I'm the only naturally skinny one in my family and the secret definitely is the first thing you mentioned. I listen to my body. If I have had pizza the day before, my body will usually crave something light for my next meal, when I'm full I will stop eating. I'll usually crave whole foods such as strawberries, cabbage or fish, not for example a dish such as lasagna. Excellent video, I recognize everything you just said and it wasn't taught to me, I have always done these things.

@@sa1he1a2 I will be kind of put off by the food when I've had enough, it won't be as enticing, I'm just satisfied and that feeling will come immediately not way later like for so many. The rest of my family will overeat and then feel sick way later. As a kid my siblings would ask me for the rest of my dessert or candy when I didn't feel like eating any more, then they'd feel sick for eating too much.

Easily as I don't want to feel full, bloated and sluggish if I over eat so stopping when I'm full is better than over eating. It's second nature to us. We don't really have an urge to keep eating once full so don't think about it.

Don't think too much about it - so true! Many diets have you focusing all day on planning meals, buying specific ingredients, counting calories or points, preparing certain dishes, planning the next meal or snack, etc. No wonder people are overweight they spend all day thinking about food!

I had a weird experience one summer when I was a teenager and for whatever reason, I stopped thinking about my body and dieting. I think we were on vacation and I was just having fun. In three days, I lost a noticeable amount of weight and I was shocked. I think I hadn't been hungry for dinner for three days so I just didn't eat...I had other fun things to do anyway. Later on in my late twenties, I finally remembered that experience. And as soon as I stopped weighing myself, stopped counting calories, and stopped restricting foods, my eating and my weight normalized. I also shifted to reminding myself that my favorite foods will be available to me when I actually crave them, and I don't have to eat it all right now. I also trust myself that if I eat a bigger meal or some treat foods, it's not going to become a daily habit. And I always say if you are hydrating properly, doing moderate exercise, and getting enough sleep, you can trust your hunger, craving, and fullness cues.

This is relatable. I've struggled with this for most of my life. I have recently realized that anytime I was at a comfortable weight where I wasn't hyperfocusing on diet, body image and weight, I would just naturally eat less, enjoy myself more, have more energy, and my body would lose weight effortlessly.

My problem is the mindset of food insecurity, oh when will I have this again? Growing up my mom was an almond mom and we didn’t have any snacks, only nuts, bananas and raisins. So as a kid whenever I went to birthday parties for example I would overindulge because I didn’t have snacks, Chips, soda, sweets…. I’m trying hard to get rid of this now that I’m an adult and can buy things myself. It’s still influencing me I just recently realized.

I’m a naturally thin person. A growling stomach isn’t a bad thing. For me, it doesn’t necessarily mean I need a full blown meal. If I feel like I’m getting hungry during a non-normal meal time, I’ll drink some water and try to go for a quick walk if I can, or at least get up and go do something like the laundry. Then I’ll reassess. If I’m still hungry, I’ll eat a snack. But it won’t be empty calories like chips (I don’t even like chips most of the time). Something like a banana or an apple with peanut butter. Processed food doesn’t stick around. You’ll be hungry again in 10 minutes after finishing the entire bag. It’s wasted food since it’s not getting the job done. But I used to confuse a growling stomach with hunger, but sometimes it’s actually a thirst cue.

I've literally been the same weight since I was 15. 120 lbs, no diet, no exercise (I need to anyways for being healthy, not skinny) and I've never understood why fasting is so difficult for some, as well as listening to what your body truly craves for nutrition, not taste.
I guess I just felt like crap every time I over ate, or ate the wrong things my body did not need. And I just adapted.
It's just listening to your body and it's needs, not what society is pushing down your throat.
Most fast foods and restaurants are crap now anyways due to low cost budgeting and poor ingredients. Just.. think about what you put into your body, and love yourself enough to care about that. You literally cannot escape yourself, so you might as well love and take care of you. Your body is truly a temple

Most focus was on filling up your stomach so you can sleep instead of nutrition. My dad did try though! Whenever he got the chance, he would be making great home cooked healthy food! I remember inhaling my food growing up. I always felt like I was hungry.

I was naturally skinny my entire life until menopause. I did a lot of what you mentioned and it worked pre-menopause. I ranged from 100-130 through the decades depending on pregnancy etc. Menopause quickly and effortlessly landed me at 180. My doctor informed me that lowered estrogen will drastically change your metabolism. So all that worked for decades wasn't enough anymore. I used to just eat and enjoy it. Never counted calories or obsessed over how much I worked out etc. "Naturally" skinny for me came down to genetics. My metabolism was high. That was the secret. As soon as my metabolism tanked, every bite and movement counted.

