- Short clip of a multi day adventure in he southern french Alps, on my Svartpilen 401 highlighting the bikes off-road and touring abilities. Filmed with a Gorpo7 mounted on the handlebar.
Apparently, the answer is, "Yes, the Svartpilen 401 can be ridden off road!" Thanks for sharing this video. Gorgeous views.
Even the parts of France where nobody lives...are beautiful. Thanks for the video!
yes it can be ridden off road. I did some fast riding and also travelled with a passenger and the bike managed all terrains. I really love how multi purpose svartpilen 401 can be!
great video!
Great video! Thank you for sharing. I have been researching the 2021 model but this is just a great example of what these bikes can handle in general. This definitely answers the posed question! That was some gnarly terrain, coupled with your ability to navigate the terrain, that bike is well capable. Thanks again!
Thank you for your feedback and kind words ! This bike is definitely very versatile, and an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced riders.
Good video, thinking of buying this bike.
Great video! My Svartpilin is being delivered on Saturday, can't wait.
Enjoy the ride !
Scrambled dual. Best. Choice
Reroute the exhaust system to give the bike more ground clearance and it will go anywhere where a drz can. We've been off-roading a lot with my buddy who has a drz400 and I have no trouble keeping up with him. The stock wheels are perfect for off roading but it also has surprisingly good traction on asphalt road too.(Although we don't really go anywhere crazy just dirt roads just like the ones in this video)
Mine is a euro4 version, so with the exhaust set up relatively high. Euro 5 versions have a smaller ground clearance, which is a bummer...
Gorgeous! ❤️
I love this little Husqvarna Svartvillion aka Black Arrow, for both it's on and off road capabilities. Handles both with very little compromise. I'm leaning towards the 701 however. Very little weight difference between the two, but significant power increase.
I love both 701 models, but the Svartpilen version simply doesn't look like it has much of an off road capability beyond it's looks.
@@nicolasp3696 I've got a friend whose had one for about a year now. Said that the off road capabilities are extremely good. Credits weight a suspension being right in his wheelhouse. I was like you..skeptical. he did raise fenders, changed exhaust and put a more aggressive tire. Does far more off than on road. I'd like an opportunity to throw it around in the dirt a little before committing though.
@@nicolasp3696 my buddy only weighs about 135 pounds. Which I believe makes suspension travel more than adequate for him..I'm closer to 180.
Sounds like a nice set up. Would love to see the bike in action off road !
But the price is almost double...it puts the 701 in another league
.401 simply has no competition, with all the featureas and capabilities...
You can ride a Vespa off road. The problem with the Svartpilen, besides it's seventeen-inch front wheel, is the inadequate chain guard. After any distance on dirt or gravel, the rear tire will dump loads of dirt on the chain. If left unclean, the compromised chain and sprockets will significantly eat rear wheel horsepower... and then there's the cost of replacing said compromised drive system. A thin sheet of fiberglass riveted to the existing chain guard in the appropriate place might be a simple fix.
You can get a better one.
AND.... if you try to ride it fast, you'll end up having the front end go out from under you.... that's because the Svartpilens pegs are located too far rearward for dirt. They're positioned for the higher traction of asphalt... like GP Bikes.
So many bags on such small bike! Nice one. Do you have side pannier racks dedicated for this model ?
Hi, no I just installed the saddle bags on the rear end of the bike, secured with bungee cords and straps.
Hi also ride whit my svart 401 on no good roads and litlle off roads like you and also bike take me up and down to hill whit no problem. I see problem only whit rocks because i not have radiátor/cooler protection. And second problem is litlle fuel tank thats problem. I look how you put bags to your swart its super 👍 great tips
Beautiful scenery and a great looking urban scrambler/mule.. but are the bars high enough to stand on the pegs.. is there enough clearance below the exhaust pipe and the ground?
Thanks ! Yes the bars are high enough to stand, but it also depends on the riders height. I'm 184cm tall and I can ride standing , with my knees a little bit bent. It would be better to install some risers if I wanted to ride standing for extensive time. Concerning the clearance of the lower end of the bike, it's very relative to what you compare it to, but let's say it's enough to ride off road as long as you don't engage in enduro or ride in nasty rock gardens.
