- Taken from our archives (Lights Out DVD 2007) here is how to get the triangle choke when you are attempting to go for the arm bar (in the spider web position).

I am so glad to see videos of Ari again. Clear, concise, just the facts, no stories. He is by far my favourite of the submission 101 instructors. (no offense at all intended to the others, cause they are great too)
Props to the guy caring for the guy that refused to tap, telling the referee it popped and going slow giving the guy plenty of opportunity to tap.
its nice to have videos by ari again.
I've seen guys use their right legs to kick open the other guy's defending arms. Getting your head out from the hook and trapping the leg with it is another armbar defense, which is why this move is so sneaky. It chains a deceptively failed armbar attack, baits the guy to sit up to get out of danger, then puts him into a triangle in the transition.
i like this transition and use it when the opertunitiy arives but i would just like to add that i feel a little more comfortable grabing and holding onto my shin at the ankle when falling back. when you sneak that leg through and drop the other your opponent raises his head in defence to the armbar this is when you reach behind his head and grab your ankle (not foot because you can hurt your own ankle) and fall back. this keeps everything tight and sinking the triangle a little easier.
If you sit there wasting energy prying the arm the opponent can easily counter that that's why this is such a good video...
Nice. That was always my tester too. When no one else was around...
awesome !
i love all your videos, thanks a lot.
gah why didnt i think of doing this? soo much better than wasting energy trying to pry the arm
Something i noticed is you did not use your right arm to control his leg in spiderweb position, and during the final demo you actually used your right hand to help your foot into position. I thought you were always supposed to keep this leg controlled until you had your foot through into triangle position, at which point it is alright to switch your controlling arm because him trying to turn to his knees makes the triangle easier for you to apply.
This was not a 10th Planet set up (this video is a couple years old). It is just a standard set up from side control. There are MANY ways and theories to set up the triangle from here...this is just one.
I see lots of people get this in rolling all the time and I am sure there is footage out there in a tourney. This isn't complicated by any means and works really well when you have the spider web position.
beauty in simplicity
I suggest you use on of your hands that is holding the arm and control the head on your way down. You are giving up position to get the triangle, so you don't want him to be able to sit up out of it.
Could be better by gripping the leg though, since as soon as the body-hook lifts to kick through, most guys will start the hitch-hiker escape and you want to bait him to go the other way with the sit-up escape once clearing the head instead. So, the move is perfect if combined with a grip on the knee.
so simple. Thanks for sharing!
nice move!
Been doing BJJ for a while(and just for the fun of it btw!)and I've never seen this technique!
Cant wait to try it!!!
i smiled, such a sneaky technique
wow thats a beautiful move
Very nice, might try it.
if only i knew about this last week XD
Wow, thats awesome.
wow that is pretty sneaky, love it! 5 stars!!!!!!!!!!
@DatSillyWabbit i guess if they are tired, all im saying is i have never seen nor have i been in a position like that for long. it just seems like the bottom guy would roll and get up then lay down and lock up to avoid an armbar...
Awe that's pretty nice. Get them to defend the arm bar mean while setting up the choke. o_o I don't see why more mma fighters don't use more sneaky moves like this instead of trying to power through for their subs and burn a lot of energy.
@JrPercusionist Used it last night; it worked beautifully.
That is so cool its like faking someone out
...riiiight... thats why they win the ADCC and Mundials every year without break.... magic!
excellent!
@PATRIOTS4272 Well, The trouble is, When you try and slide your leg between his arms and the front of his chest, Because of the short distance you have to bend your knee and lean yourself back, The moment you do this, The opponent could quickly grab your foot.
important to grab the shin while setting up though. Or a strong guy can posture out.
Ur my hero
@AngeldeMuerte187 That Might be So but then again you have to look at it differently too. That is just bbj but in mma the guy going for the sub has to be weary of the other guy breaking free for various reasons I've seen fights where guys have the submission and the fight should be over prime example Rampage vs Aurona. He had the sub and should of put Rampage to sleep but Rampage being as strong as he is just powered out of it with a slam. But like you said could be just a technical deficiency
that's pretty cool. i wanna try it.
I think if I saw this while I was still taking classes I could have earned a
Brilliant
dope thx!!
@JrPercusionist There are videos of this being done in actual MMA matches
lovin it
A twofer...brilliant.
so if you go to lean back for the triangle but he lets go of the arm you can finish off the armbar still right?
just last night I seen others fight and fight for the arm (he was a green belt). my son 12 just started we will work on this move thands.
@JrPercusionist I got this on somebody, he was more concerned with defending the arm bar, didnt even see it coming.
beast!!
Where is all this done?
@lordrabbit16 lol who doesnt?? you ever try pulling off an armbar from mount and theyre just holding onto it with the other. Kinda frustrating. Personally i like the double armbar better but the triangle works.
have you ever done this actually during a match?
Lol I taught this today in my beginners jits class
nice i like doing this move 2 my friends when we mess around lol
@yassir228685 more of a "help them get choked" pull, than a crank.
i think there's only one red belt in BJJ, and that was one of the original Gracies, but true, that would be pretty ba
Decent vid :D
Tnx n_n
nice nice nice!
the Gracies are the only ones that can be Red belt in Bjj for some secretes techniques I think Rickson Gracie pass to Red Belt in this months or something
hello my friend im here in your house dropping my gift to you...thanks for rising my home...lets stay connected..thanks
What if he opens his hands?
brown belt got me 3 times in one 6 min roll and at the end I was still like how did he do that.... now I know
ok thats great ... but who the heck ever ends up in a position like that?
@TheSleeze That wasn't even a spiderweb.
@xmoroseguyx then u just grab his hand closest 2 u and do the arm bar
I think if I saw this while I was still taking classes I could have earned a lot more submission grappling wins
What i wana know is how to get outa an arm bar
if you know what you were doing, you won't get tossed....
I envy you....
It is a divine law that all Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practicioners we all try all these on our girlfriends Amen
damn i never thougth of tht my arm got dislocated from an armbar once
@nate18871 dont get in it.
lol
@pgtv69 hehehe
