How To Free Up An Angle Grinder Disc That's REALLY Stuck

  • This video won't mean a lot to most people, but if your angle grinder nut has become jammed, seized, locked, rusted or just plain too tight, then you'll know how frustrating it is. This is how we solved the problem and we hope it helps you.
(Yes, I know how lucky we were to have two grinders available (how lucky we are to have one at all, I think) -- but here's a suggestion for you if you don't: Try holding a cutting disc up against the rotating grinder. I haven't tried it but surely it should work too?)
Remember - safety equipment at all times, ok? Be careful.

pipe wrench will do it, remove all parts of the disc you can remove, pour some oil into it, let it sit overnight, then pipe wrench

I had a Bosch 9 inch angle grinder that has been locked up for over 5 years, tried all the usual, even welded a nut onto the plate but this idea worked except I didn't have a 1mm disk around so I used and old 5 inch diamond disk. Less than 2 minutes and I have now recovered my grinder. I have had that grinder for 30 years so I am really pleased to have it making sparks again. If you are ever around this way I owe you a beer or two mate.

I just had a grinder nut over-tighten while using it; oil or heat didn't help. The main issue is that the key is terrible, either too soft and bends, or simply slips out of the holes when applying pressure.
My solution was to use my little Dremel to grind down small flat sections on the sides of the nut and use a wrench. I don't see why they aren't designed this way from the beginning, much easier!

Wonderful. Many thanks, you saved my life. Just one thing, as I didn't have a second grinder, I first used an ordinary hacksaw. However as the hacksaw blade is thin, I switched to an old panel saw whose blade thickness is similar to the grinder disc and it worked a treat! Thanks again.

Ok everyone, I didn't think it was necessary to say that I had tried all the obvious things first - but it seems I should have done. OF COURSE I used the special tool that comes with the grinder, AND I put WD40 oil on it, AND I tapped the holes with a hammer AND I tried vice-grips. I am not stupid. (In fact I didn't try heating the nut for fear of heating the gears too much, perhaps I should have done but perhaps I would have wreaked the whole machine.)
This video is about what happened AFTER I had tried all those things and still nothing had moved. It seems most people have never experienced a grinder that is really stuck - and it has only happened to me twice in my life - but when it does happen to you, then I hope will find this helpful.

I struggled and struggled with this issue. Then I saw your video. I spent no more than 7 or 8 mins doing exactly as you said.I cleaned out the old wheel with my other grinder ,barely tapped the nut and it spun free. Thanks so much !! It occurred to me that a dremel with a cutting wheel or even a hack saw would work too.

I had this problem, never thought of your remedy which suited me fine as the existing blade was knackered and needed replacing. Used some WD40. Smashed the old blade off, more WD40, tried with a plumber's wrench and with easier access the nut came free. One can use hexa blade and little oil or thinnest file one can get to wedge between two holderers to cut the cutting wheel hub till the central nut. This video has been very helpful. Critics might say n number of things about scond grinder but it really quickens the process. Having friends with second grinder can also be useful. A craftsman has think out of box.

Already broken the spindle lock housing on an almost new angle grinder trying to remove a really locked nut. This has NEVER happened before in my entire long lifetime. Two people battling for HOURS. I am about to try this. Will never use those thin cheaper discs on a large size angle grinder again - they seem to somehow almost FUSE the nut to the body so cutting it out like you've done is the ONLY OPTION LEFT & AWARD YOU A 🥇🥈🥉🏆if I get it right. THANKS.

🤣yeah ground myself into a locked disc yesterday. New grinder couple weeks old and newer model than my previous. Lighter and no kick starts. Anyways was cutting bed rails for scrap bin to fit and of course needed to change a mangled disc that ended up splitting during the job. Old grinder stopped working I’m pretty sure it was the switch so not scrapping that yet until I feel motivated to look into it. Anyways always something 🫵😜

I used a recpricating hacksaw with a bent blade instead of another grinder, and got the nut off without causing it much damage. I tried a flat packing washer behind the disk, but it still locked up. Thought I would put a bit of greese on the spindle next time and see if that helps. Thanks for the post.

  • @MattJonesYT
    @MattJonesYT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

If you have an expensive disc in the grinder you don't want to destroy you can drill a series of holes in the nut to perforate a channel that frees the pressure on the threads and allows you to get the nut off in pieces. Do that if a replacement nut is cheaper than the wheel.

