    Magnacut is the best steel right now, and it will be for a long time. Magnacut is a special steel, because even with 64 hrc it does not lose its toughness. Magnacut steel is a breakthrough in the steel industry. I have two knives in magnacut 62 hrc and I am delighted with the performance.

    Seems like they hit a niche that no one else has. Every time I look they are alway sold out in one steel or another. They have a great selection of steels a large variety of handle materials and sheath materials and all at a good price. Between 150 and 350 for a customized knife with tons of options is a great thing to see on the market. I have an ak 5.5 in 3v on the way and I cant wait to see how it performs.

    I got the AK8 in Magnacut when they first dropped a while ago. Literally sold out in minutes. Been a fan of Architect Knives when they were only offered through TKC and referred as the “Field Buddy”. White River makes the Magnacut and S35VN blades and Tops makes the 3V and 1095 blades.

    The AK 8 looks pretty nice, I have the AK6.5
    That said I think it would be neat if they went with the Junglas handle profile for the AK8 instead of the Esee 5/6 handles. I think the extra bird beak on the end of the Junglas handle would complement the 8 inch blade better. Maybe I’m wrong but just my thoughts

    Magnacut blades just dropped & I came down on one like a sumo wrestler. Red & black G10, black leather patern kydex.
    Just wish they still had the blue & black G10 scales available. My favorite handle.
    Although I just got purple & black suretouch & that is a nice material. Feels like a combo of G10, MICARTA, & CRAYTON.
    Blue & black G10 is still my favorite, though. Especially from bradford knives, their micro texturing feels excellent.

    So glad to hear they are running this at 62HRC. Makers tend to run steels too soft thinking they are increasing toughness. It took outcry from the community to get Benchmade to increase their 3V to 60, for example. But Magnacut has a toughness peak at 61-62 and should never be run any softer than this. It's about 1.5x tougher at 62 than 1095 is at 57 (like ESEE, etc.), and has over twice the wear resistance. The corrosion resistance is a bonus.

    • @S.Vallieres
      @S.Vallieres 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi,
      you mentioned MagnaCut has a toughness peak at 61-62 HRC... Do you mean it has lower toughness at lower hardness?
      If so, I would appreciate you give me a link towards this information because I've read just about everything on it on the KSN website and never have seen such data.
      Thanks in advance for your help.

    • @kevinmc1111
      @kevinmc1111 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In order to get a toughness/hardness curve you have to correlate the austenitizing and tempering temperatures with hardness and toughness on different charts and the tables on the white paper. It'd be great if Larrin would put all this in the same table for us. Sometimes different charts and tables give different hardnesses for the same temperatures, so that adds a layer of difficulty. This might be with/without cryo, not sure. But we only have one datapoint that I can find for under 60.5hrc which is 1950f/350f at 59.5hrc and 13.3 toughness. Actually, now that I look at the data again, I wonder how tough 2050/450@~59hrc would be. However, many steels have a toughness peak around 59-61, depending on the steel. This means they are tougher at this hardness than at 56, for example. I assume this is because there is an embrittlement zone for these steels in this region. Other steels, like 10xx are very linear and don't have any peak at all.

    Magnacut has been questionable in my opinion, but the more knives I try with it and more amazing I think it is. It has to be heat treated right, and blade geometry is still more important, but it's definitely worth the upcharge in many knives. But not all knives. Some designs and functionality are a waste of money to pay extra for this premium steel. Very cool review and surprisingly great price for this knife.

    Not gonna lie but haven't watched knife videos for awhile. And have sold most of my collection which was substantial 4- 64 gun, gun safes full top to bottom. From cheap to stupid expensive custom knives like Cordova, Lovelace and others. The reason is the prices like this and people actually saying oh that's a good price, when it's absurd.
    This is coming from a guy who had excess of $50k in knives. But what they are charging is crazy. I still have several magnacut knives it's good don't get me wrong . But it isn't like a miracle like some think. but I don't get drunk on all the new fads like most either. Just my opinion. And I know what they say about opinions. I think for absolute toughness I’d still take 3V, still has decent edge retention as well, huge trade off being it won’t be nearly as stainless as magnacut. Living in the PNW where rain and moisture is regular in the outdoors I’d probably go with magnacut for my needs personally. I’m glad to see this held up well, probably the best all around stainless option currently for this application. I think this might be a good “single knife option”

    I've made a few knives in Magnacut with a target harness of 62 HRC. I think that's the sweet spot for a woods knife. You get a reasonably tough knife with very good edge retention and excellent corrosion resistance. If it was a kitchen knife I'd go for 63-64 HRC.

