualism, Selfishness - Primary emotion: FEAR
Progressives: Pursue New Ideas, Advocates Change, Assert Advancement, Evolve, Social Improvement - Primary emotion: COURAGE
I find the majority of Conservatives tend to follow the initial literal meaning of the definition of ‘Equality of ALL Men’ Which excludes those originally perceived as ‘lesser’ beings. (women, Native Americans, and peoples originating from dark skinned nations) Therefore, would most likely follow the ideology of Nationalism.
Whereas, the majority of Progressives tend follow the advanced definition of ‘Equality of ALL Men’ (Which includes the ENTIRETY of the human race) Therefore, would most likely follow the ideology of Patriotism.
That’s my take anyway. Everyone is free to think differently.
      :)

A part of the problem is the way we approach national problems as though they were sports events being played by opposing teams. Sports metaphors and similes are threaded throughout our politics. Nationalists see immigrants as being supported by the opposing team. They see climate change as a political competition instead of an existential scientific dilemma, as something to be "won." A true patriot understands that our country is made up of concentric circles of interlocking, interdependent communities and not simply a land mass surrounded by a border that has to be defended like a goal line.

Thank you Mr. Reich for the eloquent, easy to understand explanation of the difference between Patriot and Nationalist. I consider myself a "quiet patriot"...I don't wear an American flag patch embroidered onto my clothes, I don't need to fly the flag in my front yard or wear a stars and stripes T-shirt or hat. My patriotism resides strong, safe and secure on the inside and is ready to be put into action when the need arises. The founding fathers knew what true Patriotism is but their ideals have been diluted and partially lost over the centuries in this country. The "Nationalists" are the antithesis of Patriots, as you pointed out.
On a different note, how I wish you could be our President, or at least Vice President or perhaps Secretary of State. You have all the qualities to be a great leader...but I know the majority would never allow you to achieve that. This country is dominated by a loud vocal minority who have no empathy, compassion or sense of right and wrong. The "lowest common denominator people" have gained power in this country. If that does not change in 2020 then I feel we are doomed to the inevitable implosion of our government and riots in the streets. Authoritarians ALWAYS....always..come to a bad end!

Jill Lepore, in her latest book (This America: The Case for the Nation*), draws a helpful distinction between patriotism and nationalism:
"Sometimes people confuse nationalism with patriotism. There's nothing wrong and all kinds of things right with loving the place where you live and the people you live with and wanting that place and those people to thrive, so it's easy to confuse nationalism with patriotism, especially because they once meant more or less the same thing. But by the early decades of the 20th century, with the rise of fascism in Europe, nationalism had come to mean something different from patriotism, something fierce, something violent: less a love for your own country than a hatred of other countries and their people and a hatred of people within your country who don't belong to an ethnic, racial, or religious majority...hating immigrants, as if they were lesser humans, is a form of nationalism that has nothing to do with patriotism...hating globalists, as if they were fiends, is a form of nationalism that has nothing to do with patriotism.
Because it's difficult to convince people to pursue a course of aggression, violence, and domination, requiring sacrifices made in the name of the nation, nationalists pretend their aims are instead protection and unity and that their motivation is patriotism. This is a lie. Patriotism is animated by love, nationalism by hatred. To confuse the one for the other is to pretend that hate is love and fear is courage."
    *A #resistance "must read" imo.

I'm in New Zealand and I'm very aware it's nothing more than the best luck I've ever had to be born here and not somewhere "wartorn". To lose that perspective and lose humanity towards others as if I'm somehow superior to people from other countries because of my luck is something to be wary of. In my mind, true patriotism is a love and care for one’s country or beliefs but to have an openness, interest and respect for other people’s nations, cultures, beliefs and opinions. It’s also the ability to still fight for what you believe in for your country but also to recognize the imperfections of that country or idea and to see how that issue can be fixed. Nationalism is also often rooted in denial of a country’s flaws. But patriotism is what motivated me to serve in the US Army. Because although I know America isn’t perfect, I still believe in the idea of liberty and a free democracy.
