A very Rough Guide to Milton Keynes 1993

  • So a bit of background about this video. Back in 1993 (we think January to March time), my best friend Cameron and I decided to do a tour of Milton Keynes and where we worked for our friend Lincoln who had moved back to Hong Kong and my friend Debbie (Deb) who had moved back to Australia.
I'm not sure they even got to see this but I guess they will once it goes live. We still keep in contact with them and they still live in Hong Kong and Australia.
Looking at the video I think it was recorded on a Saturday during the winter months. Evesham Micros where I used to work was open until 7pm on a Saturday and towards the end of the video, you see us go back to the store when it's dark. The daytime scenes are quite busy and that makes me think, it had to be recorded on a Saturday, probably in November. It looks like November weather.
Cameron at the time worked for Touche Ross (now Deloitte) in their computer room. So he had a card that got us into the building for a quick tour. No idea how we got onto the roof but I guess back in the day, no one cared.
I worked for Evesham Micros in the support department at the Milton Keynes Branch. It's great seeing all those big box products on the shelves. Nowadays, you download everything and computer monitors are massively "bigger" but super light. I even remember having a separate computer for email (if I remembered to turn it on). No one knew what email was for and it was hardly used.
Hope everyone enjoys it. Please check out my other video from years gone by in Milton Keynes

    10:49 - Store Room
11:27 - Office and staff (baggy shirts were all the style back then)
13:03 - The infamous empty box area. Any product out on display, we kept the box and it was stored here. Took forever to find one if you sold a display model.

    13:36 - Showroom
13:43 - Abbey National Building (aka Santander)

14:53 - Ordering at the drive-thru. Laughable what we ordered. Nowadays it would be so much more food.
15:35 - Chicago Rock Cafe/Central Milton Keynes Bus station
15:58 - Central Milton Keynes Train Station
17:05 - Saxon Street, heading towards Springfield
    17:55 - Driving into Springfield
18:40 - Driving towards Tesco at Kingston
20:05 - Kingston Shopping District in the distance
    21:33 - Inside Kingston Shopping
21:53 - Nighttime driving up a city centre
    23:16 - Witan Court/Evesham Micros - Late evening
    23:26 - Evesham Micros Showroom
23:50 - More City Centre driving
24:09 - Before contactless payments, we had to get cash out. How massive is this machine at Midland Bank
24:31 - Iconic Point Cinema in Milton Keynes
    24:50 - More driving

This was brilliant. I was born in MK and raised in Conniburrow. I now live in Boston, USA so to put the MK i knew into context for my mates over here, this video was perfect. The footage of the inside of the Point was nostalgic. What a town it was to grow up in, looks & feels vastly different yet oddly quite similar.

You never forget your roots of being born and raised in Milton Keynes and it stays in your heart no matter where you live in the world. You live in Boston USA (been there as well, really nice city) and I live somewhere in Eastern Europe but we are MK Boys through and through.
MK has changed a lot over the years but it will always be my hometown and yours.

What a time to be alive, 1993 was a great year, used to go to the weekly Rock club in The Point on a Thursday night, other nights we would just cruise around the City (like you boys) and take the occasional visit to Sams Kebabs or over to Jeff's van outside the Blacksmiths on Downs Barn. Doesnt seem like 5 minutes ago seeing this awesome footage so thankyou for letting me relive it once again!

Jon - Thanks. Yes, Sam Kebabs made the best burgers. Used to go there in the evening during the week. Out of interest, you mention Jeff's Van outside the Blacksmiths. My older brother is called Jeff and had a burger van around that time. He used to be outside the cinema at Bletchley and Razzells in Bletchley. I did ask I'm if he ever did go outside the Blacksmiths but he said he can't remember.
Even though the video is more personal to me and my friend in it, it's nice to see so many people enjoying the memories. I guess I didn't do anything different than what other people did; driving our cars, hanging out with friends having a good time. No mobile phones, no internet, living at home with your parents.

I remember back when the shopping centre opened (79) it felt quite space aged and clean and there wasn't anything else like it. It had palm trees inside, by the 90s it was starting to show it's age. Fond memories of "The Point" it was an iconic building, even if the spacial design of it was completely flawed :) It's due to be demolished soon (if not already)

    Hi Leonard,
This is another excellent video of MK, the cars that were on the road have changed and this video is an excellent piece of history of life back then. There were more socialising and a very lively atmosphere. Life was much more simpler and everything in the video shows all buildings are all clean than it is today as there way more traffic on the roads, chaos, a lot more to relying on phones, vandalism, loads of negative events like covid, wars and cost of living crisis. Though you don't work for EM any more instead Please can you do a driving tour of this place from the outside using same routes for us to see please? Thanks for the posting this and I look forward for more videos!

Wow! This really takes me back. Feels like yesterday I was standing in the Point cinema waiting for my girlfriend to show up. So strange how much has changed in those years, and yet so much of it is still there. Feels like they've actually done a good job of maintaining the spirit of the city without it becoming too "different". Although, I have to admit, the loss of the Point will be a major blow to the city and our nostalgia.
Thanks for sharing this, was a lovely trip down memory lane.

The main shopping centre is pretty much the same, same roads, same trees etc. Lots of new buildings and what were nice places to live, now they are run down. But that is normal for 25 years. At least we are a proper City now.

The good old days when you could drive past The Point, before they built 'The New Bit' and killed the old oak tree. I remember feeling sad about the Studio in Bletchley closing down, but happy about the shiny new multiplex at the city centre. I wonder how much longer the Xscape cinema will last, it's getting on a bit itself, now.

I love this so much...thank you for capturing this and sharing. I have a question as I've been doing a little of my own research. Do you recall a Bath & Body Works store opening or being around in 1994 in Milton Keynes? I have a TH-cam channel about Bath & Body Works and I love mall/retail history. I had purchased some 90s photographs of a Bath & Body Works store that I assumed was in America (since it's mainly an American store) but the caption says it was in Milton Keynes. The only Milton Keynes mall I can find is in the UK (you never know...sometimes US names things after UK stuff so I wasn't sure haha) If there was a Bath & Body Works store there during the 90s, my understanding is that Milton Keynes now only has a pop up Bath & Body Works situation rather than a full store. So I'm just trying to piece this together...any insight of your memories would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again for sharing this video, I loved watching it! 😊

There was definitely a Bath and body works store that opened in the shopping centre (around 1994/95) but I remember it being there for a very short time until it closed down. The only reason I remember is because my mum loved one of the products, which I still pick up for her now when I visit the US. Hope that helps!

Greatest 80s localised video on TH-cam? Ashes of Civilisation: Liverpool, 1985. I think it's intentional comedy. In fact, I'm certain of it. But it also makes the videos about MK, Inverness, Melton Mowbray, Peterboough, etc. feel like they're set in the Copa Cobana. Actually, it makes Pripyat/Cherrnobyl films look like the Copa Cobana. However, it's the Scousers who have the Barry Manilow haircuts.

That would be hard considering the Point is now closed, you can't drive along Midsummer without hitting the added shopping building and they probably no longer work for EM lol
There are a few other channels with driving/walking videos around CMK though, it's worth checking those out if you want a more recent view.
