Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

.270 win has never let me down.
Make 270 WSM Great Again!
Lol. Wish the 270 weatherby and 270 winchester had faster twist. Winchester taking right steps
It’s called the 6.8 western
Feel the 270 bern!!!!!!!😂😂
I love mine
I got a browning in 270 WSM dropped a buck at 500 yards it's a good caliber but it is expensive Ware I live
The 270 wsm may not be the most popular round, but I love mine! It is and always will be my #1 hunting rifle here in the central interior of BC. I shoot a 140 grain Nosler Accubond @ 3150 fps and it groups 1/4 moa. Took a mule deer @ 308 meters last fall, through the heart. He took one step and keeled over. Found the perfectly mushroomed bullet under the hide on the far side, 65% weight retention. I've taken several animals with the rifle, nothing ever goes far after being hit. It is compact enough for brushy terrain, but equally at home in open country. It will always be my favorite rifle in my collection!
P.S. I'm a little bothered that the cartridge is being phased out because of one person who holds a "patent". C'mon dude, you're ruining it for the rest of us!
If a company profits from someone else’s patented design the designer absolutely deserves to be compensated otherwise it would turn into a free for all. After all if you and I both study for the same math test and I get an A and you get a C I’m not about to give you part of my grade so you can a B and all I get is a B.
100fps faster than my 6.5prc with 140s. I can ease up a little higher but ejector marks show up
Winchester is the one who screwed up! They tried to rip this guy off.
It's bs man I love mine but cannot find ammo it's 100 a box through a custom handloader out of Montana 150 grain partitions only way u can get ammo I have tried everything 😢
And yes the caliber is deadly out of 25 or so white tails I have killed with it which includes 3 around 200 pounds which is big for South Carolina I have had 2 run they usually drop instantly
I have a 270 wsm but I have a 270 win. And like you said 270 right there in the ball park and ammo easier to get. I love the 270 winchester. Thanks Ron
Thank you for telling the real story on the WSMs. It's a shame Winchester wouldn't work with the original designer to keep the WSMs. To me, it shows a complete lack of support and commitment to their customers by Winchester. Now what about all those people who bought rifles chambered in WSM cartridges? Obviously, Winchester didn't care about them.
Why would they? They made their money and they moved on.
Just an FYI, Ron.
Winchester still chambers both the Super Grade and the Featherweight in 270WSM as well as other WSM cartridges, like 300WSM, and 325 WSM cartridges. They all have 24 inch barrels and 1/10 Twist. A low point is finding brass for handloading, and IF you can find factory ammo for them you need to save the brass for reloading.
I love the WSM cartridges. But my preference is the 7WSM. I have hunted for 25+ years with 280 rem. Recently purchased a 7mm WSM Kimber Montana. I have been tinkering for about a year with loads for it. I'm getting the best success with 132 Hammer HHT. Best velocity/groups coming with Ramshot Magnum. However I don't like the temp sensitivity of that powder. H4350, H4831SC, and staball 6.5 is also giving decent results. I think I'm going to focus on the staball 6.5 this year. It meters well, good velocities, seem pretty temp stable and is reasonably priced.
My end goal is the trifecta of 7mm-08, 280 AI, 7mm WSM. With ultralight weight compact 7mm-08 which i haven't found yet. Thinking kimber adirondack if I can ever find one.
280AI in my old faithful Ruger m77 mk ii sporter.
Then building a long range hunting setup from my 7mm WSM. Struggling to find any prefit barrels or stocks/chassis for my kimber 8400 WSM action.
Ron i would love for you to discuss your loadings in the 7WSM if you have any experience with it.
I have a 270 Winchester, if I need larger I have a 30 06 or a 7mm rem mag. Ammo for all 3 are easier to find than the 270 WSM.
I bought mine because it was on the used rack, but never fired the original owner purchased it only to bring it back the next day for a 300 wsm . So I got the rifle for a used price with two boxes of Winchester failsafe ammo. It's a Browning A-bolt FLD no boss 23" barrel been handloading for it ever since. Love it!