Here's a good idea i do when putting new blade back on put malfiord between disk and wind up plate or even make up cardboard washer same size as plate gives buffer when having a kick back

Before you get to the stage of damaging the tool supplied with the grinder try grinding (with your second angle grinder) a 17mm open ender to give it a slimmer profile, it's very commonly that size, to fit the flats on the spacer block behind the disc. Being able to effectively lock the shaft will give you much more torque to undo the locking nut. I had to do this not long ago to remove a disc when the push in locking mechanism wasn't strong enough to hold.

    •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah, did that. Borrowed a grinder, made a thinner tool, because they didn't sell that fin, and then broke the two pokey thing tool....

it worked! I had a oscillating tool and channel lock pliers.
I would have used the tool that came with it but I kid you not that **** got bent after I put it in a vice and attempted to remove it by pushing the angle grinder up.
I'm happy but I'm also kinda pissed. It should not be THAT hard, why not make the disc thingy that pinches the disc a square in order to get more torque!?
    Whatever. Today was a success

Problem is where to find another one. Happened to me once. The reason which causes this problem is when you put the metal side of disk facing grinder motor. Always put the disk this way that its metal side is facing outwards not inwards.
Tip: always put a thin piece of paper size of tightening nut on both sides. I can guarantee you you'll never face this problem ever again

To add my 5 cents, if you happen to have one of those expensive diamond cut discs and therefore removal of disc is impossible, then you can get away with a hacksaw. All you need to do is cutting off sides of the nut itself and with reduced surface resistance you will be able to unscrew it after few cuts and save expensive disc. And cost of replacement nut is just a couple of bucks. Thanks

The nut self tightens are you use the grinder, mine locked up after using the cutting disk which seemed to put more torque on the nut. Guys try using a lighter. I mean use a vise to fix the blade or the disk then heat the nut by a lighter for a couple of minutes and then use a pipe wrench to remove the nut and there you go. By the way if the wrench doesn't work for the first time try taping the nut with a screwdriver and a hammer then use the wrench.

I have a surefire way. First turn the grinder upside down and to the left exactly 46 degrees. Close your dominant eye 34% and elevate your right foot to a 12 degree incline (if you are left handed it would be your left foot) don't forget to butter up the grinder with sweet encouraging compliments. Works everytime.

Better to clamp the grinder in a vise, then cut the damaged disk off flush with the lock nut. Then get something narrow like a gyproc knife and blade and with the grinder trigger pushed and spinning, work the gyproc blade in to wear down the broken disk. The disk will wear away and so will the gyroc blade and after a blade or two the broken disk will be gone. This method doesn't damage the grinder locknuts or shaft. The gyproc blade won't cut into the steel components. Best to use one of those knives with the sectional blades so you can keep extending more blade as it gets ground away.

