I was passing by a on my way to chemistry class and was early because I take the buss and a professor for the physical therapy program saw me and excitedly brought me before her class. They had a project where students were to spend 24hours in a wheelchair and write about the experience. I ended up showing them transfers from different places and explaining I can move my legs and how not everyone who’s in a wheelchair is fully paralyzed etc. and about my day to day challenges... what I do with hills, if there is no off or on ramp to sidewalk curves what public transit is like from a chair. I was there for about 1/2 an hour Before I went to class. (Bus came once an hour so I was either 40 mins early or 40 mins late) The prof explained her intentions and politely asked if I was willing to help I said yes because I’m passionate about awareness like gen is!!
When I first got my wheelchair my husband sat in it and went out the front yard to the car. He fell over backwards trying to push on the grass and it made him much more understanding as to why I need help being pushed. I think without trying to get about on wheelchair people are just oblivious to the struggles. Thanks for showing people that!
Once I needed my wheelchair on a regular bases I asked my husband to reorganize our house and to help him and our daughters understand why it was necessary I asked them all 3 to try navigating the house in a spare wheelchair we have(it was a family members). They all three crashed into the walls and door frames and had a heck of a time getting in and out of the bathrooms. But each of them were good sports to give it a try.
Veda, I had to get help changing my flat, to make more space, when I needed a wheelchair. Sadly, that meant I had no space for my hobby; but I donated a lot which hopefully made others happy. I now have a new hobby.
My husband wouldn't even try any of that. Kudos to your husband. I'm nervous and excited because tomorrow I go from a manual wheelchair to an electric one I'll still keep the manual as backup . Hope my driving will be up to scratch lol
I had to get a manual wheelchair last December. Increasing problems with my hands/arms means someone is coming to assess my electric wheelchair needs today ( after my IVIG). Bon courage ! You're not alone.
Loved the video. I hope he is ok from tipping backwards. I wish I could have my whole family do this. Several of them constantly comment to me well you have wheels can’t be to hard!! Watching your husband talk about the sidewalks and how they slant and are uneven that is something I have been trying to explain to my parents for the longest time but they just don’t get it!
Same here. Also, my legs do “work” in a sense that I have feeling and can stand for a TINY amount of time. Yet my family doesn’t understand that I can’t just “get up and walk” with my wheelchair when crossing the road, going up a curb, etc.
Good on you Shauno! I wish people would actually spend a day strapped into a wheelchair as I hope it would give them some appreciation of how knackering getting around in a wheelchair really is. So much kudos to you Shauno! You’re a legend 🤗🤗 I hope he didn’t end up too battered and bruised 🤗🤗 Had the biggest giggle when he tried to hoover in the wheelchair, it’s a full on workout to do 🥵 PS Shauno you should definitely try changing the bedding whilst balancing on one leg (amputee style🥵🤕) Fantastic post Gem 🤗🥰🤗 hope you all enjoy a kofi 😉🥰
I am glad at least he tried the challenge. I have suggest this to my family members a few might do it but when they try they will try for a few mins and when it gets frustrating really quick to them. They will get out of the wheelchair and say. "Wow, i don't see how you do that." And then after that its conversation over lol Some people just don't realize how hard it is to do somethings while your in a wheelchair etc
Gen this was a great blog. I’m sorry Shawn you had me cracking up so bad. I give it to you you did a great job way to go. I’m a fairly new spinal cord injury it was a year on the 15 of this month. I’m a C1-3 complete injury. Gen I love your vlogs thanks so much for doing them.
Waking this morning about to make my green tea! Love you guys!! When he fell over I was like oh oh oh no there he goes lol! I think he should do a dance class in a wheelchair and adapt the movement lol
I think the next challenge for shaun should be to pull up a metre or so of the paving at the front door, spread an inch or two of sand under it and re-lay it to eliminate the low (2"?) step into the porch. Maybe I'm just a 'surely there must be an easier way' kind of guy, but that seems like an easy fix to an unnecessary obstacle.
My mum did something similar to this once and I remember we were driving and I said “this hill is going to be difficult in the wheelchair” and she was like “it’s not a hill” and in my head I thinking ‘oh you’ll see’. The whole experience was very funny😂 Love this video!