What’s even crazier is the 7mm wsm is even better than the 270wsm, 6.8western and matches the 7mm prc. Why didn’t the 7mm wsm catch on is the real question it’s phenomenal. My opinion for hunting the 7mm wsm has been secretly the best hunting cartridge since it came out ballistically
For years I used a 270WSM and love it. Then a removed the barrel and added a 6.5 Bartlein barrel. Put a new stock and a new trigger. Using the same Remington action and the same 270WSM Brass I had. I necked down the Brass to a 6.5mm and now I have a 6.5WSM.
👍🏻 270 WSM!
There are still rifles chambered for the 270 wsm. Model 70s, XPR, AB3, Tikka are ones I’m aware of. I love my Tikka. It’s my go to for everything due to the trust I’ve built with it over the last 10 years. Elk, deer, pronghorn, it takes care of it all.
Good to hear. I am planning to get a 7-08 soon, and the Tikka T3 is on my very short list. I still want a 6.5x55, and the Tikka is available in that too.....
Very cool story, I just came here after a local gun shop had a really nice rifle chambered in .270wsm and I had never heard of it. Thanks for the info
Great cartidge, better than the 6.8 Western for hunting purposes in my opinion.
It is basically the exact same, the 6.8 is a new marketing idea for the 270 wsm
@@stephenkennedy3145They are very close, especially if built on long enough actions. The 6.8 Western has a more modern chamber design with a section of freebore. It resembles the "match chamber" for a WSM. The freebore aligns the bullet entering the rifling and tends to help make it easier to get an accurate load. It also allows the bullet to be loaded farther out of the case, reducing the amount of bullet in the case taking up powder space.
@jfess1911 yep basically Winchesters answer to the 6.5 and 7mm prc
No it’s not. I get that you are biased, but come on.
The 6.8 Western can do ANYTHING the 270 WSM can do, the WSM can’t do what 6.8 Western can. That’s a fact.
Unless you’re willing to modify your WSM, then as it sits, it’s limited. The 6.8 can fire 175 grain bullets off the shelf.
I’m not bagging the WSM, but that’s an ignorant comment.
I love all cartridges using the .277 projectiles. Claiming the WSM is better than the Western is your opinion, but have you actually compared the two? Or are you just going by your feelings?
I can say first hand, I can take shots with the Western that I’d never consider with the WSM.
I’ve taken two bulls at 574 and 588 yards in the last two years using the Western. Both one shot kills, and one dropped on the spot. The other ran maybe 25-30 yards. I used the 165 grain LR Accubonds for both. That’s the difference right there. The longer, higher BC, and heavier bullets allow for more energy delivered.
I love both, but the numbers don’t lie.
My two longest shots on game animals were made with a 7mm WSM. I’m a fan, one of the few.
I took my .270 WSM to BC for Coastal Black Bears. 140gr fail safe did the trick very nicely
I put a faster twist, carbon barrel on mine and it’s awesome. Basically it’s become a 6.8 Western. I hand load so the ammo makes life easy. Very versatile and comfortable to shoot.
You hand load?! Which plane of existence are you sourcing powder and primers from? Here in Australia, there are literally 10's of millions of primers on back order. Because of that I don't expect to be able to shoot anything other than factory ammo for the next 5 years. 😢😢
@@mattrickard3716 Basically out of pistol powder in Oz too... havent seen 2205 in years despite ADI saying they were going to give us an update in 2021.
2209 is at least still available for stuff like 243 308 and 300 win etc.
@@mattrickard3716 we can get things sparingly now. Primers are in stock here and there. The powders started freeing up a few months ago, but it’s not like you can just order what you want when you need it. I keep an eye out on the websites and pick up primers when they are available and the same with Powders. I don’t shoot as much as I would like, so if I were shooting all the time, I would likely be out of components all the time. I try to build up a bit of a stockpile so when I do get time to load and shoot, I can.
@@mattrickard3716 I’m in the US by the way.
I did the same thing. I put a carbon wrapped 8 twist from Prefered Barrel Blanks on mine. I'm having the biggest issue with brass. It sure is shooting good though. I'm shooting the Berger 170 gr EOL.
My late son had a Savage Model 11 chambered in 270WSM, it's now in my gun safe. After watching this I might just have to buy dies and reload some ammo for it. It's, for sure, bitter sweet but thanks for the video.
God bless.
