    I have slight mental retardation I cannot remember details and things, so like when train at a new workplace, having people repeat themselves is a very bad thing i've learned in life, they get pissed off at me. So, when I train at a new job, I where a secret hidden camera system which is routed through fake glasses that way the camera will record everything I see. Then I review everything that the boss/manager showed me at work and try to memorize them before my next day on the job, and they will think I am a terrific employee because I've learned very fast and, at the end, they think I"m competent and I can keep my job! :D

    To borrow a computer analogy:
    If every computer ran Windows 10, we would consider that as normal. Autism is taking the same hardware and running Mac OS. You could even run Linux or a text version of Linux and seem very autistic.The machine is still fully operational, it just executes tasks differently. Mental retardation is like trying to run windows 10 on an old PC from 1993. Some are non-operational, while others are operational to some point but not enough to be productive

      @@WDBsirLocksight I speak a bit from experience regarding the self hurt part.
      ASDs in general have obsessive tendencies, but with the severe variant, it's often self harm as a hobby.
      I've seen first hand how many of them become fixated on shaving their eyebrows or scratching their legs to the point where you see their bare meat. Or just hitting themselves or others due to frustration about something. And using quotes from movies and memorable sound and musical cues as a means of communication due to usually being unable to talk.
      I think the severe variant of ASD is what sparked the confusion between that and MR/ID.
      Although imitation habits, obsessive tendencies, and repetitive behavior seem to be to the most obvious distinction between these two disorders.

      Fuck the iq test. The timed portions, and the stringent oversimplified question and answers ruin the chance for the test to actually be about intelligence, and it becomes more about wit and speed learning. It is difficult to actually understand something that is overly simplified on a flashcard. Took 2 of those long ass sot down tests, scored above average, and even the tester agreed with me that this test was more of a Job Employability test than an actual "Intelligence" Test. Albert Einstein was a slow ass, and hes widely revered as one of the most intelligent people to have shaped history.

    I liked this video but I got the impression that she was mentally arguing the answer instead of giving a concise definition but it also looks like she was caught off guard in a q & a during a presentation.
    My take on what she was saying is that Autism is the term you use when a person has several disabilities. The disabilities can be:
    * Social Difficulties
    * Repetitive Behavior
    * Language Impairment
    * Intellectual Disability, etc.
    and Mental Retardation is Exclusively a MEASUREMENT of Intellectual Disability.

    • @wemuk5170
      @wemuk5170 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Marco, you & this lady are both absolutely right. Autism has nothing to do with intellectual disability (mental retardation). Some autistics have no ID (MR) and they are referred to as having High Functioning Autism or Aspergers Syndrome. These autistics may/may not also have learning disorders which are NOT related to their intellect/intelligence such as dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia. Billionaire, Richard Branson, for example, has a learning disorder - dyslexia - and he is highly intelligent. On the other hand those autistics who have an extremely low intelligence level such as an average IQ of less than 70, like my son, has BOTH Autism and ID (MR). Autism and Intellectual Disability (MR) are totally separate diagnoses. The majority of autistics, statistically, have no ID (MR).

Or will I remain this way with others who're just like me?

      One thing I've learnt through being in the disability community are seeing those providers that say ID/DD can't do university or live alone (much less now since the Emplyment First movement) but I see a very different picture when they are thriving in there environment.
      It takes hard work and dedication yet doing things they way you do them with accommodations equals success.
      You may "fail" once or you may "fail" many times but if it wasn't for the 100 times Edison "failed" we wouldn't have lightbulbs.
      Better, think of every "failure" as a success and stepping stone to a greater you.

    So I would have to assume the main factors have to do with both mental age and awareness. I've seen peers who have qualities that are not age appropriate and I can tell they are on the spectrum, but they still have the ability to communicate ideas through talking and craft coping mechanisms on their own because they recognize that their behavior might not be seen as appropriate. They may not entirely be socially aware to the point where it can be embarassing to outsiders, but they still have the mental fortitude to come up with ideas and solutions to their problems, even if they need a little extra help. I would have to assume retardation has more to do with lack of both verbal skills and awareness, to the point that they need an adult at all times to do anything. I've also come across those kinds of peers and they need a ton of one on one help, to the point that you aren't even sure that they can make their own decissions because it feels like their helper makes most of the decisions for them.

      I agree with you that there is no difference. If you rewind the clock, any one with autism would have been diagnosed as being mentally retarded. However, now that today's society wants everyone and everything to be categorized in their own special box, and to get rid of the negative stigma attached to mental retardation, the powers that be created the word "autism" in an effort to prevent not so many children as being labeled as "retarded". Why do you think that the diagnoses of being autistic has skyrocketed while the diagnoses of being retarded has plummeted? It's an effort to remove the negative stigma attached to being retarded.

    • @smith1008
      @smith1008 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yea it's quite believable. There is a studied correlation between high iq and difficulty relating with peers and forming meaningful relationships. It usually becomes more apparent the higher the iq. Although that doesn't mean everykne with autism is smart.

    • @daviddalton2634
      @daviddalton2634 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Quite common actually. Another issue is that in many cases, those with autism are not able to communicate enough to accurately determine an IQ score. This is the fault of the device (testing, method, etc) of determining IQ. So if the autism is at a certain level, it becomes the primary diagnosis and is addressed by therapeutic intervention. IQ then becomes moot, and at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the level of support required by the person. As others mentioned, a large percentage of the population do not know the difference; but I would submit that a non-verbal individual may be unable to demonstrate skills due to their autism, not intellectual disability. This is why it becomes critical to provide an individual a means to communicate - sign language, language boards, etc. The, video above does not go into enough detail on how each are diagnosed. I have seen people with severe autism do some amazing things. A lot more goes on in their minds than they can possibly demonstrate because no device exists to cater to the individual needs of an individual with autism to accurately measure their level of intelligence. It may come down to molecular changes in the brain to really know if a person is truly intellectually disabled, but even then I have doubts about that. The brain is an amazing organ designed to compensate for its own weaknesses.

