      ...Corvair. What about the Corvair? Sure, it was rear-mounted, but the engine was still behind the driver...and of course, it was unsafe, at any speed, so they moved the engine more forward in the Fiero. It too was unsafe at any speed could just catch on fire, even at zero mph.

    Listening to this, its interesting to hear that we may have finally reached peak performance where going faster/quicker is no longer a benefit and just a hindrance. I know people mentioned it with the hellcat but more and more it'll be interesting how the upper end competes when performance gains are no longer enjoyable outside of a track.

    • @acchaladka
      @acchaladka 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think it’s because of EVs, once that much instant speed is available in a nice yet normal consumer car, what the hell is the point of faster? Yet my Model 3 does not turn corners better than most, so let’s natter about that, ya?

    • @andoletube
      @andoletube 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Pretty much. Acceleration used to be something to experience in terms of having a beginning, a middle and an end. Now it's becoming an instantaneous thing and you have to get off the throttle only moments after you started moving. I do think it's less engaging than it used to be, even though the power is impressive in its own way. Electric cars will only worsen this trend with their insane torque.

    • @MumrikDK

    COMPLETELY agree with your Taycan take. This Fall I did a "homage" video where I compared "the pinnacle of internal combustion versus the "pinnacle" of EV. I drove the Taycan Turbo first and then got behind the wheel of a Mercedes-AMG GTR Roadster and I had the sme thoughts. The Porsche is shockingly quick, somehow super balanced, but there wasn't any theater. Especially jumping in a roofless AMG and hearing the symphony fall out the back, there's no chance for the Porsche to leave as big an impression. In any case, keep up the excellent work gents - nice to get a little "behind the scenes" look with the Extra channel

    You guys are spot on about Chevy service.
    I had C7 Z06 manual and I got rid of it after 3 years because the service department screwed up the car and I had no confidence in future service.
    I considered having it serviced by aftermarket shops, but after thinking about it, I just decided to get rid of it.
    That would be my only reservation in considering the C8 Z06 coming out.
    You're taking essentially a supercar and it's getting serviced by some guy that may have attended seminars on the Vette once and mostly fixes other Chevy's.
    Reputable/experienced Chevy dealer that I would trust is over an hour away, and that would be a pain in the ass.
    Despite how great the C8 is, and the upcoming Z06 will be, I would most likely not be getting one...

    Understeer is still "safer" though. It's easier to design for, and protect against, an impact from the front. More room for crumple zones, and it's a nice, easy to predict direction for airbags to protect you.
    Oversteer is a crapshoot. Maybe it's a side impact, maybe it's a rear, maybe it's at a corner. Door impacts are particularly bad; if it's the door the occupant is in, there's only a few inches between the person and the skin of the car. If it's the other side, they get forced over the center console; very easy to suffer internal decapitations or spinal cord injuries.

    I just bought a Kona Luxury and I'm making it Car of the Year. The runner up is my K20C2 6MT Civic. If i had more then 2 cars, there would be a third place finisher. If no snap oversteer, a front-drive can be driven harder around the track vs a setup that wants to rotate on its own. Side effect is that you can go full throttle on the front-drive, in the transitions and don't have to worry about losing the rear end since it's not doing the driving. I'd never pick an electric car, since the only people championing those cars are the one that don't know how to drive.

You guys are awesome and I have immense respect for your opinions and informed commentary. Without wanting to sound whiney, I would really also like to make a request. That request would be to ask that you guys not let respected automakers off the hook when they make obvious blunders. You guys are so nice at times when these long established manufacturers fail miserably and it's beneath you, as demonstrated so well in this video. Specifically Porsche. I would like to preface my next statement by admitting that I have been a Porsche fanboy since I was a child and probably will remain as such for the remainder of my days and now to the point. A turbo is a turbo. This is beyond a misnomer. Why? This ridiculous label for a non-turbo vehicle (whose name could have been anything) by one of the most reputable performance brands in the business is inexcusable.

    Love the concept here. Dislike the understeering C8 unless you have stock in Michelin. Track alignment isn't a solution if it creates other issues. Especially when said alignment costs $400-$600 dollars one way (each time)to have it done properly.

    • @ThrottleHouse
      @ThrottleHouse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The C8 won in spite of its issues. Because underneath the teething problems it’s a brilliant car and a great platform thats really fun to drive. The reality is, in order to maximize performance fun in MOST cars you need an aftermarket alignment. In fact I don’t know a soul that regularly tracks or competes with a street car that doesn’t have one. Is that an excuse? No. And we came down hard on the car and GM for it. But despite the problems it’s still a really really great vehicle for the money. -Thomas

      @@ThrottleHouse no mention of the model Y. It checks almost every box that you stated in the intro and not even a runner up? Tops for technology, disrupting, performance, Game changer. Can't remember all the other things you mentioned but it was the first to come to mind as you were rattling off your list of criteria

    I’m so glad the Shelby made it in there, the gt500 is easily my favorite car and my dream car and I am so glad it made this list, not only do I live the sound, the power, but the look is what does it for me, it looks so beautiful and it really gives off that angry look that you think of when you hear a really loud mustang. I love the mustang and I glad it made it

    Thomas: We’re in a basement you can’t say stuff like that
    I laughed too hard at that

      I posted a superchat on TST podcast a while ago requesting the throttle house dudes. Farah hadn’t heard of them, Klapman made positive comments about them. Perhaps they will be on the show soon!

    My criteria for Car Of The Year. A Trackable car, super fast dual clutch, unexpected 0-60 time and.... oh, it needs to have room inside for my bike. So can’t make the same choice no matter how much i like yours. The older I get the more things I need my car of he year to do. I reckon in 15 years the top priority will be “easy to get in and out of” :)

    Love your show so darn much! Just two pals doing a show about cars and being funny and interesting while doing so, getting serious old top gear vibes over here... sadly in their new show the old trio seems to have forgotten that it was supposed to be about cars in the first place and not (only) about being silly and bickering and driving a caterham through madagaskar. Keep up the awesome work. Also love your sincerity.
