  • Elon Musk has JUST revealed Tesla's Next Generation Motor which has shocked the entire automotive industry. Tesla's motors are some of the most advanced and efficient in the market, with a focus on energy, efficiency, and sustainability. Their new powertrain engine is said to undercut competitors with a much cheaper design that will be 2 to 3 times less in cost. Tesla's next generation Permanent Magnet motors have completely ELIMINATED Rare Earth Metals and will reduce silicon carbide in the microchips. This is game-changing as these materials are expensive and are sourced from areas that could have environmental and social impact. Tesla's new electric motor design also uses hairpin stators which will better power the rotors, improving efficiency, heat dissipation, and power output. Elon Musk's insane drive unit is finally here and will mean GAME OVER for companies like Toyota, General Motors, and Volkswagen. #tesla #ElonMusk #electricmotors

Rare earth metals should really be called 'expensive to isolate and purify' metals. They are not rare as such - in fact they are quite abundant. It's just that they are not well concentrated in traditionally minable areas of high concentration. Also, the individual elements are often all mixed together and the extraction process is expensive.
Nevertheless, if tesla has made a 'permanent magnet' out of some other material then this will make a big difference not just in the automotive industry. I wonder what it is?

I love the sidenote "the hairpin motor concept is already used by other car manufacturers". But of course, now that ELON adopts it, it is HIS PERSONAL invention, it is HIS PERSONAL innovation that will revolutionize human existence.
Like his rocket engines are pretty straightforward standard engines, nothing really fancy, or like his Boring Company that would revolutionize the drilling of tunnels 10 times at fast for 10% of the cost ended up buying standard boring equipment and drills tunnels just as slow and just as expensive as any other drilling company.

The problem with ANY permanent magnet, rare or not, is the fact that it is not permanent. They all loose magnetism, as is the nature of magnets. The more you use it, the more it looses. The more it heat-up, the more it looses. To get it back, normally requires a super-high blast of EM-fields. Which is how they are created in the first place.
Rare-earth magnets tend to have more power, but are also more sensitive to heat. So, going to normal magnets, will instantly offer longer life power, at the cost of slight weight increase. Adding some kind of back-EMF pulse, can provide some additional power-gains, after losses. (Like a temporary power-restoration to the magnets.) The cost is, obviously, power to do that. Every component is there to do it, within the motor itself.
Ultimately, he is working towards getting these things into the mid-level consumer market, so that ALL prices can be reduced and even more parts can become "universal", or "swappable". You don't get good availability by making only specialized parts for specialized people. You make them for "the masses", and offer "upgraded parts" to the high-rollers. This places more shops in more locations, and more ways and people to fix them, everywhere.

The "back of the napkin" model on cost is exactly that. It is not precise. I spent 25 years working for a major Japanese automotive manufacturer and the math is actually pretty close, BUT it is only based on observation of vehicles' cost, and not necessarily due to any engineering or manufacturing cost targets. ICE's cost what they cost, and each engine is used in many different models at many different price points. If Musk can get a Model 3 delivered for under $30k, then consumers will move his direction in droves. He knows this, and is what is driving innovation targets. Currently, however, as is well known, Tesla is a "luxury" vehicle and is limited in its consumer acceptance. So, his value proposition is a serious one. Can you imagine a Model X at the same price point as a Honda Pilot, or a Model 3 at the same price point as a Toyota Camry? That would obviously be a major coup!

For anyone wondering what the new permanent magnets are, most likely it's Tetrateanite. Tetrateanite is a rare earth MINERAL, composed entirely of common elements, unlike rare earth magnets. So while tetrateanite rarely occurs on earth, it's quite common on asteroids where it formed over millions of years. Last year however materials scientists figured out how to create tetrateanite extremely easily and released the information to the public, allowing for the bulk manufacture of the material. The recipe is this, 49+% iron, 49+% nickel and a doping of phosphorus, pour molten mixture into a mold, and cool in the presense of a powerful magnetic field. Tetrateanite magnets are stronger then Neodymium magnets, far far cheaper, and way greener to manufacture.

The new motors are great but my problem with electric vehicles is their range still. We need a step forward in our battery technology and battery capacity. I know there we a few new break throughs that reduced the weight and greatly increased capacity that I read a while back and I hope to see this adopted by the industry in the future. Henry Ford and Elon Musk were both visionary business leaders and entrepreneurs who made significant contributions to their respective industries. However, there are some notable differences in the ways they were viewed and treated during their lifetimes.
Henry Ford is often credited with revolutionizing the automobile industry by introducing the assembly line manufacturing process, which enabled the mass production of affordable automobiles. He was also known for his innovative management techniques and his commitment to paying his workers a high wage.
During his lifetime, Ford was widely celebrated as a hero of the American economy, and his name became synonymous with American innovation and progress. However, his later years were marked by controversy, including accusations of anti-Semitism and his association with the Nazi regime during World War II. ( In 1938, Ford was awarded the Grand Cross of the German Eagle, the highest medal that Nazi Germany could bestow on a foreigner, for his services to the Nazi regime)
Elon Musk, on the other hand, is a more controversial figure in the public eye. While he is also credited with revolutionizing industries, such as electric cars and space exploration, he has also been criticized for his management style, his controversial tweets, and his interactions with the media.
Musk has a dedicated following of fans who view him as a visionary entrepreneur who is pushing the boundaries of what is possible, but he has also faced criticism and skepticism from some quarters, particularly around issues such as labor practices at his companies and his personal conduct.
In summary, while both Henry Ford and Elon Musk were celebrated for their innovations and contributions to their respective industries, their legacies and public perception differ due to the different contexts in which they lived and operated.