I have a 270wsm,love it,found brass on internet,will be loading150gr interbond Hornady@@jdminn4
I have the same rifle. Accustock and accutrigger. I live that rifle. Accurate and lethal
Had a Win 70 270wsm black shadow... loved the cartridge... my rifle was a scope breaker 🤷 got no explanation for it... I want another one. Someday 🥰
I bought a new 270WSM modle 70 in 2021. Love it.
I hunted mule deer and blacktail deer with one but I never shot an elk with it. I’ve shot lots of elk with 7mm Rem Mag though and they are pretty similar in bullet weight and velocity.
Ron, I got lucky I didn't get a 270 wsm back when I was looking. Now I'm on to the 6.8 western! However I will tell you I hunt worth a 325 wsm and I've never had so many bang flops from any other cartridge! There's something to the wsm line! I wish 325 wsm had taken off more!
I had similar results with the 325 WSM.
The legal settlement makes sense. From the beginning of the WSM thing I had thought the 270 WSM would be the most popular (but I was wrong). The 300 duplicated the the 300 WM and the 7mm duplicated the 7mm Rem Mag. The only benefits to those were no belt, and a shorter cartridge length. Whereas the 270 WSM was a GOOD fit between the 270 Win and the 270 Weatherby. It is sad that the 270 WSM is dying. It is a worthy cartridge. If I did not get such good velocities from my 270 Win I would get one.
300 wsm will give you comparable velocities to a 300 wm in a shorter barrel and action. That’s my reason for going the wsm route.
Love the 270 WSM. It dropped in popularity due to some legal business as I recall. Nevertheless, it is a great caliber that I have taken quite a few hogs and whitetail with. Sister in law took her first elk with the caliber and since then has used it for 20 years to great affect. Not many manufacturers chamber for it now and I am looking to Tikka to reacquire a new rifle in the dandy caliber.
My deer boom stick is a .270 wsm Browning A-Bolt. I hand load 130 and 140 grain accubonds over H4350 and it’s never let me down. And I use a 300 wsm for moose and elk. I’m a big fan of them and too old to start again with something else 😂
I don't have a 270 of any kind. However I do roll my own. But it is one of those things that if you reload for plinking might be cheaper then buy factory. I have seen that some times it is cheaper to buy what you need and save your reloading for when you can't get anything.
The ammo is so hard to find.and when you do it's a crazy price. I also have the 300wsm. Great caliber. But it's expensive to shoot. But I love it
That’s how i feel about .257 Wby. I really want the caliber but rounds are 100 dollar plus for a box here.
i found 3 boxes at cabelas last winter so i bought them out. it should be enough brass to get me by for the next 15 years or so. i don't shoot much and i reload.
but if it was more popular, there’d be more, cheaper ammo
I can find 270 wsm but can't find the 300wsm because it is more popular
@@timbjork2098 Not before I got my three boxes from the same place. :) My local gun store has about 8-10 boxes but it's all that Deer Season Copper Impact Winchester
That's why I bought my 270wsm years ago , just to hunt in Alaska and I have loaded my ammo with 160gr nosler partitions.
.277 is redundant to the .284, except it doesn't have nearly as large of a bullet selection. The .257 and the 6.5mm have the same situation. I'm glad to see this being addressed.. I built a .257 Ackely Improved once and was disappointed that 120 was as heavy of a bullet as I could push out of a 1:10 twist.
Whilst I could care less about .277 cartridges. Berger has recently introduced the 133, and 135 grain .257.. I can't wait until my rifle is done. A one in seven twist.
I love the 270 wsm and 25-06 seems like we have similar taste ron. I have been running hammer bullets for a few years now it really shines in 270 wsm. 116 gr absolute hammer going 3700. I don't really have to worry about drops out to 500 yards. and the terminal performance is like nothing I have seen. Lung mater spread out yards past the deer. Nothing better for deer out here in SD in my opinion.
Long live the 270 wsm!
Very interesting. My son is interested in the 6.8 Western, and now the 7 mm PRC. I'll pass all this along to him, and let him know about you! Thanks so much!
Thanks George.
Both are very fun to shoot.
I'd love to see the 6.8 Western in the Browning BAR, that would be a great hunting rifle.
