Hi and thanks for tuning in! Our TH-cam channel was recently switched to a brand account from a personal one and some past comments were lost as a result. Please ask any questions you have and we’ll get to them as quickly as possible, thanks again for watching and please don’t forget to hit like, subscribe, and enjoy!
Ha this/you just completely inspired me! I spent the first 10 years of my life wanting to be a rally driver and the last 28 saying it’s too late/unrealistic. This is the first time I actually think I could get into it. Thanks.
I have an 07 same exact thing but it's a sedan not a hatch. It's lifted with forrester struts too. It's alot of fun so if you want a lift kit forrester struts
Corollas are another good option. A lot of universe parts like the subie plus universal parts with other cars like the Celica or mr2. You get your choice of fwd, rwd and awd if you can find an all-trac.
I was going to recommend a Volvo 240 or 740 when you started talking about rear wheel drive cars, and then you go and do it for me! Like you said, they are extremely capable cars, and built like absolute tanks. I wager that close to 98% of all drivers here in Sweden start out in a Volvo, if not more. Of course it is much more common over here, but it is still a great car for any beginner wishing to try rear wheel drive.
Volvos have made for some downright heroic rally cars. I prefer the wagons myself, so I don't think I'd ever race my 740 turbo because it's so big (I just traded one of my Hondas for an Impreza RS for a winter/rally beater), but I know firsthand how capable they are.
Looks like I'm starting off with a 744 turbo. Already own one that's basically a parts car. Plus lots of extra parts I've been hoarding for my daily drivers.
I would add a first gen pontiac vibe/matrix to this. Very light, simple, and cheap cars. They’re very controllable on dirt and have good options for oem upgrades for the engine, transmission, and drivetrain
1zzs eat oil, and 2zzs have a horrid powerband for rally. Agree it's a pretty fun car. Probably better trying to find an XRS corolla, retune the lift parameters
@@LuPa_Dragon nah keep the vibe as a daily, find something beat for rally. If you truly don't care about interior or paint etc there's plenty of very functional cars out there for very little money. Find a good light car *with lots of cheap parts available* Even better if factory LSDs can be had within stock ish class rules
I would also say a 2001-2009 Volvo S60 2.4 is a great starter as well. Can get it in fwd or awd, bulletproof motor, comes N/A but there is a turbo version, compact 4 door. Great car all around
They're a pita though because of the integration. Can't just rip stuff out without pissing off the factory electronics. If you go this route also know the haldex AWD is really crappy for this use case but better than nothing. Make sure the car was well serviced. Find a T5 car ideally with AWD and the M66 manual. Get the newer haldex controller that engages the rear more aggressively, or have it reprogrammed. I think the V8 cars came with them. The 1.8 isn't worth messing with. The 5cyls are awesome engines. PCV system isn't really great, fix that. And the fuel pump controller is very vulnerable, make sure it's seal well and protected. Then replace all the suspension bushings and you have yourself a pretty fun car. I bet you could put XC90 suspension on a sedan too, they're very similar like many unibody cars out there. I don't know how far the mounts/subframes vary but an AWD S40 T5 manual with XC90 suspension might be a hell of a car
Please make a video about different rally groups, which one we can enter as an amateur? and is there any professional web site to sell second hand rally cars?
The 02-06 Lancer OZ Rally was used in WRC with great success, many people still think they were Evos. Sure those WRC were modified platforms, but it’s a great little starter car that can be upgraded and modified as you gain experience. Could more than rival those little subies.
One reason I race a 95 Impreza is because in St Louis, you don't need emissions on non-OBD-2 cars, meaning 95 and older. If you plan on really modifying your power train at all, this makes things SO much easier, and this is why I tend to turn away from post-96 cars.
Bro! I can't believe you said Volvo 240.. I soooo miss my Flat Hood 240! Always looking for another one. Put in Urethane bushing and a mustang 5spd and they run great!
My rally school use MkIV, cause it's very cheap in china lol... Just started in rally driving,AWD is too much expensive than FWD. I think maybe i need a fiesta for training... BTW thx for all your video, very helpful !
