  • Uber Lyft stock. It's not even close. Uber is absolutely dominating the ride sharing market and they've successfully expanded into delivery and freight as well. The big question is if Lyft stock has any value remaining. We happen to think Lyft stock is a value trap, and the opportunity cost of not investing in Uber should make any investor immediately gravitate towards the leader. If you think Uber is going to acquire Lyft, it hardly seems likely. Uber and Lyft are direct competitors in the biggest ride sharing market with Uber generating next to a billion dollars in operating cash flow last quarter while Lyft managed just a few million. The key takeaway from this presentation is that Uber might be worth a closer look to see what sort of opportunity remains for delivery and ride sharing.

Uber seems like a nice option for more developed countries and some government- friendly underdeveloped countries. In Argentina and Brazil, at least, I stay for away from them for safety reasons. Too shady still and too expensive. Ain’t getting into a tinted, unmarked car where I have to sit right next to the driver who could pull something on me. I like seeing the Taxi driver’s name, photo and ID number in case I need to report him. Besides, taxis now have apps that give you the price up-front and they’re considerably cheaper than Uber. Taxi’s final fare might actually be cheaper after arriving to destination than the app’s original estimate since they can find shorter routes than some weekend warrior who gets lost staring at a screen following GPS coordinates that are oftentimes wrong in confusing urban settings. In short, I have sorta been paying attention to Uber’s progress down here and it doesn’t seem that great, at least anecdotally. Maybe data-driven market research says otherwise, Idk. Uber’s still trying hard though! It’s kind of humorous watching them trying to slip under the radar under the watchful eye of the taxi unions. I wouldn’t want to get caught in a situation where a taxi driver starts chasing down an Uber that I’m riding in. Maybe this changes with considerable deregulation of the industry long term, but would be a considerable feat in my book in short term.

This is a great boots-on-the-ground report, thank you for sharing! The next step might be to look at the top markets for Uber considering the criteria you laid out - developed countries and government friendly underdeveloped countries. Indonesia is the fourth most populated country on this planet and that's where Uber has made a bet with Grab, among other countries in that region. Its competitor, GoJek, is the "everything app" in Indonesia that Elon Musk hopes to create with X. We'll likely do a follow-up piece on Uber to see what opportunity remains for them to capture given known constraints.