For me it's the social pressure that works. As an Asian I can easily fit the category of "naturally skinny (or at least fit)" standard of people from other continents if I eat when hungry and stop when full, but I definitely need to think about meal planning and counting calories if I want to be "fashionably aesthetic pleasing" if you know what I mean...But I never talk about anything like diets or restrictions in front of other people. Just because we seem to be "naturally skinny" doesn't mean that we are not conscious. There was a time I completely binged when I was studying in the US and gained like 30 lbs. Never talked about it with everyone except people from my high school would know about it.

Ok I'll be a little dramatic but I think that finally something clicked in my head.
About a year ago I've lost about 15kg while starving myself and I've gained all of it back. I remember crying so hard thinking I'll have to do it all over again. I tried so much and I actually lost some weight but I simply can't do it, honestly I just feel better mentally so I can't torture myself like that. I'm really anxious about letting go of my restrictive mindset because I really hate my body at higher weight and I can already it's soo much while being restrictive. As you can guess I'm in binge-restriction cycle.
When I was listening to you I've realized that I really was like that, I was naturally skinny person and I ruined all of it. I've created a hell for myself and I didn't see any way to escape from it.
I finally realized that I don't need to be harder on myself, in opposite I need to think about it less and listen to my body. The most important thing for me was food abundance point - when I was younger I didn't think at all about it and now I have a rule that I refuse to eat when someone's home or when I'm outside unless they make me do it. That created daily binges whatever someone leaves me alone or the second I get home.
I'll try to take a different approach, I should probably also consider professional help. Thank you and sorry for a rant lmao

I wouldn't consider myself skinny by modern standards, but the one thing I realised might be helpful is to determine your "weight fluctuation window". So my weight can fluctuate between 60 and 65 kg. It will be extremely difficult for me to go beneath 60 kg without extreme physical activity and restraining my diet. and it will be equally unlikely to go over 65 kg, unless I stop movement at all and eat mostly trash. So I operate within this window and don't worry if I get +-1-2 kg. Another thing I found important (and this was from my parents) is to never see food as either a reward or a punishment. I was never forced to eat when I didn't want to and never denied food if I wanted a second helping. Treats were very occasional because we never had any "junk food" at home. And McDonals was a celebration 1-2 times per year, usually after some successful exams/performances

This is so true. I’m naturally lean and have always found it counterintuitive to overthink food in order to lose weight. It just creates stress around the whole situation and I think gets in the way of peoples’ hunger signals. I don’t overthink my food yet I still manage to eat balanced and maintain my weight. Sometimes I eat junk food, and don’t worry about it, but most of the time my body craves more light food that makes me feel really good. If I had to give anyone a piece of advice, it would be to focus on tapping into your body and it’s signals rather than thinking and planning too much

Most of my life I've had the good fortune to eat pretty freely and stay thin. However, my metabolism has slowed down with age and now I do have to watch my eating habits more. That means learning new habits at an older age, and this is where i found your video so helpful. Moreover I listen to my body and, apart from slight deviations now and then, find that my appetite has become naturally smaller.
Thank you so much, your tips are excellent!

I’m a thin girl and always have been. I agree that you shouldn’t eat if you’re not hungry, but for me, when I do eat, I eat everything in my plate so that I don’t snack in between meals. That not only can cause weight gain, but it increases glucose levels.

I have a history of being an emotional eater and because of this I think I taught my myself to use food for fulfillment. What you said about enjoying food in the moment and then getting most of my fulfillment from other activities really made me realize I have been abusing food. I am the furthest thing from naturally skinny lol, but I agree that not obsessing over food is definitely part of the key to success when it comes to weight. You also have to learn to be super patient with yourself. I have lost so much weight so many times and gained it all back. Whereas I've now been steadily and slowly losing weight over the past 5-ish years. I haven't gained any of it back, but it's been very slow. I am not going to try to force myself to speed it up though, because every time in the past that I have, it's ended in failure.

