A note about moria: Dwarves have long lives and are so hyperfocused on their crafts that its not uncommon for a whole city to be working on something super legit, and lose contact with the outside for like 20+ years at a time, and no other dwarven settlements are worried, because thats just how dwarves be doin.
I believe that the LOTR movies failed to do Frodo justice. In the movies, when Frodo encounters the Nazgul, he flings his sword to the ground and cowers in terror. In contrast, Frodo tries to fight back in the book version despite being terrified and even succeeds in stabbing the Witch-King in the foot.
"...The third was taller than the others: his hair was long and gleaming and on his helm was a crown. In one hand he held a long sword, and in the other a knife; both the knife and the hand that held it glowed with a pale light. He sprang forward and bore down on Frodo.
At that moment Frodo threw himself forward on the ground, and he heard himself crying aloud: O Elbereth! Gilthoniel! At the same time he struck at the feet of his enemy. A shrill cry rang out in the night; and he felt a pain like a dart of poisoned ice pierce his left shoulder."

Quick facts:
- Aragorn is not Isildors son but he is a decendent of his line of heritage. It has been about 3000 years since Isildor died.
- It wasn't Frodo's fault that the Urukai orcs found them. They had been on their trail for a while. It was bound to happen.
- At 32:25 when the lead orc threw the knife at Aragorn, it was a real knife and the stuntman misthrew it and it was only Viggo Mortgenson's (Aragorn) reflexes that was able to have him deflect it with his sword and keep him from getting seriously injured
- Frodo may not be a great fighter but he has heart in a different way. That's how he can carry the ring and not easily corrupted by it. I'll guarantee you that he's going to piss you off many more times in the next two movies. Just remember the toll that the ring is taking on him. The times he put the ring on (other than the first time in the tavern which was a mistake) he felt that he had no other way out.

For some reason I think the knife incident was that the prop knife did not get switched in for the real knife. But I could be wrong.

If I remember the behind the scene xtras on the DVD's, it was caused by the fact the prosthetics that Lurtz was wearing severely restricted his vision & during the fight
(Viggo Mortensen was known to SERIOUSLY go full tilt) it got even more messed up w/the head butt to the point of obscuring his vision completely.
Hobbits have a resistance to the ring because in general they do not desire power, but they are not immune to it. Like at the beginning they show all hobbits want to do is eat, drink, and chill. Frodo goes off by himself because he knows he can't trust everyone due to the rings influence and also he feels like he is causing them strife by letting them be around it and doesnt want to burden them as well.
Exactly, the ring seems to find a persons wants/needs and fears and turn it up to terrible levels. Also, Sauron didn't make any rings for the squirrels, rabbits or bears because they have no power for him to control, I think it was for the same reasons he didn't make rings for the Hobbits. I doubt he considered them at all while forging any of the rings; his hatred for man, elf and dwarf blinding him to all else. For it's purpose, The One Ring is ill-suited to Hobbits. Sauron's dismissal of the powerless ends up being his downfall. That's how I like to interpret it anyway.
Yep. It also seems to make a difference how the person comes into possession of the ring too, tho. Note that Bilbo spared Gollum's life in the cave when he found it and aside from some greed/dishonesty (Bilbo lies about how he got the ring at first) it doesn't affect him much for the next 60 years.
People overlook Merry and Pippen had so much heart, fighting with boromir for their lives…for two little hobbits. And to many more

Sam really is the hero of the story. The line "Yet hope remains while company is true" while the camera pans over to Sam is some big foreshadowing.

FOR MY BOY DEVIN G (context for ya, no spoiler)The ring will eventually start corrupting everyone around him, the longer they all stayed together. Thats why Frodo had to leave, and go at it alone, he didnt want to, but he realized he has to, especially because the Men are easily corrupted, with Boromir tensions were rising. It would eventually happen to everyone around Frodo. Maybe not the hobbit’s right away. Hobbits are more of pure heart, thats why they arent easily corrupted by the ring like everyone else. As Frodo looking weak and annoying, understandable, hes not that annoying in the books. BUT u gotta keep in mind the ring is slowly corrupting him, and feeling heavier to carry, its good Sam is with him to make sure hes okay. It really is a burden. The temptation from the ring is ridiculous. Also had they all stayed together, eventually they would all fight over the ring, causing more times it being worn…further endangering the quest.
Hold on tight, EACH MOVIE IT GETS BETTER AND BETTER, I suggest watching with subtitles because they pronounce some crazy names and words 👍👍👍👍

