This video was rushed to publishing as I had a little free time to finish it up today, I hope it turned out ok, in future videos I will explain more about why I am quoting Vincent Van Gogh. I have lots of photographs and video footage still to turn into videos, I will try to make them as soon as I can. In this video, I added camera settings clipped from Photoshop to include the histogram for any beginners out there that are interested, they also show which lens was used, when you see no lens described that will be the Sol 45, it is a manual focus lens. I know the settings go by too quickly but maybe you can just pause the video for them if you’re interested. Thanks everyone! I hope you're all doing great!
Well Leisl spring will be forthcoming. Seeing your video, and others that you do are so inspirational. You just bring that sense of calmness in showing us wonderfully the measure of God’s creation as captured in your photography. I have done some photography like yours and would like to share a few with you if it were possible. I am now 80 years of age and have sold my Canon and Sigma gear as carrying weight was becoming an issue. Now I rely on my Panasonic FZ1000 MK 1 and whilst it is not as good as the Sony RX10 MK4 it is amazing what shots can be had by keeping to a fixed length focus and using Intelligent AF. I also have an I phone 13 pro max which will be of good use as well this year. Thanks again for your videos. Keep them coming. David
Beautiful images. I especially love the cherry blossoms. I really enjoy photographing flowers and am starting to get into macro - need lots of practice. Look forward to more of your video's.

Hi, Liesl. It is very pleasant and relaxing to listen to your sweet voice and see your pretty photos. Greetings from Basque Country.
Beautiful photos as usual Liesl. Through your videos I became interested in Macro flower photography and it has become my favourite subject. I'm very much looking forward to seeing your future projects.
Thank you, Marrianne! It's so wonderful to be able to connect with others here that enjoy the same kind of photography. I had a lovely day out today with my camera, I do hope to be able to make some more videos soon, just a couple more weeks to go with my art classes and then I am free! :)
Thank you Liesl. I enjoy coming on your photos walks and see the beautiful images that you make. I've been working on my macro photography over the past two years and your videos are such inspiration.
I'm so glad you are enjoying your photography and thank you so much for joining me here on these recorded photo walks, I always think about trying to make videos that I would enjoy watching myself, so it makes me happy to know that others are enjoying them too, thank you!
The Queen of floral macro has done it again. A lovely video Liesl. I wasn't too impressed with the lens baby, it didn't appear to make the subject stand out like your macro photos which are so stunning.
Hi John! I agree about the lensbaby, I may very well be selling it at some point, I feel like I can get better quality shots with my other lenses. Honestly though, overall, I have not been impressed with any of my photography over the last year, something is off. I hope I can figure this out and get back on track soon. How are you doing? I hope all is well out there where you are.
@@LieslHuddleston I hate buying something and being dissapointed. I think your videos are still excellent as are your photos. Your usual style is to have a close up photo of a flower with lots of complimentary negative space. For example the photo at 2 mins is first class. I think where your photos perhaps suffer is when there is more in focus or the background is distracting. However I think that was mostly the new lens you were using. Don't put too much pressure on yourself, your photos are some of the best I've seen. Just take a step back, use the macro and telephoto lens and just enjoy yourself. That's when we see you shine. It's been a tough few years so take some time to relax and immerse yourself in nature and only take the photos when you don't feel you have to.
Your video is beautiful as always, and I enjoy the quotes. My photographic journey; over the winter it slowed, I felt trapped with the cold and my creativity at an all-time low. At the urging of a friend I decided to establish myself photographically on Instagram and that along with Spring seems to have propelled me into a wave of creativity. I'm taking more time to study for compostion when I'm out in the forest and that has brought such joy and improvement. Thanks for asking the question and for your wonderful insights. :)
Hi Liesl, it’s always great to see your video and photos again. It is inspiring and there’s always room for me to improve my photography while watching yours! Happy Spring to everyone! 🌷💕
Thank you so much, Joyce! I'm excited to spend the day out with my camera tomorrow and the weather should be perfect! Thanks for the lovely comments, you always make me smile!
Lovely words from Vincent Van Gogh Liesl, your presentation and videos always so relaxing to watch and your images are so beautifully crafted. I’ve heard about the Lensbaby being very difficult to use at first but hopefully you will get used to it as time goes on 🙂 I will look forward to hearing more about your drawing and painting in the future, it sounds very exciting.🙂 Cheers, Cliff
Cliff! I am so far behind on answering everyone here, goodness, my apologies! Thank you so much for making a comment here, I have missed seeing you and often think of how you are doing :) I just created a new channel tonight for my drawing and painting adventures, but I have no content yet, as soon as I do I'll let you know.
Hi Liesl...really enjoyed this relaxing video. So excited for you and your new adventure! I hope you will share some of your drawings in future vlogs. Would really love to see them! Be well!
Hi Liesl, really love your videos and flower photography. I have been developing my garden in readiness for capturing my own home grown blooms during these last islolation times. I purchased a Lensbaby Velvet 85 last year and love it. Keep the inspiration coming! Cheers
Jenny, I wish I was better with gardening, we did plant some tulips and irises for spring this year, but now that they have finished blooming the flower beds are looking pitiful again. I hope your gardening adventure is going well and that you get lots of enjoyment out of it when everything is flowering :) I've heard the Velvet 85 is a beautiful lens and I've seen some lovely photos made with it, I'm sure you're having a lot of fun using it!
