      I’ve done local theater productions for 5 years. Going to start locally by getting a talent agent first then doing regional theater and working with local filmmakers in my hometown and neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota then end up in Los Angeles, California or Atlanta, Georgia. I’m praying to the grace of god to network.

    "Take a class, take a class, take a class." That's my go-to phrase nowadays for beginning actors because being in a good class will allow you to cultivate your craft as well as well as cultivate your relationships with like-minded people. Do your research, and get to know more people with the interest of getting to know them as individuals, not by their credits.

    I recently found out that someone opened up an acting academy in my town. When I went to my first improv class I discovered that the owner has contacts with the casting directors etc... at the studios in a nearby city. So excited.

    This is extremely helpful , and made me understand a lot of things, so thank you for that. With your explanation of networking with people your age and those who are trying to do the same as you, I realized that I've actually been doing it a little, without noticing. A little bit differently though, you said that you should be starting with people near you and not those thousands of miles away, but that's not quite possible for me, since I live in a country with pretty much no acting, and any actors I know. There's like actually nothing in here, I've done research, but there's truly nothing. I've been talking with a couple actors from LA though, since I'm planning to move there in just a couple years, it's been quite nice and informative.
    Anyway, thank you for all the tips and help you give us. I'll definitely check out the Preparation guide you talked about.

    "I thought there were no opportunities for actors in Cleveland, OH" You were right Kurt... Opportunity aside, its very difficult to stay committed in the long run if you don't have that peer group you came up with. I stopped acting a couple years ago because the group of people I used to see regularly on auditions gradually disappeared; they either moved on to bigger and better things like yourself or they grew disillusioned and quit.

    Hi Kurt,
    This is excellent advice that I've used. I've gotten so many indie film offers from people I networked with and in return I gave them advice on reps and classes.
    QUESTION: it's true that we become the average of the people that we spend the most time with. I'm looking to level up my own circle. I've done costars and many indies but I need to surround myself with guest stars/recurring and regulars actors. I don't see them in the classes I'm in. Where can I find them and join that circle?

    Kurt, do you feel having your awesome TH-cam channel helped you “get noticed” by CD’s? I love your advice on helping others. Even though I have little to offer, when on set in holding areas for example, (pre-pandemic, but getting easier to sit near other actors now), I always find there are some who are really just starting out and I do have websites, agencies, advice to give!

    • @ActingCareerCenter
      @ActingCareerCenter  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My TH-cam channel didn't start gaining popularity until last year (2020). By then, most of the CD's in Atlanta already knew who I was. So I'm not sure how much it helps me at this point. Maybe in the future it will help me break into other markets.

  • @thewizereview4183
    @thewizereview4183 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love your vids! Can you talk about how an actor can get quality classes to put on their resume if they dont live in a big market? For example I live in Kansas City . There's acting classes here but I'm not sure when casting/directors look at my resume they might not find my training creditable because the instructor are not notable acting schools like the one you went to in Ohio.
    Thanks buddy

    • @ktoth29
      @ktoth29 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not to disparage the venerable Houde School of Acting, but when I went there it was just a lady in a rented storefront. The reputation was built up over time, largely because of Kurt and other students who moved to a larger market. If there are any local casting directors call them and ask who they recommend. I used to drive from Cleveland to Pittsburgh to take classes because that's where the closest CD was... beyond that the stock advice is community theater; although generally the training is very poor because its geared toward new actors.

      In my opinion, you should select your acting school based on the quality of instruction rather than how notable or recognizable it is. The most important thing is that they teach you the skills you need to become a good actor. Only very recently did my school in Ohio become recognized outside of the state. When I moved to Atlanta 5 years ago, none of the agents or casting directors down here recognized the name of the school. But they could tell based on my auditions that I must have gotten some excellent training and that's all that matters.

    I am. I talk to every industry person I can. And unless I really don't like them or something they do I'll say the words.

    Hey @kurt @Acting_Career_Center can you make a video on how to learn accent or get the accent for character , specially for foreigner actors.

      I don't really teach accents. There are other youtube channels that specifically teach that.

    Hello Kurt,
    I would like to ask you a question. Which acting technique do you recommend or think is the easiest to get into character for beginners who just started acting

      I can't tell you which one is best because I haven't studied all of the techniques. I studied the Meisner technique and I found it very helpful

    I got my go-to headshot photographer from one of my acting teachers, a Boston local option in case for auditions/projects by being friends with another Boston actor (I'm on the west coast), my background role via Central Casting that made me SAG eligible from another actor's recommendation, and an audition from another casting director who knew me from another project she booked me 6 months ago.
    As much as I'd love to get an agent referral at some point down the line, I'm making use of all I can around me now without stressing about it! If I keep training and booking on my own, I will eventually get the materials and opportunities. :)

      My goodness, yes! You MUST have a headshot! I can't believe the number of beginning actors without a headshot. And a resume.

    I have a question:
    Is it better do acting classes with other people or on zoom with an acting coach/teacher?

      I would say acting classes with other people! In person Experience will be far greater than just the knowledge itself . This is my opinion though!