Sean Astin should have won an Oscar for the best supporting actor, for the first, but for sure, for his acting in the third part. It was the best acting in the decade
I think he got snubbed for sure but you can't argue with Ian McKellan being nominated. He deserved it.
Galadriel's gift to Gimli has deeper meaning behind it, like most things in this movie & reflects the expanded lore of the middle earth universe. She is one of the 2-3 most powerful & wise elves remaining in Middle Earth since the time the land was young. She was born in a place called Valinor, or the Undying land... which is basically the place of residence of the Valar, the local pantheon, the local "gods" as you may call them. (Essentially the land that be untouched by Morgoth and where the holy ones still yet reside.)
Back then, the world was not illuminated by the sun&moon, (only the stars, but rather by 2 trees of gold and silver, Telperion and Laurëlin that lit the world before the sun & moon were born from their last flower & fruit as they were basically killed by Melkor when he struck them with his Lance and Ungoliant the primordial Eldrich Terror vampirized the life force of the two trees. Ungoliant she was named by the Eldar/Elves).
It is said that Galadriel's hair had enmeshed some of the shine and power of those two trees within her tresses. Her uncle Fëanor, who was a great king of the Elven people after his father Finwë was slain by Morgoth(Formally known as Melkor).
Fëanor arguably was their greatest craftsman and warrior to ever live, asked if she could give him a lock of hair, so that he could use it to fashion 3 gems that would shine of the same light as the trees. Sensing his pride & a shadow that wasn’t exactly belonging to him brewing from within, she refused his request 3 times. He stopped asking and made the gems anyway, managing to complete the task he had set for himself even without her hair.
Around these 3 gems, the possession of which became the driving force for many of the great events in the world, entire wars that lasted for centuries exploded, and other events. The gems actively shaped the fate of the races of middle earth to the point that the aforementioned Valar got involved directly. During these times, events surrounding the gems brought about the traditional enmity between Dwarves and Elves... the same enmity that Gimli still feels towards them.
That enmity however does not survive his encounter with the wise Galadriel, whom Gimli basically falls platonically in love with. By giving him 3 of her hair, Galadriel is opening a door, offering an olive branch that might one day close the gap that divides these two races. Legolas, himself being an Elven prince and centuries old, knows of the story through his father Thranduil & grandfather Oropher, as it shaped the lives of all Elves, and his subtle smile is possibly the first act of acknowledgment and reconciliation.
it is also a way for Peter Jackson, the director of the film, to give a nod to all of the fans who know these facts and backstories... a way to make us feel seen, and to make us appreciate just how deeply the makers of the film respect the books and larger universe created by Tolkien.
The thing with the hair may seem weird, but there is a significance to it in real life as well as in the lore of the story. In real life, it was not uncommon for wives, fiancés, or even girlfriends to give their men (who were going off to war), a lock of their hair as a keepsake, particularly in WWI, which Tolkien fought in.
The lore part of it comes into play in The Silmarillion, Tolkien's tales of the creation of Arda, the Undying Lands of Valinor, and Middle Earth. Galadriel is many, many thousands of years old, & was born in Valinor before the sun & moon were even created.
At the time, the world was lit by two trees, one gold and one silver which would shine at different times from each other, but would shine together once a day when one would fade and the other brighten. Galadriel's hair was said to look like the light of the mingled light from the two trees, which may have inspired Feanor, a master craftsman and heir to the high king of the Ñoldor, to craft the Silmaril's which were three jewels that captured the light of the two trees, one golden light, one silver light, & one co-mingled light.
Fëanor had a bit of a thing for Galadriel and begged her for her hair three different times, which she rejected because she could perceive the inner darkness of his heart and rejected him, which made them "un-friends" after that. There is a lot more to the lore than that, so this is the super crib-notes version.
But the point is, it was VERY significant that she granted Gimli three of her hairs to a dwarf, when she would not to the son of her king (great uncle) over 10,000 thousand years ago of which she is related to all three kings who were brothers and Elu Thingol of Doriath was one of the brothers that didn’t stay in Valinor even though he was one of the elven ambassadors along with his three brothers and that king I mentioned was VERY close friends with Thingol.)
The Orcs finding them at the end was not Frodo's fault. The Orcs were already tracking them and almost on them anyway. The Orcs can't feel the presence of the Ring either.
The Carahdras Battle is so telling of what they mean to the Universe itself able to influence the spirit of a Mountain with words.
This movie is pretty epic... until you see the next two!