I've got an old MK4 GTI that is lowered, which was great, but my driveway now, since I moved to the country, is practically a rally stage, 2 miles of dirt road with a creek that runs through it. I'm looking to build the GTI into a grassroots rally car, there's a rallycross school about 1.5 hours away. I love watching your videos, and hope to one day take some classes at your driving school. Maybe I'll bring the GTI and get your opinion on it, lol.
This is a very interesting video to watch and there's a lot of useful information, but I think the MOST important thing you can do if you want to get it to rally is to continue your research beyond this video. The better you have an understanding for the car itself the better you will be able to prepare yourself and planning what vehicle is right for you to rally. Another great option if you've never experienced rally before is to get out attend a couple of your local events, talk to the teams that are competing. They'll tell you their stories and how they got where they are today, very very valuable information and I've done it myself! One last thing on the teams because I know this is turning into a paragraph comment is be a navigator for one of your local teams. Get some seat time feel what it's like to whip through the woods on some less than ideal roads, then you really get a sense of whether not rally is really the sport for you.
I've really been thinking about doing this. Atleast for a one time run. Get an old 95 Impreza, lighten it, swap the suspension, probably tune it on some race gas and have at it. Hell maybe even a Miata. Lol
The volvo rear ends are pretty expensive to mod anywhere that is not sweden. In north america, the solution is a 6 cyl. toyota 4-runner live axle with supra mkIII LSD, weir performance maxgrip kit & at least a 4.56 final drive. All that can be had for cheap, a buddy just finished that kind of mod on a 240 for just a little over 1000$ cad, really good & solid!
Beaver Lake Motorsports Not a LSD, but a simple locker. Spartan lockers are $230, and have worked better than a welded diff in our rally car so far (20+ rallies). 4.88 ring and pinion is $130, or ~$200 for a 5.2 (which is what you really want). Even a 5.2 for a 1031 diff is $260 from Sweden, so very reasonable. That being said, I am currently doing the Toyota diff swap since the future engine will have about 300 easy hp, and the d30 will not handle that. I will say that the Supra diff is far from perfect, and it needs to be shimmed every year to keep the preload up.
Beaver Lake Motorsports Do I? I've had at least 5 packages shipped from Sweden this year. The most expensive was $70, and it had 6 control arms, a header, and 2 sets of OS valves. The locker and 1030 R&P are available stateside.
A Great Rally Car is an old Honda Civic. If you add a K24 it'll add more traction by increasing the weight in the Front. Really cheap and easy to work on.
Hey Wyatt! Very valuable advice as I wanna start rally coming from track racing with Porsche. Didn’t know I could have fun for so little money. Great stuff. Thanks a lot. Richard
After considering rally school and building a car I decided to by myself a brand new fiesta st. It is hard to explain the fun and power it gives. But it’s so nice and clean and cost me so much money that I am now that slow guy In a fast car 😅
I used to run an '81 Scirocco in rallycross, on a wet course I could pretty consistently beat WRXs. It had enough power to get around the course, but not enough to constantly run off. I would run a Fiesta in a heartbeat.
As someone who started on a hawkeye impreza with forrester struts, the best car to start on is an impreza with forrester struts. 175ish whp. Full time awd that's pretty predictable, pretty good on gas, pretty reliable, easy to work on, good looks, sounds great with a muffler delete (or an exhaust cutout which I have). There's alot of parts for the cars because of all the shared stuff between subarus, and the aftermarket scene is pretty good too. If you want some soft suspension forrester struts are perfect, if you want a stiffer ride keep the stock struts with the 150 dollar 3 inch spacer lift kit. Either way no matter what you want hawkeye impreza will deliver.
I'm fortunate to have gotten a mk2 VW Golf for a low price, which still has race decals on it. Now it delivers newspapers to a slippery dirt road neighborhood. Interested in getting into rallying now.
well i did start learning rally racing techniques in an ol suby wagon same model and color as this one, its great! Start in the snow, then take it to the gravel, its reliable if you take good care of it and the only problem is rust! Cheap to maintain too!