Very nice video! I'm thinking about buy one, I love how it looks, so urban and fun to ride, and very capable offroad also. 2020 version have adjustable suspension, and some other nice specs, but ground clearance is only 145mm, your model is 170mm, and I think 145mm is not enough for offroad... Probably I will buy a 2nd hand like yours, with less than 10.000km.
It could be a good idea, but you can also buy a 2020 and change the exhaust with some aftermarket one that won't take up so much space under the bike. To be honest, the front suspension is really soft on my 2018 model, so if you can adjust it so that it becomes stiffer on the more recent model it could make a big difference.
Well it can be quite well, but enduro driving is not a natural svartpillen territory and from my observations it has some issues: svartpillen has too small wheel turn for off-road driving, has not enough chain protection from dirt, sand ect and simply feels... "heavy" during a drive. Not to mention that it's gearbox is not suitable for off-road and you have to constanly shiftt beetween 1 and 2 gear and it is hard to find optimum setting. From time to time sure, but for constant off-road driving it is better to simply buy a different bike
Would this sort of terrain generally be considered the limits of the bike? Thx.
Great video, I'd be interested in seeing a video where you show and talk about the modifications you made to your bike and how you mount luggage. I recently bought Svartpilen 250 since that's the only option available in my country and so far absolutely loving it minus the annoying vibrations on the handle, hope that goes away after the first service.
Thanks, I didn't do any modifications to the bike except for the tail tidy. I also swapped the stock mirrors with some bar end ones. About the vibrations in the handlebar, try to put some weights in the bar, it should reduce vibrations. On the 401 I don't find vibrations to be an issue. Concerning the luggage, it's a simple saddle bag set up, and a tank bag from Kappa. They work really fine together.
@@nicolasp3696 Thanks for the insights. :) Cheers.
Very Nice Bike
Great video mate.
Got a svartpilen 401 2020 for my self this week, but the front wheel wobbels a bit and it effects the conforte of the handel bare. Do any one know how to fix this problem?
At high speed ? If it's only at high speed, try to loosen your grip on the handlebar and it will disappear. If it's a low speed you should have the balance of the wheel checked by a professional. It's possible some counter weights fell of. Also make sure the rim is properly trued and not bent.
Vero nice video
Grazie !
This looks like somewhere in Colorado U.S.A. Do you have Rattlesnakes up there?
Are you camping along the way?
I'd love to ride through the colorado rockies some day ! no rattle snakes up here, only vipers but they are generally hiding. This is also an area where you might see wolves from a long distance, as they roam around these mountains. I saw a bearded vulture that day. Wildlife isn't in any ways a serious concern when camping close to the trails here, which I was indeed doing.
awesome!
I'd like a weekend fun bike for occasional offroad. I was looking at Svartpilen or KTM 390 Adventure. The more I think of it, it seems to me that the only difference between Svartpilen and KTM is the appearance, otherwise it's an identical motorcycle. The KTM might have some 2cm more ground clearance and you can buy a metal skid plate. But I like the Svartpilen appearance much more, to be honest. So I am thinking whether it's really much different to buy KTM, or the offroading is nearly identical. What do you folks think?
The Svart will handle the occasional off road with no problems, but the ktm adventure is definitely more capable in that field. Longer front and rear travel and 5 cm more ground clearance (200mm vs 145mm) make for a bike that is capable of riding off road at a much faster pace. The stock tyres on the ktm are also more dirt oriented, and you'll find more grip while cornering, especially at the front. I like riding my Svartpilen off road but the low ground clearance and soft front suspension force me to slow down every time there are too many pot holes, or bigger rocks. The biggest difference is really how fast you'll be able to ride. If you like the looks of the Svart and don't mind riding with caution off road, go for it.
@@nicolasp3696 that's the thing - I love the looks of Svartpilen more than any other bike in the market. Not a massive fan of the KTM's sporty look. So I need to make up my mind how much offroad I am realistically going to do. Going offroad is actually forbidden in my country, and I have no experience anyway. It's just something I feel like trying.