Lol I forget just how agile I am in my wheelchair until someone wants to try the chair and tries to do things that are second nature to me but rocket science to someone who isn’t in a chair. Lol
They just don't know until they know, unfortunately. My bf and kids are absolutely clueless nor do they try to even understand. I'm so happy you have a husband willing to do this!! It's so refreshing!
This was so funny, I have now watched it three or four times. Sean, you do a great deal. As much as I would love to be a neighbor of yours, I think it would probably not end well. I laughed so hard. I think my neighbors were wondering if I was having a party in here.
I always get antitippers added to my wheelchairs to avoid tipping backwards. I tried a sport chair once and fell backwards got quite the bump on my head and broke my collarbone. Sport chair didn’t have anti tipping wheels.
Well done Shaun. Now Gem, I always thought of you as a kind hearted helpful sort of person. However, I can't help feeling that you take a bit of sadistic pleasure when Shaun is struggling in the chair!
I think Shaun's next challenge should be to try and improve your front door access? I know you have some sort of mini ramp but the fact Shaun fell on exiting shows it can be improved?
I noticed he struggled with the door. I ended up buying resistance bands and tying them to the door handles on they major doors I use everyday. . Just grab them and pull doors shut. Doesnt look very appealing, but its a great time saver.
I get my custom wheelchair on November 30th! I'm so excited. It's really going to give me my freedom back. I have a heart condition as well as EDS so walking and standing for long periods of time is very difficult. Can't wait!
I hoover my room, as I have to, but it wouldn’t be practical for the whole house. Ours is a typical hoover, with a coward and the handle separate to the part that collects the rubbish. We do also have a small cordless handheld hoover which I use for my room too, although it’s tiny so wouldn’t be able to hoover everywhere !
I wonder if putting a metal handle vertically on the door near the hinge side would help with the struggle of closing the doors. I saw another TH-camr do that on their outside doors.
A brilliant video, I think he did very well, duvets are bad enough when you're able bodied.I've quite recently started using a manual wheelchair and I knew it would be hard but it's even worse than I thought, REALLY HARD!!! I hate trying to get up steep dropped kerbs and off camber pavements,(which most of them are) is so hard, not to mention HILLS,lol.Keep.up the great work.
@@Wheelsnoheels Thank you, I have been following for a good few months now and your films are really a tremendous help, and very entertaining too, thank you for being there for us all, you really are inspirational.
Such a good idea! My daughter has a lot of assistive equipment because of her condition. I wonder what my other kids would think if they used some of it 😂
Loved the vid as ever guys! Poor Shaun, I really did feel for him - those pavement cambers are a real bind! I've moved to a little robot vacuum now, and it's an absolute blessing - cost £100, and works a treat!
Hi Tim! Yes I saw your robot vacuum, very cool. We filmed some of this before I had the batec, otherwise I would have followed him accross the grass! 😂😂 bloody god send is the bike!!!
I'm a wheelchair user to i have spins biffida i think a lot more proplr should do this challenge spend a day doing what you usually do only in a wheelchair to many people think thst been in a wheelchair is an easy life.
When you got to the vacuum it reminded me of tools. Especially since it's a husband challenge. Now my father wasn't disabled but by the time he hit age 90 he had converted most of his power tools to light weight electric Makita battery powered ones. I highly recommend them for those who have a hard time with upper body strength you can get more work done before tiring out. A lot of the newer vacuums have gotten lighter weight too. Maybe a handy man challenge for another video?
I have a dyson dc26 which is lightweight and not as rigid as most vacuum cleaners. I dont use the long pole and just attach the head to the handle so its short enough that i dont need to reach up to get to the handle. Having said that theres a lot of cleaning i cant do (high shelves mostly) so i just employ a cleaner. But i can vacuum if needed.
