people who have a hard time understanding why Landa betrayed the germans so fast, let me tell you.
He's not a nazi because he agrees with their ideology, he's a psychopath who likes playing detective and being in the nazi party gives him that power to have fun with people. He has nooooo feelings for them, or Hitler, or even Germany, all he cares about is being the winner and playing his game, and his game is outsmarting people. Many times he could've just gave the order to his soldiers, he already knew what is going on, instead he plays with his food, he's being funny, and then his face changes when he gets to that "got you" moment, and he wants you to know, he KNOWS he got you before you die.
I see him betraying the nazis like this : if i wasn't here, the Americans would've succeeded with their plan, so the germans don't deserve me anymore. I'm out, bye-bye

    • @perrycarters3113

I think that's why he broke down laughing when talking to Bridget.
He was like "This weak, flimsy facade is what collapses the Nazi regime? This joke of an operation that the barest of scrutiny can pierce is what threatens to undo all of Nazi Germany?"
And, to be clear, if there were Allied lines within a couple hour drive of Paris, France, then D-Day had already come and gone. The writing was on the wall; someone as smart as Landa knows Germany has lost already, it's a matter of them just taking a long time to go down.
When Nazi Germany was at its height and was ruthless, efficient and at its most powerful, I imagine Landa served with pride because he enjoyed serving an effective, competent regime that rewards competence.
Then you have the comedic cavalcade of incompetence that followed German domination in mainland Europe that inevitably resulted in the tide of the war turning against them, and Landa is no longer serving a competent, effective regime, he is serving a failing authoritarian one clinging to power long after its fate was already decided.
I legitimately think Landa had a hand in setting up Hitler's fall intentionally well before Operation Keno. It wouldn't surprise me to learn he was involved in the decision to change venue to make it easier for the Basterds, that he was involved in influencing Hitler to attend the premiere, or that he was involved in leaking that information to the attendees so any defectors could alert the Basterds so he could make contact with them and engineer his own defection.
There's evidence he knew who Shoshanna was and did nothing because he no longer cared, and maybe even hoped she would do what she did as a failsafe in case the Basterds failed and he could take credit. He had solid proof of Bridget's association with the Basterds the day before the premiere and did nothing, told nobody.
Landa was already working on his exit from Nazi Germany by the time we see him at the restaurant. He just refused to retire into obscurity and go into hiding. He wanted what he felt he deserved for being an effective servant, but if Germany fell and he with it, he never would.

“Why didn’t they just leave?” The Jews tried to leave Germany leading up to WW2, but allied countries including the U.K. and U.S. limited Jewish immigration and in some cases like Palestine(Israel), the UK even prevented Jews from moving there from Germany until after the war.

In the scene where he insists that she wait for the cream before eating the strudel, this is a test. Strudel back then would have been made with pork fat. It is against Kosher law to mix pork and dairy. So if she was Jewish it's supposed to be wrong for her to eat that. Obviously she does to save her own ass.

He gave his identity up in the pub by how he held his 3 fingers when ordering the drinks- Germans would use number 3 by holding thumb up where as the guy in bar had thumb on pinky 😂 I know it’s crazy but yea

I wonder why Tarantino decided "basterds" in the title was better than the correct spelling.

Fun fact(IIRC): In the scene where Hans(Waltz) is strangling Bridget(Kruger), those hands are actually Tarantino's. Kruger agreed to it, but tarantino briefly, actually strangled her. And it was 1 take.
