This video details how to navigate through the Ozark National Forest when off-roading or overlanding and what to look for when you come across a broken section of trail on the map. This video walks through how to use GAIA GPS with the MVUM Overlay, the Forest Service MVU Maps, and the Interactive Visitor Map to see what's really going on when you find broken sections of trail.

Once again, great info! As I am planning a trip in the Mark Twain National Forest in MO, the tip on the Interactive Map is much appreciated. I wish they would publish .GPX files. A question.... I come from the Adventure Motorcycle world of exploring and use Garmin BaseCamp and a Garmin Montana GPS for route planning. In the GPS world there is a big difference between a Route and a Track. Tracks are like dropped breadcrumbs and it's up to you to follow them, and a Route will try to redirect you if you venture off of the Route, not necessarily taking you where you want to go. In BaseCamp I always build my route as a 'Route', as I can drop down waypoints and it will snap to a road or trail, but then I always convert it to a I'm new to Gaia and I'm not sure what the difference between a Route and a Track is in the Gaia world is, or if there is a difference.
have you thought about mapping a trip, coordinates wise? i ask because my family, and another, are coming in the spring from alabama. i have gaia along with avenza maps. Obviously, i don't know the best trails to take.

@@otis-xk6ib dang!! That was 2 years ago. Well now you can run the Ozark Overland Adventure Trail and a full route to follow and campsites marked. I hope you can find time this year.

I have the premium Gaia but i don't have the color trails on MVUM (USFS) Red & Blue ???
That's one of the reason I did my latest Gaia video a couple months ago. The MVUM changed and is no longer color coded.

@@derrickkirby4841 the Forest Service made the change so the MVUM over matches the actual MVU Maps. I liked the colors but this makes more sense and works better when comparing the two.

Matt, when I put the mvu overlay on Gaia I see very little color a couple reds and only a couple green. Am I missing a setting?
Yeah that video is outdated. They updated the MVUM overlay to match the actual MVUM maps. Check out my Gaia Basics video for an updated walk through of that.
Really good information!! To help with property lines Hunt X app mapping is a really good source for public land vs ownership and gives information about ownership with contact information.

Why does Interactive Map turn blue?
That happens to me sometimes as well when I'm moving the map around and don't click my mouse before I start moving and it selects everything instead of moving the map.
If you download AcreValue you can find out who owns that Cabin!
Gaia will tell you that too on the private lands overlay.
Oh ok cool. Awesome videos too. I'm in Louisiana and hope to one day get up there and check out the Ozark area. Nice Drone work too, I'm a Part 107 operator in New Orleans. You have much better scenery up there lol.
You've just shown why I don't overland the Ozarks. You can't navigate off one map. You need three. And still may not have correct info. Several of my friends got ticketed on a closed trail that wasn't marked closed on their map.
You're not wrong. It's not easy. But once you learn your way around it's very rewarding. Of course, I live in Arkansas so I can see why it would be not worth it to someone coming out of state. If you want to go, give me a shout and I'll be happy to lead a group.