@@pepa007 in that case you should definitely go for the Svartpilen. If riding off road eventually really grows on you you'll still be able to buy another bike later. The Svartpilen is plenty capable enough for an off road initiation
@@nicolasp3696 hi friend, go for the svart, here in Ecuador in the Andes the svart go very mi very good off roading.
How do manage to travel so far with the small fuel tank? Are you carrying extra fuel?
The bike has a roughly 300 km range with a full tank, so I just plan ahead and make sure I'll find a gas station within that range. In France you would be really unlucky not to find one.
Hows the suspension on it? Are bottoming out often? Or is it pretty smooth on these types of trails? Many thanks :)
The front suspension on the 2018 model isn't adjustable, and too soft in my opinion, at least for someone my weight (around 90 kilos), so yes it will bottom out if you hit a pothole or similar, since it's travel is quite short. To avoid bottoming out you have to anticipate your trajectory and shift your weight on the bike quite often. Riding on gravel roads, chances of bottoming out are quite low, but as soon as you hit rougher terrain, you have to ride with care, and reduce your speed. On the newer models (2020 etc) I believe you can adjust the front suspension and maybe tone it to a slightly firmer setup.
Great riding! Thanks for the video. I just picked up a 2022 and look forward to riding similar terrain. Do you still have the bike? Has this type of riding caused any issues with the bike? And do you think its handling well over small ravines and jumps etc..?
Hey, what Tank bag are you using? I have been looking for one for a while now
Hi, it's this one here : www.kappamoto.com/Bagagerie-souple/Reservoirs/RA315
How do you not get a flat tire doing that?!
The Pirelli Scorpio STR are off road oriented tyres. Both the Norden 901 and the Tenere 700 are fitted with these tyres out of the factory, so it's safe to say they are designed to handle this type of terrain.
Salut Nicolas,
A 300% oui, bien sûr.

Can you off road the 701 Svartpilen?
I've read about some 701 owners who ride their Svarts off road, but haven't seen any proof of it yet ;)
Will you recommend me going for it's brother that's the 250cc?
Depending on where you ride and your budget, I would rather advise you to get the 401. In any case the 250 is a great bike, very light and nimble, just less adapted for highway use and longer rides. Fuel consumption is very low too, so quite economic.
Great vid!
I have the same bike! Could you please show me how to turn ABS off?
Also, do you have any modifications? Like skid plate or something?
Thanks ! To switch the ABS off, put the ignition on but don't start the engine, press and hold the "mode" and the unmarked (bottom) button at the same time. You'll see a "keep pressed" notification appearing on the dashboard and after a few seconds you'll be notified that the ABS has been turned off. And no, I didn't do any modifications to the bike to ride off orad, just removed the DB killer in the muffler.
@@nicolasp3696 thank you very much Nicolas!! 🤙🏽
awesome
Have u done any modifications for ground clearance ? Please let me know
Hello, no this a 2019 model (401), with the euro4 complying exhaust system, which runs upwards, so enough ground clearance.
Hi. Whit 10000 k. Any. Details??? Thanks
My bike still running problem free. Just had a change of rear tyre around 8000 kms. Mine is from 2018, still produced in Austria, so I can't say about the reliability of the more recent units produced in India.
@@nicolasp3696 my bike is also in Austria and noe i have 14465km and i havent one problem all good like new.
Nicolas , how does it feel off road?
Hi Bogdan, it feels great. The front suspension, although working well on small bumps and high speed compressions is a bit too soft so you'll bottom out if you put too much weight on the front end. The rear Scorpion tyre has good traction and will get you anywhere as long as it's not too muddy. The front tyre is very decent, but it doesn't have the lateral grip of a proper agressive off-road tyre obviously, so you have to slow down a bit when cornering on loose terrain. All in all it's a very capable bike off road as long as you don't expect it to handle like a proper trail bike that has double it's suspension travel and higher ground clearance. So I would say that it's off road abilities are really great for a bike that was designed to ride primarily on the streets and is so fun at doing exactly that. Also the ABS can be turned off when riding off road which is a very useful feature. The 2020 models have an adjustable front suspension, so I guess you can make it stiffer if need be.
@@nicolasp3696 Nicolas , Thank you for your opinion ,for reviw !