Frodo in these movies is fighting the tough fight of the mental aspect of fighting evil with, while everyone else fights like a warrior.
Fighting the spiritual aspect, too, since the Ring is spiritually corrosive, 24/7.
A very important point that does not spoil anything at all but hopefully gives an easier perspective:
Sam absolutely deserves ALL the praise he gets. One thing that is sometimes hard to pick up in the films though is what exactly Frodo is going through, so as you continue this journey remember:
-Frodo was stabbed by a Morgul blade, which will never fully heal and will always bother him
-The Ring bears both a mental AND physicsl weight. It is getting physically heavier and weighing him down.
-The mental strain is that of Sauron, who is essentially a Fallen Angel of one of the highest orders. He is far more powerful than Gandalf or the Balrog (fire demon). Every time Frodo slips on the Ring, it's easy to think it is weakness, but every literal second he does NOT put on the Ring, is actually a testament to his mental fortitude and strength.
-Remember these as he no doubt makes some questionable decisions. Gollum was fully corrupted, Gandalf was afraid to touch it, Boromir fell to it despite being such a good man, Galadriel struggled, and Aragorn struggled to resist jt.
Frodo truly is one of the strongest members of the Fellowship because of his heart and mind.
Plus the ring grows ever stronger the closer it comes to the place it was created.
This! People don’t seem to understand the psychological burden Frodo carries on the quest. Basically because it isn’t spelled out and signposted for them. It genuinely irks me.
SO what you may have missed is that he came to the conclusion that eventually that ring would corrupt the fellowship and someone would have tried to take the ring from him. To save them and the world he needed to go the rest of the way alone. However the hobbits are the only ones who hadn't tried to take the ring. Therefore he allowed Sam to come along because of that plus he couldn't bare doing it all alone.
I remember seeing this in theaters. Those were the days.

Frodo puts on the ring because the ring wants to be found. No one is safe from the ring's power but Frodo is the most capable of bearing the burden. I hope that makes sense.
Aragorn is a hero. Sam is the hero. Sam is a nobody, but he has heart and will do anything for his friends.

I don't remember if that was the fight scene were Viggo broke a tooth. He finished filming the scene before Peter Jackson had him flown by helicopter to his own dentist to fix it.
@@rikk319 if I remember right that happened while filming Helm's Deep. he was like "just get some superglue, we'll just stick it back on and keep going" but they got him emergency dental work. evidently he went in costume with all the blood and dirt still on him because he wanted continuity to be right and was back on set within like 30 minutes lol :P
I think alot of people get mad about frodo always running and stuff. But people forget Hobbit are a peaceful people. I don't think they even have weapons.
The music that plays when Gandalf falls is the sound a heart makes when it’s breaking.
Edit: It’s not just that Frodo doesn’t trust the Fellowship. He’s trying to protect them from the Ring.
You don't have to wait for The Two Towers. You can bring it up any time you want to. Back when these movies were released, though, we die-hard Tolkien fans had to wait a full year (to the day) for the next movie.

this is the greatest movie ever made. i was 17 when i saw this in the theater. i'll be 40 in a couple weeks and this has been my favorite movie to this day. I'm so glad to see you enjoying it.

Frodo is the strongest of the fellowship his strength is measured in a different way.
It's not being evil that attract you to the Ring, it's ambition/desire/motivation. The bigger they are the harder it will be to resist. Boromir want to protect Gondor from Sauron and use the Ring for it. Gandalf would use it's power to help everyone. But what does a hobbit want?
Smoking weed, eat, drink, take it easy. Nothing for The Ring to get a grip on.