Completely agree! I'm 21 and I have stayed naturally thin through my whole life mostly by just listening to my body, I hate the feeling of being overly full so I avoid it like the plague, people around me sometimes look at me in a weird way because I leave half-eaten a lot of my meals and then finish it later (usually as dinner which is also good because that means i'm eating smaller portions at night).
Not really thinking about the food i'm eating it's very important too, somedays I eat a lot when my body allows it, some other days I eat like a bird, and I don't skip meals like at all. Having a healthy diet is important but I think that it's more important to not go overboard with the amount of food you're eating, you can eat whatever you want so long as you are mindful of that principle in my eyes (ofc there's cases where certain foods can affect people more than others)

So I live in a very rural place in the western US and when I moved to a city for school one year, plus gone on vacations, I lost weight and I haven’t been able to understand why.
The abundance mindset really stands out to me here because when I wasn’t living with my family, I didn’t restrict myself from buying certain groceries or eating at certain restaurants. If one week I was craving rice crispy treats, I got them and then the next week I wouldn’t want them anymore.
On vacations, not only do I prioritize walking, but food really isn’t at the front of my mind until I’m hungry. I work from home and there’s not a lot to do in my town so I feel like I use food for coping with boredom.
The thing about diets making you think about food is so true. I’m a PCOS girlie and I don’t like to take bunch of medications (because they don’t actually address the cause) so all other research tells me to go gluten free and dairy free….which I understand but again, rural town. I don’t have those options. So then I’m worrying about how what’s available to me isnt sustainable for the lifestyle I’m being told to have, and it’s an endless cycle of thinking about food!
I think those of us raised in poorer households just haven’t learned better mindsets with food, so we end up with guilt associated with certain foods even when they provide pleasure. Thank you for making this video! Even though I can’t relate to being naturally thin, hearing a different perspective is really helpful to understand what areas I can improve :)

Before the age of 25, I was "naturally skinny". My number one behaviour was not thinking about food much. Sometimes I would forget to eat a meal. Sometimes I would be hungry but I wouldn't actually go and get something to eat. Number two would be not "loving food". Lunch might be two apples, or a couple of slices of plain toast. Simple food.

I fast daily (eating between 12-7) and I am considered ‘underweight’ according to the medical community standards. Yet I get my food intake during my eating window. I eat plentiful calories in my eating window although they are from all nutritional whole foods. I consume both organic grass fed meats as well as organic veggies/fruits, various nuts and legumes. I do NOT eat sugar whatsoever. Get my daily water intake. Walk 4 miles a day. And include multiple vitamin and herb supplements. Once I implemented these things in my life I have never felt more better, more energetic and I sleep extremely well at night now. If it has improved my overall well-in a positive way, you can’t convince me otherwise. My energy during the day is incredible ❤
      No, I am not diabetic.
Aren’t people who are overweight warned by the medical community to loose weight to avoid becoming diabetic?

Excellent video. I am in my 50s. I'm not thin, but certainly thinner than many. I've been as low as 11 pounds and as high as 134 pounds. Throughout my 40s and 50s, I have mostly maintained between 118 and 122, occasionally hopping up to 125. Your mother is spot on -- it just isn't worth thinking about all that much. When you're eating, enjoy it. When you're not eating, it's not something to think about. I love food, I love to cook, and I enjoy eating immensely. But when I'm not eating, it's not remotely on my mind. I rarely eat highly processed food, and enjoy flavor and savoring more than quantity. All your tips were spot-on and great information for people who want to learn a different and more casual and healthy relationship with food and eating.

I've never been overweight, but I've struggled to feel hunger or thirst and I struggle with sensing satiety. It is very difficult for someone who has been physically abused sometimes, to get there. You just lack physical self-awareness of your body in space. Yoga helped me. EMDR helped me. Biofeedback helped! Keep moving towards the goals in this video. This is the healthiest mindset you can have.