You guys should address where to buy a log booked car and make sure its actually got what you need to start as it seems to be a common challenge and is a logical progression from this video.
VW bug multiple motor choices Quick change ability...still available Parts are cheap. Simple mechanics skills will get you competitive...many different classes I have a 1959 but with a 1500 I took out of a 1972 van.. It was seized when I got it but I freed it up and now runs great, added external oil cooler and filter for better heat control and oil flow My friends think I should restore not race, but I'm going to... Same year I was born!
Speaking of starting out and finishing a rally. Can you put some sort of front end protection like stronger front bumper structure made of tubular steel? Never seen a rally car with an exoskeleton type cage. Just curious.
Volvos are good choices from the old 240 to the S60. Hell a stock Volvo XC70 wagon would probably beat alot. The 5 cylinder turbo motor is a great motor for rally.
I think the fifth gen Camaro is pretty good for rallying, they are relatively cheap in terms of how much horsepower they make. Suspension is soft and have a reasonably good ground clearance . Parts aren’t really expensive. The only complaint is that it’s kinda heavy. You have to do a lot of weight reduction while still heavier than most car.
I had a buddy give me back a Crown Vic i sold him cuz he wrecked it. Threw a Trac Lok in it and some 4.10’s so far. Putting a 5spd in it over the winter and going rallycrossing next year. Just here for a good time not a fast time 🤣
Can you do a follow up video on picking a vehicle to buy for Scca rallycross? Maybe even a 3 part series for each class; front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, and all wheel drive.
I had a Ford Fiesta SE and in the S mode on the automatic transmission it was a lot of fun and had a good bit of pick up. Recently traded it for a 2019 STI and got my dream car and now i want a Fiesta ST to get into racing
Really seriously, the Mk3 Golf is considered a decent rally car? I just bought one (as a DD for now at least) for $500 on CL, bone stock. If you guys think that's a good car to start with, and once I have a proper DD, I'll totally rally that thing, no love lost. And hell, I'm gonna find myself a Rallycross to go to this season, might as well, right?
I run a Mk. 4 GTI in SCCA RX and absolutely love it. Swapped in a 225 HP Mk I Audi TT-Q complete front sub-frame and engine, and went with a Mk. 4 2.0 NA 5 speed trans, for the 4.34 Final drive ratio. Great car, and I will be going to Rally Sprints and hopefully NASA in the next year or so. Mk. 4 was the first Golfs that came fully laser seam welded in the chassis from the factory, so much stiffer car for rallying.
MrMakoDLC Yeah, I was wondering why he mentioned the MK2 and MK3 but not the MK4. It's a lot easier to find a rust free MK2 than it is to find a rust free MK3.
MrMakoDLC Why would you swap the TT-Q into the MK4 GTI? They come standard with a 1.8t and with a tune it makes 230-250hp. Seems like you spent more money on your car than you needed to.
Shona; I bought my Mk. 4 as a rolling chassis with no drivetrain. Since I was going to source a 1.8 T anyways, I went with the 225 Hp from the TT-Q as it had the 20 mm wrist pins, Forged Mahle pistons, and forged connecting rods stock. With RallyCross, the car is running close to redline all of the time, so having these items made sense for the constant high rpm. If it had been a running, driving car, I would have just built up the 180 Hp 1.8 T. Also, the AMU code 225 Hp engine has a flatter torque curve, which is better for the sport.
I have a 94 EG Hatchback. Stock and in good condition. I was planning on Rally driving it but think maybe selling it for a Fiesta might be the better route due to them going up in value and parts issues.
Getting recommended real Rally driving tutorials after watching a few Dirt Rally 2.0 videos, nice. What’s next? How to steal a car after playing GTA? 5 fast and easy methods to assasinate your target after Hitman?
Loved the video! Has been a few years since this was posted, I’d love to know how you feel about the BRZ/FRS as a platform for new drivers compared to the Fiesta? I am in the market to get started
mid 2000's used impreza AWD turbo station wagon; same engine as WRX; can be had for around 5k w/ around 150k miles....If you can drive it; you can win. Oh yeah, & the wrecking yard IS your friend...