I would challenge them to enjoy the church service in a wheelchair and possibly go grocery shopping in one. I mostly use my cane, but with the church building being large, I use a wheelchair to keep my pain level down and my heart rate down to a stable beat and my energy level up.
my bin men just do the bin for me as its 2 m from the road lol. that field trip he took was a big ask for a noobie so he did well. i only just got a cordless beginning of this year and i should of done it when they first came out but didnt as im tight
I confess I don't use a chair indoors and I still don't do the hoovering. Well I can when I'm really confident and it's early but I could count on one hand how many times I've done it in years.
BINDI!!!!!!!😍😍 She is a beautifull girl😍😍 im a boxerlover😁 i have a white boxergirl named Pip. I do hoover from my wheelchair and yes i use a cordsell one(i would die dealing with a cord) i live by myself and i do most things myself. There are some things i used dont get the hang of like how do i clean my windows or making my bed😓Lucky me i have a cleaninglady that comes ones a week to help with the things i struggle with. And i can always call my parents and brother.
This was great. Don't your council do the thing called assisted bin lift where if you phone and tell them you're not able to take your bin out, the bin men come and do it for you every week? xx
Very late reply, but generally assisted bin collections (and other services for those with disabilities) are only usually offered if there is no able bodied person available to do it for you. Some councils will specify that you must live alone, but others will expect you to ask a neighbour, carer, friend or family member for help rather than offer a service themselves. My bin men absolutely love leaving the bins in the middle of the garden instead of where they found them like they're supposed to, won't empty them at all if they're half full, and never close the gate behind them, so it's not exactly ideal even when you do get help from them.
Hi Gem. Another great video. I actually feel like I’m watching a comedy sitcom. This would make great TV. Shaun is such a good sport. Your daughter is adorable. Her laugh is contagious. Have a wonderful day. 🎃💀👻
Was he sore for a while after doing all this? That fall back that he took kind of triggered me. 😱 lol. I can’t believe he did all that without bike gloves. I think my hands have gotten more sensitive as I’ve aged, It really messes up my hands if I don’t use bike gloves.
Aw good I'm glad he's ok, I feel down a whole flight if stairs about 8 years ago and it was the 1st step where I cracked my lower back bum area that hurt the most I thought I was going to throw up 🤦♀️
I Hoover (vacuum) our house every week (we have 4 dogs). I use a Shop Vac for the hard floors and a Shark Navigator Deluxe upright vacuum on the carpet in the living room. It’s a lot easier now than when I first started doing it as you have to figure out what works and doesn’t work for your abilities. I don’t even attempt changing the bed sheets. Of the challenges Shaun did I would find going across the grass field the most challenging. I have tendinosis and impingements in both shoulders, so I use a SmartDrive. But, the SmartDrive doesn’t work in the grass.
I cant physically push myself on grass because of the cerebral palsy I have I have slight arm weakness and my left side is slightly weaker then my right but its only noticeable in certain activities I do or when I'm having a bad day. but there is no way I can push myself on grass or even when the pavement has a slight ramp slight to it, I prefer to push myself road as well. However, when I push myself on the road I'm scared in case I get knocked over by a car.
My electric wheelchair tyres pulled up and ruined the carpets so all except one room now is vinyl flooring, and that one room will soon be done. I have a Shark cordless vacuum which broke after 7 months, so after I have had the last carpet changed will be buying a new cordless vacuum. I could not manage a corded hoover because I would get tangled in the cords.
I love vacuuming in a wheelchair, the trick is cordless, but most cordless vacuums aren't good. You have to shell out for the Dyson! My husband won't get in my chair!
Shaun is now battle fatigue and poor Shaun gets the Purple Heart for the many injuries taking during battle! Shaun is a hero to someone who could that be let me think!
The hoovering one might actually be posible if you sit on a normal chair or so while you watch them fail. Just make sure you don't laugh too laudly untill you have your chair back..
I love these challenge videos there great to watch I've been wanting my boyfriend to try things to see how it's like doing things with my disabilities, but I don't know where to start with him though because you see it's taller and heavier then me,so he can't fit any of the devices that I've gotta use though to help me get around safely since not only do I've got cerebral palsy, but I'm legally blind too,so with that said I use a coupleto a few different things at the same time for mobility.
