I came to watch for the first time in a while but nothing has improved. I miss pre-2016 Motortrend-a time when it was the best car review channel on TH-cam.

Well to be fair I went from a Pilot Super Sport in my ATS-V to the 4S. The 4S was overall the better tire and I was able to consistently pick up a few 10ths at Summit. However where the 4S really made the difference was in cold and wet weather. While I wouldn't exactly say it's a good tire in the rain it definitely isn't butt clenching bad like the Super Sports can be with just a little tread wear. Really driving the Super Sports in any moderate rain is like a suicide mission. Another tire I can compare it to that I think spans the middle is the Firestone Indy 500. Must better in the rain than either tire, but slower at the track by almost a second.
This being a paid advertisement makes the data suspect and worthless.

I have a 1000hp GT-R, and did a 1:42 at Willow Springs. Felt like I was flying!
This result by Randy is absolutely incredible. The speed he carries thru that last big turn before the straight is incredible. Talent and balls of steel.
I think Gtr is too heavy for willow spring. 1:42 is not bad tho.
I was just there this week and also did a 1:42 in my 2008 Mazdaspeed 3. Hoping to get down under 1:40 next time I go.
Inexpensive does not necessarily mean bad tires. They should have named the brand they used.

@@sixbone No. It felt like a commercial for tirerack and michelin tires. I understand the importance of good tires for the track, but saying "inexpensive" or "bargain" tires are much slower than expensive tires, is not a fair comparison.

i think they don't want to say baf against any other brand and use inexpensive word but they could have used normal tire or regular tire or something else then inexpensive word.
They probably used the same tires. Just did a bs editing and commentary.
I only watch your content now when Pobst is on. I really enjoyed the stuff you guys used to put out but these days its all obvious paid ads for cars or fluff content.

Yes. I'd like to see a comparison of expensive Michelin track tires with cheaper track tires from Kumho or Toyo. I always get sticker shock with Michelins and go for the cheaper tires. I doubt the Michelins are much faster, if at all. I've had a lot of fun on Toyo R888's.
@@andyharman3022 Nankang AR-1(100 treadweear) tires are avialable in the C8 stock sizes, have more grip, and are slower to heat cycle out than the R888R(100 treadwear), but the R888R tire has a more gradual release of traction around corners. The Nankang AR-1 might have to be ordered in from a non local dealer in the US.

Pad it with other stuff, but the half hour reviews that consisted of 20 minutes with Randy were the content that would make me buy stuff from sponsors, or consider paying money for MotorTrendOnDemand

5 seconds is a HUGE difference, the difference between a track tire and street tire. I took a street tire to COTA once in my EVO X. I was drifting around for 3 full days. Very fun, but also slow. The tires were beat to chunky slicks. Drove back 1,000 miles home and even hit a blizzard. Fun times.
This is kinda the reason I don't watch motortrend as much anymore. This was just a 8 minute commercial and gives no reference.
You know, from some angles, that Corvette reminds me A LOT of the Ferrari 360 Modena, only with angles instead of curves - and a little messy at the rear. Looks nice!

As good as the 4S tyres are, I'd be swapping to Cup 2S as quick as I could. Another significant step up in performance guaranteed.
That was pretty awesome and the Vette sounded mean, who else but Randy Pobst to give you an honest, clear cut assessment of the performance.

The right tires will make a HUGE difference as the C8 idles away from the suntan parlor, the Tommy Bahama outlet, and then motors over the speed bumps at the golf course parking lot.
Surely it's in the consumer interest to know what the crappy tires were?
I'm sure the manufacturer of those tires appreciates you calling them "crappy".

You should have tested it compared to the AT3 All Season tires on base C8.
Regardless if this is a commercial, Randy always puts his best foot forward no matter what hes driving or equipment, i trust this data but I wouldnt buy it unless i needed to

Not sure. But I’d guess a set of RE71s are comparable if not cheaper than the Michelins and much faster. Nice commercial.
Re-71’s are an autocross tire, they like to overheat on track driving.
@@doubled8247 this video is about a singe lap time and how these tires are better for setting a single lap. RE71s or any autox tire, you pick the brand, will run several laps before they overheat. Even a Hoosier A6/A7 can run multiple laps before getting greasy. This is a paid promotion. Notice the black and white text stating it.