Hey guys, first off thanks for all the videos it really is amazing what you guys are doing there. Quick question, when looking for a Fiesta, are there any specific years/trims you recommend to purchase or even stay away from?
Both of these are still pretty expensive, I'd look at a Dodge Neon or a older Focus if you want something cheap. Both handle quite well and have tons of cheap parts.
Rally is pretty expensive unfortunately. If the initial purchase is even remotely financially straining, you cannot afford to go rallying yet. You need a truck and trailer to tow, gas to fill it, $1000-2000+ entry fees per event, tires that cost $270 each and wear in 200km, breaking and bending stuff… Just a cage will cost you 4-8k USD for someone to do for you, or a couple thousand in pipes to do it yourself. You will break suspension every event unless you buy Hotbits for ~$3000, find a car with old DMS’s, or send $10-15000 into Reigers. No one runs anything else besides fabbed bilstein setups, avoid ksport gravel. A HANS is $900ish, full suit gloves and boots depends on your outlet but $2000 or so for all the safety equipment. Then the coms, rallysafe unit, etc adds up to another thousand easily. It will kill you until you have a job making 75k+ and you are dedicated and capable of doing most yourself
Even in video games, low power cars are easier to drive fast. A slow car driven perfectly, efficiently, and quickly will most of the time give better lap times than a fast car driven imperfectly. Gradual progression is the best way to go.
I noticed you had Crown Victorias in your "fleet" assuming the engine fits into the rules of the races you want to do, thoughts on running one of them as a rally car?
The police versions have underbody protection and tougher suspension and dampers as standard, and they handle surprisingly well for such a large car, so I'd say they make great rally cars. However, the driveshaft is a weak spot
It sucks so much being in North Texas and not having multiple events nearby. But shout out to Brianne Corn and Dave Carapetyan in central TX for keeping it as much alive as possible!
What about the Mitsubishi Lancer, I own an 03 es, and love the way she drives, and I was thinking of buying a second one (oz rally/Ralliart) and I see that they sell pretty cheap. Don't they share a rivalry with the impreza?
Would the Civic be a good starter rally car? Just more easier to find than a fiesta or the older WRXs outside big cities, and obviously tonnes of parts.
Great video. You go off on tangents a lot but they're relevant, informative, based on experience, and full of passion. I hope to start in the next two years or so in the UK, fingers crossed!
@@Teamoneilrally the main question I have though, should I run with nose lift up? It will put more drag of the car, but I don't really want to scrap too much.
@@Teamoneilrally super. Thanks for the advice :D I was inspired by tax the rich. You should take a look at his channel he has done rally style things in an Enzo and f40 😎
A friend of my grandfather's has a 240 for sale, under 1000$, but it's automatic, how much would a manual swap be and how common? Would it be worth it?
Would a Skoda Felicia 1.3mpi be a good car to start with? I have one which is totally standard owned by an old man for 20 years and only covered 44k miles, drives great but no abs, power steering and only 68 hp.
hey just stumbled across your channel the other day very interesting content. I got a question what is the most realistic rally game out there atm you think? a lot of them seem to have very little grip on asphalt and weirdly gravel seems to give better traction most the time.
between the Focus svt 2002-2004 or the 2011-2014 ford fiesta se which would you recommend and why? I'm in the market for a rallycross car and those are what i have come up with for my starter car. I need a good deciding factor/s please. I have an idea if what you will pick , from the name of this TH-cam but still wanted to ask. Thanks for your time
Fiesta... Mostly because an '02 is now 18 years old, here in NH that's only 7 years away from being eligible for Antique license plates! That means even if you find a good, low-mileage one that hasn't been abused, even just the years take their toll. All the plastics and rubber parts will be aged and brittle, there will be more seized nuts and bolts, stuff like the window motors, door locks, door seals, coolant hoses and brake lines and all that stuff starts to go bad... Simple stuff that you might not want to deal with. If you get a Fiesta, you just won't have any of those issues. All the nuts and bolts will come right out, the rubber and plastic parts will all be perfect, you'll spend more time driving and less time fiddling with the trunk latch or the plastic inner fender or some other part you shouldn't have to deal with. Also the SVT Focus is heavier and lower to the ground.
