  • How this 60 year old found fulfilling jobs.
    It took me most of my life to figure out what kind of job was right for me. I started over many times and each time I learned some valuable things about myself. A few years ago I started my own small business based off of what I love to do, which is thrifting. I hope you will follow this almost 60 year old beginner as I strive to find purpose and joy in my life.

    Changing jobs or change, in general, is never comfortable. Just embrace the discomfort and the learning curve. It's good for the mind and body to shake ourselves out of our comfort zones.

    I always like dogs and I thought it was going to be my dream job being a dog sitter and having my own business. Man was I SO wrong. It was a total prison at home, clients who abandoned dogs on me, dogs who ran away..... I had no personal life or space. After 5 years I decided that was not making me happy anymore. At 41, alone, and with all my expenses I started all over again. That's life 🤗☀️

    I've changed careers several times and had a number of jobs within each career, including being a high school English teacher and a paralegal, which is my current occupation. I'm still "finding myself" at 60. My goal is to never stop growing. I do find, however, that I don't get a lot of joy or satisfaction out of working for others any longer. I want to work for me and grow my own business, i.e., reselling, which I do part-time. I'm even considering starting a TH-cam channel! It's important to have a sense of accomplishment and to take control of your own destiny. You seem to have done a wonderful job of evolving and finding the joy in life, and "work." Thanks for the inspiring videos! 🙂

    I had a few jobs when I was very young. From age 21 to 63, worked for a large company, earned a pension. Because I was a single parent, I held onto the job with blood sweat and tears. I can say, it was more survival than enjoyment. I dealt with backstabbing and office politics. I would do something different if I had a do over. I’m afraid of working again so I am doing the reselling business and I do enjoy it. So much to learn. Thanks for your video.

    Hi Dana! I'm a fellow reseller from the Tech Patreon group. I always enjoyed your comments on the clothing calls; you come across as thoughtful and insightful. I believe your appeal stems from a startling realization for most of us that life is not a straight line. If you could talk to your younger self to reassure her that she will survive the curve balls and disasters- that its ok to be confused, overwhelmed, bored, and thrilled in the same week. 20 somethings could really benefit from hearing your life stories. Keep up the great work!

    Thanks for this video, Dana. It’s filled with timeless and sound advice. I wanted to add a thought from my own experience, especially as someone who went back to study later in life. I found that, for some of us, early career choices were about survival more than passion, leading to jobs that drained us. As a more mature person now, I've realised that while ageism isn't always overt (since it’s against the law), it can still subtly impact opportunities. It creates a unique challenge for those of us putting in the effort to re-train and update our skills but finding that age can still be a barrier. This dynamic is complex and not always discussed, but I really appreciate your insights. Thanks again for your thoughtful content!

    Yes, the best research is to talk to people in the job you're considering. I'm trying to guess who that attorney was! I worked as a paralegal in Oakland. It's actually a pretty small world when you're in it. Everybody talks. My firm was really great but we had a few stinkers too. I worked with a big career coach in the bay area and she told me to stop hunting for the perfect job. She predicted I would continue to get bored easily and should get better at embracing who I am. And she said it's so important to really understand what you hate. I met with her for a few months and it changed my life. She gave me a ton of tests. And in the end she was right. I had sooo many great jobs and was always getting new certificates and training and trying new things. I actually feel like all of it helps me be a better ebay seller. Networking is the best way to get hired. I've hired a bunch of people and referrals make it so easy. Attitude was always more important to me than skills. And ability to learn.

    • @danafindwell
      @danafindwell  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It really is super helpful to hear about your job history and work with the coach, Jackie, thank you! Here's a hint, her intitials are AW. The best lawyer i met in Oakland is Alexandra Easley, have you heard of her? Thanks so much for your wonderful comment, I really appreciate you! 🥰