Engineering mades a difference, on that level. You gotta know what your gonna do with the car. It makes a difference in what to buy for it

In case anyone is wondering about Tire Rack, I've ordered autocross tires (BFG R1) from them. The tires arrived promptly, and they made the autocross experience much more fun. It's a good company.
Love the C8 as well as all corvettes. favorite car. Love Chevrolet.
It reminds me of an updated Ferrari F-355 with a Chevy Motor. It's a great design.
That synchronization of the speedometer, sound and takes from the tracks - perfect ;P at the last straight 4:23, he should be gaining speed quite fast instead it takes 3 second to go from 92 to 100 mph, same with the "inexpensive" tyres

I can't get past the front emblem not being centered between the racing stripes.
Honestly love the car but it's hard to un-see. The tip of the emblem actually aligns well with the crown line, it's the stripes that are off. They were applied too far toward the passenger side. 🤦♂️

For those banging on this being a commercial. Traditional car magazines are in real danger of not surviving and I will not bang on them for trying to make some money. Plus this is a commercial that has some decent driving and content so there is that. Everyone wants everything for free and it just cannot happen.
One can and should argue if "magazines" should or will exist. Car TH-camrs are often more entertaining and offer better content with almost no overhead.
I would like to see this car with Toyo R888rs, I think they would put down a better time.
1.28 in Willow Springs is very slow! The C7 Z06 did this in 2011 in 1.20,30... did they change the track configuration?
This corvette is a second or so slower than the 2017 Grand Sport and 911 Carrera S... also think that Porsche had the same tires as the corvette here does. 😬

Don’t you just love how even on bad tires this car beats an AMG GTS, (992) 911 Carrera S, Shelby GT350R, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, M4 GTS, R8 V10 Plus, Acura NSX, GTR, 570s, etc. THE BAD TIRES!!!!! That goes to show that they did a great job and the other models are going to be even better 😈
Where are you getting your information from? I'm looking at the Big Willow leader board lap times from a previous video right now. 570s: 1.27.21, AMG GTS: 1:28.12. Ford GT350R 1:28.29. All faster than the C8 on the 4s tires, never mind the budget tires. Even the Camaro SS 1LE posted a faster lap time than the C8 at 1:28.29. I'm not knocking the C8. I think it's an awesome car. But 1:28.48 is not a great time. Seems like it should be able to do much better.

But looking Motor Trend past lap data set by Randy Pobst, at Big Willow, where the video was filmed (this is not Laguna Seca), the C8 is slower than all of those cars I listed that I could find from your list. Seems to me like something is off with the C8 lap times.

For reference, I had a ride along in an LMP2 car that is only about 5 seconds faster per lap. I just about crapped my pants.

Flawed premise. People won't buy a new C8 and then go buy cheap tires to put on it. They would be more likely to buy soft compound tires for track days. Do a test with soft compound track tires.

What do you mean worked hand in hand with Corvette to develop those tires? The 4S came out like 4 years ago.
OEM's can if they want to, have front and rear specific tires being mid engined, tire compound/tread depth(widebody C7 corvettes), wider like the 305/30r20's(on 20×12's and 315 in width but 305/30r20 in diameter) on the 991.2 Porsche GT3 or narrower on the 305/30r19's(front 19×10.5 rear 19x11 and 295 in width but 305/30r19 in diameter) 2018+ Mustang GT PP2.
Hot laps with Randy Pobst is not on Motortrend. Don't bother looking

i honestly don't like the 4S. Michelins and Continentals typically have soft sidealls compared to Bridgestone, for example. The Sport Cup 2 has a softer sidewall than RE71R.
I think it would make even more of a difference with a less experienced track driver
No doubt the Michelins had some miles on them before the test. Wouldn't it have been a fairer test if the "cheap" tires been run in a bit first?

For the average street driver they might never notice the difference. How would the perform after 5,000 miles?