@@Teamoneilrally That you so much. That's all i needed to hear. Again thank you for taking the time to guide me in the right direction. Fiesta it is! 2020 Rallycross season HERE I COME 😁👍
There are a few cars around here that are built race cars for tarmac tracks. How much is needed to convert that kind of car to a rally car? They're already caged, seats, brakes, etc but maybe a new suspension setup and wheels/tires?
May seem odd but I guess Ryan does it with a newer one but I been building a 99 rav4.1 into a rally car so far it's doing well and corners better than I ever pictured but again rare to see

Not a LSD, but a simple locker.
Robert Culbertson as usual robert, you keep underestimating swedish shipping...
Beaver Lake Motorsports
Do I?
This guy has great energy. You can tell he's really into it.
You guys should address where to buy a log booked car and make sure its actually got what you need to start as it seems to be a common challenge and is a logical progression from this video.
I have a 01 Subaru AWD going to make a rally car with super excited.
VW bug multiple motor choices
Quick change ability...still available
Parts are cheap.
Simple mechanics skills will get you competitive...many different classes
I have a 1959 but with a 1500 I took out of a 1972 van.. It was seized when I got it but I freed it up and now runs great, added external oil cooler and filter for better heat control and oil flow
My friends think I should restore not race, but I'm going to...
Same year I was born!
For practical reasons, I agree with the Fiesta; however, I would consider a Honda Fit.
Speaking of starting out and finishing a rally. Can you put some sort of front end protection like stronger front bumper structure made of tubular steel? Never seen a rally car with an exoskeleton type cage. Just curious.
Michael Inmon I'm wondering too
That may affect road legality, which is one of the prerequisites of entry.
Would a Chevrolet Cobalt or Cavalier be a good rally car?
As a certified Ford tech, I have NEVER heard the words "bulletproof" and "Ford Fiesta" in the same sentence...
i have a 1994 wv polo coupe with a 1.3l 75 hp. Its so much fun in the dirt and cheap
I had a buddy give me back a Crown Vic i sold him cuz he wrecked it. Threw a Trac Lok in it and some 4.10’s so far. Putting a 5spd in it over the winter and going rallycrossing next year. Just here for a good time not a fast time 🤣
Learned this the hard way. Blew engine on first race
Can you do a follow up video on picking a vehicle to buy for Scca rallycross? Maybe even a 3 part series for each class; front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, and all wheel drive.
So glad u said Volvo. That’s exactly what I wanna start with (:
I had a Ford Fiesta SE and in the S mode on the automatic transmission it was a lot of fun and had a good bit of pick up. Recently traded it for a 2019 STI and got my dream car and now i want a Fiesta ST to get into racing
So hey is pegeot 206 rc
2 liters naturally aspirated a good car for starters?? Does it fit in the classes suitable for a begginer?
Abtin Shirzadi yea, just look
5-day courses start at 6k dollars.... some day I’ll have the cash to spend like that on a one-week vacation!
Did Honda ever support the Fit,for Rally? JW if there’s any parts out there to Rally one?
Old Audi and Mitsubishi Lancer as well as a Saab.
Saab has become a bit expensive tho
Also old volvos
There’s also a lot of Japanese cars that actually get a small lift on 1999-2005 Ford Focus suspension
I have a 94 EG Hatchback. Stock and in good condition. I was planning on Rally driving it but think maybe selling it for a Fiesta might be the better route due to them going up in value and parts issues.
Absolutely loving all the videos y'all have put up!
Getting recommended real Rally driving tutorials after watching a few Dirt Rally 2.0 videos, nice. What’s next? How to steal a car after playing GTA? 5 fast and easy methods to assasinate your target after Hitman?
Love this channel, keep making videos!