      Actually, associating autism with retardation is dichotomous thinking, in fact there are several intelligence disorder's that are out there and they exist because one isn't on the same level of what's normal. An I.Q. of 100 is normal. An I.Q. of 130+ Just is not. The same thing applies to IQ of 80 and below.
      Given the fact that people relate through self-reflection than we can conclude that the inability to relate really does set the worlds of the gifted and the average apart. It hurts us because people fear the things that they can't understand. ( Example, The Salem Trials ). It helps us because we can reason.
      Now, there are many INTP's who have been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and we tend to do the best at intelligence tests. In fact, I am in a high IQ society and Randy Myers, the owner has Asperger's. Some people suspect that I have Asperger's. There are also people who have it, and they can be considered retarded as well.
      So, Autism != retarded. It's always misunderstood but it provides no means to evaluate somebodies Intelligence.

      I don't appreciate being thrown out there like this because people live in a very limited scope of reality and it's called: "What they think reality is." I wish you would let me refute the opportunity to be a part of that.
      Since you did invite me though, I will begin here:
      This misinterpretation of psychology is the scariest thing that I have observed. The problem is that "mental illness" is nothing more than an acquired perception that derives from the lacking of self esteem because there isn't much relation, therefore there is no acceptance. The reality is that many artists are schizophrenics. The majorly depressed seem to be a bit more analytic. Thomas Jefferson had Bipolor, Vets with PTSD can make great guards, Isaac Newton sounded like he ...had a bit of everything, and Einstein is thought to be autistic? Ever thought, what is sick in this world is actually right and the question pertains to the mental state in regards to the purpose? ( Fit to mother? ). Questioning sanity has been depreciated. Those that don't fit are also considered "Misguided" because there is a place they do.
      That's the problem with the world. The perspective of a bigger picture has gone and we all want to be individuals but individuals work better as a team and whenever we forget about our role or have issues acknowledging it, then it is safe to assume we will struggle with self esteem. Then we pity those that crack and deem them "Mentally Ill". Whenever they aren't sicker than me or you for that matter.
      ==========================================================================================
      Stop trying to convince the outsiders that we are fine because they can't understand. Keep me concealed in my IQ Societies. It's a world where being an idiot is the average. The average can't relate if relating is done through self reflection and since I don't share there standings on a continuum then I can't be understood. If that isn't done and people can only except the things that they understand than its best that we quit trying and resort to the people who share my abilities. Special or Not!
      Thanks...

      So what you're saying, is that it's normal to look for food when you're hungry?

      I agree - but the question was asked and the world is full of ignorance. Sometimes you have to stop and address the ignorance with teaching and I wanted to know that if someone had this question, the right answer was available.

      There's a lot of similarities, actually.
      But there are differences that make ASD distinct. Especially regarding repetitive behavior, and the tendency to obsess over certain things, sometimes subconsciously.
      Someone who has severe ASD especially understandably adds to the confusion between the two.

    Sorry but the fact the she quotes the old school Definition of IQ as intelligence age divided by living age Times 100 is disqualifying her as a psychologist because it falsely ruins peoples confidence.
    Why ? Do you really Think a 30 year old only has 50 IQ if he "only" scores as well as a 15 year old ? That would put him as severely disabled... that would imply that only one out of 100 Boys of 15 years of age are ABLE enough to provide for themselves and cannot even understand the simplest arithmemtical Operation.. and is this the case ?

      Good point.
      There are many variations of intelligence. Two being Crystallization or Fluid (General intelligence) or the Three-Factor Model (analytical, creative, and practical intelligence) and 7- or 9-Factor Model by Gardiner (Naturalist, Musical, Logical-Mathematical, Existential, Interpersonal, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Linguistic, [Intra-Personal, Spatial]).
      How high you score in one category does not necessarily influence how (high or low) you score in another.

    like regarding or concerning food and eating in my culture we would ask who in the hell would leave out their child out on the dinner table? Way back in Haiti Papa did get the biggest plate but if mama forgot child # 15 because they were changing animals on the backside of the mountain, daddy's dumplings would surely missed one to give to that child.... but in the US if you weren't at the table at dinner time you missed dinner. According to some brothers and sisters at church. then I asked again... how many missing spoons until mental retardation---
    [in my OWN experience - even the best of us it can happens to: I starts not being able to spell words correctly after missing a few meals while living with another culture who didn't have the same eating habit as my family]
    Everything ELSE is For An Oprah Winfrey Show- with a heart condition! how many medical conditions are these children suffering from.... I lived with this woman and an adopted child in a too cold house during early spring while it still snows, because mama got a shot in the hospital that raised her body temperature to about 110 degrees in less than 3 minutes and now suffers from menopause... now lets be broad or etc. while mama is hot, child or children are cold and hungry, daddy roaming the streets other women's house or in jail..... no wonder the 14 year old after 7 years of torture they are qualify to be a mom as well after 14 years of age!!! God help and bless our souls in America.

    So how would you lable a grown man that gut laughs at 10 year old jokes, and carries on a conversation with himself, straying off the path with details that involve nothing about the point he's trying to get across. It's just annoying as hell!