I just picked one up see how it fairs on game
It has always looked like a hugely capable round. Funny how in many ways a rifle plateform as good as this one never gets traction. Remington is well aquinted with designing phenominal cartridges like the 6mm Remington/.244 Remington and the 260 Rem was a sure bet. What happened to the 222 Rem? They killed it themselves with the 223! Thanks Rone
Unfortunately Remington has a long reputation of designing or legitimizing wildcats and just forgetting about them. I wouldn't expect them to change.
Fantastic ones too! That 260 should have been like the Creedmoor, but got disastrous marketing.
@@Jeff_Seely right, the Creed is everything the 260 is with less velocity, less case capacity and less case options.
How about Remington doing little with the 6.5 and 350 Mag, 280/7mm Express, 25-06, SUAM line, 8mm RM, the RUM's are getting forgotten, the 35 Whelen is all but gone, 222 and 222 Mag, they haven't loaded the 257 Roberts in years, and that's only a partial list. Their only bright spot is the 7-08 and they allowed that to languish for years, somehow it hangs on.
The wsm cartridges were before there time ...the 300 wsm and 270 wsm are great ..my personal favorite is my mod 70 stainless ultimate shadow in 270 wsm.
270 WSM round is in my opinion the best round there is. Hard to get ammo but there is nothing better. It’s a crime we don’t have more ammo available.
Eh Ron have you tried loading 165 gr ablr in
Any of the 1-10 twist .270 calibers? There's guys on u tube that have and the do stableize . I remember yrs ago my dad had 160 factory ammo for his 270 win , I've never seen factory above 150gr , and I haven't found a need for anything other than my 110 gr ttsx hand loads in my 270wsm at a lil over 3500fps that solid copper bullet is lights out and well under Moa on my rifle, but it would be interesting to see you try 165 gr ablr loads and the results you get!
I've been toying with the idea of building a short mag AR10 and .270WSM/6.8mm Western were the first candidates but after looking at the ballistics for probably far too long, I'm tempted to try to make a 7.21mm Tomahawk or 7.82mm Patriot work.
That sounds like a very cool project! I’m jealous. Best of luck!
@@whoshotashleybabbitt4924the BCG will probably be the main issue, the .580 bolt face isn't exactly common
@justahologram2230 the next main issue would be that 6.8 Western COAL wouldn't even fit the largest AR10 Mags. Edit: and the tomahawk
You can find a number of new factory manufactured rifles in 270 WSM on Gun Broker. Browning Speed, Winchester XPR, Tikka T3X and more.
I've heard that the short fat case of the 270 WSM reduces magazine capacity and doesn't feed as reliably without jamming as the long slender .270 Winchester..
I've never had a feeding problem with a WSM but the WSSM is a different story and yes they usually hold one less bullet usually 1 in camber 3 in mag but 4 should be plenty hunting
Own a 270wsm? Change barrel out to a 1:8 twist and shoot 170gr Berger EOL and viola! you have a faster 6.8 western!
I love my 270 wsm 26" barrel with 1in 8 twist. I had a reamer made with Berger 170 eol with RL 26 3190 fps
That is a hard hitting combo.
I bought my first rifle in 50 years, almost went with 6.8W
but had a good deal with x-bolt in 270 win. It is plenty for everything in this territory.
At 1500 yards it's still burning at 1719 fps with 1116 ft lbs of energy........The true 7mm
I love my 270 wsm Tikka I have been handloading for years. The problem I have is the unavailability of brass. Where can you buy it?
So bullet fragmenting vs controlled expansion what is better or is based on rifle vs game being hunted
I want to 7mm WSM, I like it. I’ve always wondered why they didn’t make a 264 WSM.. I have a couple of 264 Magnums that can deliver. May be an off-the-wall question but I just always wanted one. That was it. 264WSM
6.5 PRC
It seems rational to not favour overbore cartridges.
The 6.8W and 270 fast twist are more balanced.
It’s a stout little round, I’ve got one with a 27” Shilon ,she’s a hammer
My Winchester model 70 in 270 WSM is a great shooter. Yes the ammo is a little expensive but it's a great round.
I have a 270wsm and have never had a problem getting ammo for it even premium ammo
Great round but I'm a Florida bush hunter for that u need bullet weight like 45/70
I have a browning xbolt in 270wsm and it doesn’t like any of the Winchester ammo it likes the 130 all copper but it kicks like a mule and very hard to find ammo for
How do you like yours? I just got one too
I would of like to gotten my hands on a 25 wsm an a 243 wsm
Do they exist?