This is the only video you need to watch for this topic. You literally described everything I did growing up which I forgot about or did unconsciously (I could have been naturally skinny because of the fact I was still growing as a male teenager though). One of the main things is portions; don’t go wild & stop eating if u feel full. I would always have cereal in the mornings, then a sandwich at school which I ate half of at break time because my stomach would usually growl if I didn't, (but this wouldn’t happen at home for some reason so I would just have the whole sandwich or toast around 12 plus a banana or cookies if I was still hungry) then I had the other half at lunch plus a snack: I had an angel cake. Then, when I came home from school, I would either wait until dinner (which was really early: between 4-5) or if I couldn't help how hungry I was, I would have my go to snack: either a banana or coffee with bourbons. Coffee would always fill me up, so I had to make sure I didn't eat too many cookies or I wouldn't be able to finish the coffee. This would usually mean I was too full for dinner, so I would have it later or not eat much & have the rest later (we eat dinner as a family together). I would always stop eating dinner if I reached the point where I would feel full if I kept eating - I hated being bloated and the uncomfortable feeling. So, my family would usually have ice-cream after eating, but I don't like ice-cream that much, so I would always sit and watch them 😂 because I knew (if I didn't have a snack before dinner) that I would prefer to have my bourbons later when I felt like it.
This was a baseline from what I can remember, but if I was still hungry later in the evening, which I often was, I would have more bananas, leftovers from dinner, or whatever snacks we had at home. So I think the previous meals balanced with anything else I would eat. I would only really eat things that were worth it, I would only drink water and coffee with occasionally drinking a milkshake or something else, but that's also to do with me always hating fizzy drinks. I would also be able to eat unhealthily on random days like birthdays or just me being greedy, but not that often.
Some of this might be wrong or I could have missed some things, but this is what I can remember (I'm not leaning towards underweight anymore bc when I moved to uni and bought my own food, I started replacing my go to snacks with higher calorie snacks because I thought if I was going to eat something unhealthy, it might as well be something I really enjoy. But my portions got out of control, so now I'm cutting down to lose the fat I gained). I hope someone finds this useful, but remember not to take food too seriously and listen to ur body and eat when you're hungry or craving something.

I think in the US it's portion sizes and processed/ultra processed foods. I've been to Paris several times and noticed right away the bread there doesn't bother me. Plus no snacking. I notice the portions at meals are more modest. I was always satisfied, but not "Thanksgiving full" after every meal. Lastly, the US seems so much more prone to snacking all the time. In Paris I got the sense that snacking was not encouraged. FYI - cannot wait for my next opportunity to visit!!

It is also important to note that the food insecurity/scarcity mindset may come from a history of not always having readily available food. Especially when you're low-income, food is not always a given and it can be hard to unlearn that and not indulge when you get to a place where food is abundant. It is a psychological process in a big way, but I liked the way this video encouraged us to be hopeful and the start of something good for future generations.

They are under 25 and can eat anything they want. After about 25, I kept eating the same things and gaining approximately 1-2 kg per year. So hormones, older age, genetics, lots of factors. The basic is just eat food. Whatever does not grow in nature is not food. So fruits, veggies, eggs, and meat. That is it. Everything else is just not neccessary. Whatever is packages- has preservants. People who eat like this can even be underweight. Eat small meals frequently, and always feel a little hungry. Get comfortable with the feeling of empty stomach. Every time you feel like you are super full, you have overdone it.

I often get told, "you are so lucky you can eat whatever you want and still be thin". They have no idea that eating healthy and moving is part of my everyday life so when they see me eat 4 slices of pizza on Friday with Friends it's not the whole picture. I also get asked, "why can't you change up what you eat". Basically, I enjoy everything I eat so I figure don't fix something that is not broken. In your worlds, I Keep it simple.

A lot of people in the family have noticed that my uncle eats two large pork chops for dinner and pours fat on his potatoes. He just eats a lot for lunch. He never refuses a cake. But... my uncle doesn't eat between meals. He eats two large meals a day. He plays sports and has never had any problems with food like emotional eating. When he is full, he stops eating.
Ever since I was a child I have heard from family members "our uncle has a different metabolism and he is naturally slim". I believed them. Now I know that's not true. Uncle doesn't have any super powers. He just eats as much as he should. The obese people in the family eat too much, it's just spread out over several meals.

I always feel fine in the morning and eating makes me nauseous) and just what I want. If I "need" an entire burrata mozzarella and just that, I eat just that for lunch... In the evening I will feel my body asking my brain for salad and blueberries and some proteins or carbs. I don't like to cook, I love my food simple, fresh and raw, I dislike complicated things with lots of ingredients, blended flavours, lots of spices... but I need junk food like Nutella during my lutheal phase and I eat it without problems and I never gain weight. If they overdo it, they always just eat lighter later. As an obese person, I never learned correct portions as a child because my mom overfed us due to the food scarcity she experienced growing up. I learned to eat too much and thought I was hungry due to her coaxing. Thin people aren't obsessed with food and I'm always thinking about it. It sucks.

No one ever seems to mention this (probably TMI) but a fast GI tract is key. I have always been on the thin side and attribute it primarily to genes. I'm constantly obsessing about food and am emotional eater. Many may find this controversial but I weigh myself every morning. If I see an increase of a pound or two, I automatically cut back.

master the art fasting... skip breakfast for a week only eat lunch past 12 then once your body gets used to it and the hunger pains and headaches go away then move it back to 2-3pm have a big balanced meal once a day, fat just falls right off ...