Love all your reactions. You gotta remember back to when we first meet Frodo. He's sitting under a tree, reading a book. This young hobbit is not a fighter. Yet he keeps pushing forward one step at a time, despite everything around him (and inside him because of the ring) telling him he should give up. Sam is undoubtedly the number one hero of this story, but frodo consistently does what must be done to literally save the world.

It’s not that elves aren’t supposed to be with men it’s just that elves are immortal so he would grow old and die and she will never age and have to watch him die.
Frodo realises that the ring would eventually take hold of everyone in the party, the will of sauron is far greater than that of anyone there.
The movies don't cover this, but Lady Galadriel is Arwen's grandmother on her mother's side of the family.

You need to consider things in relation to others: Frodo is fking up periodically, but he doing better than anyone else. They are tempted simply by being near a ring, let alone touching it. So from 2 evils - you just have to pick lesser one in this situation.

As someone who first read the book 55 years ago and have watched the films for 25, it was a joy to relive the experience of seeing the films for the first time... They are so well constructed that every time you had a question, the film answered within minutes. And you caught so many of the important points... Right on, bro!
The elvish songs of lamentation were for Gandalf when they arrived in Lothlórien. So the song you hear is literally for him whilst being a theme for the movie itself. The only excerpt from these songs is "Mithrandir, Mithrandir, O Pilgrim Grey!"
This was expanded & set to music by Philippa Boyens & Howard Shore, respectively, for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
It was sung in the said film by Elizabeth Fraser in the track Lothlórien. Notable about this song is that it assumes that the elves of Lothlórien were aware that Gandalf was an incarnate Maia. This is debatable. As well, the lyrics ask "What drove you to leave/That which you loved?". This suggests that Gandalf was well aware that he would fall in Moria.
Other debatable verses include the claims that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar, and that with him the Flame of Anor would leave the world (assuming that it and he were one, or he was the only wielder of the Flame).

And Since Gandalf is tied to the story and fate of the elves as he is one of the Maiar spirits is that when one perishes it tends to be a big deal when something like one “dies” if you will. Spending thousands of years together even in his current embodiment is still greatly impactful upon his death.
Everyone does need a friend like Sam, you will see in the end what a true warrior he is 👌🔥
Galadriel told Frodo that the task was appointed to him and him alone. She warned him that one by one the others would fall into darkness. This could be missed on a first watch.
After his encounter with Boromir proving her point, he did as she said and distanced himself from the rest of the fellowship, to protect them, not to run away. My interpretation was he knew he had to but was terrified of leaving until Gandalfs words gave him resolve.
Frodo showed courage by accepting the position and responsibility he had found himself with.
Probably the geekiest comment I've ever written but felt the need to lay this out there.

You don't understand the ring is affecting him. And also the wound in shoulder affects him too.
And like Gandalf said, the Ring attracts evil to itself. The nazgul's stabbing, the Watcher In The Water choosing Frodo, the troll going after him in Moria...it's all because of the Ring putting a crosshair on Frodo.

I honestly don't remember when I've enjoyed someone this much, with my beloved tale. This is wonderful.
These 3 movies - the extended editions - are absolute masterpieces. So are the theatrical releases, but the extended versions add so much!
So excited for you to react to this trilogy, one of the best stories ever told IMO. One interesting tidbit I like to tell first time watchers, when Galadriel (the elf queen) was giving gifts to everyone and Legolas asked Gimli what she gave him and he told her about the 3 strands of hair when he only asked for one, Legolas gives a knowing smile. The short version is way back when Galadriel was young, her uncle Faenor (who was probably one of the most powerful and skilled elf ever) wanted to create these powerful gems and Galadriel's hair was renowned for being so beautiful and a golden silver. Faenor wanted to capture the golden silver light into a gem like he did captured the light of magic trees with the others he made, so three times he asked her for one strand of hair. And three times she refused him, able to see the greed and arrogant pride within him. Pretty much every elf knows this story, so Legolas smiled knowing Gimli was so pure he got what Faenor couldn't, three times over. To me, that's what really changed Legolas' mind about dwarves. Gimli in particular.
Legolas come from a forest north east of Lothlorian called Mirkwood. The elves from Lothlorian, and Legolas’ elves are ancient kin, but have little to do with one another mostly due to grudge held by Legolas’ father over the death of his grandfather in the Second Age. This isolation by the Mirkwood elves was particularly severe by the Third Age when LOTR is set. ❤