@@MalachiWhite-tw7hl sometimes one will pop up on gunbroker
Ron are there and cartridges between .270 and .284? I’ve had 700adl 7mag dad got me in 99 and just got 6.5prc waypoint and been loadin 130/40tipped gamechangers,Berger vld’s and eldm with velocities at 3050-140s and 3250-130s 24” carbon bsf barrel…triggertech..these new short mags kinda got my attention…thanks buddy matt
Do you mean calibers between 27 and 28? No. If you mean cartridges, there are many with ballistic performance close to or between the 270 Win. and 284 Win.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors I wondered if there was a .275 but you got me lined out now. 🫡
@@charlesmullins3238 Oh, you're thinking of the 275 Rigby, the British name for the 7x57mm Mauser. Exact same cartridge shooting .284" diameter bullets.
Is that why the 7 wsm not popular anymore? I’ve got one I bought right after they came out . Now I can’t find ammo and when u do it’s expensive.
This does not make a lot of sense, since the 300 WSM is a fairly common cartridge. I think that the main reason that the 270 WSM, 7mm WSM and 7mm RSAUM did not take off was that all three were close in performance without one standing out.
You can read what actually happened with the legal part by reading "Jamison v. Olin Corporation-Winchester Division". Jamison had applied for patents for the cartridges and worked with Ruger and Winchester to develop the "JRW" (Jamison, Ruger, Winchester) line. Ruger had agreed to the licensing fee. This was Winchester's response: "Winchester's firm position will be to offer no royalty payments and further request an exclusive license to manufacture and sell any of the JRW cartridges, independent of the caliber under your patent if it issues."
Winchester also wrote Jamison and stated: they would ""terminate [the] development of the JRW Cartridges" unless plaintiff signed such an agreement by November 6, 1998. " When Jamison did not agree, Winchester went ahead and introduced the cartridges as Winchester Short Magnums.
Winchester even had a 300 JRW introduction and hunt for sports writers in Texas on Feb 22, 1999 because they assumed Jamison would cave. He did not.
7wsm 162 eldx 3200fps
Moose, Caribou, Deer, are one thing, but Elk just seem to be a little more tenacious of life. If you hit the other critters in the boiler room with any adequate round, they'll go down, but Elk, for some reason, require a little more juice.
I have shot 3 Elk with the 270 WSM. All 3 wobbled and dropped.
bullet selection?
Is the patent expired by now? It should be…time to bring it back!
They need to get that 6.8 Western into more rifles they still have not put it in the Browning lever
My only complaint for my 270 wsm is sometimes finding the ammo
Almost better to buy the cheapest ammo, if u can find it, and then use the brass to reload. The cost of unprimed 270WSM brass is like 2-3 boxes of cheap factory ammo.
I thought his Paton ran out on the 270 WSM? Did you hear that it did?
My limited knowledge of patents indicates they are good for 20 years, so Jamison's should have expired. But I've also heard there are some legal ways to extend patents to some degree.
Hey Ron, beautiful silhouette there behind you. One of yours?
Oh, yes. Mule deer in the Black Hills of WY near Devil's Tower. Thank you.
I love my custom 1-8 twist 270 Weatherby. 150gr accubond long range it’s bad medicine
I have a 270WSM and use 140gr and have yet to see it not go through anything.
Do you think the 300wsm would eventually become obsolete or is it still a popular cartridge.
The patent has expired, they are only good for 20 years. The 270 wsm was introduced in 2002. Manufacturers get with the program
Handloading / load development is only second to that moment you or a companion draws a bead and fires. Its easy to get started and huge amounts of info and people eager to put in 2 cents, or 2 pounds or 2 tons.
I hate a howa 270 wsm and love it but can never find ammo for it
True. I just looked on gun broker and there are only 3 high priced offerings.