    • @jackiegerarde9938
      @jackiegerarde9938 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @danafindwell haha I think AW a disney character right? Nightmare. AE is on youngish side and I don't know about her. Good attorneys are out there for sure. I feel lucky that I have a strong network for advice now and then. Accountants too. Networking makes life so much easier. I was resistant for many years because I'm an introvert but that just means I need time to recover after socializing. You can learn to do almost anything. I hired people without almost no current skills but their ability to learn was high. And motivation. It's such a nightmare to find the right people. If job seekers understood this and put themselves in the shoes of the interviewer they might lose all anxiety. But going in cold with a referral is tough. I'm loving your new content. I think your channel is going to explode. And just some advice on your store. You've said it's been tough to grow because you sell what you list. Think about what you can pick up that's lower asp and slightly lower sell through or higher asp and slower sell through. They have to be solid items of course. So even dumb polo shirts. If you get 50 extra listings up it makes a difference. I know space is an issue. But that number of total items listed makes a difference. I tell people not to cross list until store at desired size or you'll sell too much!

    • @danafindwell
      @danafindwell  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@jackiegerarde9938 Wow, you know who AW is, thats crazy!! Good to know that she is known to be a disaster...i didn't think it was me but sometimes you don't know! Hi, there are plenty of TH-cam channels that show, step by step, how to use various programs including Excel. If you buy an older, used copy so you don't have to pay for an Excel subscription, it will do pretty much anything you need. There are also classes to help adults our age brush up on our computer skills, and they include Microsoft and Adobe programs. Check out your library, your community college, and talk to a social worker who could point you in a direction. You are looking for a job training and a skills update program. Also, Google's Docs is very similar to Excel, and they have online tutorials. If you can do one, those skills will transfer to the other with minor changes. Good luck!

      @doryknits6741 I normally would say no to the Facebook or other social media however, their groups may offer some direction. Whether it's job hunting in your 40s, job hunting for women, for PTSD, etc.
      Also, getting your feet wet with volunteering even if 5 hours a month counts. And I use that opportunity to talk with others in that organization about changing careers or gathering more resources for yourself. Remember it's not what you know but who.
      Hope this helps

      Excell is all over TH-cam and you can download for a free trial to learn. I work as an eligibility Specialist for the State I live in, I work IN spreadsheets that are already set up by someone else and hardly ever have to set one up from scratch. You'd be surprised how many jobs are exactly like mine. Don't let 1 program stop you, I'm sure you are better at maybe writing, so use that as your strength when applying or whatever that strength is.

    I have had such a hard time trying to figure out my work situation, im going to do the exercise you showed, thank you. Also thanks for sharing about how you trained as a paralegal then realised it wasnt a good fit. I had the same experience with teaching, I did a PGCE here in the UK but it was horrendously stressful and made me ill (It's a 3 year degree crammed into one year). I qualified but by then I knew the job wasn't a good fit for me, I couldnt sleep every time I was about to take a class. I've felt big shame about that experience and haven't worked much since, it made me feel incapable. I need and want to return to work again so I'm reviewing my options. I think there should be more focus on jobs and careers, self employment and finances in schools. It's good at least that retraining is always possible for many jobs. I'm currently weighing up my passion of self employed textile design and illustration with retraining in IT. I also considered trades but volunteering I've done indicates I wouldn't have the physical energy or health to do a trade.

My longest job was about 2 years and 10 months, two companies ago. I was hired by my former employer for 5 months laid off and rehired a year later, and stayed for 1 year. My late father always feared my instability, but super proud of my current employer, due to it's brand in my city, a well known academic medical hospital. The current job I have a pretty has good flex with some autonomy. I would like to be my business owner, maybe a recruitment agency or sales pipeline building. I'm really happy your dad is proud of your current situation, it sounds like an awesome job. And its great to have a goal to start your own business one day, you'll love it! Thanks so much for your wonderful comment, I really appreciate you! 🥰

    I’ve had over 60 jobs and I don’t want another one!
    But everything just keeps going up, especially things like insurance that you just pay and get nothing for it.

    Hi Dana, This is a great video! I love your energy. I'm looking for any part time online work that has a flexible schedule. I have chronic health issues and can be hospitalized or too sick to work at times. Also, I live in SE Asia to keep my costs down. Do you know of any websites to try? Thank the s o much!

      Hi TJ! Have you tried Upwork or Fiverr? If you do online work such as copywriting, design, and probably other things, you can get hired per project. It might be a good fit for you? Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback, i appreciate it so much! 🥰