I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, O Lord, show this also to thy servant: whether after death, as soon as every one of us yields up his soul, we shall be kept in rest until those times come when thou wilt renew the creation, or whether we shall be tormented at once?" 76 He answered me and said, "I will show you that also, but do not be associated with those who have shown scorn, nor number yourself among those who are tormented. 77 For you have a treasure of works laid up with the Most High; but it will not be shown to you until the last times.
78 Now, concerning death, the teaching is: When the decisive decree has gone forth from the Most High that a man shall die, as the spirit leaves the body to return again to him who gave it, first of all it adores the glory of the Most High. 79 And if it is one of those who have shown scorn and have not kept the way of the Most High, and who have despised his law, and who have hated those who fear the Most High -- 80 such spirits shall not enter into habitations, but shall immediately wander about in torments, ever grieving and sad, in seven ways.
81 The first way, because they have scorned the law of the Most High. 82 The second way, because they cannot now make a good repentance that they may live. 83 The third way, they shall see the reward laid up for those who have trusted the covenants of the Most High. 84 The fourth way, they shall consider the torment laid up for themselves in the last days. 85 The fifth way, they shall see how the habitations of the others are guarded by angels in profound quiet. 86 The sixth way, they shall see how some of them will pass over into torments. 87 The seventh way, which is worse than all the ways that have been mentioned, because they shall utterly waste away in confusion and be consumed with shame, and shall wither with fear at seeing the glory of the Most High before whom they sinned while they were alive, and before whom they are to be judged in the last times.
88 "Now this is the order of those who have kept the ways of the Most High, when they shall be separated from their mortal body. 89 During the time that they lived in it, they laboriously served the Most High, and withstood danger every hour, that they might keep the law of the Lawgiver perfectly. 90 Therefore this is the teaching concerning them: 91 First of all, they shall see with great joy the glory of him who receives them, for they shall have rest in seven orders.
    92 The first order, because they have striven with great effort to overcome the evil thought which was formed with them, that it might not lead them astray from life into death. 93 The second order, because they see the perplexity in which the souls of the unrighteous wander, and the punishment that awaits them. 94 The third order, they see the witness which he who formed them bears concerning them, that while they were alive they kept the law which was given them in trust. 95 The fourth order, they understand the rest which they now enjoy, being gathered into their chambers and guarded by angels in profound quiet, and the glory which awaits them in the last days. 96 The fifth order, they rejoice that they have now escaped what is corruptible, and shall inherit what is to come;
and besides they see the straits and toil from which they have been delivered, and the spacious liberty which they are to receive and enjoy in immortality. 97 The sixth order, when it is shown to them how their face is to shine like the sun, and how they are to be made like the light of the stars, being incorruptible from then on. 98 The seventh order, which is greater than all that have been mentioned, because they shall rejoice with boldness, and shall be confident without confusion, and shall be glad without fear, for they hasten to behold the face of him whom they served in life and from whom they are to receive their reward when glorified.
99 This is the order of the souls of the righteous, as henceforth is announced; and the aforesaid are the ways of torment which those who would not give heed shall suffer hereafter." 100 I answered and said, "Will time therefore be given to the souls, after they have been separated from the bodies, to see what you have described to me?" 101 He said to me, "They shall have freedom for seven days, so that during these seven days they may see the things of which you have been told, and afterwards they shall be gathered in their habitations."
102 I answered and said, "If I have found favor in thy sight, show further to me, thy servant, whether on the day of judgment the righteous will be able to intercede for the unrighteous or to entreat the Most High for them, 103 fathers for sons or sons for parents, brothers for brothers, relatives for their kinsmen, or friends for those who are most dear." 104 He answered me and said, "Since you have found favor in my sight, I will show you this also. The day of judgment is decisive and displays to all the seal of truth. Just as now a father does not send his son, or a son his father, or a master his servant, or a friend his dearest friend, to be ill or sleep or eat or be healed in his stead, 105 so no one shall ever pray for another on that day, neither shall any one lay a burden on another; for then every one shall bear his own righteousness and unrighteousness." 2 Esdras 7:75

I've only done the nut up finger tight, and hardly ever, need to use any tools at all to change the disc, simply press the look button, and undo the nut/remaining disc with my hand..

Just heat up the nut a bit, which will cause a bit of expansion of the nut and it will come loose.

Just heat up the nut a bit,not melt it.I would say about 200 degrees celsius. As it release, then you cool it with water immediately. It happened to me and I got this advise, done it and it worked.Just do it on your own risk, especially if your grinder got nylon gears. All grinders I know of,got metal gears.

So I guess that I'll have to buy a second grinder in order to be able to fix the first grinder. It sounds a bit asinine to have to have two of the same tool just so one can work. Okay, that gripe aside, I've noticed that the shaft for my grinder has two flat sides suggesting that if I can find a narrow enough wrench I 'should' be able to insert it for counter leverage. Since It appears that I've bent one of the nubs on the tightening wrench that came with the grinder, I'm going to have to buy a new one. Has anyone noticed those 'flat sides' on the shaft and tried a wrench?

i have a small butane in can with a torch then heat the nut for a few seconds. ruins the disk but ..
most of the time a nut gets stuck is because of a warped or broken disk.

The real question is "What should I do, not to get into this problem?"
I ask this coz it's happening frequently to me, now a days and please don't tell me "Don't ever buy from HarborFright again"... There has to be something that I'm missing when putting the blades on or may be after every work I should detach and remove the blade immediately or use some sort of silicon or gasket in between the blade and grinder attachment.... Any wise one with a hint?

Make sure you always have a little grease on the thread. Also it may be worth changing the nut - they are more likely to bind if they are worn. Good luck!

tried this worked well, used a dremel tool as i didnt have a second angle grinder but still effective enough. When i took the disc completely off could see that the nut had jumped a thread so i just used a crowbar to realign it.