While there are hundreds for 270win
🤠 It is just too bad that Winchester got "greedy" to begin with! 😬 It was a "dishonest" business move and I hope that Winchester has learned their lesson, so they don't meet the same fate as Remington did (by trying to make a few extra dollars, by being dishonest - as Remington did with the redesign of the firing mechanism of their rifles to save $5/gun, that ended up killing people and their company)? 😱 The 270 wsm, as far as I am concerned, is one of the "All Time Great Cartridges" and I will be sad to see it go away! 😭 However, their is Absolutely Nothing To Complain About with the Performance of the 270 Winchester and I still prefer it's design to the short/fat cases for feeding and hunting! 🤑 Winchester needs to stay focused on that "Flagship Cartridge" and they will always continue to make money from that Great 270 Winchester Design! 😎
I can’t find ammo, anybody know where to get it?
Ron, or anybody else that can help me clear this situation up. Did the fellow who filed the lawsuit against Winchester, file it strictly just for the 270 WSM or did he try to claim he came up with the idea for the WSM case in general?
It was the WSM case in general
You can read what happened in the "Jamison v. Olin Corporation-Winchester Division" court decision. The cartridges were initially called the "JDW" (Jamison, Ruger, Winchester) family. Jamison had developed and applied for a patent the cartridges and had been dealing with the legal teams of Ruger and Winchester for royalties. Ruger had already signed the the agreement, but after several years of development with Jamison, Winchester decided to reneg on their previous agreement. Winchester did not dispute the facts, they just thought they could get away with it.
Talk about 340 Weatherby........
I feel like Winchester dumped us Hornaday is doing the same thing I got the 325wsm and the 270wsm and a 300rcm Hornaday can't buy ammo for so thank you Winchester and Hornaday merrychristmas
They say that the .270WSM is "only" 200-250fps faster than a .270 Win. Well, from what I have seen, most AI calibers are only a couple hundred feet per second faster than the original caliber. So this is basically the same difference as a .270 AI. Right?
I think it's pretty powerful I mean people used it on moose and elk. The gun had even been used on bison.
I'd love to buy a 270WSM rifle right now, but, that ammo........ the prices........good lord........ What the heck ? When you can find it, it can be anywhere from $3.00 to $6.00 a cartridge. And that does not include Shipping. RIP 270WSM. (Yeah, my local gun shops laugh when I ask about that caliber availability).
I got a Savage. 270 wsm. Weird looking cartridges. The ammo is so expensive so i only shoot it 1- 2xs a year
The .270 WSM is better than the 6.8 ballistically is it not? I think it hits almost as hard as a 300 mag at 600 yards with less drop, less drift. Maybe hits even harder at that distance.
It’s not. If you’re firing a 150 grain out of both, then yes. The extra powder will give it more energy. Once you get past the 150 grain bullets, that’s where the Western shines. It can fire ammo clear up to the 175 grain projectiles, the WSM cannot unless you modify your rifle and reload. Off the shelf, the Western can do anything the WSM can, but the WSM can’t do what the Western can.
I love both, but these are just the facts.
I don't have a wsm. My neighbor has one.
It doesn't cycle as well as the wcf and brass doesn't stand up like the .270 wcf.
I can achieve 3000 fps on the 150's from the wcf and a 22" barrel. I doubt the wsm will get much more with a 22" tube. My opinion, folks
According to Nosler, 24 inch barrels, approximately 275 fps in favor of the short mag....not even close.
For whatever reason, the whole 270 bore has never appealed to me. And yes, i have read some vintage Jack O'Connor, Warren Page, et al. Maybe in ny formative years i subconsciously latched on to 30-06. I don't need those power levels anyway. I am sure it is a technically well done cartridge, but I don't "need" it. Interesting patent story. I expect the royalties would be on the ammo more than the guns. Did he patent the chamber drawing too? I don't think manufacturers pay each other royalties for their chamberings. May evthey have a gentleman's agreement? Or they do pay and nobody talks about it. Several years ago i reimagined the 280 British intermediate cartridge in a shorter case with modern powders. I out up a couple of posts with the idea on Forgotten Weapons and places. Maybe i better go patent it. Lol. Nah, too much work. I would have to have full technical drawings and whatnot. And we have too many 7mm cartridges already. It was a fun mental exercise though
Im about to build a 7mmWSM. Better than the 7mm PRC
The 6.8 Western is dead in the water. Winchester and Browning really dropped the ball on the release.
Tikka makes it for there rifles!
The 6.8 didn’t catch much wind….it was hot for a minute and now nothing
Es una pena que no lo traduzcan a la lengua más hablada del mundo Castellano o Español
I have lost two deer with the 270 WSM both shot with in 15 yards while hunting in Pennsylvania. I switched to the 7mm-08 and no longer lose game.