great reaction.. but the point is that hobbits like Sam and Frodo and Merry and Pippin, aren't warriors, or even soldiers, they're quiet country folk, so in times of crisis or battle, it isnt surprising they make mistakes and mess up, most of us ordinary folk would too......what's special about the hobbits is that they dont give up, they stick to their mission, and carry on against all odds...and they show real courage as the movies progress, you'll see........dont be too hard on poor old Frodo, he's got the weight of the Ring on his shoulders, and the responsibility to have to complete the quest, no matter what............

When you haven't read the books, it's easy to blame Frodo for a lot of things. But the ring's power is incomprehensible. Remenber that it has a will of its own, and it has a way of taking over the will of nearly anyone that has it or even comes near to it.
Gandalf knew this, and he knew that the ring feeds on and controls the will of everyone around it. That's why Gandalf and Aragorn cannot take it. As powerful as they are, it would magnify that power and control it for its own purposes.
No matter who carries it, no one can withstand its power.
At this point in the books, Frodo has been carrying the ring for months, and he's still mostly in control of himself. No one else, except maybe one particular other hobbit could have lasted this long.
Also, as addicted to the ring as Bilbo is, Bilbo never would have destroyed it.

Boromirs death hit me sp hard everytime, he was possesses by the ring like evrvyone should but he was an honor man and a warrior ,he never been a bad guy , when he died i cried so badly and yes he kept his honor , Son of Gondor

When Frodo put the ring on in the "prancing pony" it even wasn't an accident, it was the will of the ring. When he put it on on "weathertop" he tried to escape, the nazgul would have found it anyway. And when he put it on at the "rauros falls" he tried to escape Boromir who was about to take it in the next second and this would have been the end of all. Boromir was corrupted by the ring so again it was the will of the ring not Frodos.

It's not that frodo doesn't trust them. The Ring houses the a soul of an almost all powerful demigod and by that nature is all corrupting, everyone at some point will fall the the Ring's will, that's why Gandalf didn't want to take the Ring from Frodo when he offered it back in the Shire. The Ring will always win, the only one to completely reject the Ring was Bilbo. But I do understand you're frustration with Frodo. Also, you're right Sam is the MVP.
Here is more stuff that connects to when Morgoth killed Fëanor’s father Finwë (as described in beginning of p1 of Gal’s Mark Of Tragedy): The First Kinslaying occurred before the Helcaraxë. It took place in the city of Alqualondë on the shores of Aman when the Noldor, lead by Fëanor, stole the ships of the Teleri (which also that clan didn’t like the energy coming from Fëanor but also didn’t want to start another war with Morgoth ontop of Teleri being rather peaceful in general; along with the fact it was all just a bit rash on their perspective so to speak to leave for Middle-earth, resulting in the deaths of many Teleri.
This act was a major turning point in the history of the Elves and led to the estrangement of the Noldor and the Valar. This is the battle where I may have mentioned in the Galadriel hair comment. Where she was defending her mothers people from Fëanor and his army which is one of the main reasons he backed the hell off. She’s a very cool character. One of the most beloved still alive in middle ear to after so many ages of the world had passed into the third age that you’re watching this movie in!)
•The decision to leave Aman and journey to Middle-earth was a choice made by the Noldor, led by Fëanor, on their own. They were driven by their desire to reclaim the Silmarils, which had been stolen by Morgoth, and to avenge the deaths of their kin who had been killed in the pursuit of the jewels.
The journey through the Helcaraxë was a difficult one, and many of the Noldor perished along the way. However, it was not seen as a punishment, but rather as a test of endurance and resilience. Those who survived the journey were strengthened by it and became more powerful as a result.

This isn’t even 10 percent of the whole story just with her life and the life of her family shaped middle earth as we know it and made sure survival into the ages was even possible. Especially for both men and elves. She even among many elves is a living example of a bygone era for both kindreds.