Legacy companies are all ran by business people who protect the overhead of multiple layers of managers. Tesla replaced managers with software that allows engineers to self manage everything: projects, administrative tools, purchasing tools/materials, customer feedback/returns, realtime factory line monitoring, realtime test result monitoring, realtime supplier monitoring, etc. Tesla calls it "digital self management". This means engineers make all the decisions at tesla, not a manager who doesn't understand engineering. That was basically the cash that they could have used for a stock buyback.

But I am definitely in favour of stopping the dreadful process involved in acquiring these rare earth materials , which is often done by child labour .

If they achieve this, and proove further that an electric car can last not only more efficiently, but also for longer product longevity. They will have dominated the car market by ~2035...

"Hairpin technology" has been around for decades. In any other industry, it's called a form wound motor. Not sure what information you've been looking at, but you will find formed windings are more or less a standard for applications where the motor is driven by a VFD. They are commercially available from dozens of manufacturers.

  • @cristerhelin8532

I am sorry to point out a few things mentioned in this video that are not correct. 1; Using square copper windings (today referred to as "hairpin" windings) is not at all a new technology, it is almost 100 years since the first electric motors and generators were winded with square profile copper cables. 2; NO high electrical currrents are routed through the two big square formed integrated circuits (pictured at 8:17), those circuits are CPU's (Central Processing Units). The high AC and DC current used in an EV are handled with specific power semiconductors like CMOS and Thyristors (several in parallell), which are not seen on this picture. What those type of semi-conductors have in common is that they dissipate heat that needs to be handled with different type of cooling system, in order to make them work continously.

About the Hairpin windings- it doesn't seem that unique except that the process is being used to create the stator, rather than as usual in an old DC motor rotor. Watch the rebuild process of a automobile starter in India- they (under very difficult conditions) dismantle the Hairpin windings, anneal them, skillfully bend their shape, cleanup the rotor and commutator, and solder them back to the commutator. It remains to be seen if the new magnets are scalable, and that they are heat resistant enough. If so, it would reduce the cost. I don't see that happening until they have fully tested the motor under all conditions.

cool stuff, but the support structure is a deal breaker for me. i just can't get on board until servicing them is a comparable experience to at least other dealerships (nevermind the ubiquitous generic and chain mechanic shops). imagine taking in your ford or toyota needing some dealer-only system maintenance and not even getting an idea of how many weeks or months it will take before you can be scheduled, nor how many it will take once they have your car. i can't possibly be alone marking that unacceptable. and that's what's going on with a volume well short of 20M more of them each additional year.
it'll never happen until a solid work force exists. the clear solution is to train a lot of people really well, which first requires greatly reducing the barrier of entry and earnest recruitment.
so i hope someone's on that, and not elon, either, rather someone who actually understands the workers, the HR responsibilities, and the reason any of it can exist: the customer!

EVs are an abomination and threat to all our freedom. theres only enough lithium and other minerals to replace 10-15% of gasoline cars on earth. thats means if the sheep allow them to make gas illegal, we soon will all be on foot and only the 15% of the elites Govs and privileged will be driving. The big push for EVs is not to save the planet, its actually much worse as every town city will be surrounded by open pit mines, nuclear power plants and gigantic recycling centers.... The push is to control us and remove our freedom of movement. hence why they are already planing 15 min cities where 1 million people will walk and be monitored with facial recognition cameras in every store every street light

@@bigbadbootydaddy616 They absolutely need to be made with abundant materials. Huge investment is in progress toward that end, including the 0% rare earth motors which i'm sure you'll recall from the video, and multiple battery technologies. Meanwhile, greatly reducing the amounts used must be an intermediate step.
Now, I'm not sure who you meant to reply to, but I didn't say _any fucking thing_ about making gas illegal. That surely would be problematic. Still, petroleum, just like lithium, neodymium, etc is also a limited resource, so it's not gonna last forever either.
As far as a threat to freedom and movement, technology advancements continue to reduce cost and increase range. That's not done happening. Whereas there will be a day when it's petroleum that will be so expensive it will be only attainable by the wealthy, due to its diminishing supply and increased cost of extraction.