Last year I took a buck at 218 yards with my 7mm-08 and it dropped without moving an inch. I love the 7mm-08, mainly because I have spinal cord damage and can't handle too much recoil. In my opinion it's a great cartridge especially here in PA. Good luck this upcoming hunting season Paul.
Magnum rounds have some issues at closer range because they are moving so fast that they dump less energy inside certain ranges such as less than 25 yards. But at 400 yards the 270 WSM is better than a 7mm-08. So depends on where you hunt and the ranges you have to shoot. Love the 7mm-08 though, great cartridge.
@@stevenmontoya7275 what? Going too fast and "dumping" less energy? That is ridiculous.
@@jk-kr8jt If you are going fast enough you just shoot right through, super high penetration so more energy escapes, a slower bullet that mushrooms will deposit more energy than one the just shoots right through like nothing.
@@stevenmontoya7275 are you discussing "solid" that are designed to not expand to expanding bullets? Otherwise you are recreating an old argument that has been proven wrong time and time again.
I had one years ago just was not impressed with the cartridge . That being said it worked well in hogs just most deer I show ran about a hundred yards before they died with it
Must of been close to when if first come out was you using winchester Silver tips
@@jmgates09 yes I was actually, I traded it in at the local gun shop for normal 270
Just load down your 300 WSM to over power a 270 wsm. Trapper scotty,Alaskan
I made the mistake of getting a 300 WSM because it was the latest craze. Worse shooting gun I have ever had!
Just purchase A 6.8 Western! A much better cartridge.
The 6.8 western is a good cartridge holds less powder than the 270 WSM. the barrel twist of the 6.8 is a faster twist and will stabilize a heaver bullet. that said if you install the same twist rate barrel on a 270 WSM it will have a slight advantage.
The problem with all the .270 cartridges is lack of popularity,...even if you reload bullet selection is far lower then any other calibers. So manufacturers won't be making as many, basic supply and demand, with the 6.8 western that is the only cartridge that can take advantage of the heavy for caliber high bc bullet.
The reason all the .270 magnums kept the same twist rate was to use the same bullets of the most popular round the .270 winchester
@@rickescover1862I have both a 6.8 Western and 270WSM with 7 1/2 twist. The 6.8 Western is about 15% more efficient using less powder than the 270 WSM. Others have found the same.
Don't count on finding any brass to handload it. Save your factory brass.
Way to much overlap, hype, marketing, and failures these days and I own several of the failures. Let's be frank and honest here. Get an 270win, 308win, 30-06 and just worry about other things like excellent footwear, clothing, optics, fuel/transportation, and how to spend more time afield.
and for optimum sanity, probably only need one of those 3
..... but they are so much fun.
Because the WSM calibers were a solution in search of a problem. A marketing ploy.
Short and fat is where it’s at!!!!!!
Hope you are not refering to women.
At least the new crop of cartridges offer the ability to handle very high BC bullets. The WSM line offered nothing over already existing rounds. They were little more than a failed sales gimmick.
300wsm seems to be doing pretty good
@@jmgates09 Not in my rifle collection. ;)
🗣it’s NOT more popular because GUN WRITERS ✍️
don’t push it down our throat like the 6.5mm CM.
At the Bass Pro Shop the other day looking at ammo:
40% of the ammo was 6.5CM. Followed by .223 (30%) ammo and then .270, .308 and .30/06 …. 🤔🤠
Good luck finding any loaded WSM ammo of any caliber and finding brass is the same problem with only Burtram brass is the only company now offering 300 WSM & 325 WSM for 100 cases @ $200.
If anyone knows any company selling any of the WSM brass, I would like to know.
I build to sell AR 10 uppers in all WSM cartridges and in wildcats like 6.5 WSM / 358 WSM / 375 WSM but finding the WSM brass has been near impossible and put a stop to the sales of my WSM AR 10 uppers.
I have half a ton of scrap plumbing brass Id rather make something with, than send it to the yard.
Maybe I should look into a casing cottage industry.
The .270 WSM is better than the 6.8 ballistically is it not? I think it hits almost as hard as a 300 mag at 600 yards with less drop, less drift. Maybe hits even harder at that distance.