Interesting to hear you creative journey, with the sketching, etc. I think working with different media enhance our engagement with the subject. I too have been influenced by Van Gogh, his letters to his brother reveal his abilities with words. I love that he toiled away with little external reward, the quest to create beauty his main driver. My favourite images here are the white blossoms towards the end. Gorgeous. I’ll have to watch some of your other videos to see the filters you refer to…
I think you're right, Richard, since a good composition will make or break just about any photo or artwork. Yes, it is a treasure that we are able to read those Van Gogh letters, such a fascinating character he was. I recently got to see an incredible body of work by Van Gogh at the Dallas Museum of Art and then more of his paintings in Houston. In my opinion, he was a genius in some respects and as you said, how hard working and prolific he was over such a short period of time but his passion through the struggle was honorable indeed. The filters used in this video are specifically for the Sol 45 lens, I can't say that I recommend them or the lens for that matter, I understand many people thoroughly enjoy the Lensbaby lenses, but I'm not quite sure that I like them that much yet.
@@LieslHuddleston Wow, I would love to see some Van Gogh work in person, that must have been quite something. I studied him for a book I was writing as a western example of an artist who understood wabi sabi (though I doubt he knew the term) and the local university library had a copy of his letters. I read many of them and felt a real affinity for the man. I've watched some recent documentaries that paint him in a very bad light, but like with some many people, and with art in general I guess, it depends what elements you focus on. I completely hear you regarding the lens baby lenses. I've looked at them often, but never bought one. There are certainly some photographers who put them to good effect. I've had this on again off again relationship with soft lenses, especially vintage ones. It is quite the journey to find the lenses that help us achieve our vision.
@@stillinthestream I’m so glad we decided to go see the exhibit of his work, they only showed it in Dallas and then the paintings and drawings went to Amsterdam, when that show is over they will go back to their respective museums never to be exhibited as a group again. They say that the paintings have become too fragile to transport anymore and will likely never be brought together as a group ever again. I know many museums across the country have individual paintings but I can’t believe our luck that we got to see what we did. One painting in particular - the very last one at the end of the gallery was particularly striking to me. I was sitting there staring at it for about an hour while I waited for my family to finish looking through the exhibit (we’re all a bunch of artists LOL) that painting is now seared into my memory, I saw things in it that only a genius painter and architect of the principles of art could actually achieve. It’s hard to explain but I hope to some day explain it in a video for anyone that would be interested. It makes me really sad when I think about how tortured he was with his mental health and if only more people could have understood what a miracle his talent was. I also think it’s sad that some documentaries and books paint him in a bad light, when you read his letters, like you have, you see many sides of him, including that he was a good person in many respects. Before we went to the exhibit, we watched the movie, “At Eternity’s Gate” and now it’s on my list of favorite movies, I loved it for lots of reasons, but it also helped me to appreciate seeing his work in person even more. Ha! I could talk about this for hours, it’s nice to chat with someone who ‘gets it!’ :)
@@LieslHuddleston I absolutely loved that story of sitting and looking at the final painting. I’ve had little opportunity to visit art galleries and museums but I think I would be like that. Hopefully in retirement we will be able to travel to some. I’ve bookmarked that movie to watch tonight. Have you seen the Dr. Who episode about bringing Vincent to a modern day museum to listen in on a tour guide saying he was the greatest painter of all time? The full episode is worth watching but here is the key scene th-cam.com/video/ubTJI_UphPk/w-d-xo.html I’ve always thought it so unfair that he didn’t receive recognition in his lifetime… anyway, I would be keen to see more from you on him and what his influence has been on your art.
When the lighting is harsh I like to look for areas where the bright light breaks through the dense cover. Backlit flowers are also nice. I like how the petals light up.
Great tip, David! It's been crazy for me all spring, every day that I can go outdoors is a cloudless day. I'm very exited to have a chance to go out tomorrow, lots of clouds and potentially some rain! Yay! Thank you for the comment, I hope you're enjoying some good days out there too :)
@@davejsullivan Oh dear, ha! Well, can we swap? :) You get to have spring time a little longer than we do. Another great video. I especially like that you’ve included info on camera settings, in particular when using your 400 mm lens. I’m trying to use mine in attempting macro photography, learning what I can along the way. Thru your videos I’ve learned I can indeed do macro work with my 400 mm lens. In the photos you’ve shown, have you used a tripod with the telephoto lens?
I'm glad you are also enjoying your lens at 400mm. I seem to gravitate towards that lens more and more now too. I do not use a tripod, everything is handheld. I actually removed the tripod collar to make it easier for me to support the lens with my left hand while I use my right for settings and to push the shutter button. I find the lens to be sharp and accurate so I don't seem to have much trouble shooting handheld, but I have heard that it is difficult for some because the lens is quite heavy.
I think the Lensbaby Velvet 85 would have been a better lens for you, Liesl. The Sol 45 kinda does what you already do so very well with your 'normal' lenses and post-production skills.
It would have been, I agree Alex! I do not like the Sol 45 at all, have not played with it much since this, my other lenses are definitely better at creating the same images.
I basically don't know which direction to go. I have to do something creative always and so im getting into photography. I find that photographing helps me cherish the little things i have, like my garden. I can invest atleast in a macro lens for my smartphone. I don't have the budget for a dslr or the lens. Lensbaby is a distant dream but for now i enjoy shooting with what i have.
