4" wheels with a 5/8" hole are meant to be used on a 4" pneumatic or 4" electric grinder with a 3/8" or M10 arbor (threads). The centering flange is 5/8". 4.5" angle grinders are meant to use 4.5" wheels with a 7/8" hole. They can also use thread on 5/8-11 attachments. The threads (arbor) are 5/8-11 but the centering flange is 7/8". Thicker 4" wheels with a 5/8" hole may fit on a 4.5" grinder but may be slightly off center as shown in the video. A 4" cutoff wheel will not center at all. Hope this helps someone out there.

Hey Aaron... Good Explanation. I bought a Craftsman 900 series angle grinder about 10-12 years ago and it has a smaller (3/8") arbor. It works like a charm but I really wish it had a 5/8-11 arbor because the small size limits choices for things like velcro sanding adapters. Is there any way to retrofit a 5/8-11 arbor to my craftsman? Or should I just buy a newer machine?-Mike

Thanks a million, it's such common knowledge that I never know, when at the store

Thank you so much!! No one at Harbor Freight knew this so I bought an adapter online which turned out to be the same size 🤭. wish I had seen this earlier but very happy to finally be able to buy the sanding flap wheels!

Found your video after googling about why both of the collars had those lips when the cutting disc I was using was only thick enough to fit over one of them. Thanks for the explanation.

Incredibly valuable info for a guy who recently acquired his first angle grinder. The industry should have more clarity in their literature.

Im glad it helped a bit. These few things get overlooked a lot and cause problems. Thanks for watching!

@thesprinkleddonutforge2774 ~ I'm no Bob Villa and I'm a bit challenged when it comes to some handyman tasks. Case in point, the previous homeowners left a few old cut-off chain link fence posts basically just above ground-level. I spent weeks trying to remove the hazardous posts, but gave up because of the giant concrete bottoms. About did my old self in trying to get them out. Then I thought, why not get one of those macho angle grinders? Pffft. I'm seeing all these discs on the market for my new tool, and I was so lost with that size discrepancy!
      Thank you. Be blessed!

I'm glad you watched it! The more we know about our tools the more we can do with them safely. That's the big thing. These grinders were designed and rated to use the proper discs. It's when we try to "make it fit" that most problems occur. Also wear goggles, use the guard, and beware breathing the grinding debris. It's gotten me sick before. Dust masks are weak protection. Dust respirators are ideal. Lighter weight than paint and chemical respirators. 3M makes some good ones.

Good tip. Never gave it a thought, though I did learn about which way the collar has to go for the different wheels.

Green Bee Blacksmithing I didn't give a lot of thought to it either until I discovered that the fit and function of my grinder attachments needed different treatment to perform properly. I will share any pearls of wisdom I run across. Thanks for following along!

I bought a HF Bauer 8 amp 4 1/2” angles grinder. The directions say to use a disc with 5/8” arbor hole. - threaded and non-threaded discs?

Are they also called it spindle diameter..?seller online sometimes had incomplete details of products..tnx

I bought a grinding flip disk with a fat thick nut in the center instead of the big opening the two nuts clamp around and it doesnt even screw on right to my angle grinder 🤷‍♂️ it won't get tight, clearly a different size but it doesn't specify thread diameter size on it anywhere.

My suggestion is to bring the machine with you into the store. There shouldnt be any issue with you trying them out before you buy one that doesn't fit correctly.

Grandadz Forge I have another friend who had the same issue. I hope this helps a few folks out. You can make the wrong wheel stay on but it's very very dangerous and I would never recommend anything that doesn't fit properly.

@Rob Man ,A certain degree of common sense is expected when dealing with power tools or commenting on a video.
Instead of analyzing and condemning my performance of years ago, why don't you read the instructions on your tools instead?