I've striggled with my weight all my life and I didn't really prioritized the weight loss because I allways prioritized other things instead.
I eat a lot!!!! And i don't feel hunger when I'm going to eat. My life has been really stressful and we don't have much money so I allways cried myself to sleep at night because I started eating well and then I started eating compulsively out of nothing and it's been like that for years. My weight is 75kg and I am completely obcessed with losing weight because I feel like i'm the only fat girl in the world everytime that I see my body. Since now I'm going to try to feel hungry before I eat something, don't think to much about what i am eating because I dont usually go for junk food, i eat bread, meat, eggs, beans boiled in water and salt, but in the same quantity as three of my sister's lunches... my problem is really the quantity that I eat. My mom, sister and brother are really elegant and my father is like that now. I am the only fat at home and at the university and it kills me...
I will just start with eating only when i am hungry and let myself eat less times after i am full.

When I was back in Spain I was very thin and now I am living in uk and I am obese. I notice that in Spain most of my days I wasn’t hungry. I would have a tea for breakfast and then cycle to work and then lunch would always be something light. I craved sweets but the fruit was so good and even you got to have artisanal sweets. I was never hungry and of course there was so much more sports you could do, going to the beach, the mountain, having morning walks where amazing.in the uk everything is processed and veggies and fruit taste like water! There is nothing to do! So you end up going to restaurants and having take out because of boredom! I hate the gym but love swimming! Swimming pools here are crap and dirty! The weather is terrible and even going to the park on your own early I. The morning there is always some dodgy people it put me off to go on my own. I feel like socialising here is more about food and less about what to do!
Can’t wait to leave at this point and start living again because it’s also so depressing.

What a lovely talk. You really throw a lifeline to people who are struggling with an unhealthy lifestyle.
You don't judge or belittle them.
If I may add my penn'orth:
Skinny used to mean unhealthily thin/underweight.
    The proper word is thin.
I would say that I am one of the 'lucky'ones; I have always been a healthy, slim size.
    But here's the deal.
I walk almost everywhere that I go. I good steady walk of about 3mph.
I cook all of my own food from scratch.
I strength train in moderation, two or three times a week.
I don't put restrictions on treats like cake with my coffee or buying the odd chocolate bar.
I have never eaten a McDonalds, or drunk fizzy drinks. EVER, because I find the smell of them nauseating.
In short, I have cultivated good habits, passed on to me by my parents.
1 am 58, 5' 10", 147lbs. Those have been my stats since I was 18. I was a tad taller then but that is all.

Both my parents are petite people. My mother was blessed with a high metabolism and my father skips meals because he works a lot, so growing up we always ate full fat, real butter, whole milk products. My sister and I were not given the petite gene. One of the differences from when my parents grew up to how my sister and I grew up was that if my mom was too tired to cook she would eat out. Even when she would try to get healthy alternatives preservatives were in everything. So now if I want something then I make it myself that way I know what's in it.

💯 agreed!!! Thats why my mum is always skinny as well while I’ve become too British 😅 and I also think emotional management is super important for a lot of people, I over eat/drink when I’m stressed out 😰

I don’t think I could ever not obsess about food. I love food and I always will. I grew up in a family where food brought us together, we would plan our days around food, and trying new foods and making beautiful meals is something I find immense joy in. Right now I’m going through my journey of losing a little bit of weight. I’m happy with how I look but would like be a bit thinner. One thing that is helping me is balancing my glucose levels (The Glucose Goddess) !! And being more mindful of the time period I eat in. I would love to be an intuitive eater, but it’s definitely not something that comes naturally to me.

I definitely don’t have the feeling of abundance. People are are always stealing the food I save for later or overeating so there isn’t any for later. But I’ll work on it.

Also if you eat more whole foods you also crave whole foods when you are hungry.
I also noticed when I eat too much processed food I feel sick and stuffed so I tend to eat more lighter meals but a lot of that :)
I love love love tomatoes and mozzarella as well as cold apples from the fridge 🤤
I also really love hummus with carrots. Of course sometimes I crave pizza, noodles and bread. But usually I feel like Im in a food coma and it feels so bad like a brick in my stomach. So I try to reduce that :/
However I disagree with some points of the video.
    I think a lot about food. I am a real foodie 😅
I love planning everything I eat and am excited to eat something the next day.
I even go to restaurants alone :)
So for me it’s not about the social aspect.
But what is really important is to detach your emotions from food. Sugar is not therapy if you are sad. And many people confuse this.