I’m amazed you didn’t mention an old civic.
Triple259772 I'd get an ex
What about a Chevrolet Cavalier or a Cobalt?
I am now looking for a 2000s ford focus to practice with
Even in video games, low power cars are easier to drive fast.
These informational videos kick so much ass. Keep up the good work!
It sucks so much being in North Texas and not having multiple events nearby. But shout out to Brianne Corn and Dave Carapetyan in central TX for keeping it as much alive as possible!
XR4Ti, RWD german engineered with a simple turbo pinto engine.
I've been thinking of getting a MK I Ford Focus 3 Door for my first rally car. Is that a good choice?
Opel corsa A 84 ! Best entry and advanced car in the EU ( depends on the engine you put in it )
What about 2008 hatchback Toyota Yaris? Is that an option?
Definitely looking into building one. Any recommendations on the year and model of fiesta or even focus to start looking into?
What about the Mitsubishi Lancer, I own an 03 es, and love the way she drives, and I was thinking of buying a second one (oz rally/Ralliart) and I see that they sell pretty cheap.
Don't they share a rivalry with the impreza?
I am not speaking of an Evo btw, those are waaaaaay out of future budget
Fiesta ST owner here. Feeling so cool rn hahah
move the camera from time to time, this is too much steady imho
I have a WRX, which I am definitely not thrashing off-road so now I want a gd rs haha
I daily a focus. Ugh the aftermarket isn’t there for the focus unfortunately.
Awesome video what year fiesta should I be looking for ? I am extremely interested
Wouldn’t a older Ford Focus ZX3 work too?
Would the Civic be a good starter rally car? Just more easier to find than a fiesta or the older WRXs outside big cities, and obviously tonnes of parts.
Is there seriously no more FR options left for a rally car?
alright fuckit; Rally GT86 the artist formally known as the scion FRS.
More expensive, longer wheelbase, Rally parts are harder to source
@@jdmsg8441 and its rwd and if u know anything about rally awd and fwd cars are better
I guess if you're finnish you can just get a turbo right away. They're pretty much born being able to rally. And yeah my thought would be an old Volvo
Great video.
You go off on tangents a lot but they're relevant, informative, based on experience, and full of passion.
I hope to start in the next two years or so in the UK, fingers crossed!
seems like a good starting point would be either a honda civic or fit do they just have a hard time keeping up with the fiesta?
I want to rally my ferrari 458 Bro. What you think. Great starter car right?
Yup, send it!
@@Teamoneilrally hey at least when I'm going off the road at 150mph into the trees rolling over on fire I'll look like a badass 😎
@@Teamoneilrally the main question I have though, should I run with nose lift up? It will put more drag of the car, but I don't really want to scrap too much.
Definitely, you don't want to scrape the bottom! That will get expensive fast haha
@@Teamoneilrally super. Thanks for the advice :D
I was inspired by tax the rich. You should take a look at his channel he has done rally style things in an Enzo and f40 😎
A friend of my grandfather's has a 240 for sale, under 1000$, but it's automatic, how much would a manual swap be and how common? Would it be worth it?
I would have done it in my 72 pinto but I don't have it anymore rn I'm looking into early 2000s focus
I would say dirt rally, dirt 4 or wrc 7 or wrc 4
I like the look of older cars personally
between the Focus svt 2002-2004 or the 2011-2014 ford fiesta se which would you recommend and why?
2020 Rallycross season HERE I COME 😁👍
Sounds great, you're going to have a blast!
@@Teamoneilrally thanks! Keep Putting out great videos
There are a few cars around here that are built race cars for tarmac tracks. How much is needed to convert that kind of car to a rally car? They're already caged, seats, brakes, etc but maybe a new suspension setup and wheels/tires?
May seem odd but I guess Ryan does it with a newer one but I been building a 99 rav4.1 into a rally car so far it's doing well and corners better than I ever pictured but again rare to see
Hello TeamONeilRally!
I'm 13 years old and I really want to be prepared and I want to be a pro rally driver. What can I do and how to advance? Thanks!