Just incase its not obvious Sean being a physically fit person normally means he could do things like hovering. A wheelchair user may not be able to do it or if they do then that is all of the energy they have gone. Its fantastic that he's giving it ago and finding cool work arounds but it dose not mean that x person who is disabled could do it if they just had willpower because Sean can.
I reckon everyone should have to navigate school for a week in a wheelchair. A proper “walk” a mile…wheel a mile? A friend of mine at school was in a wheelchair but i was a naive kid and never thought about things like transfers and stuff. Sometimes though she’d get out and we’d do wheelies. She was super strong from pushing and I’d get tired in like 3 minutes. One could make an attachment to slot onto the top of the bin and then a curved bit to sit around the waist to keep it square when pushing. I think robot vacuums would be super useful. Tech in general would be useful too wouldn’t it?
What challenges would you like to see shaun do next?

I get Henry hoover and mackle the end to the footplate and he follows me round
Nailed the bins xx
Was he sore for a while after doing all this? That fall back that he took kind of triggered me. 😱 lol. I can’t believe he did all that without bike gloves. I think my hands have gotten more sensitive as I’ve aged, It really messes up my hands if I don’t use bike gloves.
Shaun is very fit and strong. And determined. I think His hands were fine. But it was tired!!
Can you please do some more like this
Proper cringed for Sean when he fell on his back I had sympathy pain in my back lol
I know!! When I was editing it, I cringed every time
He was fine btw 😉🙏🏼
Aw good I'm glad he's ok, I feel down a whole flight if stairs about 8 years ago and it was the 1st step where I cracked my lower back bum area that hurt the most I thought I was going to throw up 🤦♀️
@@JustWheelMe OMG that does sound painful!! 💗😬
Just Wondering!...Why done't DB, Do Wheelchair Challenges?
Best person for fighting ablism. 💕
Where are the tip guards for his wheelchair?
GOD I relate to trying to use a Dyson vacuum - and a vacuum in general - so painfully. It's a bitch.
I need to get my family to try living in my chair 😂
Wow, so funny 🤣🤣🤣
Hopefully no lasting injuries
Yeah just watching Shaun made me ache. I’m lucky I have my batec now, other wise I would have filmed him on the grass
That bin system would NOT work for me and my OCD. Omg.
Channel needs more 'Bindi cam'
My electric wheelchair tyres pulled up and ruined the carpets so all except one room now is vinyl flooring, and that one room will soon be done. I have a Shark cordless vacuum which broke after 7 months, so after I have had the last carpet changed will be buying a new cordless vacuum. I could not manage a corded hoover because I would get tangled in the cords.
How empty was that bin.... I mean really full. Lol
I look forward to the day I get a second chair and make everyone around me do this 😈
The hoovering one might actually be posible if you sit on a normal chair or so while you watch them fail. Just make sure you don't laugh too laudly untill you have your chair back..
My wife left me and took my chair once... of course I went crawling back... haha just kidding she maybe wouldn't do that lol
What really would be cruel is to let him use a standard passive wheelchair instead of the active one...
(evil laugh) heheheh
Just incase its not obvious Sean being a physically fit person normally means he could do things like hovering.
A wheelchair user may not be able to do it or if they do then that is all of the energy they have gone.
Its fantastic that he's giving it ago and finding cool work arounds but it dose not mean that x person who is disabled could do it if they just had willpower because Sean can.
Hi. I'm SUPER nervous. I'm going to the doctor and if they say I need a wheelchair it definitely will be a big help but also kinda nerve-racking.
Yes, try to only use when it really need.
Poor Shaun. lol
Did Sean borrowed this wheelchair?
It’s my other wheelchair. 😊 it’s my rigid one which I attach to my Batec now
Evevs moring rotetn
Which city is this
I reckon everyone should have to navigate school for a week in a wheelchair.
Tech in general would be useful too wouldn’t it?
wait so if gen has never done the bins or hooveriing isnt it only fair she give sit a go instead of just picking on shaun?
She may not be physically capable of doing those
@@alexschwartz7967 fair point im just saying she should at least try
well its not his permanent situation, so picking on him is not too serious and probably wouldnt hurt him deeply
😂😂🤣🤣