    I have a couple of knives in that size range. when I do carry them, it has to be in conjunction with something more reasonable, in the 4-1/2 to 6" range. while I do appreciate the capabilities of large knives, it is much less nimble for the small detail tasks that I do much more often than the huge chopping type tasks. I like the design of this knife a lot. the ones I mostly use in this range are the BK9, SCHF43 ( first gen) and the CRKT Half a chance ( yeah, it's 20 ounces, but does not feel it)

    I’m still a little skeptical on this large of a blade in magnacut. While I think the HRC is a solid choice at 62, I’d prefer this steel in like their 5.5 size since it’s such a great all around steel. I’d also like to see a non skeletonized tang in 6.5 and 8 since you know you’ll be chopping. I’d like to see the 45 lb. Weight test with the blade clamped further out from the tang as well, but thanks for your content! Another great vid.

    G'day Aaron, right up my alley for a primary blade on the trail. Not sure I'd go with a Magnacut version as a first foray into this steel, I'd probably go with 3V on this design and I'm sure 1095 would be fine too. Anyway, always great to have options.
    300+ USD is getting up there, but some knives are just worth it IMO. Personally I'd spend that sorta dough on a proper survival tool such as this, rather than a little fella 6 in. or less.

      And I’ll just depends on the size of Knife as well as when I get it. A little mini Fix blade doesn’t need that long to test out versus a giant 8 inch. Knife needs to see more testing. And if I did six months testing on every single Knife videos would only go up every six months or so.

They’ve sold a few thousand knives at this point and never had that issue I am aware of. On their website if it says in stock it’s in stock and will ship in just a few days if they don’t have it, it’ll say out of stock no pre-order silliness.

    Nice knife but I would take a hatchet (Fiskars x7) and a 4-4.5 inch knife instead on a deep woods excursion. The hatchet is 10 times more functional and 1/10th the cost. The smaller knife is MUCH better at food prep, both store bought and wild caught.

    Also, I don’t think your bag hanging test is worth much. Have you seen how much weight cold steel hangs off their FOLDERS? Hundreds of poounds. I don’t think a magnacut fixed blade cares about 45 pounds. Maybe try 200-300 pounds? Even then I doubt it would hurt it

    I think the AK8 is too big. The big ones especially hurt & fatigues my hand during heavy use. I much prefer the AK3 which is a much more reasonable, respectable, and just all around better size. Despite its smaller size it’s all about how you use it. Yea we’re talking about knives.

    Good video, but design is flawed. Choil indicates designer does not know what handle is for. Secondly , super steel requires super stone to sharpen. Give me 01, 1095, or 80crv2. I can sharpen those on a wet rock or leather belt.

    • @gideonstactical
      @gideonstactical  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much, I will have to disagree on two points. First any knife over 6 inches should have a choil unless it’s strictly a thin machete for clearing under growth. Second, if you haven’t used MagnaCut you will be surprised. I can easily put an edge back on MagnaCut with my worksharp field sharpener. Much easier than m390 or Elmax steels. Similar to s35vn from my experience to resharpen. YMMV

    • @timbryan9701
      @timbryan9701 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@gideonstactical Thank you for your reply. Choils to me make no sense as I see no value in losing the first inch of blade to create a spot for your finger to sit right next to razor sharp steel. Secondly, what are you gaining by this? Maybe another inch of grip at the expense of the first inch of blade. Perhaps you might consider making a video on your knife preferences explaining, in greater detail, your inclination for choils on a larger blade? Might be a worthwhile subject..

    I don't get why everyone believes that our steel is good. It is bad steel and I know that my dad used steel filet blades in his beef Packing job for only a few months bcz they broke and shattered by a heavy user cutting beef loin and deboning the rib and side loin of a cow. The only knives and brands that lasted in truly heavy use and my sharpened my dad's knives so well it cut through the chain mail he wore at his job as a younger man. He used Swiss and Spanish steel knives. I've some Spanish and Italian steel knives to. But as my knowledge and practical application I've used different knife steels and makers. Us steel stinks!!!

But every beef packing plant in my big famous cattle city tried us made knives. Us made knives aren't good. I've gone to South Dakota USA and bought $500 us famous smiths carbon steel crio tempered cobalt and s35vn hand forged knives and us spring steel knives made in the USA in Montana and South Dakota etc. They all couldn't hold an edge and sharpening them like I know how to get supreme sharpness on a goof knife. Like I can sharpen my knives to cut through bisom and bull bone. I cN sharpen knives amazingly well. I've had Italian and Spanish knives that never chiped or rolled.
