Shouldn't the emotional opposites be angry-tender and excited-scared? That just seems more accurately polar. Anger and excitement are not exclusive however I would say that you cannot be angry(destructive) while being tender(supportive).
what he should have done, was just have 2 variables instead of 6.... one for activation level and one for pleasantness they should range between -1 and +1 THEN he could map out on that 2d grid where the emotions lie.... and if the bot moves into a region where a certain emotion is triggered then it changes his AI.if he was using a PI he could make the emotion math simple by making a bitmap image and assigning color to the different emotions, and just doing a pixel color look up on the image based on the values in the robot
This is amazing, maybe activating diffrent memories (like saying: you remember when you failed against the avengers?) could activate different emotions, making him angry/sad in this example.
It would look better if the blue light in the head faded out (at the same time the head is moving back to its home position), instead of just turning off & the instant "on" should stay as it is, witch makes it look more "alive". Another thing that tough of is the mood light changing in the brain is a little bit hard notice, blue & green might work better. Except from that, the project is really interesting & fun! great work so far. :)

For the secondary emotions, sad, angry, and scared, I would reverse the order of the light strips. If they acted more like bar graphs going up and down, it would at least help me understand what acted as an "activated" light and an "empty" light. Also, perhaps for the videos, I would turn down the brightness of the LEDs because they are already so close to bright white it can be hard to distinguish the colors. Otherwise, I love how ambitious this project is with the AI sections (although I do miss some of the animatronics assembly on the body).

For the memory you could have a decimal increase i.e. when you make him happy the 1*y(decimal) and having a build up for remembered actions and if you push it around the decimal could increase from 1*.3 to like 1*.5 im not sure if i explained this well but as you build one side the other side decreases but doesn't decay over time
Hello James. You should have 3 variables internally instead of 6 to avoid desync, since "sad = 1 - happy" and so on. I recommend implementing getters like getHap() { return hap; } and getSad() { return 1 - hap; }. Or maybe 6 instead of 1 in your case. This way you won't have to change much code if you decide to change this logic in the future.

True but you could use the sliders to represent the percentage plus you can see the sliders position without looking at the serial output and you can also make ultra move the sliders in response and giving another visual representation of his emotions. That being said I love this project!!!

if a random burglar broke into James house and come up against this robot in a darkened attic, just a few dull LEDs maybe two red ones in his eyes,,,even if it was 3 stories up,i think most burglars would chance a 3 story jump straight out the window, as that head movement,with "what are you doing?' in the dark would be horrifying,am i right?especially if he was stoned,drunk,or tripping,even worse all three

I feel like a more expressieve face is very important for a social robot like Ultron. As it is he has completely static eyes and a bit of jaw flap which doesn't give it a lot of personality.
ever considered making his voice sound angry when he's angry? and if you get him to recognize voice commands.... maybe get him to mock people by recording what he hears and then parroting them back in a squeaky voice? just a thought.
Are you afraid of running out of grunt or serial speed? It feels like Propeller with 8 cores at I think 50 or 80Mhz would kill a lot of the delay. I got one long ago but never started to figure out how to use it so I can understand not wanting to learn all that but even something like Teensy still uses Arduino and would seem to give a big boost in speed.
